Former PC Movie Maker User with iMovie importing questions

I hope someone will be willing to help. I've combed through several different forums trying to get the best advice possible before beginning a major project, and need to make a decision soon. I apologize for the lengthy post too...
My goal is to produce the best quality iMovies possible from .wmv and .avi files so they can be burned to DVD, shared with family, and most importantly viewed on a large screen TV with as little loss of picture quality as possible.
I have 60+ hours of video downloaded on my PC from a Sony 8mm HandyCam. Some of the original files were analog and some digital. Not having much experience with video files, or actually anything video, (in other words, not knowing better) I used Windows Movie Maker to capture the video from my HandyCam. As time went on, I found another capture program that would convert the files and download them in .avi, a format I liked better. So, I have .wmv, .avi, and some .mpg video files I'm trying to import into a iMovie.
Anyway, I understand to get these files into iMovie '09, they have to be converted to a accepted format. On my PC, I used Roxio Creator 2009 Copy and Convert DVD-Video (complete, purchased version) to convert the .wmv to .mpeg-4 (it took hours and hours and hours to convert 120 minutes of .wmv files)...I copied the .mpeg-4 file to a SanDisk 8gb flashdrive and then imported it into iMovie '09. I thought I had succeeded...Only to find that the video quality is not good at all. I watched both sets of videos (the .mpeg-4 and the .wmv) side by side on my MAC and PC and find the PC video is MUCH clearer. While I like the color enhancements in the MAC version, I prefer the clearer picture on the PC. I thought maybe the completed iMovie would look better than just viewing the .mpeg-4 file, but it didn't...
Because I wasn't happy with the .mpeg-4 generated by Roxio, I tried converting the .wmv file to .mpeg-4 with Movavi Video Converter 7. I prefer the Movavi conversion better as the video looks sharper. But, the quality is STILL not good when I go into viewing the video full screen. The .mpeg-4 files are soooo much smaller than the .wmv files---does that account for the quality loss in a higher resolution? Is there a way around this?
When all else failed, I tried to convert the .wmv to HD, but you can't really expect to get good apples out when you put rotten apples in, right? My failure could also be due to my ignorance...
Now, I know I have the choice of making my movies on the PC, but I purchased my brand new MAC because of iMovie and iPhoto and REALLY would like to transfer ALL my videos from my PC to my MAC.
Before I start this project, which will take weeks, does anyone have advice? I've read about the Flip4Mac convertor but saw where it is not yet iMovie '09 compatible. I have also read that many of you recommend MPEG Streamclip for Mac from Squared 5...
In your experience, can I expect the quality of the conversion with either Streamclip or Flip4Mac to be improved over what I've all ready seen with the Roxio Creator 2009 or Movavi Convertor? I'm willing to put up with SOME reduction in video quality...(actually, one of the many reasons I left PC's Movie Maker was that the quality of the production was not that great...the quality of the .avi video viewed in VLC was much better than the final Movie Maker product). But, before I start, I want to make sure I'm using the best possible converter/procedure/technique I can because these video files cover a lot of years and are very important to me. I'm sure all of you know what I mean.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you care to provide. *I just can't figure out why iMovie would require mpeg-4 files? I think that's what I converted all my videos to so I could download them on my iPod, isn't it? The iPod vids look fantastic, but that screen is really small and my TV is really big, and I want to watch the videos of my kids growing up on my TV, not my iPod. (Sorry for the rant.)

How do you copy the entire folder structure? I normally go to my computer (on a PC, my mac's not arrived yet) and the camera appears as a drive. If I open this up I find a folder with all my images/movie clips in. I just lterally drag and drop these files from the camera 'drive' onto my hard drive. Obviously I'm just dragging a whole heap of individual files though, not an entire folder structure.
I do still find it strange though that my old PC running old software can do this simple task ot reading/using mts, yet a brand new all singing all dancing mac with new software can't. Why is it that PC doesn't need these metadata files and the Mac does? Or I should really ask, why doesn't the Mac have the capability of reading/using files without this data when an old PC can?

  • How can I open a Movie Maker video on iMovie?

