Formatting SSD takes forever (stuck)

So, I put a new SSD in my MacBook Pro (13", early 2011). Worked fine, formatted it and launched the restore. The problem was (I found out a day later) the backup drive was connected by USB before start up. Turns out, it copies at USB 1.1 speeds if done so, so the restore would take 4 days! I canceled the restore and tried again. But this time the erasing seemed to be stuck. After about 4 hours I canceled the restore again, to try formatting manually. Also manually formatting, by both Disk Utility or Terminal, seems to be stuck. Even after 6 hours the process was still at 50%. Trying to create a Logical Volume on the SSD returned an error: "unable to unmount the Disk", but when using the 'diskutil unmountDisk' command it unmounted just fine! Also, the S.M.A.R.T.-status is verified and checking the disk doesn't return any error. What could be the problem?
The SSD is a Crucial M500 480GB and is installed in the normal hard drive bay.

No, I just use normal formatting. I tried both erase and partitioning. Neither worked. Also, creating a Logical Volume on just the current (corrupt) partition (disk0s2) seems to unmount the disk fine, but also gets stuck forever in formatting.

  • Question 1: new website takes forever to load.

I just published my first website. The first page is all words and yet it takes forever to load. Why is this?
    The site is: http://shortpoem.org/
Any suggestions on how to speed things up? Thank you.
(The credit page mentions Sandvov, however I removed those pages.)

It could be that the audio track is the biggest part of the file size. CD audio (AIFF format) is about 10MB's per minute and, if that's what you used, reducing the quality and adding compression could dramatically reduce the file size.
iTunes can open AIFF and convert it to AAC or MP3 formats. Use half the frequency (22050) and a bit rate of 96 to get it down in size.

  • Partitioning takes forever

The partitioning process takes forever to finish. What I mean is, it stays stuck partioning my HDD and the status bar never moves beyond a certain point. Sorry I havent been able to take a screenshot because I dont want to try again if by some off chance I can damage the drive without first consulting as to why this is happening.
I had partioned my drive a time in the past but had to delete it because of storage needs and didnt have the money to purchase a new drive.

160GB in chunks. And yet most errors are "some files cannot be removed, you need to restore to single HFS+"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystemfragmentation
So just 'nuke the drive and restore - SuperDuper.
    Then try again.
However, I like to keep a boot drive as 50% free for OS X.

  • Java Apps take forever to load

I wasn't sure where to ask this so i figured here.
I recently reformated and reinstalled Win2k on my system. Prior to the format I had no problem with Java, all apps started up in no time flat.
Now, just about any Java App (Netbeans and Azureus right now) take forever to start, upon executing the exe the program loads into memory and I can see the process there, but for about 2-3 minutes the programs will sit there and do nothing (no GUI loads). Like I said, I never had this problem before the format, and before the format my system was in worse condition than now.
I did some searching and I saw a post that sounded like the problem I had, the guy was having issues trying to get apps to start (they'd hang for him too) and I think they figured out that the problem was that IPv6 was blocked or sometihng and that java was waiting for the timeout before it tried ipv4. I don't know if this is my problem though (nor do I know how to check if it is). Any ideas on what might be causing the hang ups?
A few things. I run a virus scanner but have tried turning it off, the hang ups still occur.
I do not run a firewall so there shouldn't be anything blocking IPv6.
    As I said before I'm running Windows 2000 SP4 Update 1.
    Thanks

Well I still haven't figured it out but I did find out about the "Profiler" and ran that on azureus (and realized it was a big mistake) but did find out that the major hang up seems to be in the initial loading of stuff (I think, I could be wrong.)
The pacticular Class that had trouble starting was,
    [Loaded sun.nio.ch.PipeImpl$Initializer from C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0_07\jre\lib\rt.jar]
After that loaded the program went the rest of the way fine, the output from the profiler for the main start up was:
Flat profile of 63.24 secs (36 total ticks): Main Thread
    Interpreted + native Method
    22.2% 2 + 0 java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1
    11.1% 1 + 0 java.lang.Class.getDeclaredMethods0
    11.1% 1 + 0 org.gudy.azureus2.core3.util.AEMonitor.enter
    11.1% 0 + 1 java.lang.Throwable.fillInStackTrace
    55.6% 4 + 1 Total interpreted
    Compiled + native Method
    11.1% 1 + 0 org.gudy.azureus2.core3.util.SHA1.update
    11.1% 1 + 0 org.eclipse.swt.internal.image.PngHuffmanTable.getNextValue
    11.1% 1 + 0 sun.misc.Resource.getBytes
    33.3% 3 + 0 Total compiled
    Thread-local ticks:
    75.0% 27 Blocked (of total)
    11.1% 1 Compilation
I have no idea what it means but maybe it'll help. Since I'm thinking the problem might be something internal like in windows I may just attempt another format and install and see if doing the install differently fixes the issue (might be an update or who knows what).
I did notice the "Blocked" thing, is that refering to "blocking" calls? Or to something that wasn't allowed? Is that normal?
Also, I'd try running the profiler on Netbeans and see where the hang up is on that as well (if its the PipeImpl or what), but I don't see a way to manually start Netbeans with Java so i can add a -verbose and -Xprof.

