Forms 6.0/Oracle 8i Personal

I have Forms 6.0 installed from Developer 6.0 CD on a Windows 98 desktop. I recently installed Oracle 8i Personal Edition. I had to install 8i in a new Oracle Home because the UOI is not compatible with the installer used for Developer 6.0. I am now trying to connect to the Personal Oracle 8i database from the Forms Builder 6.0 . Is this possible? I have tried editing the tnsnames.ora file in the oracle home where the Forms 6.0 lives, but haven't had any luck.

It is easier to use developer 6i. 8i and 6i can find each other without having to change anything in the listeners or tns.names.
Greetings Huub Bos

  • Cannot connect Oracle Form to my Oracle 10g Database

    Hi Guru,
    Could you guys help me out on below? I have been running Oracle 10g personal XE edition and Sql Developer on Windows XP. I am able to connect using TNS as connect type when I am connecting from my SQL Developer to my database.
    Today, I installed Oracle Forms, Form builders. I choose connect and provide these info
    username: my username
    password: my password
    Database: XE
    I received ORA- 12154 TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
    Anyone I doing something wrong?

    Hi,
    What is your forms version (The location of tnsnames.ora is different for 11g).?
    As Baig mentioned, you first need to create an alias in the tnsnames.ora file, like
    mydb =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = <your_host_name_where_db_is_installed>)(PORT = <port_default_is_1521>))
        (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = <SID_In_your_case_i_suppose_it_is_XE>))
      )Then, from forms you connect like
    username: my username
    password: my password
    Database: mydb <== This is the alias you've created in your tnsnames.ora as above

  • Forms 5 on Oracle 9i migrated from 8i: some experiences ?

    Hello,
    I would like to hear some experiences from some Forms gurus here,
    concerning to Forms 5/6i (C/S) on Oracle 8i when migrating to Oracle 9i.
    I know, Forms 5 has been looong desupported, but this is the situation I have to deal with and to which I am restricted now:
    Infrastructure:
    1 AIX5 server as production database server for OEE 8.1.7.3 (1 instance),
    1 AIX5 server as test database server for OEE 9.2.0.6. (1 instance, data are from prod server),
    Internal Company Network connecting 20 shops in the near local area,
    Client/Server Forms 5.0.6.18.1 / Reports 3.0.5.15.0 used for company applications, that is, about 150 Forms and 300 Reports.
    No plans at all to migrate to iAS for some reasons beyond this topic, they will keep C/S with Forms 6i. The Upgrade to Forms 6i will be made after DB migration.
    They have 200 users, all only company members, no access from outside.
    Known problems so far:
    * Implicit datatype conversion between NUMBER and VARCHAR2 is handled more restrictive in 9i DB, there are some
    hints in the papers. So I dagged through all stored prcedures and made the necessary changes (TO_NUMBER ...).
    * Problems with CHAR returning stored procedured, or CHAR parameter taking procedures when
    connecting with Forms 5. I had NO hints in this case ... OK, replacing CHAR with VARCHAR2 does the job,
    but that was a pritty surprise ...
    * All Form Modules have to be recompiled for 9i DB, and then those modules cannot be run against the
    old 8i DB (because of different time stamps of the packages).
    Remaining questions:
    1) Just for my own curiousness, I would like to know
    why CHAR is becoming a problem when recompiling a Form 5
    for Oracle 9i; the problem is likely to be valid for more actual version, too.
    I mean AFAIK, Oracle has not deprecated CHAR as a datatype ?
    2) Concerning Forms 5 for Oracle 8i / 9i,
    are there some more hidden "riffs in the shallow water"
    to be aware of besides implicit conversion and CHAR difficulties ?
    Thank You in advance,
    Jan Gelbrich

    ThanX to many people viewing this thread. Many may already know,
    many may not, and I did not know also:
    Metalink confirmed that Forms 5 is not certified on Oracle 9i,
    and trying this is doomed
    to see many ORA-03114 / ORA-03113 errors. No way.
    I recompiled the same modules with Forms 6i without any changes
    and it worked.
    HTH others, too.

    Can you help me?
    I know that this version of DB is not supported. But I must a test.

  • Installation of forms reports and oracle application server 10g

    Hi,
    I have been using client server till now, now planning to move to 10g. Got the developer suite 10g.
    Tell me how and where to install forms/reports and Oracle application server... I mean forms reports should be on developer PC then what about application server? should it be on a different dedicated server? or can i have it on database server?
    in case, if I install application server on one server and database is on another server then what about forms and reports?
    please tell me which is the right option?

    One for the database server.
    One for the Application Server.
    The Application Server is basically used for hosting your forms and reports, so you dont have to place the forms and reports on the developer PC or at any other server.

  • PL/SQL does not work in Oracle 8i Personal Edition

    I just installed Oracle 8i Personal Edition for Win 98. Everything works perfectly, except the PL/SQL.
    Then I tried to install Oracle 8i EM, but I always get the listener or adapter error. Even when I tried to start the listener from lsnrctl prompt, it gives me those errors. Anyone can help?

    You need use correct type when you create object.
    Don't forget object in reality is a memory pointer,
    so what if you don't allocate correct memory in creation,
    you can't treat object as subtype.
    And meanwhile, it doesn't depend on Oracle version -
    your example doesn't work in 9.2.0.1 for example.
    SQL> declare
      2  super one_t;
      3  sub two_t := two_t(1, sysdate);
      4  begin
      5  super := two_t(1, sysdate);
      6  sub := treat(super as two_t);
      7  dbms_output.put_line('sub ' || sub.x || ' ' || sub.y );
      8  select treat(super as two_t) into sub from dual;
      9  dbms_output.put_line('super ' || super.x || ' ' || super.y );
    10  if sub is null then
    11  dbms_output.put_line('stupid');
    12  end if;
    13  if sub is of (two_t) then
    14  dbms_output.put_line('stupid');
    15  end if;
    16  end;
    17  /
    sub 1 08.06.05
    super 1 08.06.05
    stupid

    Vij,
    Assuming that Personal Oracle is up and running, you should check that the listener is running and listening on the port you are using.
    You can check the status with the following command (from the DOS prompt): lsnrctl status
    If the listener is not running start it with this command: lsnrctl start listener
    You can also have it start automatically by modifying the registry entry LISTENER_STARTUP to "AUTO"
    (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ORACLE\HOME0)
    Hope this helps