I'm trying to transfer a movie maker to the imovie? is it possible? how? thanks(:

The 2 options for saving a video file from Movie Maker are either DV-AVI or WMV. To create a Mac-compatible video file, open the MSWMM file in Windows Movie Maker, save the movie at the highest quality setting WMV or preferably as a DV-AVI format file. Import this finished AVI or WMV file into iMovie or other Mac video editing application.
After the MSWMM file saving as AVI or WMV file in our PC, you can play the WMV/AVI files on your PC and convert them to another video format or burn to DV

  • .mov movie made with iMovie imported in iTunes

I made (with iMovie) a movie and imported in iTunes where it works perfectly. But when I go to advanced to use "convert selection for ipod" I can't. I have only the line convert to mp3.....
Any help? Maybe iTunes doesn't convert .mov files for iPod use?
    THANKS

probably yes, but I'm not able to open the .mov file in imovies. I made it when I had imovies 04 than after upgrading to imovies 06, all the files look like quicktime files and I can't open it in imovies 06.... So, now I have only the .mov file. It works in quicktime and iTunes but not anymore in iMovie. Any idea?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Certain Movies not compatible with iMovie.

I've tried everything with iMovie, and there's nothing wrong with that-in fact, it seems to be a problem with certain movies. And there doesn't seem to be any pattern.
I can use a movie that I've taken from the beginning of a roll, and not use one near the end, however, all of my movies in my iPhoto library can be seen in quicktime.
I can import some movies into iMovie, just not all of them.
I'm rebuilding my thumbnail cache right now. Doesn't seem to be working.

    MilaUno:
Maybe you should post your question in the iMovie forum where you're more likely to get a potential solution.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Keynote export and issues with iMovie import

I told my PC workers I could do a movie for my job in 1 day. They said no way. And I could easily have done that BUT my MAC is FUBAR on file import from keynote to imovie...
I have Keynote 08, imovie 08 and QT 7.6.4 and did a simple slide show in Keynote. I tried to export to mp4, H264, and jpeg into imovie and strangely enough....it occasionally works. Many times I cannot select the files to import because they are grayed out. I have tried many things and again it sometimes lets me import. However, after import I get the clips in the event, and they seem fine. But when I drag them into the project they do not play..they just show a frame or they default to the last clip of video and then skip (in the proper time) to the next video. It is like they are there but the video cannot be resolved. The keynote is just text with build in and out effects and simple transitions.
If I go to Jpeg 2000 or DV (notDVCPAL) they imported OK but were very jagged and severe loss of font quality.
I do not expect this in MAC products. I cannot understand why keynote has a menu setup to export to everything but iMovie....
    HELP!

To be clear, the imported video seems to run in the event area. I drag it into the project and it LOOKS like it is OK. And if I drag the cursor over the play area it all appears OK. However, if I hit "play" by itself, as the movie plays it goes fine until it hits the imported keynote section, and here you see the very first frame..and that frame only or nothing....until the next raw video clip (which plays fine).

  • ~9GB Footage = 42GB with iMovie import..

I recently bought a Canon Vixia HF S20 camcorder which has a built in memory of 32GB. I took some footage on the camcoder for approx 41 minutes. In the quality of movie I am recording the 32GB gives me 2hours and 55 minutes of recording time on the camcorder. That would approximately take 9GB of space on the built in memory. I imported this into iMovie and the import files are 42GB. Why is it getting this high? Is it not a 1:1 ratio when storing it in iMovie? Am I missing something? Any pointers appreciated.
What is the best way to backup the video file from the camera instead of bloating up like this?

    Hi
Your camera shoots and stores video in a highly compressed format that is excellent for shooting and storing, but is very, very difficult to edit.
To get around this problem, iMovie transcodes the camera files into a format that is edit friendly, Apple Intermediate Codec or AIC.
These files are much larger as the transcoding process essentially unpacks the video from the native format in which the frames are woven and chained together in as tightly woven package as possible and transcodes it, frame by frame into individual packages so that each frames is accessible and the points between each frame are easily found and accessible so that editing can be done.
These "unpacked" files are what iMovie will use to edit the your movie. There is little or no quality loss in the transcoding process as it largely a repackaging process and not a conversion one.
The best way to save your original files, in their native compression format is to use the ARCHIVE feature of iMovie '09.
To read all about this feature and to understand the workflow (which is quite simple) in iMovie go to the menu Help and select iMovie Help.
When the window opens, search for "Making a backup copy of the contents of your camcorder".
    Hope this helps.