  • Premiere takes forever to render an AE composition that renders in seconds inside AE. (CS6)

So, I have a Premiere project that's basically a lot of After Effects compositions put together. It's a presentation of an architecture project, so it's mostly perspectives and a few animated sequences. No effects applied in Premiere, just a few cross dissolves and some titles.
Each of the After Effects compositions in After Effect is quickly rendered (I'd say about 2 seconds per frame, if that). But  whenever I'm rendering them from Premiere (be it to export them or just "render effects in work area"), they take forever. Like, 30 seconds each frame. For a 6 minute film, that adds up to 3 entire days. That happens even when I set the work area in Premiere to a bit where there's nothing but the AE composition with no effects.
I could just pre-render them all in After Effects and they'll render much quicker in Premiere, but then I'll have to it once for every composition (about 30 in total), and then do it again whenever one of the compositions is changed. That doesn't make a lot of sense.
    A few details:
    - Rendering in Full HD 23,976fps
    - There are a few different types of compositions. All of them are giving me a hard time. Some of them are compositions from 5000px wide PSD files with 2 layers and a linear wipe. Other is are DSLR .MOVs that are warp-stabilized and then timewarped to add motion blur. A few are .EXR sequences composed with a few effects and backgrounds.
    - When I'm rendering them in Premiere, Task Manager shows 13% CPU being used (1 core) and 2,5gb RAM. When I'm rendering the exact same sequence in AE, it's usually about 28% CPU and 6gb RAM. "Render multiple frames simultaneously" is unchecked. There's 16gb RAM and 3gb reserved for other applications. Everything is, of course, 64bit.
    - I'm using a Windows 7 on a 128gb SSD (plus a 1tb 7200 rpm HDD as a scratch disk and another for footage). i7 2600k, 16gb RAM.
    So... any ideas?
    Thanks.
P.S.: Man, I think I just got it. You're the best!
I'd been banging my head against the wall for three days. I just realized every single sequence had a keyframe for time remapping where it was set for 100% speed the whole sequence, but went to 0% like 3 seconds after it ended. AND time remapping fx was unchecked (off). No idea why someone would put it there or why that would affect the rendering time of the whole sequence which is set for 100%... but apparently just toggling animation on that solved my problem. So here it is for if anyone else has the same problem.

Here's what Todd Kopriva said in another thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3813422#3813422
"When the headless version of After Effects is called upon to render frames to serve Premiere Pro for a dynamically linked composition, it's just a single process---not the multiple processes that can run when when you're using After Effects as the primary application. Other resources (e.g.,CPU threads, RAM space, hard disk bandwidth, memory bandwidth) also must be shared with Premiere Pro in the Dynamic Link scenario."
So I guess that's the whole answer. In any AE composition that's resource-heavy in terms of CPU, rendering through Premiere is way slower - especially on an i7, which has 8 logical cores. That means you're using a computer that's 8 times slower and it makes a lot of sense to pre-render in AE before, as troublesome as that might be when you have 20 or 30 AE comps in your PPro project.
The "speed" glitch I had helped a lot, but didn't really solve it.
There's a way around that. Not sure it affects anything quality-wise. You just open AE and do a full RAM preview of the sequence. Then go to PPro and "render effects in work area" for that specific part of the project. If you go ahead and do alter the original composition you're gonna now it because the preview in PPro will be gone. A bit troublesome, but better than manually duplicating and pre-rendering 30 comps and having side comps with the actual effects as backup.

