Formatting series markers

Post Author: Sriram Venkataramani
CA Forum: Charts and Graphs
Hi,I have a crystal report with a stacked bar chart. For one of the series in the chart I want to shown only dash(-) markers instead of showing it as a riser. So what I did was to change the series to display it as a line and made the line transparent to just show the markers. Now, I am trying to set the series markers as a dash instead of the default rectangle. I don't see a way format the marker type in the "Format Series Marker". Also, when I change the marker formatting it automatically changes the line formatting and vice versa. How can I do this? Let me know if you need more information.- Sri

Hi did you find the solution to your problem?I'm having the same issue where my the chart wizard automatically generate a report with 4 series, but the query actually returns more series than that and it seems to somehow randomly assign format types to the undefined series. The data portion of my report is a cross-tab type. I'm running Crystal Reports XI using a XSD as the dataset. Thanks in advance.

  • How do I remove markers in a line-format series in a side-by-side bar graph

I have fairly simple report that is formatted as a side-by-side bar chart. I need one series to be formatted as a line, which I have done; however, the line always appears with markers at each data point. I want the markers gone. I've tried myriad combinations of settings and options, but nothing makes the evil marker go away.
The frustrating thing is that I have another Crystal report from a different project that behaves precisely this way, but duplicating the settings from that report in this new report does not turn off the markers..so, I know it must be possible, but darned if I've been able to figure out the magic words to make it happen. I even tried copying that report and changing the datasource to my own, but that removes the "good" report, and forces me to recreate the chart - and that puts me right back where I started, with markers on the series formatted as a line.
I figure there must be a way to format that series as a line and eliminate the markers.
    CR version 11.5.7.608
    Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

    Cyndi,
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Unfortunately, there is no option for Line Type in the Series Options dialog available when I select the line that has the unwanted markers. I agree entirely there should be, but there isn't. The only options I have are "Riser Shape" (which gives me three options), and "Show Selected Series As", which gives me only "Riser, Line, Area, Default for Chart Type." There are no other options on that dialog, and no additional options appear when I select "Line."
That's very much part of the frustration here; it seems the problem should be as readily resolved as you indicate. It makes me wonder if there is a bug in the particular version of CR I have installed. Others in my group have experienced this same problem as well.
Thanks again, but I hope someone else might share my pain

  • Symbols or pictures for series markers

I have a line chart and want to mark each series with a different picture or symbol.
( The report will be printing in black and white so color will not work well )
I don't see a way to do this. I tried to put a picture on the series marker but it looked like it completely ignored my picture.

    I have version 11.5r2
Yes i have all the latest packs.
If i can't use different pictures or symbols for each series, I think CR has a major issue. I would think at the least CR should be able to choose different symbols ( aka squares, circles, diamonds, etc.. ) for each series.
Either way it does not help me now.
I need to display this graph in black and white. I guess I could use some grayscale colors, but even that could be hard to discern on a printout.
What do you suggest? Or what colors show up the easiest on black and white printers?

  • Format a graph series riser as a picture.

I am attempting to format a series rise as a picture.  Selecting Format Series Rise, selecting Picture, selecting a Picture to use (in which the example window shows how it will look) then clicking ok.  This fails to set the riser to the picture.  The series is plotted as a split x-axis item but the main x-axis items can not be set to pictures either.  Any one else experience difficulty in doing this?  Thanks in advance.  Using XI R2.

Wow, there's no plug-in to shorten this process? As a iMovie user, I often create a montage of still frames at the end of projects. Having to go to File>Export>Using QuickTime Conversion, etc. is a lot slower process than in iMovie to create still frames. I tried using AppleScript and Automator to automate the process, but couldn't figure it out.

