Forms in Acrobat but not in Preview?

Hey everyone
Im working on building my first interactive form (with checkboxes) in Acrobat Pro 9.. I added a submit button (by making it an interactive field with the command mailto so the viewer can mail it back to me).
When I open this PDF in acrobat, the submit button works and opens a prompt to use desktop email or web based email.
When I open the PDF in Preview however, the submit button no longer works.
Any reason why? And is there a way I can change this?
Thanks everyone!

I had a potential customer discover this same issue recently and with much embarrassment to me.  I kept telling him how great the advanced PDF was and all he had to do was click my logo and the form could be sent to me effortlessly.
I thought I had tested the PDF within Preview, but I guess I overlooked that the reply function wasn't working.  Anyway, I've been around the software block enough to expect problems... But this issue IMO is not a small thing.
I wish companies would realize the severe pitfalls of being too protective of proprietary functionality within their products.  Because in the end, consumer confusion and frustration means we all loose.
So I'm supposed to have a disclaimer beside my PDF link on my site which says something like... "Hey this is an advanced PDF form, but it won't work with..."
Please forgive the rant if there's any update or fix I'm overlooking.

  • Edit a form in Acrobat but NOT in Designer

    I have Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1.7 on Windows XP SP3. What I want to know is how to edit a form in Acrobat without using LiveCycle Designer. Here's the issue: with a PDF open (generated via either a print job or File>Create PDF) under the Forms menu the first option is 'Create New Form...' and the second - greyed out - is 'Edit Form in Acrobat'. The problem is that if I run the option 'Create New Form...' then when I return to the menu the second option - now available - is 'Edit Form in Designer'... but I don't want to use Designer I want to use Acrobat. What do I have to do to make the 'Edit Form in Acrobat' option available? Thank you.

    Bernd,
    THANK YOU!
    If only the Help explained so simply and well for those of us who have barely used Acrobat...
    Best regards,
    Julian ('For God's Sake...' followed a quarter of an hour of refusals of all my other screen names)

  • PDFs display and print fine in Acrobat but not in Preview of PDFPenPro

    I have a curious problem in that check boxes in certain PDF files (insurance applications) appear as a "p" instead of a check box when I view the file in Preview or PDFPenPro. The check boxes appear and print properly when I open the PDF in Acrobat.
    I've checked the fonts with the Apple Font utility and there seems to be no issues with any of the fonts.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Strangely I'm now having exactly the same problem all of a sudden.  I've been building the book for about a month now (I've made about 6 before without any trouble) and along the way have been producing a pdf of the book to see how it will look.  Yesterday I noticed some of the images seemed to have lost colour when looking at the pdf version and then today, many pictures all of a sudden look exactly like the example you've supplied above.
    I've tried shutting down my imac and restarting thinking it was a memory issue, have checked if I had any filters activated (which I don't and I haven't used filters in books before either), have tried repairing then rebuilding aperture, copying the book to a new library, new location, opening on a different mac and then printing again but none of this had any positive effect.
    So from what I understand from your last post, the workaround you came up with was to revert to the original of each image that had the problem and then make the adjustments again?

  • Flattening annotations (comments) changes highlight color in Acrobat, but not Reader

    I have a pdf document with multiple comments consisting of sentences highlighted with different colors. The colors are the default, bright colors in the default commenting "Highlighter Tool Properties" palette. When I flatten with either Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 or X (Tools - Print Production - Preflight - flatten annotations and form fields) the colors of the highlights change from the normal 'bright' colors to dull 'pantone'-like colors. Interestingly, if I view the flattened file with Reader, the colors are fine (back to the bright colors), but when viewing with Acrobat Pro they are the dull pantone colors. It is as if there is a 'flag' in the file telling Acrobat (but not Reader) to change the displayed highlight colors.
    I'm using Mac OS X 10.9.5
    Does anyone know how I might change this so that the highlight colors do not change when flattening?
    Thanks

    Well, I was able to answer my own question. You have to go into "Flattener Preview" and change "Color Space" from the default "none" to something else, in my case, "Device RGB". Also, make sure to set page range.

  • Why certain functionality works in Adobe Acrobat, but not in LiveCycle Preview PDF?