  • Devices and Printers Menu takes forever to load

Devices and Printers Menu takes forever to load in WIndows 8.1.
For some reason the green bar goes all the way across the top of the screen before the devices and printers
menu will load. It then loads without an issue after waiting for almost two full minutes.
This is a core I7 Win 8.1 PC with 16GB of ram and an SSD so it screams otherwise.
I do have a lot of devices on my home network but my windows 7 PC which is on the same network loads the devices
and printers menu almost instantly. If it were a device hanging up you would think that the Windows 7 PC would also be affected but it isn't. I will say that Windows 8.1 does identify a whole lot more devices that fall into the category of "multimedia
devices" on the network than does windows 7.
I have tried accessing the menu from safe mode both with and without networking and it takes just as long
    to load.
I have noticed that most of the devices in Devices and Printers also show up in file explorer under network.
There is however no delay accessing that menu.
I don't really have a good feeling as to how to go about troubleshooting from here?

    Hi,
For the issue, it seems one of services related to device stopped.
I suggest you check the services to see if they start.

We can try testing if the method in Windows 7 can work on Windows 8.1 computer.
If it doesn't work, I suggest you remove all device to test it.
Meanwhile, let us try SFC tool to check the result.

  • Migration Assistant with ethernet take forever?

Transfert from an to an imac snow leopard take forever right now at less 18 hours and the progress bar is at the 1/3, is it normal?
    Via ethernet 10baseT a believe...
Is this a way to see if it's stuck ?
An what about bootcamp partition ?
    TIA
    C!

I just migrated my Powerbook G4 12 to my new Macbook Pro 13. I tried the migration about 10 times using various forms of network connection - both ethernet and wireless - and all of them failed at some point during the migration. When my firewire 800 - 400 cable arrived, I plugged it in to the two laptops and migrated without error.
There is a thread on here about the flakeyness of using migration assistant between Intel and PPC. If you are planning to migrate between these two processors, I recommend skipping the ethernet option and using Firewire instead.

  • HP 4015 takes forever to print

We have an HP 4015 for our Windows LAN system.   Currently it takes forever to print anything.   It sounds like it just keeps cycling.  No error messages or red lights go on.   It eventually prints but minutes go by before that happens.
We have checked all the electrical plugs and have found them all secure.
What could this be?  How can we fix this?

    Hi wldcat,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums. I see that when printing from your iPad to your P1102w printer that the printing can take a long time.
I know this document doesn’t mention the error that you are experiencing but the steps in the Apple Mobile Devices (AirPrint): Document Does Not Print or is Stuck in Print Queue trouble shooting document are valid for your situation. If they don’t help resolve the issue please try the steps in Apple’s Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset document.
If you are still having the same issue, then please follow the steps in the Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection document.
Please let me know how it goes.

