Formatting mac book pro (no CD is provided)

I Bought Mac Book Pro just twom months ago (15-inch, Late 2011) and having so many errors because of very bad servicing centre .
I might need to format it and partition it also to download windows Xp also. My laptop came without CD and don't know how to do it.
the seller told me that the system instalation  is stored on the hard drive and I should save it on a USB but still confused
can any one help me .

Hi:
I asked Apple support about this last week. They told me that in some cases they can help you do a system restore, even if you're having serious issues with your computer.
But, what I wanted was an actual disc, so that (like you) I could format my hard drive.
I was told they no longer provide copies of the operating system on disc. If you want it, you can either buy it on a thumb drive from the Apple online store for $69, or you can download it from the Apple Online store for $29 and either burn it to your own disc, or put it on your own thumb drive.
Hope this helps.

You'd better make a Genius Bar appointment or take your Mac Book Pro to Authorized Service Provider to show them the circumstances you face with to clear it is possible to repair or not.

So the  question remains as is the title: How do I format my Mac without the installation disk? i bought this mac book pro last year and im not sure if the warrantly is expired yet. If there is noway to format it without the disk, am i able to purchase the disk in apple store? Many thanks.

You don't. You need the installation disk. You can't buy the disk in an Apple store. You need to call AppleCare and order one. Have you serial number handy. To check your warranty status:

    Erase and Install
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
    5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • How to format a flash drive on my mac book pro

I have a mac book pro, but at school they just use PC's. I need to be able to save my homework on my flash drive at home and bring it into class and open it up on the PC. The programs I am using are the Adobe Creative Suite (photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, etc.) and they will let you go back and forth between the mac and the PC. The problem is that I used my flash drive to save my homework, no problem, but after a while it didn't work anymore.
I was told at school, I needed format my flash drive(when it was new) on my mac and then it would be fine to go back and forth. My old flash drive that is messed up, they said just to re-format it on the mac and then it would be fine. How do you do either of those things? Sorry this is so wordy.

Does the older flash drive work on a PC still, cec? If not it may simply be defective. Flash drives can live a hard life!
You shouldn't need to reformat your new stick. I very much doubt that the failure of the old one has anything at all to do with the fact that it wasn't formatted on a Mac .
What OS are you using, by the way? Your various posts seem to say different things.
Just by the way many smaller/older memory sticks will be formatted as FAT-16 rather than FAT-32. Disk Utility , from memory , will actually automatically do this if the drive is under a certain size.
    see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FileAllocationTable#Future :
+FAT is still the normal file system for removable media (with the exception of CDs and DVDs), with FAT12 used on floppies, and FAT16 on most other removable media (such as flash memory cards for digital cameras and USB flash drives). Most removable media are not yet large enough to benefit from FAT32, although some larger flash drives, like SDHC, do make use of it. FAT16 is used on these drives for reasons of compatibility and size overhead.+
    Cheers

TVs don't support "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", so you will probably have to use FAT32. To format the external drive, follow the same steps as you did to format it with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but in the erasing screen, select "MS-DOS (FAT)" as "Format". Note that FAT32 isn't compatible with files bigger than 4 GB. Also, you may have to format the external drive in a PC

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
Then boot from that on your computer and install
You need an internet connection to install via Recovery mode

  • Word 2011 for Mac Book pro - I have found that my cursor disappears sometimes when I click on a toolbar function. I found out it is a bug, that the Mac loses 'focus'. I can correct it temporarily by clicking on Format - Font - Cancel. Any info?

