Formatting my mac book air

Like i have a problem with my bank account they asked me to format my computer
I was looking for how to do it and I found to restart it and press comand+R
Is it just this?? I made already the back up

That’s not a normal troubleshooting method. If desired and the computer’s running Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, do that, open the Disk Utility, erase the main partition, and install a fresh OS.
If it’s running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier or Lion was installed from a thumbdrive, there’s no recovery partition and you’ll need to use a disk instead.

Firstly, what is the source of the 10.6.4 disc? Is it the original installation disc for your MacBook, or one 'borrowed' from another computer?
It isn't the retail version, because that's 10.6.3.
Assuming it's the correct disc (i.e. the one that shipped with your Mac), you need to boot from it again.
    OK the language page.
From the installer screen, ignore the continue button, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
Run Repair Disk. If that comes up as disk OK, click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need.
Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When the Macintosh HD volume appears below the drive name, quit DU and see if you can then install.
If the screen after the language screen doesn't show the menu bar, it may be necessary to use another Mac to do the job with the MB in Firewire Target Disc Mode. If it won't boot in TDM, or the MB doesn't have FireWire then it's getting very difficult.

  • How can I remove iCloud from my Mac Book and iPad and Mac Book Air and then just reload back on the MB Air and iPad only?

How can I remove iCloud from my Mac Book and iPad and Mac Book Air and then just reload back on the MB Air and iPad only, which have a different user with a separate Apple ID?

You have quite muddied up the waters, I'm afraid. Assuming you now have a single GUID partition formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled, you should try reinstalling Lion:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

Can anyone recommend an external storage device to supplement my mac book air?  I already have a time capsule but want the new device to replicate the data on that so ideally would like a device that i can connect to the time capsule through a cable.

    Hi CJR
I'm not sure how Time Capsule can be replicated onto your external drive but there is a USB port on the back of TC that can be hooked up to any recent external drive.
Another thing to think about , besides a Time Capsule failure, is the theft of your Time Capsule, so it might be a good idea to consider separating any redundant back-up from your Time Capsule or both my be stolen.
TC will back up until full and then begin deleting the oldest back-ups.  Mine is a 2TB Time capsule.
My back-up plan is as follows:
    1.  Macbook Air back-up on Time Capsule though Time Machine backs up everything - I think it's about every 30 min or so.
    2.  Contacts, reminders, appointments, notes, email are backed up through iCloud.
    3.  iTunes and non-itunes purchased music is on iMatch (and no need to back-up) and any non-iTunes music is backed up on an HP external drive (in case Time Capsule dies)
    4.  Photos are on my MacBook Air and are backed up on my HP external drive.
    5.  Office documents (Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) are stored in a Skydrive app (like iCloud) and Skydrive syncs these docuemnts with the MS  cloud and my old PC and does not alter their native format like storing in iCloud would do.
    Cheers

  • How do I unlock file permissions on an external flash drive connected to a mac book air?

Hi there, I have just synced my I tunes library to I Tunes on my mac book air using a WD external flash drive (which I have always used as my storage drive for my entire library and was previously running on a Sony Vaio PC) and although I can now see and play all my files I can't download new content as I get an error message stating "there was a problem downloading.... you don't have priveleges to make changes" which from my research is because the flash drive I tunes folder permissions within it are locked to read only.
Which is where the problem lies as I can't see anyway to change this when clicking on the drives in my devices and going to the get info option, as although it shows the permission status - you can't edit that?
Note I know this is the issue as if I change the I tunes media folder location back to the defualt folder as the hard drive on the mac book I can then download new files no problem, however I dont want to store my content on the hard drive of my mac book air as my library is over 300gb and want to keep it all on the external (as I always did when running I tunes on my PC).
Any help will be apprecaited guys!
    Thanks

If the drive is formatted as MS-DOS or exFAT, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to repair it.
If it's formatted as NTFS, either reformat it or install third-party software which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives.

I'll venture that your problem here is that you're using two very different versions of Mac OS X.  The USB adapter has been useful to me when making big downloads or while using other networks, but it might not be your case.
Here's what I would advise, though it may be less than stellar:  Copy the files you need into folders and move them through a USB flash drive or using that external hard drive of yours. (Could the format be the reason your MBA can't see it?). Some stuff like calendars and contacts can be exported too. At least in Lion, I haven't used Tiger in a while.
    Good luck.

  • HT4399 I have a Mac Book Air and have purchased individually numbers and pages.  I was given an excel file on a thumb drive and cannot open it.  Is there a way to open the xcl file in numbers?

