Forum Atom feed and the Off-Topic forum

I'm subscribed via https://bbs.archlinux.org/extern.php?ac … der=posted and I've just noticed I don't get any notification if a new thread gets opened in Off-Topic forum. I haven't yet checked if any other forum is also excluded.
I know that I can subscribe to this forum via 'Subscribe to this forum' but according to http://projects.archlinux.org/vhosts/bb … extern.php the default feed shouldn't miss any subforums, as there are no nfids mentioned.
What am I missing?

As I recall off-topic, dustbin, and TGN are log-in so that moderation there can be slightly more lenient, since its guaranteed its only our community in the place (no lurkers)? Not part of the 'main' forums in that sense, then.
EDIT: lurkers and/or bots, which is the main point.
This is correct. We don't want someone to type "Arch Linux" in a search engine and to get, as the first link, an off-topic forum thread about some random absurdities or some TGN rant.  The same goes with someone visiting the forum to see what kind of community Arch Linux has before installing it. It's a question of giving a good first impression while still being able to have a good time.

  • Why does the off-topic forum is only for registered users ?

    I discovered that when sending a link to the "I'm a nerd..." thread to co-workers, and they couldn't see it.

    off-topic is Arch specific and solely  to the community only.iirc this had been said earlier too.

  • Camera Settings and Printing -off topic

    Hi Everyone;
    My teenage cousin is going on a trip to Europe for a few weeks and she will be taking alot of digital pictures with her Canon point & shoot camera ( 5 MP SD30), but will not be able to unload her images from the SD card. She already has Three Cards totaling 1.5 GBs and does not want to buy more.
    So in order to increase the number images the card will hold, do you recommend lowering the resolution OR lowering the image quality by increasing the JPEG compression in the camera settings, for the purposes of printing ? ( obviously not all her images, but she may want to have some for her school yearbook, friends etc ).
    This is a question I have asked myself with my own digital cameras, over the years, if i have to shoot JPEG i usually have the settings to MAX resolution and Lowest compression, in case i want to print some.
    Also what would you recommend as the lowest resolution setting (in general, with any camera) if you want to print the following sizes?
    4 X 6
    5 X 7
    8 X 10 or US Letter
    Thanks in advance, and i realize this is a little off topic.

  • MQ, eSQL and CLOBs (Off Topic)

    Hi,
    Apologies for this way off topic post, but I figured someone here may know the answer to this one and save me some time digging / testing.
    We're designing a middleware hub using WBIMB (MQ) v5 and have the option of
    a. Sending a message to a JMS Listener that will write an entry in a database via JDBC
    b. Having the broker flow insert the record using a compute node / java node.
    If we choose option b my preference would be to use eSQL, but the database table has a CLOB column and I'm not sure whether this is supported.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help,
    Steve

    Hello Huffer Many thanks for your prompt reply. I have been doing a bit more research and came across an old spec for a "lenovo" hard-disk (HDD) with 320GB capacity used in numerous ThinkPads. Unfortunately it does not include the X300 model that i have. The full details can be found HERE. The height of the HDD is 7 (SEVEN) mm. I may be paranoid but can you please just confirm that the lenovo X300 ThinkPads (see full details above) with the 320GB HDD really have a height of 9.5mm and so will be able to take the HDD 2.5" with 2TB that I plan to buy. If the height really is only 7m then I have a problem.  Then I think that i will have to go up my idea of increasing the storage space. If you cannot answer the question with 100% certitude then I will have to reopen the laptop and measure the space available but that is a pain since I am new to all this and afraid of damaging the HDD. Thanks. Cheers. Steve.

  • A bit off topic, but what time should I arrive at the Keynote?

    I'm posting this in the FCP forum because this is the only one I read. I'm attending Macworld for the first time and I have the cheap tickets for the Keynote (user's conference). I have no idea how early I need to show up to wait in line to guarantee I get into the Keynote.
    Thanks and sorry for the off topic post.

    Just showing a pick of what I look like...hee.
    I will have an exhibitors pass, so I wonder if I can get in any later and still get good seats? HA! I will bring my lappy, to keep me occupied (I hope they have wireless access).
    For iChat reports I'd need all your iChat accounts. That would be one BIG group chat.

  • We had to change the feed adress and the epsiode adresses. Now all the episodes of my podcast are downloaded (although i have downloaded them already). How can I make the changes in my feed and avoid that all the episodes are reloaded?

    Hello,
    We had to change the feed adress (<itunes:new-feed-url>)and the epsiode adresses in the feed because the feed and the episode-files are on a new server. Now when i open my iTunes subscription of our podcast all the episodes of my podcast are downloaded again (although i have downloaded them already).
    My Question therefore is: How can I make the changes in my feed and avoid that all the episodes are reloaded?
    Maybe have an answer?
    Thank you very much.