I have Word 2011 on a Mac Book Pro and have had problems with a dissapearing cursor - it makes editing tricky
After googling it I found out that there is a bug where the Mac loses focus if you click away from the document - it also does this with italics according to other users.
I had a play with it and found out that when I click on the toolbar in a document where this happens, the cursor disappears, e.g. changing font colour etc. And then, when I click on Format - Font - Cancel it returns
I'd be interested if anyone else has a comment to add, please do
    thanks

BTW (speaking as a Dad of 3 daughters in Grad school) if you don't already have and use a DropBox account, or some other similar online "cloud" based backup of your school documents, you should start doing so immediately. By keeping all of your important documents in the Dropbox folder on your computer, you have instant access to them from any other computer (or iPad), should you be w/o your computer while in for repairs (or if, God forbid, it is stolen). It's free for 2 GB of online storage, which is more than enough for a few years worth of Word documents, etc. (If you get other people to sign up via your email "invitation", then Dropbox gives you even more free storage space.) Every time you close a document, it is updated on the Dropbox servers (encrypted), if it is in the Dropbox folder (assuming you give it a few seconds to update before turning off your computer). Do a google search of "Cloud based storage comparisons" to compare the amount of free space each of the competing services give you.

  • I had formatted my mac book pro few days back

I had formatted my mac book pro few days back & before doing so i had copied the iphoto library & backed it up on a external hard drive. After formatting i installed the mountain lion & i see there was no iPhoto so i had to buy & download again. Once done with this i copied the iphoto library into the picture folder & also did open it with the iphoto. This is about 25 gb og my photos. So thn i deleted the backup in the external hard drive. But now today after couple of days i open my iphoto & i see no photos at all, there is absoulety nothing. dont know where all my photos are gone . & i have deleted my trash couple of times in the last few days. Is there any way to retierive these photos.I am lost.. n totally heart broken. Please help.

    No
And there was no reason to pruchase iPhoto again - it comes with yooru computer and could have been installed form the original source
since you have no backup the only possible way to recover your photos (but not your iPhoto library) is disk recovery software like file salvage
Not having a backup means that you are 100% Guarenteed to lose all of yoru files including your photos sooner or later - thingk do happen - in fact one probably just did - you must always have good backups (I have three) if your photos and files are important to you

  • If i have mac os x lion running on my MAC book Pro and i need to update with OSX mountain lion, Do i need to format ?

If i have OSX lion running MAC book pro and i want to update my OS without formatting and loosing my existing data, Is it possible ?
This could be very simple question but not for me as i am unexperience with OSX installations

Make sure your Mac qualifies to run Moutain Lion.
See Step 1 here >  Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
As for the recovery disk, yes.
Actually it's an upgrade not an update to go from Lion to Mountain Lion.

Thanks for your reply. This video was recorded by my own professional camera, Sony PMW EX 3, two years back. But I am neither a professional cameraman nor an editor. I am just like a beginner in both.  I didnt have space in my storage device, so I just copied all my clips, thinking I can edit it latter, without recompressing or editing or whatever I should have done it at that point of time.  Now I need to edit it and use it in my profession. I am very upset.  Please help me in going step by step to get it in FCP X for editing.  Also I would like to know, do I need to buy the Compressor 4 for any reason. I dont mind in buying, if you think it is going to be useful for some reason.  Thank you very much in anticipation for any kind of proper guidance.

  • My Mac Book Pro needs to re download LION. I formatted my Macintosh HD and tried downloading lion from disk utility. Half way through it gives me gray screen saying i need to restart my computer. I can never finish the download and install. Any other ways

My mac book pro crashed during an update a week ago. Since then I have been forced to fomat my macintosh HD drive and attempt to reinstall lion. Halfway through my download of lion, a grey screen pops up telling me to restart my computer. I do such and then nothing ever happens again, I am just brought back to disk utility every time. Why?!?!?!

You can go to the Apple online store and purcahse a copy of Mountain Lion.  This will give you a redemption code, which you can use to download Mountain Lion from the App Store.  Unfortuantely, I'm not aware of any other way to legally purchase it.  I have never seen Apple release Muontain Lion on DVD.
In terms of Apple Service, they just need the serial number of the machine to check the purcahse date.  It is usually correct, to within a few weeks.  A quick Google search should give you the correct number to dial.
    I hope this helps.

It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files.
