Formatting for storage

I just got a 30GB video ipod. I have a mac at home with itunes. I want to enable my ipod to transfer large files from home to school. School is a PC environment.
I was told that in order to be able to transport data to a PC I would need to format my ipod through a PC machine.
My question is: Is this true? And if it is, does that PC machine have to have iTunes? If not, how do I format the ipod drive on the PC?
That was actually more than one question.
Thanks
Peter

Peter,
An iPod formatted for Windows may be used on a Mac but not the other way around as Windows can't read the Mac file system. The process isn't supported by Apple however as you can see from the iPod FAQ:
Note: Using the iPod for Mac on a PC, or using the iPod for Windows on a Mac, is not supported by Apple. FAT32 is the format used by Windows, and while some FAT32 iPod models may work with your Mac, Apple only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. For more information see the iPod shuffle Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
To format the iPod, the PC would need to have the Updater installed on it but not necessarily iTunes.

  • Which is best video format for storage of video media files?

Greetings, good folk and happy holidays!
My question involves the conversion of physical video media, DVDs, video files, etc, and storage for use with multiple devices.
Like many of you, I have video in many formats and in multiple places... DVDs, Blu-Ray, AVIs, MP4s, etc.  I want to convert them all to a usable format to use in conjunction with my Iphone, Apple TV, IPad, etc. and store in one place in an electronic "library." The problem is that there are countless formats they can be converted to, and not all formats look good on all devices. A video converted to Iphone format will be optimized for the smaller screen and may not look good on the iPad. And iPad converted video might not look good on larger TVs used with Apple TV.
Was wondering if you folks would have opinons as to the best codecs, format and specs to convert video to that would look good on any device from iPhone to an iPad to a TV with Apple TV.
I'm not expecting Blu-Ray quality sharpness with a universal format when used with Apple TV, but something reasonable without artifacts would look fine.
I'm using IM Too Video Converter Ultimate which has presets for many difference devices, but not sure which options will work best.
    Anyone else dealing with this?
    Thank you for your time.

  • What is the best video format for 50+ year movie storage?

Objective:  In what video format should I store my family movies on an external drive?  I want these family movies to be viewable by future generations in 50 - 70 years, so what video format / type is recommended?
Background:  I have an iMac, OS X 10.7.5.  I use IMovie '11, version 9.0.8.  My iMac has an internal DVD player and burner and iDVD is installed.
I have dozens of family movies (total 80+ hours) dating back nearly 70 years.  All these films have been digitized and I have imported many of them into iMove as events, then I edit them with title pages, transitions, music, etc.  When a "project" is completed (Between 1.5 - 2.0 hours or less) I share the project to iDVD where I burn it to a DVD.  Within iMovie I save each of these projects (on the internal Mac HD, which consumes very little space) and on an external drive I save for each project:
    - a disc image (DVD.img) whose size is about 4.5 GB
    - a copy of the iMovie project, whose size is about 60 MB (the original project is in iMovie, in the Mac internal drive)
    - the original digitized raw movies imported into iMovie as events and are formatted as .mov (these are large size at 8 GB - 20 GB each)
    - the finalized and fully edited iDVD which is formatted as DVD.dvdproj (these are very large size at 20 - 24 GB each)
As you can see with all these disc images, projects, events and DVD projects stored on my external drive I am at nearly 1 TB of storage, on my way to 1.75 before I comple editing all movies.
While I manage pretty well the editing my movies within iMovie, and how to create an iDVD project and then burn a DVD, I have no understanding of the technical aspects of the multitude of different movie formats in the market nor of Quick Time and its format.
I am told that DVDs will only last 10 - 15 years and then begin to deteriorate.  And iMovie '11 won't be arond 50 years from now.  Nor will the current / recent versions of iDVD.  Thus, for posterity:
    1.  In what format should I store my family movies on an external drive so they can be viewed by family members 50 - 70 years from now? (best chance for viewing, since we don't know what formats they will have then)
    2.  How do I convert from what I have (disc image, iMovie project, DVD project) to your recommended format?
    Thank you,
    HDP

There is no such format for movies or even Photographs. Frankly we can't guarantee the persistence of any format past the next 10 years, not to mind 50 - 70.
Codecs are being improved and created all the time, and this process will continue. In 50 years time we may still have .mov and .avi files, but the codecs that create the movies within will have changed.
One thing is reasonably sure: DVD will be as deader than floppy disks are now. Ditto Blue Ray. They're on the way out now, and in 10 years they'll be curiosities.
    So, what's the solution:
Best I can suggest is to keep your movies on volatile media like Hard Disks (with back ups on other disks, or course). Progress will be evolutionary - as new formats come along there will be the option to migrate older data to these newer formats, and that's the trick. As always, when it comes to migration, the more data available the better the likely result, so keeping your movies in the least compressed versions possible seems a good approach.
That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee someplaces, but nowhere fashionable.

