Forte/ActiveX/OLE Data access

Hi folks,
We are hoping to use a Forte 4GL service-object to access some third-party
data in a proprietary database. The vendor has recently provided an ActiveX
Component with an OLE DB/ADO interface. The ADO interface and ActiveX
component reside on a web-server and they have demonstrated access via
Visual Basic script and ASP. From what I can see, languages such as VB, C
and C++ seem to be able to communicate with the ActiveX components directly,
so should I be attempting to use straight OLE commands from Forte ? I wasn't
sure whether I needed to get an OCX (or OLB?) created for the ADO interface
or the ActiveX component so I can analyse it with OLEGEN. (The vendor
doesn't
believe this is possible anyway !)
Any advice or help would be much appreciated !

• Reliability of Forte's OLE Automation Server

Hi Forte Users,
We are currently working on the feasibility of developing OLE interface
for our existing Forte services. In that process we are wondering about the
reliability these Forte OLE servers as compared to any other normal Forte
Servers. Has anyone have any experience of using them or any ideas about the
thing we need to concentrate before starting the development of these
servers.
Any input on this issue will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

A point worth mentioning here is about fail-over of service objects
that are configured as OLE automation servers.
If you are using Forte clients to talk to the service object,
then you really will not see any changes in automatic failover
situations.
However, in case of a non-Forte client( a.k.a. OLE client ), the
automatic failover does not happen. The non-Forte clients should be
coded to detect communication failures with the primary server. They
should have the intelligence to re-connect and retry methods on the (
new ) OLE server. This means you will have to program fail-over logic in
non-Forte clients, which you get for free with Forte clients.
I am not sure what kind of requirements is driving your process of
converting Forte services to OLE servers, but it is worth deliberating
on this problem, if you are not planning to use non-Forte clients, but
want to implement the services as OLE automation server.
Ofcourse you don't have to worry about this issue if you are not
planning to use non-Forte clients...

Subject: Re: Reliability of Forte's OLE Automation Server
Hi,
Essentially, I don't see any big differences between configuring and
exporting
the Forte service objects as normal Forte servers and DCE, Encina,
Tuxedo,
Object Broker, IIOP or OLE servers. We have already succeeded
configuring the
Forte servers as IIOP and OLE servers. Our Visual Basic client can
communicate
with the OLE server. The big difficulties are that there are two
limitations to
what elements of the service object€s class are available to an OLE
client.
First, an OLE client application can access any methods provided by that
service
object€s class, except for methods that use objects as parameters.
Second, OLE
clients can not access attributes of a Forte service object. OLE
clients can
only pass the following objects and data types as parameters and return
values:
TOOL data type Maps to OLE data type
Boolean Boolean
Cdispatch IDispatch
Cunknown IUnknown
Double Double
Float Float
Integer Long
i2 Iteger
string String
ui2 Short
ui4 Long
If a Forte service object includes methods that have object parameters
or return
values other than CUnknown and CDispatch, these methods are not included
as part
of the interface to this OLE server. Compared to the IIOP
configurations, the
limitations listed above may be too strict, especially, when you want to
export
your existing Forte services which may have interfaces with classes as
their
parameters or return types. But for IIOP, you can freely pass class
objects
(even deeply nested and derived) as method€s parameters or return
values. This
feature has significantly saved our development and maintenance time.
Other
alternatives may be to write the wrappers to overcome these limitations.
In one word, if you intend to integrate the EXISTING codes, which have
methods
with class parameters, you'd better to avoid configuring Forte service
objects
as OLE server. Try to use IIOP as much as you can because it is more
OOP
compatible and interoperable.