    I have some simple logic in a LiveCycle form that will hide a subform when I click a checkbox.  When I save as dynamic PDF and open in Adobe Acrobat 9, it works fine, but when I test the .xdp in LiveCycle Preview PDF it does not.  I'm new to JavaScript and have wasted some time troubleshooting what I thought was a problem, only to find out it was working.  Am I doing something that is not capatible with Preview PDF?
    Attached below are images of hierarchy, design, and code.  I realize the hierarchy is more complex than it needs to be.  It is an excerpt I built to test this functionality, based on the full document.
    Thanks.
    form1.diag.Cervical.show::click - (JavaScript, client)
    if (this.rawValue == 1) {narrative.Cervical.mre.presence = "visible"} else {narrative.Cervical.mre.presence = "hidden"}
    form1.narrative.Cervical.mre::initialize - (JavaScript, client)
    this.presence = "hidden";

    Did you made the form as Dynamic and Interactive in the preview..
         1) Goto File menu -> Form Properties and select Defaults tab. Change the Default Render Format as Dynamic XML form
         2) Select the Preview Tab. Set the Preview type as "Interactive Form" and Preview Adobe XML form as Dynamic XML form
         3) Finally while saving the PDF select Save As Type as "Adobe Dynamic XML Form".
    Thanks

  • Form works perfectly, in Reader, in other acrobats, but not in Acrobat Pro 9???

    Hi,
    I have a form I made in LiveCycle designer. It has radio buttons and when a radio button is clicked, it passes an object to a function that then expands a table and adds rows for each item. It works in Reader 10 and 11, but I just had a coworker test it in Acrobat Professional 9 and it doesn't populate the table!???
    It gives this message
    this.resolveNode("createTable").createTable(incis, "container") is not a function 28:XFA:form1[0]:#pageSet[0]:Page1[0]:RadioButtonList[0]:incision[0]:click
    where createTable is the function and incis is the object passed, "container" is the table I'm affecting.
    How can this not work? Is it the users computer possibly? I had her verify and it's definitely 9 professional.
    Is there some bug in 9 professional? Is there a better syntax I should use?

    You can reference you script object in different ways.
    The shortest is just:
    createTable.createTable(incis, "container");
    A longer one is:
    xfa.resolveNode("xfa.form.form1.variables.createTable").createTable(incis, "container");
    But I really would rename either the script object or the function, as it's not good to the same name for two different objects.
    And you should turn off logging in the colsole with console.println() in the final form.
    Btw: Is there any reason you put everything on the master page? Regulary you wouldn't put anything than the logo and some header or footers on such page.

  • Text Caption appears in Edit Mode but not in Preview Project or Web Browser

    I'm using Cp4 and have downloaded Adobe Flash 10 Active X, it's ver 10.1.82.76.  I've added a simple text caption with these options:
    Timing Display:  Rest of slide
    Appear after:  2.0 seconds
    Transition effect:  Fade in only
    In: .5 seconds
    And Visible is checked
    I also have a simple line that I drew with the draw line tool and included an arrow on the end of it.
    Everything on the screen works including the click box, the animated text and the failure caption.  For some reason the text caption and the arrow are not appearing except in Edit Mode.  In Preview Project, they disapper but the click box, failure caption and animated text work fine.
    I've rebooted, copied this screen into a new instance of Cp4, re-created these objects on a freshly recorded screen, chosen Order: Bring to Front, created a brand new screen completely from scratch and downloaded the Flash 10 Active X version mentioned above.
    They funny thing is, is that the text caption and arrow works fine on other screens in the project.  I have 76 screens total.
    I'm running Windows XP.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi there
    Can you post a screen capture of what your Timeline looks like?
    Odds are your Click Box is pausing in a weird place.
    Cheers... Rick

  • InitState works in Acrobat but not Reader

    Hi I am new here and not very good with javascript, so please bare with me.
    I have created a document with five radio buttons that toggle between layers via executing OCG .state and .initState scripts depending on which button is selected.  Both work fine in Acrobat in setting the current state and the default state of the layers. But when I open the document in Reader, only .state seems to toggle between layer visibility and .initState fails to set the default state of layers.  Essentially what I need is to be able to set the default state to layers in Reader.   I noticed that the Layer Properties panal is not editable in reader and that this may be the culprit, but I can not find how to activate it or to even enable manualy setting the default state of layers to on or off.
    In addition to the FindOCG script at the document level here are samples of what I have set as mouse up actions to the radio buttons.
    FindOCG("LayerName).state = true;
    FindOCG("LayerName").initState = true;
    Each of these is its own action.
    I am using Acrobat Pro 10.1.8 and Reader 11.0.3 on Windows 7 Ultimate.
    Any help with this would be greatly apriciated.
    Thanks
    Jesse

