Formatting used iPod to new computer

I just came into posession of my older brother's 2004 Dell laptop with Windows XP. I deleted his account and files, made my own, have added programs, etc. I have an iPod purchased in July of 2005 with 840 songs on it. I have the software installation disc and the necessary cables to connect and format an iPod to a computer.
My question is, if I install iTunes on the computer and put my iPod in to be formatted, will I lose data? I don't want to lose my music. Any help?

If your iPod is working currently then there is no need to format it to connect it to your computer. If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to an empty iTunes after reinstalling software. However if your iPod is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual.
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box: Managing Your Songs Manually

Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Use Ipod on New Computer w/out losing Library

I have an ipod nano that I had set up with my mac. My mac crashed (I lost the entire library) and I got a netbook and never installed itunes or plugged in my ipod for fear that it would delete all the songs on the ipod. I just ordered a new macbook and want to use my ipod (with the same library). Is there a way to use the new macbook and ipod without the songs being deleted from my ipod.

Using ipod on new computer

I recently bought an ipod for my boyfriend and we began using it on a friends computer before we bought one of our own. We have now bought that computer and I can not open the songs on our ipod. When I try to upload music onto the ipod it brings up a message "The ipod is linked to another itunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this ipod with those from the library?"
If I press 'yes' will all the music currently on my ipod be deleted and replaced with the couple of songs in the new itunes music library?
I hope there is an easy answer to this one.

That is the way the iTunes/iPod system is supposed to work. We suspect that it was developed to prevent illegal 'sharing' of copyrighted music across PCs and separate users.
If you are trying to 'upload' your friend's music that you do not own a copy of, consider purchasing the CDs. That way, there is no violation of US copyright laws.

Old Hard drive crashed, need to transfer music from iPod to new computer

Hello. My old hard drive crashed and I bought a new computer. Unfortunately I did not back up any files from my old computer and lost all files including iTunes music. All I have is the music from my iPod. I would like some help or if anyone knows anything about how to transfer the music from my iPod to my new computer. I guess my new computer is not the original authentic one in the itunes system and will not let me exchange music from my iPod to new computer. I would appreciate help if anyone has ideas. just recently got new computer, I have a 30g ipod,I'm trying to transfer songs from Ipod to new computer without erasing anything. Have about 1900 songs, half is from Itunes and the other half is from CD'S. Very fearful of erasing everything, someone help me out me.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc) try one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

Need help re-synching iPods with new computer and getting iTunes to recognize our iPods (it doesn't even recognize them when they're plugged in).
Hubby wiped my harddrive for me, so now I need to get everything back in proper places. I'm using windows XP and installed iTunes once again (I believe it's version 8). I also installed all of my iTunes songs. Now I need to know where to go from here. We have 3 iPods and I need to get them all synched once again. I know how to create different libraries for each of us, but I can't figure out how to get our songs back into our iTunes libraries. When I open iTunes and plug in an iPod, iTunes doesn't even show that an iPod is plugged in.
What do I do now to get each of our iPods synched with our own libraries?

Okay, now how do I synch all of our ipods with our individual libraries (I don't want all of my kids' songs and vice versa)? We each have hundreds of songs on our ipods that we don't want to lose.

I lost the hard drive in old computer. Having trouble transfering files directly from ipod to new computer. Ipod is configured for windows. Old computer was windows XP, new computer is Windows Vista. Get transfer, but it is gibberish of some sort. I don't know what generation ipod. It is a video ipod with wheel and 30GB. It does say version 1.3 for itunes and model MA446LL. Any help?

Save all the photos from your Droid into a folder on your computer.
Connect your device to your computer. On iTunes left Pane, select iPhone under 'Devices'; then on the right Pane, select PHOTO tab. Make sure Sync Photo box is checked, and "from" box selected the folder that has Droid's photos. Then click the SYNC or APPLY button on the lower right window.

The password is for your iTunes account. Not for your old iPod. Enter your Email and password will give you access to all the music you bought from iTunes. If you forget it then I dont know how to help you there guess your SOL.

Let's try a standalone Apple Application Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of the issue.

Does it install properly for you? If so, does iTunes launch properly now?
