Formatting Mac Mini

Good Morning / Good Evening
I'm facing a serious peoblem, my Mac Mini's DVD drive stopped working; it reads nothing!! I'm trying to format my computer without using the DVD drive. So can you please help me how to do that using an external method? I already have its original OS DVDs !!
Thanks in advance

Do you have an external Drive?
Do both your Macs have Firewire?
If so it may work to use your Install Disc in the other Mac...
If you have another Mac with Firewire, you can use it's Optical Drive for the Mini.
Put the Disc in the Other Mac, boot the other Mac into FireWire target disk mode...

Boot the Mini with the Option/alt key held down & the Disc in the other one shoild show as a boot choice.

Hi guys I have a mac mini mid 2010 that I stupidly reformatted the hard drive to give it to a friend, thinking it would be easy to reinstall - I haven't got the original system discs cause again I'm dumb!!!!!!!!! And I am struggling to get it reinstalled, what is the best method to install this? Would a 10.6 retail version run?

    1. Phone Apple Support and order replacements.
    2. Only if it's newer than the computer.

  • Format mac mini offline

Is there a way to format offline my MacMini and have a clean install of OS X Lion? I tried to use internet recovery but is way too slow and after more than 40 hours it was not even half the process.
Now I am facing the screen and it is telling me a bad "269hours " left. I think is stupid that I still have to wait to be able to use my mac.
    Please give me good news...

    Perhaps something like this....

  • Mac Formatted iPod Mini, want to use on PC then back to Mac?

I want to use my Mac formatted iPod Mini on a PC when I'm away for Christmas, but when I return home I want to use it on my Mac again. Is formatting the iPod to a PC required to do this? I don't want to lose all my music when I'm away because there will be no way to get it back till I return home. And, if I must format for a PC, what will happen when I plug it back into a Mac? Do I have to reformat again? Has anybody accomplished this successfully?

An iPod formatted with Windows will work with Windows or Mac.
An iPod formatted with Mac will not work on Windows. WIndopws cannot read Mac.
If you format with Windows, you will not need to reformat with Mac.

  • Mac Mini G4 Unsupported Video Format DVI to HDMI 42 Phillips 1080P LCD TV

When connecting my Mac Mini G4 to my 42" Phillips 1080P LCD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable I get a message on the TV "Unsupported Video Format" message. I can connect my PowerBook G4 using the same cable and it connects great.
One thing I have noticed is when connecting my Mini via DVI cable to my 17" LCD monitor the screen is a fated red. But using a VGA cable the screen is fine. I don't know if this is having to do anything with the issue of connecting to my LCD TV.
    Any suggestions?

Make sure the connections are good and tighten down the thumb screws on all connectors. If two monitors are giving problems with DVI, it could be there is a hardware problem with the DVI port on the mini.
Also, try starting in Safe mode (boot while holding down the shift key) and see if you get a useable screen in that case. If you still get the unsupported video format message, then that would further suggest some hardware problem with DVI.

  • Mac mini core2 duo 10.7.2 not seeing files on usb external drives - mac formatted - ownership ignored-  until finder refresh - any idea

finder has problems showing folders& files on external drives on mac mini with 10.7.2
this is affecting 2 external usb drives both mac formatted - ownership ignored
i click on the drive and see nothing
a refresh of the finder window will make the files appear
if i click on a disclosure arrow, the arrow turns down but no files are displayed
if i double click on the folder it opens that folder in an empty view - a refresh will bring the files visible
interestingly if i eject the drive and plug back it , it will usually display the contents of folders already visited last time but not folders i hadn't looked at - they require a refresh
programs such as iTunes can link to those files when they are not visible in finder
anyone else run into this - any suggestions
oh and drives seem to be working fine on my macbook pro with 10.7.3
    cheers folks
    Simon

John -I'm pretty sure it the mac mini thats having the issue
the two drives - each with their own cable - seem to work perfectly with my other mac
the mac mini is having no problem reading the files itunes and other programs access the files on the drives without a problem
its just the finder is not displaying the files without a refresh of the view
    but thanks anyway

