Formatting issues in iBooks on the iPad

Hello,
I'm creating iBooks to publish on the iBookstore, but am having some formatting issues, or so I think at least.
I have already created one iBook (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/book/id387336687, apologies for the morbid subject matter), which I tested on my iPhone (iOS 4.0) before publishing, and everything appeared correctly. Since then I've purchased an iPad, and have noticed that some of the formatting, namely text alignment, has lost it's formatting. This formatting issue only seems to effect the text, as all images look fine.
I'm creating the iBooks in InDesign CS5 and Sigil, of which I've checked the CSS and everything seems correct.
I'm wondering whether this is an issue with the current iPad iOS, and will be fixed once iOS 4.2 is released. But if anyone can shed some light on why this might be occurring, it would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

I don't think anyone knows. It could even create a new set of issues by disabling many of the hacks floating around on blogs.

Typical iBooks CSS issues coupled with overly complex InDesign source. I took a different route and reformatted my source into super-simple XML and then generated my ePub from that. I still have all the same iBooks and CSS issues, but I am in complete control of my content.
It is always best to test books on the target device. That shouldn't be a problem now that you have an iPad. However, if you are making decent money, it might be a good idea to keep one iPad on 3.2.2 for testing. That would be the ideal. I don't see the iPhone as being a really big iBooks market. I would focus on testing on the iPad.

  • Format issue causing iBook navigation problems

    Hello!
I created an iBook for a client, but some of the default functions of an iBook aren’t working when it’s previewed on iPad. My question is: since the file format seems to be the issue, what can be done to alleviate it?
    Problems
When previewing the iBook on the iPad...
Framing features such as navigation bar, book info, bookmark tool, etc. are missing
The pages lack animated page turns
Right and left page edge riffles are missing
When the iPad is turned vertically…
Pages scroll top to bottom instead of left to right as they should
    All images disappear
Basically, the iBooks works mostly well in landscape mode but not so much in portrait mode. The client checked other iBooks to compare and the iBook I created is the only one with problems with the interface functions.
Steps Taken To Save & Preview File
Saved the iBook file as an IBA file. I also Exported it as an iBooks file.
Sent IBA and iBooks files to the client to preview on his iPad (I don’t have one so I can’t preview it myself).
The client opened the IBA file using iBooks Author then clicked the “Preview” button.
The IBA file cross-loads to the iPad and the problems can be seen.
The client also attempted to load the IBA and iBooks files on the Book Proofer application (this application does accept IBA and iBooks files), but that didn't work either. The client told me that are some file format issues unrelated to content, leading me to believe that it's a format issue.
    Technical Specifications
iBook Author version I used to create iBook
    1.1 (the latest)
iBooks version client used to preview iBook
    iBooks version 2.1.1 (April 16, 2012 release)
iPad version the iBook is being previewed on
    1st Generation 64GB iPad
File being used to preview on iPad
The IBA and iBooks files for the iBook
Could it be file format incompatibilities? Has anyone had this issue before? I hope the information I provided is useful. Any insight about these issues is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Catrina

Again, sorry, a 'Shared' .ibooks file has the same format as what users download from the store.
You don't need to be in the store to circulate that file. 'private' as defined depends on you. Email that file if possible and/or put it on your own server/dropbox and share the link to trusted individuals.
If you're sending the .iba file to someone that then uses it in iBA, they need to use the 'Shared' menu to generate an .ibooks file, then drop that into iTunes and sync to their device.

  • Street line formating issue (number comes before the street name)

    Hello everyone,
I have an issue regarding formatting of the street line - when I include an address field (say in Smartforms) the street number comes before the street name. This would be according to USA standards, but I need it to be formatted by the EU standards (street name, and then the number). Also, where ever we have an address attached (SU01, customer/vendor master recs, purchase orders, etc) we get the same issue.
So, now it is: "1234 MyStreetName", but I need it to come as "MyStreetName 1234".
I have tried SA10, SA09, OY01 (and all the other customizing I could find), none of which had worked. The strange thing is that in our IDES system, it is displayed as it should be (name - number).
I can't find where this is preconfigured in IDES, so if anyone can suggest I would be very gratefull + points will be awarded for all the helpfull answers.
    Best regards,
    SD.

We are having some problems viewing wide format drawings in safari on the ipad - The images view fine on the computer... Any ideas?

No, the site isn't Flash-based; it's a site I've visited on the phone dozens of times. This problem only started occurring a few days ago.
I'm embarrassed to admit that the site is Popsugar.com, a celeb gossip site that I visit whenever I'm bored.

  • HT4059 How do you sync ibooks from the ipad to the iphone 4

How do I sync ibooks from the ipad mini to the iphone 4?
    Thank you

If they are iTunes purchases and they are still in the store then you should be able to re-download them on your phone via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app. If they are not iTunes purchases, or are no longer in the store, then you can copy them from your iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases (that should copy non-iTunes purchased books/PDFs from the iBooks app as well as ibooks) and you can then sync them to your phone.
If you then want to keep collections and bookmarks in-line between the two devices then use Settings > iBooks > Sync Bookmarks and Sync Collections 'on' ('Sync Collections'  won't copy books/PDFs between the devices, it will just put those that are already on both devices in the same collection)

  • How to resolve formatting issue when eprint from an iPad to Officejet 4500

Just activated the eprint app on my IPad. It found my HP Officejet 4500 Wireless printer but the formatting is wrong when printing an email. Is there a solution?