  • SpotLight takes forever to index

I know there are a few questions with this title, but they are really about SpotLight taking forever to prepare the indexing. In my case, it takes forever to index. It starts, get a few pixels' worth of the progress bar done, and then stops forever. I've left my computer on for hours on end hoping SoptLight will eventually finish its job; it doesn't. (By the way, it also doesn't give me an estimated remaining time; I just get the progress bar.)
I'm running Mavericks (10.9.5) on a MacBook Pro from September 2014; my computer runs on a 2.2-GHz i7 processor and has 16 GB of RAM. I've got about 420 GB of data (recovered from a TimeMachine backup) split up as follows: about 200 GB is in the computer's 250-GB internal flash-memory "hard disk", and the rest of it is in an external SeaGate 2-TB drive.
For the sake of my battery (which is eaten up ridiculously quickly by SpotLight), I've turned indexing off with the terminal command sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist. However, I do want the indexing to get done so I can actually search my Mac for stuff. I've already run into one instance of the computer being unable to find a document which I know is there (I think it was in the SeaGate drive, but it was looking everywhere, not just in the internal disk); I don't want that to happen again. So how do I get the indexing to actually get done? (Oh, I have a STRONG preference for solutions which don't involve installing third-party software.)
I'd never had this problem before, and I've restored data from TimeMachine backups in the past.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for your reply, Linc Davis.
The first terminal command resulted in the following (not knowing whether they are privacy-related or not, I replaced the hex codes after MDSImporterProxy with Xs):
Oct  4 17:25:46 (Error) ImportServer: <MDSImporterProxy 0xXXXXXXXXXXXX shutdown:NO got shutdown notification:NO> still waiting for plug-in info from bundle finder
Oct  5 12:14:16 (Error) ImportServer: <MDSImporterProxy 0xXXXXXXXXXXXX shutdown:NO got shutdown notification:NO> still waiting for plug-in info from bundle finder
Oct  5 18:20:28 (Error) ImportServer: <MDSImporterProxy 0xXXXXXXXXXXXX shutdown:NO got shutdown notification:NO> still waiting for plug-in info from bundle finder
Oct  6 08:27:29 (Error) ImportServer: <MDSImporterProxy 0xXXXXXXXXXXXX shutdown:NO got shutdown notification:NO> still waiting for plug-in info from bundle finder
Oct  6 19:48:33 (Error) ImportServer: <MDSImporterProxy 0xXXXXXXXXXXXX shutdown:NO got shutdown notification:NO> still waiting for plug-in info from bundle finder
Oct  7 09:23:53 (Error) ImportServer: <MDSImporterProxy 0xXXXXXXXXXXXX shutdown:NO got shutdown notification:NO> still waiting for plug-in info from bundle finder
The second terminal command resulted in the following:
    Spotlight server is disabled.
I therefore reactivated SpotLight indexing (with the same command as in my original post, only replacing unload with load), after which I immediately reran the second terminal command. I got the following:
      Error: unexpected indexing state.  kMDConfigSearchLevelTransitioning
    /Volumes/SeaGate:
      Error: unexpected indexing state.  kMDConfigSearchLevelTransitioning
I then waited a few seconds so SpotLight would start "indexing" and ran the comman a third time, this time getting the following:
      Indexing enabled.
    /Volumes/SeaGate:
      Indexing enabled.
In the console, under "Diagnostic and usage information", there are three sections: "Diagnostic and usage messages", "User diagnostic reports" and "System diagnostic reports". I wasn't sure which of these I should look under, so I selected each of them and searched for "spotlight" (searching for either "mdworker" or ".crash" produced 4 or 5 results, all unrelated to SpotLight, and searching for "mds" returned no results). Only the first section, "Diagnostic and usage messages", had results. At first there was a single result, which I am quoting below (again, I replaced the UUID with Xs); after I turned SpotLight indexing off again (using the command on my original post), I got a second message which was identical to the one below but had no date and had the then-current time. (Note that 10.07 is the date in the format I specified in the system prefs and 11:31:47.238 is, I suppose, the time in Apple's preferred format.)

    Pine 12X DVD drive
    LG 24x10x48 CD Burner
    Antec 300W power supply
The problem is that it takes forever to install and boot windows with faster processors for some reason. I origianlly built this system with my old Athlon 1.33 and it had these problems.  I then tried a 900mhz athlon and it worked great, so I figured I damaged my 1.33 somehow.  I ordered a 2500+ and a zalmann cpu cooler and now am back to where I was, when the system starts it  seems very unstable and the screen goes blank for 10 minutes while its booting.  It shows about 3 seconds of the starting windows screen then the screen will go blank for a while anf there will be no hard drive activity then it will come back about 10 minutes later and then boot.  Sometimes the system will work fine then sometimes I cant even open my computer i just get the searching flashlight icon where my drives should be.  I have updated to the lastet BIOS.  Also while installing windows I get ocasional long pauses where it is doing nothing at all then it will just magically conitnue and do it in a fashion I would expect a machine of this speed to do.

Hmm not sure about the cable position on the CD drives, ill have to check that when I get home.  All the jumpers are set correcly, and the hard drive is all by itself and its on the right connector.  Thanks for the ideas, this problem is really killing me, I havent had these kind of hardware problems in years.  The thing I dont get is why it works good with the 900mhz and not with the 1.33 or 2500+

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-857D takes forever to erase 100MB file from CD-RW disc

My new MBP works phantastic. Only one thing is weird. The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D takes forever to erase contents on a CD-RW, about 5-10 times longer than my nearly 5 years old IBM Thinkpad T30.
    Is this normal and expected?
MacBook Pro 15'' 2.33 Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 160 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   IBM ThinkPad T30 XP Pro

It might take longer, it depends on the type of drive your Thinkpad had. Most notebooks, even older ones, have 8x DVD ROM drives, while due to the thin nature of the MBP it has a 6x DVD ROM drive, which means it does work slower.

fixed the "offline mode" problem by following the about:config directions

unfortunately, pages still take so long to load it basically renders Firefox useless.

My iPhone 4 takes 5 seconds, since you're using iPhone 4S I would imagine it should take no more 5 seconds.
Having said that, holding the Home and Sleep/Wake button until your iPhone restarts has shown to show improvements in overall performance (since it quits all applications). Users I know have also experiance better performance by updating to the latest version of iOS.