    TD

  • Formatting external drive for storage/backup/video files

    Hi,
I just purchased a 500mb My Book Pro external drive for use with my imac duo which runs Windows XP via bootcamp. This computer is shared by three family with very different skills and needs. My dilemma. I want to format the drive so that the imac can be backed up easily three users. It is formated Fat32 and is supplied with Restrospect Express 7.5 backup software. It would be nice to backup the modestly used windows sector, but that's a secondary consideration. My problem is that one user has a lot of larger than 4 gb video files which are too large the Fat 32 format. My notion is to segment the backup drive so that I leave 300 mb in fat 32 to facilitate backup with supplied software, and segment a second 200 gb drive using mac os extended so that the user can manually move her video files for storage/backup on the backup drive. Is there a simpler solution? For example, if I formatted the entire 500gb as mac os extended, could I still run the retrospect backup software? If not, is there a reasonably priced alternative software? And finally, with either Fat32 or Mac OS extended, can I move files from the Windows platform? Would I be better off just biting the bullet and telling my daughter to make her own arrangements to compress and backup her video files or get her own hard drive, thus leaving the backup drive to the simple factory supplied software solution?

    Hello,
You're indeed in a pickle. If you use Bootcamp and want the HD accessible via the Mac and WinXP, then you don't want to format it as Mac HFS because WInXP wouldn't be able to access it. If you go FAT32 then both WInXP and Mac OS can access it, but you face the dilemma of the 4GB threshold.
If you format as NTFS, then you eliminate the 4GB threshold but then Mac OS cannot access it.
I have a similar dilemma, which is why i use Parallels more than Bootcamp. I have 2 external FW HD's (160GB/250GB), both formatted to Mac HFS. The 160GB i have partitioned as 50GB and 100GB. I have a bootable backup of Mac OS residing on the 100GB partition (yay to SuperDuper!) and some other stuff on the remaining 50GB. The 250GB is exclusive for movies (cough..cough..bittorrent) and for streaming via Orb 2.0 to my Treo. I have WinXP running in Parallels, and Vista Ultimate via Bootcamp. In Parallels, i can access my external HD's via Parallel's Shared Folders but in Vista (Bootcamp) since the HD's are in a non-Windows recognised formatting, they're not accessible (which is a bummer, as i'm loving Win media center).
What you can do is partition the HD the way you're thinking and format (one part Mac HFS and the other NTFS), but my best recommendation is that with the falling prices of HD's nowadays, why not just get a seperate HD do what you want with it. I spied a WD MyBook 500GB USB HD at CompUSA for $129.99 (no mail-in rebate nonsense) and similar good prices at Bestbuy and Newegg.com.

  • [Athlon64] CPU cant see my other HD I want to use for storage

Ok so I have the msi k8n-neo v with 3000+ athlon 64, Im running win xp 32, I had too much problems with win xp 64 ( wasnt running my games well ) ANYHOO... I have a 120 gig sata WD HD, now I have this other HD WD 40gig but its not SATA.  It has windows installed on it already, I just want to use it for extra space maybe a new partition for storage, and I hook it up and my CPU doesnt even see it.  Most cases I cant even boot it up. It goes to my logo screen and stays there.  IF i hit tab I can go to this other menu, but cant make any choices and it scans my hardware.  I even tried running my win XP setup disc but I think its asking for my driver boot disc.  Im just afraid to use it cause I dont want my main HD to lose any data or become corrupt where i have to re-install windows AGAIN for the 6th time in the last two months LMAO.  Anyway I THINK (prolly wrong) that I have the little slave/master doohicky in the wrong spot.  I have tried it in every single spot but I still cant get past my logo screen.  the 40 gigger is hooked up to the MOBO from one IDE cable its not a slave on that cable just one cable from the HD to the MOBO in slot two.  Slot one is occupied by my dvd rom and my cd rom.  Can anyone help me out on this one?  Im still kinda new to all this but learned a hell of a lot in the last year!!!!!!!!