Do you maybe have a photo of the formatting issue you could post here? Thanks, Ciara

  • TS1702 Previously purchased book on iBooks, previously read. Still visible on iBooks on the iPad. When I attempt to open the book now, I get the message: "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing." Help.   Larry

On iBooks app on iPad: When trying to open a previously purchased and read book, I get the message "Failed to load book because the requested resource is missing."    How can I open the book again?      Larry107

Quit the iBooks app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logou appears and let go of the button.
Or try deleting the book and download it again. You can download it again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID.
If that doesn't work either, sometimes deleting the iBooks app and reinstalling it may work. But art with the first two suggestions.

  • Is it possible to turn off highlighting and underlining in iBooks on the iPad

I like to read lying down, either in bed or on a sofa.  When lying down it is much more comfortable to hold the iPad with one hand.  I find it quite easy to do so if my thumb is placed inwards over the screen and if the iPad is partially propped up by a cushion.  This does mean that my thumb is placed over some of the text.  This could be ok as I could simply shuffle my thumb around a bit when I reach that part of the text.  The only problem is that whenever I move my thumb the iPad often interprets this movement as user input for selecting text, whereupon the software underlines the text.  Very annoying.
Is it possible to toggle text selection off in iBooks?

I'd like to add my voice to James'.  I've had my ipad less than a year and am loving building my library on it.  BUT!   My greatest annoyance is how frequently an accidental touch of the screen while reading inadvertently ends up underlining a section of text.  It drives me NUTS!!!!  Unlike James, I don't have big hands, so we can't be the only two ipad users in the universe with this complaint.  I looked all through settings, trying to find something that would turn this feature off, and then finally found the answer in this forum (and unfortunately, the answer is no.  Boooo.).  It seems to me it would be a VERY simple fix.  C'mon Apple!!!!

  • How do I upload a iBook to the iPad

Help -- I need to trouble shoot my boss through uploading a iBook on to his iPad. Any easy one, two, threes? I haven't done it before.

If he has the book on his computer's iTunes then he connect the iPad to his computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of his computer's iTunes, and then use the Books tab on the right-hand side of iTunes to select and sync it to the iBooks app on his iPad. Or he can re-download it directly on the iPad via the Purchased tab in the ibookstore in the iBooks app.

  • Where do i find the older versions of ibooks for the iPad Gen1 new versions cannot work

Where can i find older versions of iBooks for the Gen1 iPad the newer versions require an OS upgrade Gen 1 cannot support?

Try downloading them with iTunes on your computer. Then go to the store on your iPad and, if the developer supports it, you should see a link to legacy versions.
    Good luck.

  • Can I use iBooks for the iPad while I'm on an Airplane?

Can i books be accessed on and airplane? Is it allowed?

Yes - as long as Airplane mode is enabled with the iPad which disables wi-fi and bluetooth access and the same for 3G access for the 3G model - no different from being able to use an iPhone or iPod Touch during flight with Airplane mode enabled first.
Some airlines offer wi-fi access during flight - for longer flights, which is available at an additional cost.

  • IBooks on the iPad in library view have a black background

I know the auto-night theme, but it's not that setting, its the library background, whe I try to open an ePub book, the iBook failed and the library background become black, other pages is ok.

I posted about this issue a couple weeks back. There have been no responses to my post, but I can tell you what I discovered on my own.
This happens automatically when your iPad's light sensor notices you're in a dim/dark room. There appears to be no way to disable it. It's supposed to be easier on the eyes, though if you're anything like me it's intensely painful to look at for more than a few moments. If you'd like to provide feedback requesting a way to turn it off, you can post here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ibooks_ios.html
Hope this info helps a bit.

  • How can I sync non-iBookstore books in iBooks on the iPad to iTunes 11?

I have ePub books I've purchased from the Angry Robots website (not all of their books are in the iBookstore). I downloaded them on my iPad and opened them in iBooks. I am now trying to sync them to iTunes on my iMac. Before iTunes 11 they synced automatically, but now I can't figure out how to sync them either automatically or manually. Does anyone know how to copy a book out of iBooks so that I've got a 2nd copy (say I want to push a copy to my iPhone too)?
    Michael

That seems to be the case now with iTunes 11, but in prior versions iTunes would automatically download all new books in iBooks, even ones not purchased in the iBookstore. That's why I developed the workflow I've been using. I'm just now running afoul of the changed behavior in the new version of iTunes.

  • Now in iBooks on the iPad in library view have a transparent background can I reset it to solid colours

When are we going to have some input into how iBooks behaves. I want/need to edit metadata just the same as I can with songs but it hasn't been implemented in iBooks YET.
Looking forward to Sir Jony delivering a fix to this lamentable omission.
PS I'm a "Limey" and not biased against Aluminium People.
    iansai

You can turn off transparency via Settings > General > Accessibility > Increase Contrast > Reduce Transparency 'on' - that will affect all apps, not just iBooks.
For editing metadata you can leave feedback for Apple (these are user-to-user forums) via this page : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ibooks_ios.html