• Website needs Microsoft Data Access - Active X Data Objects

I have a number of websites for work that are seem to be built around Internet Explorer. When I try to open them on my Mac at home with Safari, I get message that I pasted below.
I'm thinking this might be related to the fact that when I open them on a PC for the first time it shows a similar message, but Internet Explorer prompts me to download and run "Microsoft Data Access - Active X Data Objects", and then it runs fine.
Based on this I'm assuming it's a lack of these "objects" that are causing this problem. Is there any equivalent to these components for the Mac? Anything I can try to access these websites from my Mac? I've tried using Firefox as well, which has the exact same issue.
Right now I've got to fire up my 2006 PC laptop to use Internet Explorer every time I need access to these sites. I realize I could install windows on my Mac with bootcamp and restart in windows every time I need access, but that seems like a waste just to visit 2 websites. Any advice?

• RE: OLE and Access Segmentation Violations

Hi all,
I did not work with OLE automation for external components, but while developing the external components, C++, in one of our projects I've experienced the same error "Access Segmentation Violations". I've found out that this is because of memory access beyond the component's allocated space AND/OR freeing up the unallocated memory space for the components.
Hope this clue may help u.

Subject: OLE and Access Segmentation Violations
Has anybody used Forte to communicate with external components using OLE
Automation? We are creating segmentation violations through some of our
use of this interface, and need to know if there are some 'golden rules'
that can guide developers as they use the feature.
Thank you!

Hi!
I am not sure that I can give you any "golden rules" for interfacing
with OLE, but I can give you some thoughts on where to look for problems
that can result in Segmentation Violations.
I have often seen segmentation violations arise as a result of a NIL
object. You might want to try turning on the trc:lo:25 trace flag to
see if there is a NIL object exception being raise right before the seg
v. You have to be careful with the trc:lo:25 flag, though, since it
will show you every exception, no matter what, that is raised within
Forte (even if it's been handled internally). This is of greater
significance to OLE projects, since Forte tries several different ways
of starting an OLE server and uses internally handled exceptions to
notify itself if a certain method failed.
Another thing to try is just-in-time debugging. You will need Microsoft
Visual C++ installed on the machine where the OLE code is running, and
you will need to set the FORTE_NOHANDLER environment variable to TRUE.
In the MSVC development environment, go to the Tools --> Options
properties sheet, and choose the Debug tab. On that tab, make sure that
Just-In-Time Debugging is selected. Then, run the application. When
you encounter the seg v, you should get a dialog box asking if you want
to debug the application. Choosing yes (actually, I think that pressing
Cancel does this - the dialog box tells you) will bring you into the
MSVC development environment, where you can try some intense debugging.
I hope this helps!

The same call works fine when running on the device (iPhone) using debug build. When running with a release build, the result handler is never called (nor is the fault handler called). Viewing the BlazeDS logs in debug mode, the call is received and send back with data. I've narrowed it down to what seems to be a data size issue.
I have targeted one specific data call that returns in the String value a string length of 44kb, which fails in the release build (result or fault handler never called), but the result handler is called as expected in debug build. When I do not populate the String value (in server side Java code) on the object (just set it empty string), the result handler is then called, and the object is returned (release build).
The custom object being returned in the call is a very a simple object, with getters/setters for simple types boolean, int, String, and one org.23c.dom.Document type. This same object type is used on other other RemoteObject calls (different data) and works fine (release and debug builds). I originally was returning as a Document, but, just to make sure this wasn't the problem, changed the value to be returned to a String, just to rule out XML/Dom issues in serialization.
I don't understand 1) why the release build vs. debug build behavior is different for a RemoteObject call, 2) why the calls work in debug build when sending over a somewhat large (but, not unreasonable) amount of data in a String object, but not in release build.
I have't tried to find out exactly where the failure point in size is, but, not sure that's even relevant, since 44kb isn't an unreasonable size to expect.
By turning on the Debug mode in BlazeDS, I can see the object and it's attributes being serialized and everything looks good there. The calls are received and processed appropriately in BlazeDS for both debug and release build testing.
Anyone have an idea on other things to try to debug/resolve this?
Platform testing is BlazeDS 4, Flashbuilder 4.7, Websphere 8 server, iPhone (iOS 7.1.2). Tried using multiple Flex SDK's 4.12 to the latest 4.13, with no change in behavior.
Thanks!