  • Here is a movie i made with imovie

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx3cbP8yPP0 Hope you like, please tell me your comments good and bad. Hope its ok to post this here.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Another problems with Audio importing question

Ok, I've read through lots of the other questions but haven't found my answer. I have a Sony camera that I'm importing some video from. I've done this often with recorded video into iMovie with no problems.
I just downloaded a show from my DVR to my camera. No problems, audio is fine. I'm not importing this show to iMovie. When I import, the audio is fine both coming out of my camera, and in iMovie. But once the import is finished, the audio is really really quiet. If I crank the volume all the way up, it is audible, but barely.
I've checked the 3 audio checkboxes, turned all the volume sliders up, made sure in my preferences audio filtering and 'play video to camera' are turned. But still no luck.
Any thoughts? I'm a MAC newbie so go easy on me. Thanks!

    667 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Thanks for the replies so far. My camera is set to 16 bit audio. I'm not sure if the DVR has an audio output setting but I will check.
But I don't feel like this will be the problem, only because when I'm importing the movie into iMovie, it plays at normal volume, through both left and right speakers. Its only when I am done importing the movie, and try and replay the clip I've just imported where I lose 95% of the sound and its barely audible. I feel like something is happening within iMovie. That make sense?
As I said though, I'm far from knowledgable about this stuff.
    Thanks!

  • ILife '08 iMovie import question

About 2 years ago I got a Sony DCR-SR45 digital hybrid camcorder. At the time, I was using iLife '06 and iMovie would not import the video files from the camcorder. I periodically copied the video files from the camcorder to a folder on my G5 iMac 2.1 gHz via USB and then deleted the files from the camcorder to make room for more video. Now I have iLife '08, and I have discovered that all the video I recently took on vacation, whether on the camcorder HDD or the camcorder Memory Stick, is recognized and downloadable via iMovie, and I have successfully imported all of it into iMovie. However, iMovie will not accept the video files that are saved to a folder on my iMac. I tried clearing the HDD on the camcorder, transferring the video files from the iMac back to the camcorder, but iMovie will still not accept them. The file names show up, but they are greyed out and not selectable for import. I even tried importing these video files into iPhoto first, but after spending a lot of time importing, each file was listed as not imported due to incompatible file format. Any ideas about what I can do? Oh, also, MPEG Streamclip says I need Apple Quicktime MPEG playback component in order to deal with the files, and VLC will play the video clips in the iMac folder.

    Bump.

  • IMovie import question

I recently uploaded a DVD disc with several mpg files to my MacBook Pro but am unable to import these mpg files to iMovie. Any ideas?

I recently uploaded a DVD disc with several mpg files to my MacBook Pro but am unable to import these mpg files to iMovie. Any ideas?
QT applications like iMovie '08 cannot edit multiplexed compression formats such as Flash, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, etc. Further, if it cannot edit a file, it will normally refuse to import it at the Finder level. In order to import and edit such files, you have two basic options...
The first is to convert the files manually to a compression format that iMovie '08 can edit. These include DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, as well as, supported MPEG-4 and H.264 profiles along with a number of common audio compression formats. Applications like MPEG Streamclip (free), iSquint/PunyVid (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), VisualHub/FilmRedux (pay-ware/open source), MPEG2 Works (pay-ware), etc. can do this. All will convert MPG (MPEG-1) files as they are downloaded but some (like MPEG Streamclip and MPEG2 Works) require the $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component to also be installed.
The other option would be to "image" your MPEG-2 DVD disc to your hard drive using an application like the Apple Disk Utility or VisualHub. When done properly, such image files are recognized by by iMovie '08 as a DVD camcorder which can then access the iMovie '08 "Import from Camera..." routine with will automatically convert multiplexed MPEG2/AAC files to all I-Frame MPEG-2 video and AIFF audio which can be imported/edited by iMovie '08.

    Hi guys,
i am new to this forum & to Flash.
I make basic promo videos for some of my clients & a couple need the file in swf format.
Currently I am using iMovie (for basic image to image cross disolves). I am learning Premier Pro

iMovie exports in .mov format. What is the best way of converting to swf? Would it be media encoder

    I am using Mac OS 10.5.6 & I have CS4
    any insight would be appreciated
