  • How do I "un-write protect" USB flash drives?

I recently purchased a new computer that has Windows 8.  One of my many flash/thumb drives is now suddenly marked "write-protected" when I did nothing to make it so.  I found a solution listed for Windows 7.  I applied it to my
own computer, however it did not change the said drive from write-protected to un-write protected.  I simply want to move files to another storage device and re-format the write-protected drive for new files.  How do I un-write-protect my flash/thumb
drive in the Windows 8 operating system?

I ran in to the same problem but none of the instructions here helped. doing some more searching i found a different article that supplied the answer for my issue. wanted to share in case other were still having issues.
If the problem is persistent with the drive and you still can't copy files to it or format it after:-
1- You tried removing read-only permission from the drive properties
2- You tried formatting from Windows
3- You tried formatting from CMD using DISKPART
4- You tried editing the Registry solution (for WriteProtect word)
5- You tried the different free online tools like
HDD LL Format tool and HP Format Tool
Then your drive is corrupt and needs the internal chipset S/W to be flashed, i.e. repairing the USB software The
steps below will lead you to get a small program to run on your USB memory-stick which is specific to your MANUFACTURER (make) and PRODUCT (model). If you don't want to go through the headache of the manufacturer's technical support then
do it yourself as follows (which I source from here):-
    1- Get Chip
Genius portable application from here which
you will use to find the VID and PID of the USB stick chip.
2- Search for the tool to repair your USB stick S/W from FlashBoot
website . Search using your VID and PID from the previous step.
3- Search on Google for the name of the application you find in the "UTILS" column in the page from step 2 and the first link on Google Results
(usually) will take you back to the FlashBoot website to download the utility to get your USB drive repaired.
It worked for me for my Kingston Data Traveler flash drive. It didn't work with all the common options for fixing the USB drive having "write protected",
but the above solution I found after hours and hours of searching online and asking my computer-geeks colleagues.
    Hope this helps!

  • Write protected USB HD

    I have quite a problem.
My sister bought a new Macbook a few weeks ago. She has never used a mac before. Now she went off to ecuador (only phone no i-net).
Now she is experiencing the following problem.
When she attaches her USB harddrive to her macbook it is read only.
    How do i change this?
The USB drive has been formated in NTFS. If it is not possible to change the settings would a formatting help?
Mac Book Mac OS X (10.4.9) Harddrive
Mac Book   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   write protected

    Hi Nils.SH
NTFS is the Windows native file format and for Mac it is Read only.
You can use Disk Utility to reformat the USB drive to
MS-DOS (FAT 32) where both Mac and Windows can read and write to it or
HFS+ which is the Mac OS X native format. Windows cannot see this native Mac format at all, not even read.
Disk Utility can be found in Application/Utilities.

  • HP v165w 8GB formatting error - drive write protected - Windows can't format - HP tool can't format

    Hi,
I am having trouble understanding what happened with this drive. It worked fine for weeks and weeks and now all of a sudden Windows 7 asks me that it needs to fix something because the files are corrupted or whatever... it does that successfully and after a few days I get an error message saying Windows can't access the drive and it needs to format it.
    I did the following:
    - Used Disk management with no luck... tried to format, reassign drive letters and so on.
    - Used HP formatting tool - and this is where I get the message saying the drive is Write protected
    - Used HP formatting tool and Disk management in Safe mode thinking there might be some processes running that are interfering, no luck, same result for both.
    - Used AH320_Utility_LFormat with no luck... it can't even find the USB device.
One thing that catches my eye:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}
has the entry StorageVolumes - UpperFilters (tdrpman ; snapman ; timounter) - LowerFilters (fvevol; rdyboost)
Is it a registry issue? Like we see in CD/DVD drives when they go missing from my computer?
    Is it a MasterBootRecord virus?
    Is it a Windows corruption?
Please help! If you need additional info please ask!
    Thank you!

    Hi devinderdalal.

  • USB Flash Drive v210w 16 GB Write Protected

Hi! After one week of usage, my new USB Flash Drive v210w 16 GB appears as Write Protected.
Impossible to add a new file, delete an old file, even format the whole USB Flash Drive.
I tried various procedures described on forums, as My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePoliciesWriteProtect > Value Data set to 0 \devise\harddisk1\dr2
and normal formatting (Properties > Format) and low level formatting tools, as http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/HDD-Low-Level-Format-Tool-Download-37794.htmlhttp://www.apacer.com/en/support/downloads/Repair_v2.9.1.1.ziphttp://www.transcendusa.com/Products/online_recovery.aspHP USB disk storage format tool SP27608-2.1.8.exe but in vain.
What happened? How to resume using my USB Flash Drive normally? I'm running a mini 311c on XP SP3.
Thank you for your help and best regards.