I have a MacBook Air, and have purchased individually Numbers and Pages.  I was sent an Excel file on a thumb drive but cannot open the file.  The message states that the Excel file is encryeted.  Is ther any way to open a PC file on my Mac Book Air?
    Pat and Bob

Excel does not use the .xcl extension for any of its native file formats?  The only files I've ever seen with xcl as the file extension were associated with embedded application code projects.
If this is in fact an Excel file, but an encrypted one, you cannot open it (in excel or any compatible application) without the decryption password.

my mac book air turn on with grey apple icon and spining wheel. then it wont turn off.pls help

Have exactly the same problem with my wife's MacBook Air. After restaring in Restore mode and trying to repair the disk (Disk Utility showed errors in the verification), the system tells me to backup as much data as possible (how?), re-format the disk and restore backed-up files. Error comes up when "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required".
Original restart action was done due to software update requesting it, if I remember correctly, iTunes was updated.
I don't want to start a painful back-up procedure (although I do regular back-ups): how should I know, where iPhoto stores it's data or where my mails are (yes, still using local mail)? How can I access the data if I can't boot?
My iMac's disk crashed also a couple of months ago and I'm still recovering. I have four Apple devices, two of them have failed. Can Apple afford such a ratio?

  • For college/grad school should i get ipad 3 or mac book air?

for college/grad school should i get ipad 3 or mac book air?

Nobody can tell you which one is best for you, it's a personal preference. However, here are a few factors you might want to take into consideration:
1-They're two different devices that serve different purposes. The way you take notes in an iPad is different than the way you would on a MBA. On the iPad, with apps like Evernote and Notability you can take more complete notes than with a MBA. You have the option to have audio notes, write with a Stylus, make diagrams by hand to explain/relate concepts easily. With the external keyboard (for that I'd recommend using the Apple Wireless Keyboard with the InCase Origami Workstation) you could type just as fast as you would on a MBA and format the text just like you would on the MBA. However, for bigger (possibly partner) papers, the MBA would help you. You could start the paper on the iPad without any issues (using Pages or even Evernote) but you'd need a laptop/computer to finalize the project.
2-Portability wise, they're both incredibly light. The iPad is somewhat smaller = lighter but with the keyboard they're about the same. The fact that with the ipad + keyboard combo you can take out the keyboard only when you need it, for me, is an advantage be ause when I don't want to use it, it's not in the way. For others, it's a disadvantage because you have to carry two items instead of one.
3-MBA let's you access all websites and most file types. If one of your classes requires you to go to the Browser and see a Flash enabled page, the iPad would not be of much help. Same goes for any programs you might need to install. On the MBA you'll most likely be able to do so. On the iPad, chances are there won't be an app for that.
4-Aonce you already have a MBP, I'd go for the iPad. If/when the iPad falls short(because of the limitations mentioned above) you can use the laptop. And in the mean time, use the iPad for everything else. That way you get the best of both worlds. You'd only need to take the MBP when you know you'll need it and wont have to carry that weight all the time.
6-Studying (reading, highlighting, annotating) is easier and more intuitive on the iPad. The iPad is great for reading, combine that with the fact that you can leave comments/notes just like you would on a physical piece of paper, and you've got the best way to learn IMO.

  • Problem accessing Seagate External Harddrive from iMac and Mac Book Air

I have a brand new Seagate 2TB external harddrive which I have just used to backup my entire iMac files (photos, videos, etc) via the Time Capsule programme. However I now can't access the files which apparently have been copied onto the Segate. I have now connected the Seagate to my Mac Book Air and it is not even being recognised as an external storage device.
Is someone able to tell me how I can access the files on the external drive?

do you mean "time machine" as opposed to "time capsule" the latter is a back up drive in itself.
before you did your backup was your seagate drive formatted or did you just connect and instruct the mac to back up to the drive.
if the drive was not formatted then you will need to format the drive using disc utility.

  • Downloaded Canon printer/scanner drivers for Canon PIXMA MP520 and MX860 on Mac Book laptop, and they worked.  However, when I downloaded the same two drivers on Mac Book Air, neither worked.

Downloaded Canon printer/scanner drivers for Canon PIXMA MP520 and MX860 on Mac Book laptop, and they worked.  However, when I downloaded the same two drivers on Mac Book Air, neither worked.

I wasn't aware that VueScan charged a yearly license.
You simply launch Image Capture and if the scanner is recognized it will be listed in the SHARED list in the left display column.  Select the scanner name and the app will start an overview scan.  You will also see a list of scanning options in the right display column (resolution, paper size, file output format, etc.
The above description is when everything is working correctly, which has been the case for me.
    Good luck.

  • HT1338 How to setup an external HDMI screen with a Mac Book Air

How do I setup an external HDMI screen with a Mac Book Air? I am using an Apple accessory Moshi cable interface with a Samsung Syncmaster screen SB24B300 and I am unable to get any response. Thank you.

You need to connect it to the computer using either USB or Thunderbolt. Setup is simply prepping the SSD:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