After a week's worth of debugging, I found the issue.
The Java type returned from the call was defined as ArrayList. Changing it to List resolved the problem.
I'm not sure why ArrayList isn't a valid return type, I've been looking at the Adobe docs, and still can't see why this isn't valid. And, why it works in Debug mode and not in Release build is even stranger. Maybe someone can shed some light on the logic here to me.

• How can I disable data access on C1-01 ?

I have a C1-01, for emergency use only. Today it displayed an unsolicited "Download Failed", message, and sure enough, my paygo account had been emptied. How can I prevent all data access, ie attempts to update firmware, internet access, etc?
TIA, Richard
Solved!
Go to Solution.

easiest way is to contact your network operator and ask them to disable your data plan and all internet access on your device. there are also a few miscellaneous settings in your phone, so you can try deleting access points if they are displayed in the Settings. i would check the phone Settings menu and the Web browser settings for items that you can turn off / disable.

• How to get Current Log in BO user name in data access driver

In universe, to get the current log in user is via @Variable('BOUSER').
Right now, I need to be able to get the user name in the data access driver. I am writing a customized data access driver because we need to patch some where clause on the the query generated by the universe based on the logged-in user info. I only think of using end_sql parameter or adding an universe level filter to patch the @Variable('BOUSER') to the query, which would not work if user want to use customized query.
Can anyone tell me how to get currentBO user name from connection server ? or how @Variable('BOUSER') is translated into the logged-in user name in the universe?

Shweta,
The link you provided was the Auditor guide for BO 6.x, I'm not sure it that is going to help Karen or not.
Karen,
There is function called connection
(usage: =connection([Query Name]), where [Query Name]
denotes the name of the tab for the query under Edit Query)
Here is some of the output from connection:
4;ODBC18;MS SQL Server 2000166; VERSION=7; USER=xxxxx;
PASSWORD=; DBTYPE=Relational; DATABASE=xxx_xxxx;
ODBC_USER=xxxxxx; ODBC_PASSWORD=; BO_DSN=xxxx_xxxx;
BO_DRV_CONNECT_MODE=0; 224; VERSION=6; Name=xxxxx; Shared=4;
LoginTimeout=600; Timeout=600; Pool Time=60; Array Fetch Size=10;
Array Bind Size=5; RecommendedLenTransfert=1000; Password_Encryption=x;
AliasTable=; MeasureDimension=; Hint=; ConnectInit=; ArrayFetch=1;
I'm not sure if this info helps out either, being that connection provides info on a post-processing basis and it sounds like you need to get out ahead of the SQL generation. The @variable('bouser') would seem like the place to be, however, in allowing custom SQL to take place you loose the bouser due to an individual could customize the SQL to the point that it gets unwantingly yanked out. The end_sql might be your answer...
Thanks,
John

I do not know your EJB Service. But you should pass the credentials of the current logged on portal user to your service. That's not by default I think.
I had a similar problem with CAF developed webservices. I had to turn on permission checks in my web service and passed the credentials via logon ticket.

• Issue with Enterprise Library's Data Access Application

I do not know if I have the correct forum for this post. I hve put it in what I believe is the most likely best forum, but please move this if there is a more germane forum for it.
I have inherited a solution (C#) which uses the reference Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data. The reference was included with the codebase I inherited, there are no missing references.
When the library is called with:
Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data.ExecuteDataSet("configConfigurationKeysSelect", parameterValues);
It complains with the runtime error:
[InvalidOperationException: The stored procedure 'configConfigurationKeysSelect' doesn't exist.] (I have put the full trace below)
This is true, there IS no stored procedure 'configConfigurationKeysSelect' but there is a table named 'configConfigurationKeys.'
I assumed this stored procedure is built on the fly to select from that table? Must I do something regarding Enterprise Library's Data Access Application so that this works on the system I am running it on? (I am simply accessing the references
included with the sourced for this, nothing else). I am looking for some guidance here, and thanks in advance.

