Formatting Slideshow movie for YouTube

Hi,
How can I create a slideshow for Youtube? I have a group of photos that I want to use to make a movie, and the process works fine. I export the movie from FCP and then use QuickTime Pro to convert it to an .mp4 movie. It plays well, except that the photos appear distorted and of low quality when playing on Youtube, and there is a black band above and below the movie when it plays.
Any help appreciated....
Patrick

The black surround is because YouTube now accepts 16:9 HiDef video and yours is not in that format.
Ken Stone has a load of articles on prepping video for YouTube, here's one for HiDef:

make sure you have sufficient drive space on your target drive.  Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free space on your startup drive.  What format is the original quicktime movie?

if what you are seeking is simply adding the dvd presentation as a QT movie (no buttons or menus from iDvd) then look into DVDXDV > iMovie or iDVD.

  • FAQ: How do I export a movie for YouTube, Vimeo, iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV?

When you export your movie, choose H.264 as the format and then choose the appropriate YouTube, Vimeo, iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV encoding preset from the Preset menu.
See this video for instructions for using the new and improved encoding presets in Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5:
    Adobe Media Encoder Improvements

I figured out one way to do it.
    I don't know if it's the easiest.
    1. drag the movie from iPhoto into the iTunes movie folder.
    2. in iMovie- go to "file- New Event". Name it.
    3. go to "file- New Project". Name it.
    4. click the iTunes button on right"Show or Hide Music and Sound Effects browser"
5.Scroll down until you see the iTunes icon and expand the triangle if not already expanded to reveal the "Movies"    icon. Click on it.
    6. Find the movie in the list below and drag it to the new event.
    7. edit and/or drag it to the Project window.
Go to "Share- YouTube..." follow the prompts.
It will process the movie and let you post it to YouTube, and give you the option to share it.

  • IMovie is crashing after creating the large movie for YouTube.

    Hey Guys!
So, I have been uploading to YouTube from iMovie for several years now and today I uploaded again as I usually do. The problem was that about 30 seconds before the end of my video it went black on YouTube! I deleted it off YouTube and reuploaded but it happened again! So, thinking that it was something on YouTube's end I deleted it but the next time I tried to upload, iMovie gave me this error message: "The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (Not enough room in heap zone / )"
Now when I try to upload, iMovie crashes after creating the large movie to upload to YouTube!
I have restarted my computer, deleted items to create extra space on my disk, and ejected my iPhone so nothing else happens while I'm trying to create the large movie.
Does anyone have an idea of what is happening and how to fix it?
    Thank you!

I'm having a similar problem with Imovie 11.  I wonder if the problem is in the new Mountain Lion update.  Fortunatly, I cloned the drive befor installing the update.  I've cloned this drive back to the original startup drive and gotten back to IMovie.

  • Audio Issue - Using Logic Pro and iMovie to Create Movies for Youtube

I am trying to use a combination of Quicktime, iMovie and Logic Pro 9 to create videos of me playing/singing songs to post on Youtube.  Before I can ask the question, I think it would be best to briefly explain my process, so here's one example:
One thing I try to do is video myself playing piano and singing at the same time.  What I do is open up Logic Pro and load my piano sound and arm an audio track that my microphone is plugged in to; I also go to "System Preferences" and click on "Sound" and make sure that my audio interface is selected for the input method.  Then, I open up Quicktime and select "New Movie Recording".  Finally, I open up my software for my interface and set it up for "loopback"...there's a picture below.
If you look at the bottom of the interface, you'll see it says "DAW 1: Loop Back 1" and "DAW 2: Loop Back 2".  Ideally, this means that whenever I start recording in Quicktime, all of the sounds that I am making in Logic (the piano playing and the singing) will loop back into the computer and be recorded by Quicktime.  This does actually happen, but my question is this:
I've noticed that the sound quality of software instruments is drastically reduced once they have been recorded by Quicktime (or iMovie) and I play the movie back.  Actual audio files, like me singing or playing a real instrument aren't really affected, but for some reason the software instruments sound very thin once I listen to the audio in the movie.  Why is this happening?  Is there a way to preserve the audio quality to be the same during video playback as it is when I am playing the instruments live in Logic?

Interesting and convoluted way to get something done.. from what you're describing it almost sounds like the software instruments are somehow getting recorded twice but slightly out of phase.
When you record your singing are you monitoring through headphones or speakers?

  • Flash movie for YouTube

I'm working on a Flash animation piece that will purely live
on YouTube. I'm wondering what are the best Flash specifications I
should work with to get the best results. The assets I'm working
with are mostly illustrator illustrations and some Photoshop png's
and other elements created in Flash
    Currently I'm using:
    movie size = 640 x 480
    frame rate = 30
exporting = export > export movie> format, quicktime.
I'm not really happy with the results, animation doesn't seem
that smooth and the image quality seems diminished.
Does anyone recommend changes to the above settings or doing
    anything differently.
    All feedback appreciated!
    thanks.

Nope swf's don't work. To clarify the actual .mov is fine, it's just when uploaded to YouTube the quality massively diminishes. I guess their compression is pretty unforgiving. Any other tips?