    I have a project to create editable business cards to be distributed through our franchise system.  We have several designs and combinations of double sided business cards.  In short my goal was to be able to toggle between combinations of front and back designs (1st and 2nd pages) in the form of different layers for double sided business cards.  It seemed doable at first and is functioning just fine in Acrobat.  I thought it would be nice to distribute one PDF rather than several, which is what our franchisees like. The PDFs have form fields for all the variable information.  I can toggle between form and design layouts, but the design layouts do not hold after saving and re-opening in Reader because in adition to toggling the layer visibility I have to set the default open state of the visible layers to on so that when the PDF is re-openend, say at a press to be printed, the correct layers are displayed and printed without the press having to make any edits.  The .initState simply is not effecting the default states in Reader.  As for runtime code, I don't know what that is.  I don't know much about coding, I figured out just enough to get this far.

  • Bad quality in Acrobat and not in Preview

    Hello,
    When I open a pdf-file with Preview it looks perfect. When I open the same file with Acrobat Pro it looks crappy.
    Pdf's created by Logic Pro come out with drop-shadows when opened in Acrobat. When opened in Prview they look perfect.
    What is the problem here??
    I am hoping for a solution desperately....
    Annemiek

    Agree, have same problem with barcodes and other. You have to zoom in really large to get the barcode look like it is. In Apple Preview there is no such problem. Maby there is a setting in acrobat to fix this but have not found it yet. A fix of this would be nice.

  • PDF images that magnify when clicked? (but not in Preview)

    I'm viewing a 3-page PDF document received from elsewhere, using Acrobat 7.0 Standard on a MacBook running OS 10.4.11. The document contains 4 figures. When I run the pointer (the "hand") over 2 of these images, a short horizontal bar with a short arrow pointing downward from it appears inside the hand. Clicking once significantly magnifies the size of the image, up to full screen or full window width. What happens with further clicks is a bit confusing, but there is no further magnification, and eventually a demagnification back to the initial size.
    Nothing like this happens with the other two figures, and nothing like this happens if I view the document in Mac Preview. Only limited information on how this PDF document was created is available, except that maybe PowerPoint was involved at some stage.
    Any ideas as to what's going on here?
    Thanks for any info.

    Hi A.E. --
    If you're looking for a better response than you've gotten so far, I'd suggest the Mac Acrobat forums at http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ee6b2ed/
    There's a chance that someone here may know, but since it's clearly an Acrobat "feature" (given that it doesn't occur in Preview), someone will DEFINITELY know the answer over there.
    Best of luck!

  • Email Submit button works in Acrobat but not Reader

    I have a form with an email submit button.  When those who have Adobe Reader click on the Submit button, nothing happens.  For the users with Acrobat, the submit button works as designed. The users all have the latest version of Reader, Java and Flash.  When the Acrobat users click the button a box appears asking them to select Desktop or Internet email.  Once they make a selection, the form is sent.  When the Reader users click the button nothing happens.  I'm sure there must be a setting somewhere that I need to adjust.  Can you help me?

    Hi Susan,
    I appreciate we have meandered through this, but bear with us...
    Here is a screen shot of a regular button set up to return the completed form as a PDF.
    Now if you deploy this form WITHOUT Reader Enabling the form, then users with Reader will see this warning:
    However before you deploy the form open it in Acrobat and go to the Advanced menu (in version 9) and select "Extend features in Acrobat Reader" and save the form with an amended name. Then send this new "Reader extended" form out to the users with Reader and they will be able to return the completed PDF.
    Without seeing the actual form it is difficult to work out how the submit button is set up.
    Hope that helps,
    Niall

  • NEF images loaded on iMAC into PSCC are distorted, but not on Preview or second iMAC or MacBook Air

    NEF images loaded onto one IMAC into PSCC are distorted but show normally in Preview.   Same NEF on second iMAC and MacBook Air are not distorted.   Questions
    1.     Is there a setting in PSCC that needs to be tweaked
    2.   Is the PSCC loaded on the iMAC corrupted or need repair?   How does one determine which and how to fix?
    Thanks

    You have some lens correction enabled or a graphics hardware acceleration issue. nothing that a reinstall would fix. Since you haven't provided any relevant exact technical info, nobody can say more.
