Forte UDS 5.1.8 Syntax

I am primarily a C# programmer with some java experience. We have an application that we purchased that uses Forte UDS 5.1.8. The syntax is easy to figure out but there is one thing that I have not been able to find documentation on. It is database or a structure that corresponds to the database. The syntax looks like this:
<tablename.columnname> = "whatever"
<tablename.columnname> = 1
numAVar = <tablename.columnname>
numOfRows = <tablename.count>
The < and > are part of the syntax.
Does anyone recognize this as being TOOL technology or is it possibly a part of a 3rd party preparser?
Thanks!

That was the only place in the documentation that I found that syntax which seemed to reference screen fields. However, we do not have any screens in forte. This software release is partly java/Websphere and partly Forte. The Websphere part handles all the HTML GUI and data storage while Forte provides for some additional backend processing yet to be converted to java.

Does any body integrated Active Directory Server with Forte ?
We are trying to integrate Forte with Active Directory Server.
Our first step is to open a session on Active Directory from Forte and that was successful.
The second step is to bind to the Active Directory server so as to authenticate the user against the Active Directory service fails.
The error message is :- "ASN.1 Integer does not begin with 0x02 at offset 0".

We plan to install CRM 2007 ABAP+Java stack (dual stack).
I can tell you from my experience: avoid dual stack installations wherever possible because
    - having to manage memory and resources for two engines running at the same time can be cumbersome
    - you create a total dependency between ABAP + Java - means, if you e.g . run a portal and need to update the Java stack to a higher SP you have to also install the related ABAP SPs
    - if you do release upgrades you have to run two upgrade processes in parallel since they will "wait for each other", you can´t upgrade separately
    - depending on what database you use you must R3load to do system copies (no backup/restore)

  • When will Forte/UDS finally get a decent development environment ??

As a enterprise computing environment nothing beats UDS/Forte (not even J2EE).
    however ...
In comparison to more 'modern' development environment(s), the Forte/UDS environment seems to be lacking a lot of features (like Code-Completion, Code-Highlighting, a decent class-explorer, Cross-references, etc).
Will there ever be a development environment that will support these features (like Forte 4 Java for instance) or will we be destined to puddle on with this 'stone age' environment forever ...
After all it is us developers that will have to make it all work ... a little support would be nice ...
    Hansz

I dought there will ever be a development environment like UDS/Forte 4GL. The only one that came close was SynerJ but that now is our of the picture because Sun decided not to support it. Forte 4 Java is almost there but lacks a lot of feature like partiton workshop to make it a good tool to use.

  • Is Forté UDS version 5.1.3 supported on Oracle 10?

    Hi,
in the company I work in we've got applications developed in Forté UDS 5.1.3 and we've got Oracle 8.1.7
We're going to change Oracle version and we'd like to upgrade towards Oracle 10.
Someone has told me Forté UDS 5.1.3 is only supported on Oracle 9 and not on Oracle 10. Do you agree with that? Can you help me to undestand whether it's true or not?
    Thanks in advance!

There are documentation and certification matixes provided at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/coll/S1_UnifiedDevelopmentServer_35
Why not look there.. and contact Sun support to clarify?
From a pure client-server perspective - the Forte database interface for Oracle supports need to support OCI (or JDBC) as communication interface to Oracle. The question thus is whether or not this interface can use the later OCI driver versions (9i, 10g, 11g). As a 9i OCI client can for example connect successfully to a 10g or 11g database instance, Forte can likely be used with such a client to connect to a newer Oracle version.

  • UDS Application Architecture Validation

    Hi Everyone,
I am curious to find out if there are any tools that can validate the existing UDS application architecture. Especially is there anything within the UDS family - say a UDS parser - that we can use?
    thanks in advance,
    Vamsi.

There is at least one Consulting tool still in existence that can analyse Forte/UDS code and provide limited feedback on the architecture used, but it focuses more on syntax and things considered to be poor (or risky) coding. As far as I know, it was developed within Forte to assist their Consultants in the field. It requires a fairly high degree of Forte/UDS Architecture knowledge to use correctly and especially to make good use of the results.

Thanks Roberto for your reply. I could not find "windows sockets.dll" anywhere. This .dll file does not exist even on the Win 2000 machines that I had no trouble invoking UDS Control Panel. My machine has wsock32.dll in the C:\WINNT\system32 directory and the system path is also set to point to that directory.
By the way, when someone else logs onto the same machine, he has no trouble bringing up UDS Control Panel. The problem occurs only if I logon. I also compared the environment variables with that person's environment variables and they are exactly the same.

  • Forte to Java Help

    Hello All,
I am new to this forum and new to Forte (working with it for about a year). I wanted to know the benefits of moving from Forte to Java. I am suppose to list all the benefits- pros & cons. I am reading on the subject but any help or advice from your end will also help.
    thanks.

As one of the engineers supporting Fort and IS EAI, I would like to add to the solid comments from "fortever" -- which I basically agree with. These are my personal comments, and do not represent any offical position by Sun. (I also really love the product, and worked for Fort before the acquisition in 1999.)
The fact is, computer science students and professional software developers have been focusing on Java for much more than a decade, and the pool of trained talent is thousands of times greater for Java, and growing. Fort is written in C++, and as a computer science student, I welcome and honor the migration to languages that have a garbage-collected runtime, like Java, TOOL, and Objective-C. As stable as Fort is, Java is refining and progressing the state of the art.
I also believe that the open source model for Java is a good thing, long term. Yes, products that are tightly integrated, like Fort, are wonderful. But I've been a software engineer for nearly 30 years, and I've lost count of the number of proprietary, tightly-integrated products that have fallen by the wayside. (I've been a part of companies that have wasted tens of millions of dollars on proprietary technology, and struggled to keep them alive for decades.) We are in the middle of a paradigm shift for large IT organizations. Once upon a time, you could not go wrong by recommending IBM and their proprietary technologies. Now, we have studies by the European Economic Community and governments in South America and Asia that are recommending open source products as a long-term, strategic solution -- BECAUSE they won't fall by the wayside in the same way.
New service-oriented architecture technologies are being support in the Java world, but not in Fort. For example, our Java CAPS development environment makes it easy to build very sophisticated applications and integration solutions using the latest WSDL, BPEL, etc. standards. Support for these standards are very basic and rather out-of-date in Fort UDS and IS EAI, and unlikely to improve as the product moves towards end of life.
Quite honestly, I don't believe you or your organization have a choice about moving from Fort. As flawed as Java is, it's getting better and better, and it's the only non-proprietary solution I know of that supports industrial sized, scalable, distributed, manageable, heterogeneous applications on all kinds of hardware.

  • Code generation problems

Has anyone else noticed that Forte (at least 3.0.e) seems to "skip"

If you are using a particular user account for installing UDS you should make sure the account you are using has administrator privileges. Also, check if you have set the Repository/Environment services (manager) to be executed under a particular user account. If your login account is one different than the one used by the repository/environment services you migth expect problems...

  • Integrating with SiteMinder

    Hi,
We are trying to integrate our Forte UDS web application with SiteMinder for user authentication. When SiteMinder is enabled and we run the EnableAccess method to register the web access service we get the following error:
SYSTEM ERROR: This object is already open for I/O and cannot be opened again.
How-ever, if SiteMinder is disabled, the Forte web component enabled, SiteMinder can then be enabled and works as expected. It appears that SiteMinder listening on the ports causes a problem for the EnableAccess method.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to resolve this.
