Formatting first-paragraph indent in Pages for iPad

I've read the instructions in Pages for iPad's help, which instructs users to highlight a paragraph or paragraphs and then drag the first-line indentation symbol to the desired indent. However, I'm unable to get the first-line indent symbol to move independently of the left paragraph margin symbol. I must be missing something. Is there a source that explains these procedures in greater detail? I would also like to be able to set up a template with this paragraph indentation, but obviously need to figure out how to indent first.

James,
Thanks for the suggestion to use a stylus. I just tried that and you're right that it *sometimes* works, maybe about 25 percent of the time in the past few minutes I've been experimenting with the technique. My problem is that I need to indent precisely for documents that will be saved as Word .docx files. I can't believe that Pages for iPad apparently relegates this important feature solely by sliding and not allowing us to open a window and set the indents numerically.
If it's any consolation, Word for iPad seems just as bad.  :-)

Since Word for iPad requires an Office 365 subscription, I would say worse .
Honestly, it take a little practice. another option might be to start with a different template that includes paragraph indentions. A couple of the built-in templates do, and there are other savailable in the app store.

  • How do I create a new paragraph Style in Pages for iPad?

I opened an RTF document in iOS 6 Pages for iPad. How do I create new paragraph Syles?

Style is a function of the template applied to the document (and/or the limited number built in to Pages). You can mofify the text or apply one of the built in styles, but I do not beleive within Pages in iOS you can create a new style.

  • Auto indent on pages for ipad

I used to be able to do this until the recent update. When I am indented, and I use a number as a bullet point, pages used to automatically go to the next number even if I was indented. Now if I type 1. And then return, it just goes back to the far left.  I will now show you what I mean
What I want to do and used to be able to do...
    History
         1.  Civil war history
         2.  World war 2
    What it does now....
    History
         1.  Civil war history
    World war 2
There is no easy way to tab anymore so taking notes in class is a pain.  At least before this latest update I only had to tab once and it would auto tab and auto number. If I want to auto number anymore, it can't be indented at all.  It can only be all the way to the left margin.  PLEASE HELP I NEED TO TAKE EXTENSIVE NOTES IN CLASS AND IT TAKES FOREVER NOW!!!

I cannot duplicate your problem in Pages on my iPad. When I start a line with a number and period (1.) type some text, then tap return, I'm presented with a new line indented to the same place as the first line and the next number in sequence is automatically inserted.
But if I tap Return twice instead of going down another line the number is removed.
Perhaps your formatting is off? I would suggest though that you first quit Pages like this:
Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
Then reboot your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Short list of features that would be a nice addition to Pages for iPad

So I just finished my first major document on Pages for iPad and there are just a few things that I think would be nice additions.
    1. My biggest problem was font size, I was typing something that required changing the font size every so often, and it got really frustrating having to tap the button, scroll down, tap the font options button, and then change the size. So the easy fix would be to add a little font size adjuster on the main task bar, on the right side maybe, there's a bunch of space up there!
    2. Dedicated copy/paste button. I think it would be nice to add a little copy paste button on then main task bar, on the left side
    3. Another annoying thing is knowing when bold/italic/underline/center left, right, middle was on or off. I think simply making them it a bit darker when it was on would help a bunch, similar to how the shift button turns blue when you turn on caps lock.
    4. Organizing documents into folders, it would be nice if you could organize documents into folders because I can see once you get a bunch of documents up it would get a bit clustered, maybe a search function to?
Feel free to give your opinion or share ideas of what you think should be added!

  • Text formatting in Pages for iPad 2

I am trying to apply text formattting within a document in pages.  It will not allow me to format text within a sentence to bold or italics for specific words.  The fonts in question do have these formats as options, but pressing the corresponding format button does nothing.  I can change the style to lists, etc.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Neil

It is not built in, but you can at least create and edit footnotes (I do not use end notes, but from limited testing, it appears to work with endnotes as well but converts them to footnotes). It sounds complicated when you break it down into steps as I do below, but it really is easy and intuitive.
FIRST: The underlying concept. If you have the latest Pages for iPad, then when it imports a Word document it imports footnotes (and endnotes) and you can edit them.
With that in mind, here is how you can create footnotes on the iPad.
#1 In Word create a one short sentence shell text with a short footnote, like "See the cat run /fn1" "fn/1 The cat was black").
#2 Import that shell document into your iPad, say with email "open using Pages."
#3 Save that shell document as your sour dough starter so to speak.
#4 Now create your new Pages iPad document.
#5 When you are ready to create your FIRST new footnote, copy and paste the shell sentence with shell footnote from your saved starter shell document into your new iPages document.
#5. Edit the shell sentence and footnote to a real sentence and footnote in new document.
#6 Thereafter, as you add new footnotes, either copy / paste one from new document or shell and edit. You will see they renumber properly, even when moved.

  • Can I Auto format the first paragraph on every page of a 20 page document?