Hi! I contacted hp support and got as an answer the name of a recovery utility Ufix.rar.  Unfortunately, this utility doesn't recognize the v210w. hp-branded flash USB cards are manufactured by PNY.So I went to the PNY website and dug a little. Actually, the latest release is Ufix2v3. Ufix-II (USB Flash Driver Format Tool)
Applicable for PNY/HP 4GB/8GB/16GB/32GB flash drive products
(This software is not applied to A.V.S. Attaché,
    but applicable for AVS-II)
    2.98MB
Download http://www.pny.com.tw/pny_en/download.asphttp://www.pny.com.tw/pny_ch/upload/20101028122023052.rar It worked and restored my USB card. Windows and Mac OS format utilities seem not to handle correctly the USB flash card correctly.Mac OS says there's a 16 GB drive mounted on an USB support. I can unmount the volume without eject the USB connection. hp: Please mention this solution on the FAQ! Best regards,

    Hello aravindhenry,
You HP Pendrive is write protected. Im not sure what all the possibilities are that you have tried but there is a utility that corrects this issue if you have not tried it already.
    Go to
    http://www.pny.com.tw/index.php?cls=2&mode=download
You will download USB Flash Driver Format Tool (Ufix-II).
You may need to have 7-Zip installed to extract the .rar file. It is a free download. http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
Your going to extract "RecoverTool_V2.00.42_M1223 8CE.exe" from the downloaded file and run it.
BTW this is a volunteer forum so HP Support does not directly respond to questions posted here.

  • How can i remove write protection from a Hard drive

Cant write to HDD on win7 keeps saying "the disk is write protected"  Drive is in a removable IDE caddy, I put the drive in a USB caddy and was able to format the drive, but still get the same error when i try to write to it, I took ownership of the drive and it shows me as the owner. The drive was used in XP previously but i no longer have an XP system since upgrading to Win7. I have removed the partition with Paragon drive copy and re partitioned the drive, renamed the drive but still gives the same error.

I used succesfully diskpart (on my Windows 7).
In "Command prompt" (Start -> Run -> cmd) type "diskpart" and press enter.
(I wrote "cmd" and then on right click menu I clicked on "Run as administrator").
In diskpart utility (in the same dos window) you have to type "list volume".
You can see your disk (I see all my 4 partitions on the disk that give me the problem) with a progressive number index.
Type "select volume #" and press enter, "#" is the number corresponding to your disk/partition.
    Wait the response.
Then type "attributes disk clear readonly" and wait (I wait 2/3 minutes) for the result.
It says that operation was completed, and I can write on my partitions (and run checking/scanning on it).
    Hi,
The hard drive I had problems with had 3 partitions and at least one was write-protected. Just to make sure I used the above "diskpart" commands on each volume and it cleared the write-protected attributes and was able to format the 10Gb partition I used
just for storing the Pagefile.sys file.
The write-protect attribute on this WD AV 1Tb h/drive may have been added as it was previously used in my Foxtel IQ box. I used Ghost 11.5.1 to clone my failing WD 1Tb h/drive that had 1376 delays and 50 bad sectors when scanned with HDD Regenerator
onto the previously used Foxtel IQ h/drive.
    Cheerz ;)
Thanks again, I was pulling my hair out to find a solution.

  • DVD drive "write protected"

When I insert a DVD-R into my external usb-connected Lenovo DVD Drive (USB 2.0 CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo II Drive) and I try to format it to prepare it for backing up data, I get "Disk is write protected."  What's going on?

you got the combo drive, and not a dvd burner, it can only burn cd and not dvd....

  • How to switch off 'write protected' ?

I have set up firewire external drive, that has both USB 1.1 and firewire 400 connectivity. I was able to format the external drive and write to it, very slowly, via USB, but it wont let me write to it; in system profiler it says it is write protected. How do I switch off write protection ?

    Hi GoneToLunch;
Your stated problem does not make much sense. If you were able to write to the drive via USB then is not write protected.
If you are not able to write to the drive via Firewire that is a different problem then write protection. It means either you have a problem with Firewire in your Mac or more likely there is a problem with bridge in the external enclosure that is not allowing Firewire to work properly.