Why do you assume that a stored procedure is create on the fly? Looking at the documentation for this component, I don't see a mention of such.

• 0187 EAIA Data access error Lenovo Twist

When the error happend the systemboard was replaced (0187 EAIA Data access error on startup), and the error came back up again. Replaced the systemboard again and the error persists. Can't update eprom serial information because of this error. I currently have about 6 machines doing the same thing, and was wondering if anyone else had experianced this issue?

I get the same error on a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad S540 (+-1 month old). Besides that first issue I'm also getting these errors:
2200: Machine Type and Serial Number are invalid
2201: Machine UUID is invalid
These occur together and only in about one out of every ten boots.
Curious what's wrong here.

• "unable to connect to the data access service" installing report server

Trying to do a 2 server SCOM 2012 R2 install on Server 2012 w/SQL 2012. Management server and operations console on one, and SQL, web console, and reporting server on the other. When I get to the web console and reporting server install, and
the "Specify Management Server" screen, I input the 1st management server name and it gives me a red X with the message:
"Unable to connect to the Data Access service for this management server. Ensure the Data Access service is running and that the service, the management group, and setup are all the same version."
Here is the setup log error:
"Info: :Could not connect to Management Server: scom-app with exception: Threw Exception.Type: System.ArgumentException, Exception Error Code: 0x80070057, Exception.Message: Version string portion was too short or
too long."
I don't see the "Data Access" service in services on either server. I followed all of the setup prereqs in SCOM 2012 unleashed book, and also referenced this article for setup advice:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2013/01/16/opsmgr-2012-sp1-quickstart-deployment-guide.aspx
Everything seems to be working until I get to this point.
Thank you for any help you can provide,
Dan

Hi Tom,
1. Did the setup complete successfully on the MS and Console server?
>>>Yes, without issue
2. You do not see the service "System Center Data Access Service"
>>>I do indeed see it on the MS and Console server, it is set to Auto and running. (I also tried rebooting this server and retried, no help)
3. Is the Windows Firewall enabled?
>>>It has symantec endpoint protection. I disabled symantec completely on both servers and retried, no help.
Thx,

• How to Install Oracle Data Access Components (ODAC) on Windows Server 2003?

I recently installed "32-bit Oracle Data Access Components (ODAC) with Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio" on my computer (Windows 7, 64bit). Everything seems fine and I can develop and run my application in Visual Studio 2010 and IIS 7.
Now, when I deploy my application to the Server, it raises error:
Exception: System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleCommand' threw an exception. ---> Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleException: The provider is not compatible with the version of Oracle client
Obviously I need to install ODAC on the server, too. My server is:
- Windows 2003 32 bit R2 (I know, I know!)
- IIS 6
So. I downloaded the same installation from Oracle website (ODAC 11.2 Release 5 and Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio [11.2.0.3.20]) and installed it on the server. But still getting the same error.
PS: When I was installing, I chose Oracle Data Access Component for Oracle Client 11.2.0.3.20 in Oracle Universal Installer. hmmmm. Should I choose "Oracle Server" instead? Screenshot

ODP.NET, Unmanaged Driver uses unmanaged dependencies in the Oracle Client. The error you see means you have another Oracle Client installed on the Win2003 machine and ODP.NET is attempting to load the incorrect Oracle Client version, rather than the version you installed ODP.NET with.
What you need to do is direct ODP.NET where to find the correct version of its unamanaged Oracle Client dependencies. This will be generally the bin directory of your Oracle Client home that was installed with ODP.NET.
You can learn more about DllPath here:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E20434_01/doc/win.112/e23174/InstallODP.htm#sthref94
If you're not familiar with how to set ODP.NET settings in the Registry or .NET config files, you can read how to do that here:
