Forté - Tivoli Integration

Hi Forté experts,Has anybody experienced the
integration between Tivoli
and Forté ?
What we would like to do is to monitoring a Forté
application using Tivoli. So we would like to be able
to inquiry Forté Agents
from Tivoli in order to have the same information
showed on Forté Environment Console.
We had a look to the Forté Shareware document related
to Forte Tivoli integration.
This document is dated end 1996 so probably in not
describing the latest integration capabilities between
Tivoli & Forté.
The document describes how to execute Forté Fscripts
and Escripts scripts using Tivoli Task libraries.
It also describes the use of Tivoli Sentry with 3
options :
1) Calling C shell that executes Forté commands and
send the response to Tivoli via the standard output.
2) Using Sentry API to communicate with Tivoli (is not
explaned on the document).
3) Using Tivoli WASYNC command in order to send
messages from Forté to Tivoli.
Looking at Tivoli documentation I found interesting
information about AMS (Application Management
Specification).
This Tivoli utility use an ADF (Application
Description File) in order to Monitor or Deploy
external application developed with tools like
Forté,PowerSoft ..
I hope somebody around the world has already used this
new integration feature.
Any help will be really appreciated.

• Re: Forte /FileNet integration

Hi Jelic,
We, at the County of Alameda, are using Forte and FileNet for some time
now.
As I was not clear on what specific interface issues you are dealing with I
thought it is a good idea to decribe what we are doing and hopefully that
may answer some of your questions.
For now, we are using FileNet's workflo language i.e. WFL scripts for
interfacing with FileNet.
The interfacing issues are :
1. Logon to FileNet on the client (Win95)
For logging on to FileNet we are currently using a C program which is
launched by our Forte application and is passed the Username, Password.
This program gets the window handle of the Logon Window and pokes in the
username and password in the respective fields and logs on. Its a hack but
it works well.
2. Display Images in FileNet's Image viewer - we use Windows DDE.
3. Indexing of documents both scanned and generated.
We have a document generation system which uses a FileNet macro for MS-Word
to save a document to FileNet. We also use FileNet's Scanning software to
scan documents. Both of these use a barcode to facilitate indexing. The
Indexer Program written in Forte launches a WFL script to get the
barcode/docID pairs from FileNet's distributor queues and indexes it with
the application database. It also laucnhes another WFL script which removes
the entries from the distributor queues and puts it into a error queue if
it was not indexed.
Going forward, we are now working on using WAL API to interface with
FileNet.
1. For FileNet Logon and Display : we plan to wrap C calls implemented as
DLL functions.
2. For the Indexer program too, we plan to wrap all calls we need in C
implemented as a DLL. Since the WAL API is available for Unix (HP_UX in our
case) we may create a library on Unix and run the Indexer Application as a
service object instead. This is one of the reasons we are not considering
using ActiveX.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for quick response. We are using
VB app with ActiveX controls and FileNet Image viewer(connected through
DDE) = CLIENT
accsessing FileNet IMS and Oracle DB = SERVER that is working very well
VB App + FileNet ActiveX Controls (client)
<------------TCP/IP-----------> FileNetIMS + ORACLE (server)
POINT 1:
Our intend is to replace VB App (written by somebody else) with Forte.
I've got tech. notes (SMALL prototype) from Forte consultant (Valerie
Limpan)how to implement ActiveX controls on server side because we don't
like to use ActiveX on each desktop, only on server side. But this is
not so common(Forte recommends using ActiveX controls with window
classes on client side) and I am afraid to go with a real BIG project
using something that is not proven very well ?
Forte(Client) <-----> Forte + FileNet ActiveX Controls(server1)
<------------TCP/IP-----------> FileNetIMS + ORACLE(server2)
POINT 2:
Probably, we can use WAL(C libraries) instead ActiveX controls, but from
pdf files I can not find any example. 1300 pages. Do I have to print all
of this to get better understandig ?
POINT 3:
Also, Is FileNet willing to support us using ActiveX controls inside
Forte dev. enviroment and other way round?
POINT 4:
Is FileNet Panagan suite of products will make any difference to our
problem ?
Sorry if some of this statement are wrong. My experience with both
products is limited, but not with ActiveX and OO.
Again, thank you for your quick response. May be this more detail
explanation will help you to find some answers.