  • Teh best settings to export movie for Youtube

Hi alls - I made some videos, about 6 minutes in length, lots of clips and cuts, that use a lot of effects. Right now they are in DV size, at 29 fps (I think..but I'm sure it's not less). I would like to post these to Youtube, and I have been experimenting with the export options, but I can't seem to get a satisfactory outcome.
When I export at 12 or 15 fps, you lose a lot of the small, quick cuts, and the resolution I chose was really pixelated. However, this option had the smallest file size.
I started trying to maybe export it as if I was going to send it to my ipod, but then I started seeing different options for sending it to web, and I just got overwhelmed.
SOOOO, the question is, if you have a really effects heavy video with lots of cuts, and you want it to look really sharp on Youtube, how would you export it and at what settings??

  • Exporting to .mov for Youtube = corrupted file.  Please help!

Hi guys. Here's my problem. I created a piece of stop motion animation using iStopmotion. The clip is just over a minute long. I imported it to iMovie so that I could add some sound and some fancy titles/credits. At this point, everything appears to be working fine.
I then export my finished movie as a Quicktime file so that I can post it on Youtube. If I play back the Quicktime file on my computer, it works perfectly. However, as soon as it's uploaded to Youtube, playback stops at a certain point even though the red time bar continues to the full length of the film. You can drag the little time slider past the point at which the film stops prematurely, but it shows nothing but black and snaps back to the premature cut-off point. I've tried exporting the movie as an mpeg4 file instead and the same thing happens.
I've even tried going back to the source iStopmotion file, editing it by altering the order of the frames near this problem point - yet when I upload to Youtube it stops playing at exactly the same point. I've tried altering every step of this movie's creating several times but it always freezes at roughly the same point when I'm viewing it on Youtube. I have also tried clearing my browser's cache, no success there either.
My friend suggested that the file had been corrupted somehow. Please can anyone shed some light on this, as I've spent hours trying to get it to work and am not starting to lose my sanity!

I've just solved my own problem. It's not an issue with iMovie as such, but I will post my solution here anyway in case anybody else experiences the same problem (and frustration) that I did.
My iMovie project featured a brief 2-second soundclip as the only soundtrack on the whole film. As soon as this audio clip finished, Youtube stopped playing the movie. I assume this is because Youtube assumed the clip had finished because the sound level had reduced to zero. To fix this, I copied, pasted and muted the audio clip using iMovie so that the rest of the film featured a muted audio track.
This has solved the problem and now Youtube plays my video in its entirety!

  • Breaking up a project into smaller units for YouTube

    Hi,
I used FCPX and Compressor to export a 55 minute FCPX movie for YouTube. The resulting 720p file, while looking fantastic, was 4.37 gigabytes and failed to upload to YouTube. Rather than compressing to a smaller, lower resolution movie, I think I'd rather break the movie up into four separate movies and upload those smaller files to YouTube. What I am asking is this: What's the easiest way to break up my project into separate movies, using either FCPX or Compressor?
    Thanks!

You can set IN and OUT points in the timeline to export just a section of the movie.
But since you already exported, there is an easier way. Open the exported movie in MPEG Streamclip, set an IN and an OUT point, and do Save As...; repeat with other IN and OUT. This is quick, since it does not recompress the movie.

  • Best Settings to Export HD Video Slideshow from iPhoto '09 for YouTube

Trying unsuccessfully thru trial & error to find the correct settings: in "Custom Export" I select "Movie to MPEG-4" as req'd for YouTube, then click "Options" and select MP4 (NOT the ISMA version) for File Format, then I select one of the two HD Image Sizes, then I'm completely lost with regards to Video Format, Data Rate, Frame Rate, etc. Any advice for creating the highest quality YouTube-compatible results?

  • Media encoder inserts black frame at beginning, when converting my MOV file to H264 for YouTube 720pHD

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder to convert my MOV file to H264, and selecting "YouTube 720pHD" (for Instagram) as I was instructed by someone at Adobe over the phone. But it inserts a black frame at the beginning or end. When I open the converted file on my desktop, the black frame is the first frame. After I upload to Instagram, the black frame is at the end. How can I get rid of the black frame?! Please help!

    Welcome to the furum, Forrest.
Hmmm. I don't recall hearing of that problem. There may not be many users who can offer a solution.
This workaround should work, however: Open the exported movie in QuickTime Player and remove the first frame. (I think it's only the first frame that is black, not the first second. Remove all the black, whatever it is.) Save the movie. That may cause QT Player to save it into a new movie. Use the modified movie for your Web site. QuickTime Pro is required — $30 from Apple.
Note that you've posted in the iMovie 6 forum, not the iMovie HD forum for iMovie 5. There are fewer current iMovie 5 users here. Most were iM5 users, however, so someone might remember this problem.

  • Creating a Simple Slideshow w music as a movie for a web page.

    Hi all,
I would like to create a simple slideshow with music saved as a mp4 movie for a web page. I'd like to use basic transitions like crossfades between the pictures and other fun stuff
    A few questions:
1 - Would I be better of  creating this in iPhoto or iMovie or Keynote?
2 - Any hints in getting started?
note: I guess I'll post this on iPhoto area also...

You are probably better off in iMovie. You will have a lot more control. With iPhoto, as far as I know, all slides would have to be the same length, and you would need to pick music from iPhoto. With iMovie, you can customize slide length, make them change on the beat, use your own music, etc.
I would use Keynote only if you want to include text and bullets where the photo is only part of the slide.