  • Keeping iTunes Desktop conflicts to a minimum – Series 1(Reposting # 2) Fir

Note: If you don’t take the time from your busy schedule to address these suggestions being provided in this and future upcoming series, then by all mean continue with what you were doing before and continue to experience the frustrations and problems. The series is not meant to be a cure-all for the problems you are having. But the information will go a long way to correcting and improving a lot of issues that you may be having with your system. Think About It !!!!!!!!!!
In reviewing this forum I see a lot of folks here are having difficulties with running iTunes on the desktop and using the features available within the program. As far as information is concerned relating to iTunes conflicts, “the possible basic root causes” that can contribute to the conflicts are lacking in the discussions. The conflict discussion that I am presenting here in this first series that have been discussed many times before in various forums boards elsewhere. But for some reason it dos not seem to be sticking well in people’s minds when dealing with computers at this point in time. Therefore, I thought this would be a good opportunity to start running a series of articles here to help those who are interested in cutting the problems down to a minimum and to try and help you understand why the conflicts are occurring. If you are like me you want to enjoy your music without having to go through a lot of hassle to reach that enjoyment. But if you want to correct the problem you are having I will need to guide you through a little bit of hassle to improve your performance. These articles will be primarily directed to the learning advanced users and to those who have a complete set of available Recovery and Applications/Drivers CD’s that was provided with your system. The following is critical. If your system just came with one instillation disk I strongly advise against using some of this information. IF YOU DO, proceed at your own risk especially if you have an OEM system. If you are NOT an advanced user you can still learn from this material.
My objective in this opening series as I stated in my opening remarks is to address the possible root causes that can and will interfere with programs and iTunes. Before I go any further let me provide a summary of my upcoming series objectives:
    1) Conflicts – Current series
    2) HDD Formatting – “Main key to reducing conflicts”
    3) Security
    4) iTunes Setup and Firewall configuration
All four of the above categories will play a vital role in reducing the conflicts. Now lets begin the series for those who are interested in learning.
1)Open Ports – WARNING!!!! OPEN PORTS ARE A SURE FIRE INVITATION TO PROBLEMS. Also, it is a “potential security hazard” to the local machine in question. Therefore I strongly suggest visiting one of the following links for a free online Port Scan. www.broadbandreports.com when you reach the site look for the Tools tab. www.sygate.com There are many other places you can visit but I would use caution because of the hidden dangers that could be involved if you don’t know a whole lot about the scan provider. I would stick to the most popular scan sites if possible. I suggest also going to www.microsoft.com and typing in the following search term: “Ports”. The search results will yield you a wide verity of information relating to port issues. Or, use your favorite search engine to research the issue. The bottom line is this, it is very important and relevant to understand the importance of protecting yourself in this area for it can and will at times have a system wide impact on the local machine. So now is a good time to start learning how to lock your system up to the outside world as much as you can if you have not already done so. Question? You would not leave your home without locking it up first, Right? Get my point? Throughout my series I will be revisiting this subject and discuss other aspects relating to ports issues.
2)Virus/Spyware Programs - Unfortunately we live in a world today where people have hidden motives and agendas. Others are just out to cause trouble for others. The reason that I am bringing up these two programs is because they are well known programs to cause conflicts. Even though both of these programs is a necessity in our every day tasks lets break each one down and briefly discuss what we can do to reduce the conflicts. Virus Programs: I know you may have heard it before but I am going to reiterate it again that it is imperative that you keep this program up to date. This will be just one part of your front line defense in protecting your computer. Virus Programs/Firewalls: The virus programs coming out today are multi-functional packages now. Example: Spyware programs included, etc. But lets focus our attention at the firewall level for just a minute. When I run my virus program I usually do the following, I will disengage the Spyware portion of the program. I will discuss a little bit more about Spyware programs soon. The point that I am trying to make is “Configuration”. In order to reduce the conflicts it is important that you understand the program that you are running. At times you may have to go back and configure your firewall in order for the program to properly work as well. Therefore, check with your program vender as well as your firewall vender to ensure that you are properly configured. And finally, Spyware programs. As I just stated, I usually disengage the Spyware portion when I setup my virus program. I do it for a specific reason(s). 1) I run my own independent program and, 2) I have found that the Spyware programs that are included in the multi-functional packages are just not effective. I am currently running Ad-Aware SE Plus. 3) Running two Spyware programs can and will cause conflicts.
3)Firewalls - Firewalls can be and often is a source of conflicts as I had briefly mentioned in the Virus program section. This will be another important aspect of your defense measures. You may ask, “What does this have to do with iTunes?” Well my friend it is important for configuration purposes again as I stated in the virus program section. When you listen to the radio or purchase music from the store you are dealing with what is called a live stream. To ensure the integrity of the live stream “Proper Firewall Configuration” is the key to maintaining that integrity. During my iTunes Setup and Firewall Configuration Series I will go into further details on this subject matter. If you are running the Windows Firewall and another firewall in one of the multi- functional packages that I spoke off, disengage it now. The probability of conflicts occurring will be high for sure.
4)Screen Savers and Tray Programs – Screen Savers is another well-known source of conflicts. If you are going to use a Screen Saver, then I suggest doing the following: 1) If you are going to spend a period of time at your PC, disengage the Screen Saver, and 2) If you are going to leave your PC running while you go to lunch or what ever, create a short cut from the Control Panel to the Desktop so that you can engage or disengage the Screen Saver at will. You will be better off in the end. Tray Programs If you are running iTunes products it is also a good ideal to shut down any programs that are not necessary to keep the conflicts to a minimum. Especially if you going to copy music to your iPod or iTunes player.
5)Internet Connection – In this last subject of this opening series I would like to briefly touch upon your actual Internet Connection. This can also be a source of conflict. If you are a Bell South user and have inside line filters on your phone lines as well as fax lines I suggest you consider getting rid of them. Then contact Bell South and have them come out to your home and install a line splitter on your line at the point of entry into your home. There is no charge for doing this. Fax Machines: If you have one and it is sharing your phone line I recommend considering putting it on a dedicated line, if you can afford it. Bellsouth will work with you in spreading out your payments on your phone bill. Once you have done this you will notice an immediate improvement in your connect.
In closing, everything that has been presented here for your consideration I have personally gone through. To date, as a result of my efforts I rarely have any problems. I am currently running the new update 7.0 When I do have a problem I can quickly pin point the problem and resolve the issue. Also, everything that has been presented here can cause a conflict by either direct or indirect means. Example of how a conflict can affect iTunes products: lets take the iPod for example, either one of the above can cause a conflict in such a way as to keep you from properly transferring your songs from the iTunes player to the iPod itself. This is why you don’t want to miss my next upcoming series.
In my HDD Formatting Series, I will show you how to properly lay out a hard drive in a way that will cut down the conflicts. Because of the amount of information that I will be providing, I may have to break it into two to three series on the subject. I can guarantee you though if you follow my suggestions in the series you will notice an improvement in your system. The principles of this information can be applied to all connections. Print these series off and save them as a reference points for yourself or others. I look forward to seeing you in my next series.

