Formatting new Seagate FA GoFlex Desk Media for Mac

I purchased a 2 TB external hard drive, which needs to be formatted for Mac. See details below:
Name : Seagate FA GoFlex Desk Media
Type : Disk
Disk Identifier : disk1
Media Name : Seagate FA GoFlex Desk Media
Media Type : Generic
Connection Bus : USB
Connection Type : External
Writable : Yes
Ejectable : Yes
Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed : No
Location : External
Total Capacity : 1.8 TB (2,000,398,933,504 Bytes)
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
Disk Number : 1
Partition Number : 0
I clicked on the icon, went to "Partition" and selected "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". I clicked "Partition", which it did quickly, but now everything is ghosted. The icon also does not appear on the desktop.
Several questions:
1) Do I need to select the "volume scheme" - I did this once and it remained on "Creating Partition Map" for several hours
2) Do I choose "GUID Partition Table" or "Apple Partition Map?"
Thank you much...

Actually, I just checked some more details of my iMac:
Machine Name: iMac
Machine Model: PowerMac4,2
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 256 MB
Bus Speed: 100 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.3.4f2
So with a PowerMac, will I have booting problems with a USB-connected external hard drive vs. a Firewire? From what I can tell, USB moves far slower than Firewire
The USB external drives (Maxtor, Seagate) are "Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec" while the Firewire (WD) is "Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec." That is bad...
Pls. advise...

  • My Seagate FA GoFlex Desk Media 1TB Unmounts then Remounts

    Mid-2010 iMac,
Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core i3
    Memory  12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3   (I recently upgraded from 4GB to 12GB on May 2. Purchased Crucial CT2KIT51264BC1067 8GB 204-PIN PC3-8500 SODIMM DDR3 (4GBx2)).
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
I have been using my Seagate FA GoFlex Desk 1TB external hard drive, using usb 2.0, since day one of using my iMac (purchased in Feb. 2011). I use it for storing Pictures and Videos. Never had a problem, with this drive, my WD 1TB drive, or my other WD 1TB drive used for Time Machine.
I then, first checking to make sure everything was compatible, upgraded to Lion O.S.X on March 21, 2012. Everything worked just fine. About 2 weeks ago, I started noticing an error box popping up saying that a disk was not properly ejected...etc....so I turned off the iMac, unplugged all external items, turned the iMac back on..waited until it was fully operational, and plugged everything back in. No problems.
A couple of hours later, the message popped up again, but then I noticed the Seagate drive disappear, then reappear. Did some extensive research on the net and could not find a proper solution.
I then proceded to do an extensive reformat on the drive...it's now reformatted at Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Restored my files (just Pictures and Movies) from Time Machine...but no change...it still unmounts and remounts a few seconds later.
I even unchecked..put hard disk to sleep in the energy saver section in preferences. (I even rechecked it, still happens, unchecked again, no change)
Now I've noticed when this happens, unmounts and remounts, my Time Machine thinks this is a new drive and backs up the entire drive again, filling up my TM drive and deleting previous files to make room. Before the upgrade, I could go into my TM drive and see over 50 files of back ups and the drive being nowhere near having files deleted to make room. Now I go into TM drive and there are only 5 to 6 files there, and one gets deleted all the time at this # of files.
I want to purchase another external hard drive to see if this stops, but I'm afraid of purchasing anything out there as I read of more and more problems.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem yet? If not, are there any ext. drives that will work without this happening?
    Thank you.

The O.P. reported using Seagate Diagnostics unsuccessfully, but I wondered if anyone had used the
    GoFlex for Mac software.
Below is Seagate's description. You can see that it specifically says that it includes drivers to disable the built-in sleep timer (which I think is the cause of the problem(. Somewhere in the Seagate discussion forums I think I saw that you don't have to set anything, just installing the relevant drivers is enough.
As I mentioned previously, it is possible to look at the scripts in the installation package, but I found them too complicated to understand.
I agree with gogogut that having the drive spin constantly is not a good solution for most people. I only used that drive for video programs and processing them, so I unmounted and turned the drive off except when I needed it to be active.
    File Version: 1.1.2
    File Name: Seagate GoFlex Software.mpkg.zip
    File Size: 5MB
Supported Operating Systems: MacOS 10.5.11+, MacOS 10.6
    Summary
Seagate Drive Settings application for MacOS is included on the GoFlex series of drives. Simply double click it to install the software. If the software was deleted, it can be downloaded using the link below.
This software package includes Diagnostic software for testing the drive, drivers to disable the built-in sleep timer on the drive, and drivers to enable the capacity gauge for GoFlex Desk models. It has now been updated to support 64-bit and 32-bit version of MacOS.

