Formatting new 2 gb card in fat32?

I bought a new 2 gb and it was factory formatted (fat16 i think) so i use it. However, I was told that it is better to format it in fat32 rather than in fat, since fat32 saves more space (it almost doubles it!) and card works faster. Can anyone confirm this? Also, is it reliable enough?
I use N95 and kingston 2 gb microsd, i just copied my photos and videos, and downloaded some maps to my new card and it works.. I guess i should have formated it before for best results..

Interesting question ! Without performing proper timings etc. I'd say this is due in part down to the hardware and Operating System being used - so comparing like with like is vital ! However from a space perspective, FAT32 is indeed more efficient !
In terms of doubling the space available - the short answer is no - the official answer from Microsoft quotes a 10-15% increase in disk space usage efficiency
You can find the full article here :

You can still convert your microSD card to use FAT32, by copying the data off your microSD card to your hard disk, reformatting your memory card to FAT32, and then copying the data back to your memory card.
You should remember to keep all file attributes the same such as hidden etc. to ensure that none of the applications on the phone start complaining that something has changed !

  • Format new network drive as FAT32 or HSF+?

    Hi,
I've searched but can't find a clear answer on this —
I've just purchased a new Lacie 500GB network drive. I can mount the drive fine via ethernet network and by USB. The drive is now on a home network of only Mac computers, some still connected to the network via ethernet and one laptop via wireless.
I want the new network drive to be an archive site for all my family's data, including music, photos and movies, and for that data to be independantly available for playing on each machine when they connect somewhere on the network.
My question is — before I start transferring all that data to the new drive, in what format would it be best for me to prepare it?
It is currently formatted as FAT32. What are the advantages of HSF+? Is it in my long-term benefit to leave the drive as FAT32 or reformat it now into HSF+? If I did change to HSF+, could such a change potentially disrupt the operating system of the drive itself?
I'm sorry I don't have much experience with this so your advice would be welcome.
    Thanks
    P.

Thanks for pointing out your confusion!
Seems I did miss the Network Drive part, yet looking at this pdf...
    http://www.lacie.com/download/whitepaper/wpetherneten.pdf
It say Mini, but if I decipher it correctly, it looks like it might support HFS+, not sure.
I'd try it based on that I have a Ximeta 200GB Network Drive, (Ethernet 10/100 or USB2), and it came Fat32 formatted, and I made it HFS+), combined with the fact that OSX's Disk Utility can Format, (reformat), drives that big to Fat32... only XP can't, ME,98, 2000 and such can.

  • Formatting 2GB SD card with FAT32 using Disk Utility

    Hello
I'm trying to format a 2GB SD card in a card reader/writer to FAT32 using Disk Utility. Unfortunately the only option available under the Erase button is "MS-DOS File System (FAT16)". I need to do this to upgrade the firmware in my Sony TV which requires a FAT32 formatted USB device.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tim
P.S. Unfortunately I'm stuck in OSX Tiger on an old B&W G3 while my G5 undergoes repairs.

Ok, well anyone know of a free OSX 3rd party utility that will enable me to format the SD card to FAT32?
Unfortunately I don't have a larger SD card.
I tried my 1GB SD card on a XP PC and I'm not given the option of FAT32. So it may be a limitation of the SD specification, which means you may just need to bite the bullet and buy a larger SD card.
Perhaps you can ask Sony if there's some setting on your device to use something other than a FAT32 SD card. (I mean, this is Sony after all, you'd think they'd prefer Memorystick. )

  • Fat16 Format With Micro SD Card

I need to format a micro SD card from my Arduino micro sd reader to fat16.  I followed an online tutorial like so:
    diskutil list
    Which brought up this list:
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *256.1 GB   disk0
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk0s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS Macintosh 10.7 SSD      175.0 GB   disk0s2
       3:                 Apple_Boot Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk0s3
4:       Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP                80.2 GB    disk0s4
    /dev/disk1
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *750.2 GB   disk1
       1:                        EFI                         209.7 MB   disk1s1
       2:                  Apple_HFS WD 750GB Black HD       749.8 GB   disk1s2
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:     FDisk_partition_scheme                        *7.8 GB     disk2
       1:                 DOS_FAT_32 NO NAME                 7.8 GB     disk2s1
    Then I typed:
    diskutil partitionDisk disk2 MBRFormat "MS-DOS FAT16" NO_NAME 7.8G
    Then it displays this:
    Started partitioning on disk2
    Unmounting disk
    Creating the partition map
Waiting for the disks to reappear
    Formatting disk2s1 as MS-DOS (FAT16) with name NO_NAME
Error: -69850: The chosen size is not valid for the chosen file system
Although it shows up in Disk Utility as: disk2s1, should I take notice of the Error: -69850 or does it mean I've done it wrong?  Also I've tried different partition sizes and this error still comes up.
    P.s. I'm using Mac OS X Lion.
    Thanks in advance.

Hmmm, FAT16 or FAT32? FAT16 is limited to 4 GB...

  • Re: Upgrade Portege R100 WLAN to wap - new mini pci-card oder pcmia?