  • Decrease the size of a series marker on a bar chart

I am trying to decrease the size of a square series marker on a bar chart in crystal reports.
Usually this can be achieved through the 'appearance' tab in the 'chart options' menu.
However as I have changed one of the series(bar) on the graph into a line, this no longer seems possible.
Is there a way around this?
    Thanks

    Hi Natalie
In order to decrease the size of a square series marker after changing the series into line, you can use Format Series Marker -> Border -> Thickness.
    Hope this helps!

  • Cfchart: clips or crops my series marker at the top of the graph

I am plotting a line chart. (aka Frame chart)
My series markers are begin clipped or cropped when the value is the  maximum. I have data from 0.0 to 10.0.  When the value is 10, it does not show  the complete marker.  I really don't want to have to set the scale to  11.  (make no sense as the values can never be greater than 10.0 and  looks really bad)
Is there a setting in the xml style that I am missing or is there a setting on the server that will increase the plot area so this does not happen?  I am using both the built in markers and custom markers but it makes no difference.  Both get cut-off.
Example: Yellow arrows added for emphasis.  See how the markers are clipped/cropped.

    Kinda a what the ...
Although the chart is only a 2d flat line chart, change this to a 3d  chart with a Zero rotation.  Do this in the .xml style file either  created by hand or using "webcharts.bat" to launch the chart editor and  create the file.  Do both items below
Remove is3D="false" (or set to true i.e. is3D="true") as part of the "frameChart" tag.  This is usual the second line of the xml file.
and add xDepth="0" yDepth="0 to the "frame" tag.  This is frequently the third line of the file.
Note: no "is3d" and addition of "xDepth" and "yDepth".
    <frameChart autoAdjust="false" font="Arial-12-bold">
      <frame xDepth="0" yDepth="0" type="None" outline="black" leftAxisPlacement="Back" isHGridVisible="false" isHStripVisible="true" >

  • PowerPoint 2010 arrows in series lines was displayed reversely between the edit mode and the slide show

I encounter a strange problem with the column chart in PowerPoint 2010 (or maybe the combinations of Excel 2010 and PowerPoint 2010).  The directions of the arrows in Series Lines display in the reverse direction between the edit mode and the Slide
    Show.
Here are the steps to recreate this phenomenon:
Open a new Presentation > Insert > Chart > Column > Stacked Column > Press OK
Excel pops up.  Close Excel and return to PowerPoint.
Click on the chart > Layout > Lines > Select "Series Lines"
Right click on the lines and select "Format Series Lines"
Line Style > End Type > Choose "Stealth Arrow"
(well, could not paste an image yet... arrows display like <--)
When F5 was pressed (Slide Show)
(well, could not paste an image yet...  arrows display like -->)
If you look closely at the directions of the arrows, they are display in the reverse directions.  Anyone is having the same issue?
    Thanks!
    Chen

    Hi,
Based on my tested both of the PowerPoint 2010 and
PowerPoint 2013, I reproduced the issue in my environment.
If I choose the End Type> Stealth Arrow(---->), it showed "<-----" in "Normal mode", but showed the "---->" in  "Slide Show mode". It seems display correctly in "Slide Show mode".
We have definitely heard your frustration, and we're thinking about ways to make this scenario work better for our customers. Please wait for the issue is fixed. Thanks.