...put the SATA drive in and start it up to make sure it's still working...if it's OK, shut it down...
...remove the jumper from the Western Digital 40GB drive...connect it to the far end of an IDE cable...connect the other end to your motherboard...start your machine...
...after Windows boots click Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > highlight Disk Management in the left pane > see if the 40GB is there > it should be > click the drive in the right pane > Action > All Tasks > Format...after Fomat you may have to go back to Action > All Tasks > Mark Partition As Active...

  • Using Mac mini for storage

    Hello Folks,
Quick question: can I use the mac mini for storage only? I have loads of movies, music and tv shows that I want to store.
How would this work if at all possible?
Alternative advice on EHD that I should rather use?
    Thanks!
    JDT

Yes, and target disk mode, or firewire over IP or setting it up as a file server are all possibilities. But given there are faster more capacious hard drives for less, I would get that instead unless there is some feature of the Mac Mini that a simple hard drive can't do that you need. I.e. Front Row, Media Central or other software can be used to see your data on a TV. An external hard drive attached to your desktop Mac together with an AppleTV can do the same thing but the media formats are more limited.

  • Best format for ripping video

I have 3 home movies that are only on dvd, master tapes got misplaced somewhere,I do however still have twenty something 8mm tapes of other home movies but that is a whole other post, anyhow I downloaded handbrake for these 3 dvd movies and to be honest I am over whelmed with all the options.
What is the best format with no or little quality loss for saving these for raw backups stored on external hard drive, maybe on data dvds as a precaution?
Also I will make copies of these edit and save to a format which will be good for viewing on hdtv via applae tv or ps3, I was thinking mp.4 and doing at 16:9.. would this be my best choice for the viewing versions?
The actual quality of the dvds are well not to good so I am trying to keep the little bit that I have.

thanks, what I have been doing is using handbrake and encoding as mp4, averages about 1.5 gig per hour and quality is same as dvd, then I open quicktime pro and trim edit stuff out and resave, still encoded as mp4 but gets saved as .mov.
this seems doable for storage now I hoping that I can copy paste these movies to a folder for viewing on apple tv or ps3, should work, however bring me to another question, should I convert these to 16:9 since they will be watched on a hdtv?
right now it seems all the footage is being imported 4:3 and at a resolution of 640x480, how will these look on a 1080p sony?

  • External Drive for Storage/Backup?

Ok so I think I'm at the point where it would be a smart idea to back up all my valuable data (as if there was never a smart time to do this?)
Now my question is this: Can an external Hard Disk be used on both my G5 and relatives MacPro at the same time? As in I can dump some files on it from the G5, then plug in into the MacPro and do the same - having seperate storage folders on the Drive for each computers backup?
I've never attempted to do an external drive backup before. I've only ever done it with burning DVDs. So if I'm missing something or this sounds like a silly question please forgive!
    Thank you in advance!

I am not too sure you can simultaneously connect one drive to two different machines, in fact I am quite sure you can't and I think that is what you were asking, vs. partitioning it with two partions (easy) and using it on one or the other mac at separate times.
Note by easy I mean it uses the mac partitioning scheme and thus it cannot boot an intel.
As pointed out, there are guides to formating one drive with 2 partitions so it can have two different bootup disks, on PPC and one intel. I would not bother. Seems daunting and if you are unsure of PATA vs. SATA then forget learning that very complex operation.
These drives of adequate (or even quite massive) size don't cost enough to bother. Buy two drives, firewire only and partition one GUID for the intel and the traditional mac format for the other.
And I think you should just buy two already made external (FIREWIRE) drives from LaCie or OWC and not get into buying raw drives, cases and the like and assembling them - you don't save a whole lot if anything, and a lot of these cases are rubbish pure and simple.
Judging by increasingly unhappy posts about the "PC brand" external drives (Maxtor, WD, Iomega) trying to mosey into the mac world I would avoid them like the plague.

  • Best format for importing AVCHD (.mts) files?

After reading a lot of these archives and being a very new Mac user, I think I understand what I have to do here. I have an HD camcorder that records in .mts. I can either directly import from the camera to iMovie (which takes up far too much space) or I can convert the .mts to a different format that takes up lesser space while keeping the original files saved elsewhere.
What I haven't been able to figure out is, what format is going to be the most space efficient? While I would love to have super great HD quality, these are all home movies and primarily I want to be able to view them, edit/merge clips a little for storage, possibly burn to a DVD. Some quality lost in compression is ok with me. I have handbrake and converted to .mp4, but that still seemed to take up a lot of room...about 450 MB for maybe a 1-2 minute clip. There has got to be a better way, I would imagine, that would store better and also be acceptable to iMovie without translating into AIC codec (which I know takes a lot of room). Any thoughts? I am open to other third party conversion tools. I also can use Final Cut Pro if there is a compressed file FCP uses that will be smaller and better.
    Thanks!!