  • I want to format a Seagate Expansion External Hard Drive for Mac and PC

I ordered a Seagate Expansion 2 TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive to use with my new Mac and my old PC (or at least get my photos off of both and put them on the drive).  I thought all HDs could be formatted to use by both, I was able to get a Mac HD to work with my PC in 2008 (but it died). I am reading that this drive is PC only.  I have Parallels and Windows 8 on my Mac if worse comes to worse but I would like all of my computers, real, virtual old and new to be able to access the external drive.  Has anyone encountered this issue before?  What should I format it in? FAT32? If yes, how would I go about that on a Mac.  Or should I just return it?
I'm kind of Mac clueless.  I spent my childhood through college on a Mac but I graduated right when OSX came around and I don't know how to work with the Mac "under the hood" like I did with OS9 and with Windows.  So please talk to me like I am an an adult idiot.
    Thanks!!!!

The optimum choice is to format it ExFAT, but do so on the PC, not the Mac. Alternatively, you can make two partitions - one for the Mac; one for the PC. Partition the drive using GUID when you make the two partitions. Format one using Mac OS Extended, Journaled. Format the other on your PC using NTFS if you won't need to write to it from the OS X side or use ExFAT if you do.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) you will use for Windows from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to MSDOS.
    6. Click on the Erase button.
When you connect the drive to your PC reformat the PC volume to either NTFS or ExFAT.

  • Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk frustration

    Hi all,
I recently purchased a 2TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk external hard drive. Unfortunately, there seems to be a conflict with either my hardware or software. The drive seems to go to sleep after a period on non-use and consequently crashes the Finder and various apps when trying to gain access. I can see the icon for the drive... even navigate down some recently used directories, but then I'll go too far, get the beach ball and have to force restart the entire machine. The same will happen if I'm using an app trying to access files on the drive. I can force quit the app and/or Finder, but they will not be available for use until I force quit the entire machine. I've been trying to solve this problem for a couple weeks now without success, so I thought I'd turn to the Mac community here.
    * The drive has been reformatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    * I have used Seagate Diagnostics and the drive passes all tests.
    * I have disabled drive sleep under Energy Saver.
    * I have tested the drive on a MacBook running the same OS as my iMac (10.6.6) without a problem.
    * I have disabled Time Machine backup to a TimeCapsule to see if that helps. Does not.
    * I have disconnected other drives to see if that helps. Does not.
    * I have disabled virus scans, media servers and other apps (that I know of) that sometime run in BG.
    * I have tried different USB ports and different wall plugs.
I'm beginning to think there is some sort of compatibility issue with my hardware, but it could still be some sort of software that is conflicting. I simply cannot find the pattern.
I spoke with Seagate support and we got as far as the recommendation to test on another machine. The drive seemed to work fine there, so I'll have to continue troubleshooting with them from that point, but I thought someone here might have some ideas as well.

The O.P. reported using Seagate Diagnostics unsuccessfully, but I wondered if anyone had used the

  • Time Machine Error message with Seagate Backup Plus ext HD for Mac.

Got a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8.  Bought a 4TB Seagate Backup Plus ext HD for Mac. Have 750GB of HD space I'm trying to back up via timemachine. Error message after 498GB backed.  Tried reformatting, repairing disk, etc. and get stuck just before 500GB every time. Suggestions?

Have you tried repairing your system disk? It may be encountering a bad file on the Mac rather than a bad spot on the Seagate.

  • Problems formatting new seagate 1tb external hdd

    hi,
new here as... well... I've not had problems with my mac prior to this.
I did have a buffalo 1tb drive, but earlier in the week I got a warning that this was unstable and I should copy data from it. saved my itunes library, and attempted to re-format the drive, but disk utility was unable to do so. I was getting errors stating it was unable to verify the drive, or re-format it.
I've just got a new seagate 1tb drive and I'm having similar/identical problems: I can't verify the drive and I'm unable to format it either.
I have been able to format the drive as an ms-dos (fat) drive, but if memory serves itunes/mac ran into problems when there was more than 200gb on the disc (and my itunes library's already past that!)
any and all help gratefully received.
    cheers!
    Leo.

Try erasing the drive and reformatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using disk Utility from your install disk. First mount the drive on your desktop then
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. select the drive you want to format, and see if that works.

  • Before I transfer files from my PC to the new imac should I load office for Mac and parallees? Will this mean I have to open the new account on my imac first and thus have two user accounts when I transfer the PC? I would prefer to only have one account.