  • How do I format new Samsung 850 Pro SSD in my 2012 Mac Mini

So my 12 year old is frustrated by the slower speed of his mac mini, and with some of his birthday money and my expertise (which I hope to borrow from you and pass off as my own), I've purchased a Samsung 850 Pro SSD (256 GB) and am going to install it for him.  We've already increased the memory.   I've also purchased the OWC data doubler and am planning to install the Samsung with the original Mac hard drive.
Having watched the install videos several times I feel fairly competent to do that, but my question is what to do then to access and make the most use of the SSD so everything (1) works and (2) runs as fast as possible?    For example, first, do I need to copy the OS to the SSD and delete from the Mac hard drive, and then somehow set up the SSD as the main drive?   And do I do this before I install the SSD or can I do it after?   Finally, what do I need to do to ensure that the computer uses the two drives optimally thereafter for maximum speed/performance.  You can see my level of expertise from my questions.
Other than the memory and the SSD install, we're not planning any other modifications, and his use of the mini is pretty vanilla (games, videos, etc.).    Any step-by-step help for a relative novice in this area (me) would be much appreciated.
    My Mac's specs:
    Mac mini (late 2012)
Processor:  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 16 GB
    OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    1. Partition and format the SSD.
    2. Install OS X on the SSD.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
How to use an SSD with your HDD
If you are going to use an SSD as a boot drive together with your existing HDD as the "data" drive, here's what you can do.
After installing the SSD you will need to partition and format the SSD using Disk Utility. Then, install OS X on the SSD. After OS X has been installed boot from the SSD. Use Startup Disk preferences to set the SSD as the startup volume.
Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your user account listing in the sidebar and select Advanced Options from the context menu. You will see a field labeled "Home dir:" At the right end you will see a Change button. Click on it. In the file dialog locate the Home folder now located on the HDD (HDD/Users/account_name/.) Select the folder, click on Open button. Restart the computer as directed. When the computer boots up it will now be using the Home folder located on the HDD.
Another more technical method involving the Terminal and aliases is discussed in depth here: Using OS X with an SSD plus HDD setup - Matt Gemmell. This is my preferred approach because I can select which of the Home's folders I want on the HDD and which I don't want. For example, I like to keep the Documents and Library folders on the SSD because I access their content frequently.
Be sure you retain the fully bootable system on your HDD in case you ever need it.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), see if you can set a good resolution.

I plugged in Mac Mini 2010, to my TV Via HDMI, I changed the resolution on the mac,  and its stuck with a messege that reads " format not supported" how can I set it back to 1080p so I can work?

    Reset the PRAM
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Then if that doesn't get your there, startup in Safe Mode.

  • Mac Mini 2012 formatting external drive takes forever

Just recently, I attempted to back up the primary drive with Time Machine, this took several hours.  Note, in the past the back up only too a few minutes.  I tried several other drives, it too took hours to back up.  Additionally, to format a drive with either firewire 800 or USB, this takes more than an hour for only 250gig.  The drives are either Gtech or Lacie, which in the past have worked properly and there have been no changes to the operating system. Any suggestions?
    Mac Mini Late 2012
    4 gig ram
    Maverick / Intel 10.9.5

I set at test: 250 MB, this took just under an hour with no errors.  To format a 250Gig drive, 3 hours, this was never the case a week ago. The system and applications perform fine, no changes, just the formatting and TM backups.  Also, I installed CCC, it works just fine, only it takes 8 hours to clone the first time, and 2 hours to backup the second.  Interesting.
    Primary drive is 500GB

  • Formatting hard drive on Mac Mini

Hi, I just bought a mac book and i'm selling my mac mini to a friend. now, i know i can format my hard drive though disk utilities, but when i erase my hard drive, what happens the next time i turn on my computer? i'm thinking it will be just like when i first got the mac, it will ask me for the OS X installation disk, and away i go. basically, i'm trying to hand this computer over in the same state it was when i pulled it out of the box. any help/clarification would be great.
    cheers

Erasing your drive with Disk Utility will delete everything on your hard drive, but then it won't have any OS. I have never had an OS-less disk, but I doubt Open Firmware (or EFI, if it's an Intel Mini) will ask for your OS X Install disc(s). You will probably see an error message or something.
What you should do is follow Mario's suggestion and re-install Mac OS X, doing an Erase & Install. That will erase everything on your hard drive & install a fresh copy of Mac OS X. When your friend turns his new Mini on, he will see the "Welcome" screen and will be guided through the original setup process ...

  • Mac mini firewire vs Mac pro firewire, trouble with medium format digital back

    Hi
I'm trying to use a Mac Mini to run a medium format digital back, I have problems with the connection between the digital back and Mac mini dropping out randomly meaning I have to unplug the firewire and restart the back, sometimes restart the software.
Manufacturer says it is due to Mac mini firewire not supplying enough stable power to the back and to use a powered firewire repeater.
I've tried that it hasn't really made much of a difference.
Manufactuer now says the Mac Mini's are just not up to the job they are significantly diferent to the Mac pro range.
    Is this correct?
So I can't use a small form factor mac mini to do a single task - tether to a camera and run camera software. Doesn't really seem that big an ask?
    thanks in advance.
    Nigel.

you may think it's a single task, but that's on top of the underlying OS processes.  also, i'm assuming that your mini is only running a single hard drive, which means your software is competing against the OS for access to the write heads on your drive.  have you confirmed that your system memory isn't generating too many page outs?  if you're in activity monitor and you see that count increasing, you need more RAM.
you could also try to install a second hard drive in your mini, and designate that drive as your write target for the camera software.
is this for video, or stills?