So I have a document that is basically just a numbered list of 200 entries.
There are 10 entries per page, making it a 20 page document.
Unfortunately, every so often I am given an additional entry to add, which invariaby is to the middle of the document, and not the end.
What I'd like to do is if I were to add a new #20 to the document, the old #20 (now #21), being pushed to the next page, would then automatically be formatted using my "StyleA" paragraph style.
I haven't been able to discover how to do this, which means, in the above example, I need to go to 18 pages and remove the "StyleA" paragraph formatting as in each case following the addition, it is now the second entry on the page. At the same time, I have to apply the "StyleA" paragraph formatting to each first entry of all subsequent pages. If I only had to do this once in a while, it wouldn't be an issue, but as this document is updated regularily, it is getting tedious.
Nested styles doesn't seem to be an option, since i'm using Numbering which requires a paragraph break to differentiate between each line number, and nested styles seem to apply to every paragraph, unless i'm doing something wrong there.
I hope this is enough to go on.
    Kraeg

You are saying that the formatting is different for every 20th paragraph, reagardless of its content, and that it is aways going to be the first paragraph on a page?
As long as you never deviate from the 20 paragraph cycle this is actually fairly easy to do, you jsut need 20 paragraph styles, 19 of which are based on each other and differ only in the style name. You then set the "next style" attribute to rotate through the list of styles, so the next style for #20 is #1 and the sequence starts over. Now just select the entire block of text from the point where you edited to the end and right-click on the style name for the irst paragraph in the selection, then from the context menu choose Apply <stylename> And Next Style.

  • Pages for iPad--different first page

I haven't been able to find a way in Pages for iPad to create a different first page for headers and footers. Is it possible?

So I'm really glad I found this conversation and I think I can help at least to find a temporary solution until Apple fixes this issue with pages for iPad.  I had the same question and it seems that, in general, those of us that are upset with the lack of this feature are trying to abide by the APA guidelines for running headers.  What I did is I went onto pages on my iMac desktop and created a template document with the headers set up in APA format.  From there I retrieved the document on the iPad through dropbox (or icloud) and the change was made.  Now, everytime I go to write something in APA on pages for the iPad I start with this template and I don't have to worry about setting up the headers as they are ready to go. I am recommending this because not only does it serve as an easy starting point for writer's in APA fields, it also guarantees that an authors work is consistent in its formating and style.  No longer will you have to struggle with the subtle nuances of document design.  Just make a template!

  • Pages for iPad: change a Paragraph Style ?

    Hello all,
there is something that is driving me crazy...
using Pages for iPad is it possible to change the default settings of a Paragraph Style ?
I am not talking about importing a document with a custom set of styles but simply:
    - I open my document in Pages for iPad
    - I select a line of text and apply the "Header 1" style to it
    - I am not happy - for example - with the font size of the Header 1 style and I want to make all my Header 1 paragraphs change their font size
    - In the desktop version you would simply change/update the style you need, but on the iPad I cant find a way to change those values
(BTW, I seem to remember that I once managed to do this...)
    Thanks,

You seem to be able to copy and paste styles, but nowhere that I can find does it let you update the defined styles.
There is the manual which does not refer to any suitable method, and also some eBooks on the subject but I have scanned those and can find no reference to redefining styles either.
The more I play with Pages for iPad the more of a toy it seems. Sort of amazing that it does what it does on a mobile tablet, but when you get right down to it, not very useful.

  • How do I add footnotes/endnotes in Pages for iPad 2?

Hi everyone. Like many people I was super excited to be able to use my iPad 2 as a word processor with the Pages app. I have a macbook black from 2007 and it is extremely heavy to carry around everyone. I'm a graduate student so mobility for me is key.  Anyway, so I am writing an academic paper write now in Pages for iOS but I can't figure out how to add footnotes/endnotes to cite my sources. I can't find anything online relating to this topic. Can you tell me how to do this? I certainly hope Pages has this capability because without something so fundamental, how can it be the least bit useful? Thanks so much!

  • Soft returns in Pages for iPad

I would really like to create a space between numbered items in Pages but I can't figure out how to do it.  Does anyone know how to create a soft return in Pages for iPad?
I have seen responses for the desktop application but not the iPad application.

    Pages 1.7.1, IOS 5.1.1
You start a bullet item and then press both ⇧ and return keypad keys to force a newline. This turns off the bullet style. Press return. Use the paintbrush toolbar icon to reselect the Bullet paragraph style again. This approach shows the inelegant possibility.
The best approach would be at the end of your bullet text, change your line spacing from 1.0 to 1.25 from within the paintbrush > Layout tab. A return continues your bullet style. If your normal body text has been 1.0 line spacing, you can switch back to that after your list.

  • Image quality in Pages for iPad

    Hello!
I'm editing a new book in Pages (OS X). It has several high quality images.
I need to edit the same file in Pages for iPad. I use iCloud, so the file will be synced.
I'm worried about the QUALITY of all my images. I'm affraid Pages for iPad will DECREASE the quality of my images; then, when re-opening the file in my iMac, I could have images with less resolution. Is this true? Could it happen or the quality will be PRESERVED?
    Thank you!

    Good question!
From my rough testing of round tripping a Document and checking the size in the Share Export Page option it looks as if it maintains the Origanal Document size. Even after it has been Editted on both an iPad and Desktop. Hope this helped
There is also the option to check the Document size under the Inspector, first Tab then the last Button (Info) I think you have to Save the Document first before "Show File Info" becomes active

  • Resize columns in Pages for iPad?

Is there a way to resize columns in a multi-column document in Pages for iPad? I want a narrow left column and a wider right column. I can kinda get the effect by using a table, but it'd be easier to just adjust the column widths. Is this possible, and if so, how?

    Hi Adarga,
I'm not seeing a way to resize the columns and the Help doesn't mention it either. I'm just able to change the indents and "margins" within the columns, but the columns stay the same size.

  • Images in Pages for iPad

    Hello all,
I want to use my iPad to write assessments of my students papers, the form I have to use for these assessments has a number of images, like the schools logo etc., after transfering the pages document to Pages for iPad the images have disappeared, no matter how I transfer them, tried iCloud, Dorpbox, Mail, iTunes etc. Anyone has a solution for this?
    Thanx
    Mark

Have you tried transferring the images separately and the placing them into the document on the iPad? I know that it might be a more cumbersome solution, but it's worth a try.
Obviously you are using file formats that the iPad can handle - correct? No .eps or .ai files? From the iPad specifications .... Viewable document types: .jpg, .tiff, .gif (images)

  • How to double space in Pages for iPad?

How to double space in Pages for iPad?

Double spacing is double spacing whether you are using Pages or Word. Double spacing is dependent upon the font size that you are using in the document no matter which word processing app that you use.
Pages on the iPad has limited fonts and chances are pretty good that if you import a Word file into Pages on the iPad, there will be some formatting or font issues.
But once again, Helvetica in Pages is pretty much the same Helvetica as you would be using in Word. If you use a font in Word that is not available in Pages, you will see a warning message that some elements of the original document have been changed.

  • *** - no footnotes & endnotes in Pages for iPad?!

OK - I just got an iPad and am in general fairly happy about it. But I had a big *** moment, after I purchased Pages and tried to open a document I had been working on on my Mac. Guess what - iPad Pages won't import footnotes and endnotes!
Does anyone know if Apple is planning on changing this in an upcoming release? This is truly unacceptable. How can Apple expect all of its student customers to use it, not to mention other academics? This strikes me as a large portion of their customer base. What's worse, the advertising leads one to believe that, besides some complex formatting, everything you can do on Pages for Mac can also be done on Pages for the iPad.
Has anyone found a workaround to this 'bug'? I don't know whether Apple did this intentionally or not, but it's a very serious drawback of the app.
I will tell my student friends not to download Pages for iPad, until this is fixed. Apple - get with it!
A loyal but disappointed Apple customer

I agree with most of what you are trying to get across, except that I think there are a few problems when applied to the issue at hand (footnotes on iPad Pages).
    1) Yes, I agree the OP could have found out. I haven't bought an iPad yet, and this is one of the reasons (along with issues with Keynote), and the fact that I until these things are solved, my MacBook Pro works fine. However, here are a few lines right from Apple's product page on the iTunes store...
    - View and edit existing documents by importing Pages '09 or Microsoft Word files from Mail attachments or web.
    - Share your work by exporting to Pages '09, Microsoft Word, or PDF and sending it via Mail. …
    - Transfer documents between Mac or PC and your iPad using File Sharing in iTunes.
Now, combine that with the fact that this isn't called 'Pages Lite' or iPadMiniWrite... one sure gets the impression that things are going to be more seamless. Not even a little asterisk noting some feature difference in files or that you lose certain document aspects when going back and fourth. You'd have to be fairly tech-savvy to pick up the word 'export' and 'import' and imply this from that. One would guess that for MS Word or some other word processor, but not when the app has the same name and the above statements are made.
    2) Yes, I realize footnotes aren't trivial, but they are a basic feature of every word-processor I've ever used (mail merge probably as well)..... I'm pretty sure even back on computers with several times less processing power and RAM than the iPad has. There are some incredibly complex applications for the iPad. Unless there is some really crazy limitation I can't conceive of, footnotes aren't a technical limitation issue.
    3) I'm not blaming Apple for anything other than being pretty unclear about this. Make it clear... then let the user decide. While I love Apple, this is walking a pretty fine line near deception IMO. I do remember finding this out and being somewhat ******-off at the time because I had been tricked after the keynote (speech), and reading EVERYTHING I could find on the topic. This didn't come out until some real reviewers got their hands on one and discovered and exposed it. I certainly wasn't the only one who was shocked by this. That isn't cool, and isn't the Apple I know.
    4) I don't really think it is an unfair complaint. This is something Apple should implement (and hopefully will)... and be clear about until then. At the very least, if the iPad can't support footnotes, it should at least somehow preserve them in the file so that if you save and go back to the desktop, it hasn't stripped them out.
BTW, sorry for inferring you were a fanboy... and welcome to the world of Apple. I think you'll find that long-time Apple users can be extremely critical of Apple products when we feel they aren't living up to expectations in some way. And, believe it or not, Apple often does listen..... which I think is at least part of what has made them a great company.