IIt was in my mind to load office then transfer. After to load paralels and transfer my windows system. I have a new copy of office for Mac plus paralels PC to Mac transfer version 8. As this is my first mac (I have ipads and iphones) I am unsure of what to do. Also to confuse matters I use a windows laptop as my sync machine for the phones and ipads (i do have a cloud account with backup) can I transfer both machines to my new imac? I will have a 1tb fusion drive + 2tb time capsule although I only have less than 400GB of data on both machines. Hope this is not too confusing for everyone but I am looking forward to sorting this mess out by just using the one machine.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Format menu button missing from MS Word for Mac

    Hi all,
This is driving me crazy! My Word for Mac 2004 works perfectly, usually love it, but for some reason, the format menu -which I use to customize my default bullet and numbering lists, paragraph spacing etc. -is missing from the top of the screen. I've got File, Insert, View, Edit, Font, Tools, Table, Window, Work, and Help, but no Format. Lately I've been getting by just using my formatting palette and formatting toolbar, but it's really not enough. Also, the toolbar button from the Insert button is also missing.
I feel like I'm going nuts! You know how you'll look everywhere for a pair of socks and then find it right in front of your nose? Please, someone embarrass me with an easy answer!

Since Office is not an Apple product, you'll probably want to use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups> rather than an Apple forum.
Be sure to search the forum first in case someone has already had a similar question answered

  • Using Windows Media for Mac OS X

When I try to download and open Windows Media for the Mac OS X, I get the message "There is no default application specified to open the document "Windows Media.stix" with a tab marked 'choose application' under that.
Naturally, I know what to do, or what application to choose....not. What application am I supposed o choose to open the download and how am I supposed to know that?
    thank you!

Thanks for the message and info.
Before I install Flip4Mac, I should probably uninstall the Windows Media Player for OS X first, correct? In my application folder, I have an icon marked "uninstallflash_playerosx.dmg". (I also have "installflash_player_9_ubbeta.dmg" in the applications folder as well.) Are these connected to the Windows Media installer, or are they something else? I don't know what they are or what they do.
Something is also definitely wrong with my chat functions--which relates to flash player, I think? In downloading interactive software or chat room functions from websites, I get the image of the recycled coffee cup---but that's it. Nothing starts, nothing works. I have 'enable java' 'enable javascript' and 'enable plug-ins' all checked under preferences in Safari.I have both java 1.4.2 and java 1.3.1 settings (with 1.4.2 as the default I guess, but am not positive).
Are the Windows Media and flash and chat functions related? Is there something else I should be doing to activate chat or interactive functions?
    Thanks again!

  • Uninstalling "locked" windows media for mac

i recently installed microsoft's windows media player for mac, and i should have known better. my computer is acting strange, getting stuck. i tried to put it all in the trash, but it says i can't because half a million files are locked. i have tried to get info on these files to unlock them, but can't find them, and the ones i do find are unlocked. obviously i am not terribly great with the computer, and i really want to get this microsoft junk off my computer. anybody know how with step by step instructions' page i can go to? thanks much

    Welcome to the discussions!
How exactly did you install Windows Media Player for Mac? Or, you mean Flip4Mac? If you installed the first, it should be in your Applications folder. You can trash it, run Spotlight, find all relevant files and delete them from there. You can also find the application shortcut, Ctrl-click and from the dropdown menu, choose "Get Info". In the pane that will arise, look for permissions, make sure it's "read and write"-just to verify you haven't inadvertedly change privileges. ( Same goes for all applications, it's not specific to something ).
But, are you sure about the cause of your trouble? Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair permissions as a first step and make sure your Software is updated from System Preferences > Software Update. Also ( if you have Flip4Mac ), look up it's window pane at System Preferences and look if this also needs updating.

  • New problems with Acrobat 11.03 for Mac

I'm having new problems with my Adobe Acrobat 11.03 for Mac.  These issues are relatively new and did not occur when I first bought the product about 9 months ago.
    1) When scanning documents from an HP scanner into Adobe on my Mac, the scanning works fine, but a multi-page document (scanned as one) is saved as a separate PDF for each page.  Bothersome to then have to combine all those separate files into one doc.  I can do it, just don't think I should have to take the time.
    2) Occasionally, when working in Adobe, the menu bar at the top will disappear when I click on the Adobe icon or a previously saved PDF.  Very frustrating.  Can't make a note or save the document without knowing the shortcuts, as the menu has disappeared.  Once I click somewhere outside Adobe, the menu bar reappears for the other programs.  This happens over and over.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