• Forte' Shareware: Forte'/CICS integration

(I send again this mail, as I don't know if it has been properly
broadcasted.
So excuse me if you receive this mail twice.)
Hi All,
Recently I have downloaded the "Forte' shareware: Forte'/CICS integration"
solution from the Forte' web site.
Unfortunately I have audited that this solution has been developed for
"CICS for Windows NT Version 2" while we have installed "IBM Transaction
Server for Windows NT, Version 4" containing "CICS for Windows NT, V4" and
"CICS Client for Windows NT, V2.0.1.".
I have understood that in our installation the necessary libraries have
furnished with the CICS Client.
I tried to compile ntlisten.c : here is my make file.
NTLISTEN.MAK
ntlisten.exe: ntlisten.obj
link /nod ntlisten.obj cclwin32.lib libc.lib kernel32.lib user32.lib
gdi32.lib wsock32.lib
ntlisten.obj: ntlisten.c
cl /c /MT /DWIN32 /D_WIN32 /D_X86_=1 /DCICS_W32 ntlisten.c
The problem is that the "_beginthread" function doesn't come resolved.
ERROR LNK2001: Unresolved external symbol _beginthread
I have seen that inside the remarks the author declares that:
" I compiled it with this command:
cl /MT /D_WIN32 ntlisten.c wsock32.lib faacicnt.lib "
Therefore I think that the _beginthread symbol might be defined in the
FAACICNT.LIB library which however I am not able to locate in my
installation of CICS.
Any experiences would be appreciated.

If you have worked on workflows earlier the procedure is very simple. You just need to enter certain parameter values of your application in SWFVISU for the respective task and re-register your system in UWL administration. Thats it! your webdynpro and workflows are integrated. For details on the parameters check the following link,
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/19/bff5c18ba44da4a4ca68cf572dabda/frameset.htm
There are also a couple of blogs on "launching webdynpro from UWL" (Procedure for both Java and webdynpro is almost similar). You can also check these for more details.

• Active Directory - Forte/UDS integration

Does any body integrated Active Directory Server with Forte ?
We are trying to integrate Forte with Active Directory Server.
Our first step is to open a session on Active Directory from Forte and that was successful.
The second step is to bind to the Active Directory server so as to authenticate the user against the Active Directory service fails.
The error message is :- "ASN.1 Integer does not begin with 0x02 at offset 0".
we are using Forte/UDS 5.0.3 and Windows Server 2000 SP4 for Active Directory.
Any help you can provide in this matter is greatly appreciated

We plan to install CRM 2007 ABAP+Java stack (dual stack).
I can tell you from my experience: avoid dual stack installations wherever possible because
- having to manage memory and resources for two engines running at the same time can be cumbersome
- you create a total dependency between ABAP + Java - means, if you e.g . run a portal and need to update the Java stack to a higher SP you have to also install the related ABAP SPs
- if you do release upgrades you have to run two upgrade processes in parallel since they will "wait for each other", you can´t upgrade separately
- depending on what database you use you must R3load to do system copies (no backup/restore)

could theoretically call-in to forte from a C++ dll in actuate, the simpler
way (the way we did it) was to get a socket DLL ( I grabbed source for a
socket listener/writer off the web somewhere, but I don't have it handy)
and used forte's external connection class for the other end.
The scenario is:
Forte has a listener on a pre-defined port (pick one)
Simple formatted requests are sent to forte from actuate (e.g., the message
'report1 1,2,3\n ' would run a forte command called report1 with args 1,2
and 3)
Forte processes the command and sends back the results in tab delimited
form.
Actuate reads the results a line at a time and formats the data.
Worked well, took about a week to develop and is reliable.

The AS/400 has supported Berkley Sockets; since, Release V3R1. Your
best bet for now is probably to use Forte's ExternalConnection class to
communicate with a C socket provider/consumer on the AS/400 side.
Please see Forte's "Integrating With External Systems" manual for
further information on the ExternalConnection class.
Also, I heard a couple of months ago that IBM plans to incorporate a
fully compliant CORBA ORB in a future release of OS/400. I haven't
heard if they have followed through on this. If so, CORBA would provide
another means for you to communicate with your AS/400 from Forte.

• WG: Integrating an SCM within Forte

Hello,
we have implemented an integration of PVCS in Forte. A Forte Consultant did
this for us. You can use hooks which are provided by Forte when integrating
into the forte repository. At this point you can export the workspace and

Forte doesn't provide any SCM, but you need some solution. Forte writes all
information into a repository, while PVCS bases on files. This is a little
complicated and not very nice.

which are successfully using Forte with Mercury (one of these sites is even
located here in Australia!). The problems described in the attached
message or accurate; however, the workarounds are documented and easy to
understand.
You can use Mercury today with Forte.
In addition, Mercury has been working for several months now on an even
tighter integration with Forte. This project has been extremely
successful. There is at least one Forte site in the USA which is using
this Forte/Mercury integrated product. According to the Mercury rep, the
Mercury/Forte tighter integration is now in beta testing and should be
production in May/June 1997. This information was verified by my contacts
at Forte HQ. If any of you need more detailed information than this please
contact me or your Mercury representative.
ClassIQ
ClassIQ currently has a small number of sites using its testing tools which
are written in Forte. Needless to say, ClassIQ is very tightly integrated
with the Forte environment. If you would like to know more about ClassIQ
contact Joe Burns at 105210,[email protected].
I am sure there are many other people using other testing tools with
Forte....these are just the two I have heard about in the initial responses
to my query. I would love to hear about other testing tools which work
well with Forte.