So, I've been playing around with things. I used handbrake to convert the .m2ts into .m4v, and when I unclicked "optimize file", the file stayed at around 32 MB, and the original .m2ts was 27 MB. I also used a VoltaicHD trial to convert (it converted to .mov), and it was 107MB. The quality in iMovie was not too different to my eye, and it looks like the different is 1920x1080 vs 1440x816.
For home movie quality type stuff (and provided I keep original files in the event I ever want to use them), is the handbrake method going to be the smallest I can get? It seems pretty good to me, an extra few MB isn't a big deal...just not sure if I'm totally missing something here. It seems like the .m4v isn't being converted to the AIC, whereas the .mov is. Handbrake is a pain b/c it doesn't seem like I can click on multiple files at once to add to queue, but to save all that space it seems worth it. Tried MPEG streamclip and it doesn't convert .m2ts. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something, because that's a huge difference in storage space.

  • Music Server Can't See External Drive Formatted for WIN with Disk Utility.

Is there any reason an external drive formatted for WIN (MS-DOS(FAT)/FAT32 or NTFS w/ NTFS-3G/MacFUSE) with Disk Utility would not work for intended purpose? I have a music server (Bryston BDP-1) that uses an attached USB drive for storage/playback of music and can only read FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. I've tried both and neither is readable by the BDP-1, yet I have no problem reading/writing to the supplied 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32), as well as another 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32). Get Info shows; "FAT32" for all drives formatted as such.
Note: From what I'm told the BDP-1 uses a scaled down version of Linux for it's OS. Isn't that UNIX? Shouldn't it be compatible (Read/Write) with other platforms (i.e, Mac)? Bryston says the reason they use it because it's Open-Source. Does Linux only work FAT32 or NTFS?
I do have Fusion/XP, also access to WIN PC's, but I just hate to use it when I shouldn't have to. It makes no sense why the drive can't be read by the BDP-1 when formatted for WIN under OS X.
And there was one other issue, after the third try to format fro WIN the external drive suddenly began making faint clicking sounds instead of a spinning drive sound only when plugged into BDP-1 USB port. But it works fine when connected to iMac FW.
    HW Specs:
    Drive: G-Drive Mobile USB/FW 750GB

    Exchanged drive. Works now.

  • What is the file format for blobs stored for mds

Does anyone know what type of file is stored into the blobs for a saved search/layout for mds in the streamed docs table? It doesn't appear to be xml, and looking at the a text version of whats in there it looks like its java code, but it isn't quite that.
If anyone can point me in the right direction of being able to to turn the blob back into something human readable that would be great, as i would much rather be able to edit the blob than wipe out data.

The data storage format for MDS data, while you may be able to figure it out or guess what it is by looking at it, is not published as far as I know. The only APIs that are published (again, as far as I know) are [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/apirefs.1111/e14776/toc.htm]here
Editing the data is at your own risk. You could always try raising a request with https://support.oracle.com asking for details, but I wouldn't bet anything of value on receiving the data you're asking for.

Hello. I just installed Acrobat 9 Professional. Upgrade from AP7. For some reason, when I go to select the printer in the Page Setup> Format For> dropdown menu, the printers do not show up. When I try to make a pre-set for this printer it never works and always defaults back to Language Level 3, which gives me a postscript error when I try to print. It prints fine at Language Level 2 but I can't get the setting to stay. Any clues???

    Geraldine,
There are some oddities in Pages' methods.
What you did was save the changed template which had been altered on the page but you also needed to "capture" and save the Layout or Section over the existing one in the document using the same name to replace it.
I will walk you through making your own version of a template.
1 Open a new document using the template you wish to customise.
2 Don't change anything yet, but open every section from the Sections pull down menu so you have a sequence of pages each with a page of a different section design.
3 Make Master Objects selectable if they are not.
Change each Section to your liking.
    4 +Menu > View > Page Thumbnails+
5 Select first Thumbnail in sidebar
+Menu > Format > Advanced > Capture Pages… > Name : Type exactly the same name as the section > It will ask you if you want to replace the existing section > Replace+
6 Repeat this for each section until you have replaced them all.
    7 +Menu > File > Save as Template… > Save with a New Name+
    8 +Menu > File > New from Templates > My Templates > Choose your New Name template+
You now have a document customised to your design.
