Forms 4.5 & Oracle 8i

Hi,
We are using Forms 4.5 & Oracle 7.3.3. Forms are in Character mode (MOTIF not GUI). Is it possible to use the forms as it is without any conversion?. We have seperate homes for FORMS & Database.
Thanks & regards
null

I use Forms 4.5.7.1.7 & Oracle 8.1.7, When I Modify
"Record Groups", I Get a Message
| |

Record Group Type : Query
Record Group Query: Select MyPackage.STR From dual
I Change Query to "Select SUBSTR(MyPackage.STR,1,1000) From dual"
Forms 4.5 can recreate the record group...
I Change Query to "Select SUBSTR(MyPackage.STR,1,1001) From dual"
Forms 4.5 Show Error!
On Oracle 7.3.4 Return Datatype From Functions(Package)
is varchar2(2000), but Oracle 8.1.7 is Varchar2(4000)!
I must change all of my Record Group?
The return value can be a varchar2(2000)?

• Forms 5 on Oracle 9i migrated from 8i: some experiences ?

Hello,
I would like to hear some experiences from some Forms gurus here,
concerning to Forms 5/6i (C/S) on Oracle 8i when migrating to Oracle 9i.
I know, Forms 5 has been looong desupported, but this is the situation I have to deal with and to which I am restricted now:
Infrastructure:
1 AIX5 server as production database server for OEE 8.1.7.3 (1 instance),
1 AIX5 server as test database server for OEE 9.2.0.6. (1 instance, data are from prod server),
Internal Company Network connecting 20 shops in the near local area,
Client/Server Forms 5.0.6.18.1 / Reports 3.0.5.15.0 used for company applications, that is, about 150 Forms and 300 Reports.
No plans at all to migrate to iAS for some reasons beyond this topic, they will keep C/S with Forms 6i. The Upgrade to Forms 6i will be made after DB migration.
They have 200 users, all only company members, no access from outside.
Known problems so far:
* Implicit datatype conversion between NUMBER and VARCHAR2 is handled more restrictive in 9i DB, there are some
hints in the papers. So I dagged through all stored prcedures and made the necessary changes (TO_NUMBER ...).
* Problems with CHAR returning stored procedured, or CHAR parameter taking procedures when
connecting with Forms 5. I had NO hints in this case ... OK, replacing CHAR with VARCHAR2 does the job,
but that was a pritty surprise ...
* All Form Modules have to be recompiled for 9i DB, and then those modules cannot be run against the
old 8i DB (because of different time stamps of the packages).
Remaining questions:
1) Just for my own curiousness, I would like to know
why CHAR is becoming a problem when recompiling a Form 5
for Oracle 9i; the problem is likely to be valid for more actual version, too.
I mean AFAIK, Oracle has not deprecated CHAR as a datatype ?
2) Concerning Forms 5 for Oracle 8i / 9i,
are there some more hidden "riffs in the shallow water"
to be aware of besides implicit conversion and CHAR difficulties ?
Thank You in advance,
Jan Gelbrich

ThanX to many people viewing this thread. Many may already know,
many may not, and I did not know also:
Metalink confirmed that Forms 5 is not certified on Oracle 9i,
and trying this is doomed
to see many ORA-03114 / ORA-03113 errors. No way.
I recompiled the same modules with Forms 6i without any changes
and it worked.
HTH others, too.

One for the database server.
One for the Application Server.
The Application Server is basically used for hosting your forms and reports, so you dont have to place the forms and reports on the developer PC or at any other server.

Nagpal,
This forum is dedicated to Non-Enterprise Business Suite (EBS) forms development. I suggest you post your question in the General EBS Discussion forum. Developing Forms for the EBS is very different fr0m non-EBS forms because of the EBS Framework.
Probably the biggest mistake developers make when writeing EBS Forms is to create a form fr0m scratch rather than use the EBS TEMPLATE.fmb. The second biggest mistake is to not attach all of the necessary libraries. I suggest you take a look at the Oracle Applications Documentation library. Select your EBS version and then scroll to the Standards section and review the following documents:

Oracle Applications Developer's Guide

Oracle Applications User Interface Standards for Forms-Based Products

Oracle Application Framework Personalization Guide

Hope this helps,

Hi all,
I have downloaded and installed oracle forms 10g and oracle database 10g express, when I open net configuration assistant to test local net service, I tested the default service (EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA) BUT THE RESULT IS "ora-28547 connection to server failed probable oracle net admin error"
How can I solve this issue?
My tnsname.ora is located in c:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\tnsnames.ora, and its contents is:
# tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: c:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =

(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = PLSExtProc)

I copied the contents of C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora and appended it to C:\DevSuiteHome\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
and tried net configuration management to test local net service, the test was ok, thus the first problem resolved.
but the login problem in forms developer still exist and it claims that: ora-12154 tns could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
any ideas?

• Oracle 6i forms issue with Oracle 9i Database

Hi Friends,
I am having Oracle Forms Developer installed with patchset18.The Version is 6.0.8.27.0
When i connect the forms builder to 9i Database (9.2.0.1) the form builder is getting crashed but i am able to connect the forms builder to e-business suite database(9.2.0.6)
I tried installing 9i Database(9.2.0.1) on windows 2003 server,windows xp,windows 2000.
When i connect my forms builder to any of these databases the forms builder is crashing with don't send message error on (ifbld60.exe).
Is there any compatibility issue between forms builder(6i) and oracle 9i(9.2.0.1).Please suggest me.
Regards,
Arun .N

Forms 6i connects to Oracle 9 databases just fine, even though it is no longer certified by Oracle.
First of all, can you connect to the database with SQL Plus? Make sure that works first.
The other thing that comes to mind is the AL32UTF8 character set. Forms 6i and other older Oracle software cannot connect to databases using it. But I have only seen that problem with Oracle 10g databases, so I am not sure about the Oracle 9 db.
Here is a thread discussing the problem: Re: connecting form 6i to oracle database 10G express edition

• Form Builder for Oracle 9i

Hey greetings all
i am using oracle 9i and now wish to make interfaces for my database project using any form builder. The first option was to use form builder for oracle 9i but i have heard that its tought to learn and heavy on system. now 2nd option in my mind is to use oracle developer 6i. can anybody suggest what shall i use? my project is not very complex or bigger. i just need simple interfaces for it. plz give suggestions. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi ,
It depends on the type of application you want to have....an application on web environement automatically or an application in client-server environment which ,of course , can be run in Web but Oracle Application Server is needed with some configuration steps...
Also , the Oracle Form Builder 6i is the last version of Forms which the produced runtime file (.fmx) runs on non-Web environment...and some time in the future Oracle will stop to support it....!!!!!
its tought to learn and heavy on systemIt has some wizards... which can help you very much in your productivity and of course in the learning of this tool.....
It is not considered much more heavy to the system....
NOTE: Just another thought...If the application is very simple and needs to be accessible form just a few people in a room , then Oracle Forms 6i may be sufficient ...!!!!
Regards,
Simon