  • Line Chart - line

    Post Author: csminesvik

Is there any way to make the line in the Line Chart thicker?  I am using the 'Line chart with markers at data points' but the line is so thin it is barely visible when the report is printed out in color.

Change line style to line only first, right click the line, select "Format Connector Line" and format the line. Then go to "series options" to change the line style back to markers and lines and format the markers size.

  • A single report can't combine portrait and landscape oriented pages

    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
    Hi,
Can a single report in Crystal report XI (version 11.5.8.826) combine portriat and landscape oriented pages like Crystal report 2008?   For example, I have one main report with several subreports in the main report.  I want one subreport be in portrait page orientation and the other subreports in landscape.  Can I do something like that in Crystal report XI version?    I even tried writing a small .net program to do this, but it doesn't seem to allow me to do that programmatically either.  Please help

    Post Author: ngra
    CA Forum: Crystal Reports
I'd like to elevate this issue with Crystal Reports XI. There is a critical application which we developed in-house which needs both portrait and landscape orientation in each of the 30,000 plus documents we are sending out every month. If developers in Business Objects are picking this thread up - we need a patch for this limitation - quick. Right now, we are toying with the possibility of exporting the documents into a text format with markers indicating if a page is portrait or landscape. This is to be loaded into a Xerox machine (which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars), where it is mapped automatically to portrait or landscape. Note to Business Objects: This will provide us and countless others with much value. Think 80/20 rule - most bang for your development bucks and value for your customers!

  • Exception while drilling into data object values

    Hi everyone,
I get the following exception : String was not recognized as a valid DateTime, when drilling into data values. This occurs specifically when drilling into reports that have datetime series or groups on the non-data axis. More specifically, the error doesnt occur when I drill into the report to show all values. It occurs when I drill into the report to show values for a particular time period (say, all sales in the month of Jan) instead of drilling to show details of all sales.

Fixed!! The timezone on the BAM server was changed to GMT, and that somehow solved the problem. Seems like the GMT offset should be zero while executing a drill down query.

  • How do I change the value labels in a line graph without changing the data in the source table?

Where the graph values show 1  I want them to change to text (different each time). Is there a way to make this happen?
Also, is there a way to connect the series markers - circles - with solid lines even if there is no data in the table. E.g from 1.5 to 2.5 a solid line even if there is no data under 2.0?
Is there perhaps a better way altogether to achieve this graph?
    Thanks.

    HI Mick,
Sounds like something that could be achieved with no "graph" at all.
This is a combination of a table and an inserted shape (line). Enter the dates as the goals are achieved. Here's a second image of the same 'chart,' taken before the table grid was whited out:

  • How to change the color of bar in bar chart

    Hi I'm
using Crystal Reports 2005 with Visual Studio 2005. How do i change the color of the bar in a bar chart, i don't see any options, someone telling in the forum that i can simply right click on the bar and choose color, but i don't get that option. all i can select is the entire chart object.
    any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    yesvee

You have to make sure that you select the correct part of the bar.
For Example:   When you click on the outside of the chart, the entire chart will be selected. Clicking somewhere inside the chart will also highlight the entire chart, but to highlight a specific bar or line you have to click until only that part is highlighted.
Once you have the bar or series highlighted, right-click on the highlighted section and then select Chart Options, or "Format Series Riser" and you should be able to change the colour of the bar/line.

  • How to set colors on some condition in barchart

    Hi,
I want to design a crystal report with a barchart. I should specify the color of the bar based on some conditions, this colornames are maintained in the database. I tried using chart expert -> color highlights,
is there any other way to set the color of the bar?
    Regards,
    Deepa V

    Hi Deepa,
In charts Color Highlight is the only way to conditionally change the color of the riser bars.
You can use multiple conditions at a time in color highlight.
To change the color directly you can right click the bar and select the Format Series Riser and change the color (but not conditionally)