    Hi!
My old but loved R100 is not able to connect to my wlan-Router due to the fact,
that the build-in pci-card doesn't support wap. So i have to update my notebook
either with a new mini-pc card oder a pcmia-card. Which solution is better?
    Best regards,
    Rita

    Thanks for the reply.
Plesase help me read this carefully.
Actually, my computer is Portege R150 series. I bought it from a friend that just came back from china. All the functions are working except wlan and sd memory card. I formatted the operating system that came with it and installed another xp proffessional and downloaded all the drivers online. In the device manager, I didnt see the wlan card so I decided to open it and I checked it, the card wasnt installed on the board, it must have been removed by someone I dont know, tthe antenna cable wasnt there also. I then bought another intel wlan card. I downloaded the driver and i installed it. It was driven and the system was detecting it. but for the fact that there was no antenna, when I search for wifi, i do not see any newtwork. I then decided to buy the antenna cable. I bought it and there are two connectors on the wlan card. one is main and the other is aux. I connected it on main and I know that the other end of the same cable should be connected somewhere in the computer to the antenna. I cant see any connector on the motherboard that looks like where I can plug that cable. Thats my problem.
Please if I can get the installation manual, i'd very much appreciate. Maybe the manual might help me cos I dont want to buy a pcmcia cos iv already bought a minipci and my machine detects it, i just need to connect it to the antenna, and I dont know where the antenna port is.
    Thank you.

  • Ext4 format support for microSD cards on Galaxy S5?

Can we get ext4 format support for microSD cards on Galaxy S5? New permissions that come on KitKat break some of my apps that need local storage. The enhanced permissions available with EXT4 should fix this as that is the internal Flash format. "Use the cloud" is a non-starter so don't even suggest it.

Not directly, but as a large customer they have a big say in what gets loaded in the ROM as evidenced by the many (unwanted) preloaded apps. Adding EXT4 file system support to restore Verizon's end customer user experience is something they can insist on. It is a simple requirement to add when the end manufacturer builds a custom ROM for Verizon. The underlying system already supports it and alternative ROMs (CM) have been created with that feature. I'm just not ready to install alternative ROM code on a phone that was just released, and only a week in my possession.

I just changed my residence to the US and now I cant register my new US credit card on itunes cause the state list doesnt match to the US states, what should I do?

Your credit card info, billing address must be the same country as the iTunes store country you registering.
For example, you can’t have a credit card from a U.S. bank with  a U.S. billing address registered in the iTunes store for China.
I tried to change my payment information too, but it happened the same, I can change the information but when I get to the state part, it only shows the other country states
Remove all payment info and save it.
Then change the iTunes store country to U.S., add a U.S. credit card with a U.S. billing address.
As previously suggested, if this does not work, contact iTunes store support.

  • New USB Airport card

I'm probably the 1,000 person asking this question...please forgive me but I need an answer ASAP without alot of research. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No I personally didn't know much about them. I looked into this over a year ago as a solution for a CRT iMac and didn't find anything compatable. Now I hear of people buying cheapies off eBay with great results.
It would be a great solution if it works as promised especially with the problems that people have with some extreme cards. I've got a PowerBook G4 Mercury that has absolutely abysmal range from it's original setup. I was considering scabbing an large Yagi antenna on the top of the display.

I have registered a credit card for purchasing apps from the app store. My bank has issued a new chip based card and now the 16 digit numbers have changed. How do I register the new card for flowless purchases?

Go to Apple Menu > App Store > View my account > sign in and then edit the payment details with the new card details.
I am assuming that your card and supporting bank are in the same country as your residential (billing) address and that you are using the App Store of that country.

  • EMac can't find new AP Express card

I bought a new Airport Express card for my downstairs eMac X.4.6. I am writing this on my wireless laptop so I know the Airport wireless is working. I have installed the card twice in the eMac to be sure connections were secure.
When I run the Setup Asst, it says "no airport card installed." I ran the installer that came with the card, have shutdown and restarted. I am at a loss as to what to do next. The computer was previously on a cable modem and worked fine. Any suggestions?
    KC

So, are you still saying your eMacG4 (May 2003 or newer) does not see
the Extreme card? Did you remove and then carefully and somewhat force-
fully reinstall the card; being sure it snaps down into the slot all the way?
Could be, that since the OS X was upgraded and originally the machine
    did not have the Airport Card installed, it may be stubborn in seeing it;
if there is no physical problem in the connections to the card, or the card.
Since the software is installed in the computer even when the card is
not present (in OSX) the hardware change should not be a problem.
If you have a way of testing the eMac's Airport Extreme card in another
computer, and/or swapping the card with another of the same spec to see
if the issue resides in the Card or in the Computer (software or hardware)
that may narrow down the problem a little more.
I'm not sure if such things as resetting the PRAM or other keyboard
startup voodoo will do, to suffice in resolving this issue. If the System
can't see the Card in the Profiler, it either isn't connected or it may be
a damaged card. Cross-testing in another machine can check this; and
if the card is proven to likely be defective after checking/testing, you
may be able to get another card from the retailer you bought it from.
    Good luck in this matter!

  • My new credit/debit card is being rejected or doesnt match my banks records - however the bank says it is correct.

How do I get my new credit/debit card to be accepted by Apple when it always says that the information on my card doesn't match the information provided (my bank confirmed the address as correct on file). I currently live outside of the US (Colombia) and I think that this might be the issue. I used to be able to purchase before my credit/debit card was replaced.

Is your card a debit or a credit card ? Debit cards don't appear to still be accepted in all countries.
You have your Columbia billing address on your account, and your credit card was issued by a Columbian bank ? And the name and address that the card is registered to matches the name and address (including spacing and layout) that you have on your account : iTunes Store: My credit card's security code or zip code does not match my bank's records ? And you've entered all the card's new details e.g. end date and security code, and tried selecting 'none' as your payment method, existing the payment details, and entering the card's details from scratch ?

are you trying to format/erase it while it's in your Macbook?
    I have 2 Crucial M4 SSD.
Connect via external USB.  Boot your computer with your old hard drive and proceed with the erase feature if you're planning on cloning your drive.