Eric

Hi,
We evaluated quite a few test tools in relation to the forte
environment. All of them have the same problem : The inability to
correctly map Forte widgets. Most of them cannot recognise
Outlinefields, ArrayFields etc. Even if they do recognise a forte widget
only basic properties like the size of the widget, its position on the
screen etc. are recorded. Data contents of the widget are not
recognized.
To clarify the above points : Given a screen with a TextData widget, you
can record and playback this sequence without any problems with most
Test tools :- Position the mouse on the widget, Type 'Testing' .
Ideally, the TextData widget should have a property 'Content' or 'Value'
(different test tools call it differently) which will have the value
'Testing'. In case of forte this does not happen. What is recorded are
the low level mouse movements or keyboard strokes. The position on the
screen where the value is typed is recorded and played back.
Low level recording maybe acceptable in some circumstances but say - you
have a widget which gets populated by a database query. How will you
test the values displayed ?
Some of the test tools are customizable i.e. you can actually create a
widget class of your own and try to map it to a recognized (by the Tool)
widget class. This will be a time consuming process with a great deal of
trial and error and no guarantees of success.
If the sole objective is navigate through screens and record and
playback, then most of the automated test tools work. If you want to
make full use of a test tools capabilities and want to go further and
intelligently record and playback, most test tools have very very
limited use.
Discussions with Test tool vendors have revealed the following :
- Forte has not released a Test API to any particular vendor or the
market at large
- Forte implementation sites are at the moment too few for any test tool
vendor to invest in Research and Development and come out with a Test
API.
So as it goes the chances of a fully compatible Forte test tool in the
near future are remote.
Forte's own AutoTester project has a limited usage. My own evaluation is
that it cannot be used for big sized implementations. Along with other
limitations, test management facilities that are particularly relevant
for big sized implementations simply don't exist with AutoTester.
The only product in the market that is Forte specific and is more a
testing Framework than a tool is TestIQ from ClassIQ. I am keen to get
information about TestIQ from any of its implementation sites. Again I
am not sure about its test management capabilities.
Hope the information helps,

Hi all,
We are about to embark on a sizable Forte development and are interested
in hearing from anybody who has successfully used automated test tools
with Forte. Also, does anybody know of a problem tracking tool that can
be linked to the Forte source repository for the purpose of tracking the

Subject: Automated test tools
I've read about Capture/Replay and played with the AutoTester project a
little. I'm curious as to the experiences that developers have had with
using these tools to automate testing of GUI applications. Has anyone
actually deployed an application that successfully uses these tools? How
does it compare against other automated test tools?
One limitation that I see with using Capture/Replay is that any non-Forte
client interfacing with my Forte code would not be able to use this
mechanism to perform its auto testing. Also, while playing with the
AutoTester I actually got a playback which was slightly different than what
I did while doing the capture.
Thanks,

I think you should also be able to publish the Forte Service Objects as DCOM
services. Then you can access them from within VB-scripts.

Hi Kenny,
I suggest you to use XML in order to publish your Forté services.
There is a Forté Library called HTTPDC that let you start up a listener that
answer to HTTP Request.
So you will have a ASP/Forté integration via HTTP/XML
Hope this helps.

Hi everybody!
I'm a new Forté developer, so i have some question about it, speciallyone:
I want to access Forté service objects through an ASP script. To be more
precise, I want to get back some informations (like, for exemple, the
information of a customer's account) from the Forté world and to make-upthe
web page in my ASP script.
Is it possible writing an ASP script (in VisualBasic for example) witch
calls Forté service objects?
How can I do that? Maybe by using Web Enterprise's libraries, but itseems
to me that Web access service objet returns only HTLM pages.
Any suggestions and explanations would be appreciated.

I think that to avoid install, the software could be located on a shared
drive,
and users linking to it through running 'ftexec' or directly the compiled
binaries.
For nodes not to appear in the environment as nodes, they could be defined
as members
of a model node '(which then would be in the environmnet)'
Putting a password in the environment could prevent nodes to be registered
there, but
might prevent the apps from being executed.

• How have people done Forte application to Forte applicationcommunicatio

I was wondering what architectures folks have been using to do Forte
application to Forte application integration on the client and at the server
level?
connected environments?
CORBA/IIOP?
Message Oriented Middleware?

Hi,
I have used MQSeries and CICS Client. They worked well, except that CICS Client
is for little applications... Tuxedo has also good reputation.
You should also consider a lower protocol like TCP/IP. I use it in synchrone and
asynchrone to support an application protocol with external connections. It
works very well. For instance, It can be an alternative to connected
environments, even for Forte Partitions (for example : you need to connect
several thousands of Forte clients without having to maintain your central
environment).
For asynchrone communcation, and low cost and equipment (external clients, B to
B, etc...) you can also use SMTP with external connections. If you use MIME base
64, you can also transfer serialized objects for instance. Then you can use SMTP
like VMS Mailbox (in old times). Be aware, of course, that you will not have any
delivery warranty on your messages, so you should take care about this on your
protocol.
Hope this helps,