    Thank you very much for your answer
    As I see now, our 'guid' tags contain the episode URLs
    To avoid this problem in the future i would like to change guid tags. Can you please tell me how a guid tag should look like if it is not the URL?
    Thank you for helping us!
    ps now it looks like this eg:
    <guid isPermaLink="false">http://www.castyourart.com/podcasts/213_thinkglobal_en.mp4</guid>

  • ATOM Feed parsing in Flex

    I need to parse an Atom Feed and display it into a Flex UI.
    As part of UI I am providing navigation links such as:
    Next Page, Previous Page, First Page and Last Page.
    The Feed looks like this:
    <feed xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom">
      <title>Alert Feed</title>
      <link rel="self" type="application/atom+xml" href="/alerts?page=1" />
      <link rel="next" type="application/atom+xml" href="/alerts?page=2" />
      <link rel="last" type="application/atom+xml" href="/alerts?page=4" />
    </feed>
    How can I read the next page href value when the user clicks on Next Page navigation link?
    Thanks,

  • Off topic - job market

    Hello
    Sorry for the off topic, after all this is a technical forum...
    I have been working with Apex for quite a while now and I find it a great tool. I enjoy working with it and I consider myself quite good at it.
    However I have concerns about my employability... Its job market seems to be almost non-existent where I live (UK). Even so, Apex seems to be now a mature product, with a growing user base, the Apex forum is one of the Oracle's most popular forums and the IT job market seems to be good here at the moment. Usually all those factors mean a buoyant job market, but it does not seem to be the case with Apex.
    I have other skills, and there are quite a few vacancies asking for them. I will not starve but it seems to me that if I want to change job I will have to stop working with Apex, which would be unfortunate for me (and for the community also ;-)
    Why is it so? Has anyone got the same impression? Is the Apex job market better in mainland Europe? Any insights welcome...
    Thanks
    Edith

    I think there is not a strong demand because it has replaced small development projects , these are usually in house or done by existing IT outsourcing companies
    Even though more large developments are being done , it remains a product geared at Access style development , which also has very little job market

  • Off-Topic OAS Discussion Groups/lists??

    Hi,
    My apologies for the Off-Topic post. Might you be able to direct
    me to a discussion group that deals with OAS and/or Servlet
    technology?? I'm having trouble running a servlet(which is part
    of a custom package) on OAS 4.0.8.1.

    The "more" option at the bottom appears on pages displayed via the "Overview" tab at the top of the column of topics. If you switch that to the Discussions tab choice, you'll have the "Next" plus page number choices.
    For any forum you can set the "Discussions" tab as your view preference by clicking the 'set as default' link next to it.

  • Off-topic section not available for outsiders

    Hi people!
    The Off-topic section is only visible when I am logged in. If I logout, I can't see it. I found that because I've sent the url from the photoshop thread (lots of good laughings) to a friend and he said that couldn't see it because he was not registered, acording to the message he got.
    So, is it on purpose? I can't see why, so I'm asking here.

    Yes, it is. The reason is that sometime threads in off-topics can degenerate because they can be of political/religious nature.  Such threads are not allowed but we can't check the forum 24hr/day.  Other threads in off-topics are  pointless blabber.  We don't want prospective users who are browsing the forums to know if Arch is OK for them or are searching help on installing it to see these posts.  They can give a bad first impression of Arch.  Once they register, we assume they have a better idea of the Arch community and realize that these threads are a minority.
    Your friends will need to register is they want to see the photoshop thread.

  • Web Portfolio Software Advice (off topic)

    hi all.
    i have been really happy with my ability to organize a very large amount of images in Aperture and to publish them easily to Flickr (among other things).
    this has now freed me up to focus on creating a new website for an old website that needs updating. right now i have just created a /link/ for the pictures on the webpages which takes the viewer to the flickr albums.
    i am looking at "themes" such as the WordPress Photography theme (http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/photography/) and i am also looking at sites that are using the "autoviewer" or "autoviewer pro" software.
    http://www.iloveconcrete.net/drive1/drive1.html
    http://www.simpleviewer.net/autoviewer/
    anyway, i am familiar with using wordpress UI but i am desperately trying to find a method where i don't have to use the wordpress image uploader. i guess the holy grail would be to just "publish" album "code" out of Aperture that i would then embed into a WP theme website which i am sure i could create in a week or something.
    anyway, does anyone know of anywhere i can ask such questions or get some leads on keeping this workflow simple but create a nice website at the same time?
    TIA and apologies for the off-topic post.
    jon

    I liked "Waves" and thought most of the sounds were good- the piano was very realistic to my casual listen. I did however find the backing strings of the first couple of minutes to be fairly "synth" sounding, maybe that's what you wanted, but to me it could have sounded more like an actual string ensemble. Later on it seemed to be working more to my liking with the strings playing individually.
    It's not the most expensive thing out there, but I have been using IK Multimedia's Philharmonik, which is not good for a lot of things, but it does really capture a real "woody" and "dry" sound on the cellos, violas, etc.
    I also tend to agree that MySpace could be a good addition for you. And I notice that your vox on the podcast was only coming at me from the left.
    Keep it up! It's a lot of fun to do- I'll send you a thing I wrote with Philharmonik and Sibelius 5, it's sort of just me learning those and not really finished, still, you'll get an idea of what Philharmonik sounds like.

  • Audio production education (way off topic)

    Hi all, sorry for the off-topic Q but I'm thinking about "formalizing" my audio production learning. Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with Berklee's online courses? It's pro tools heavy, but what one learns in one DAW can be ported to another I imagine.
    Thanks much!

    I've taken several online courses with Berklee, and found them to be very good. The only issue you really want to be clear about, is that you have necessary prior knowledge to take the class. The Pre-requisites.
    You must already be computer savy. You may need to have a certain background knowledge too. For instance, I was taking an arranging class, and we had to upload homework every 2 days. They recommended using Finale. It might take me 2 hours to do the assignment, but then it took me another 5 to figure out how to use finale, to get the assignment to look right. I ended up using Logic's scoring, which was fine, but the benefit of using Finale would have been, all the other students could have downloaded my assignment, and played in in Finale, and heard it exactly as I did it..
    Each subject you take might have a different pre-requisite knowledge.. Some classes really don't much of anything.. Some classes use textbooks, or require CD's, others suggest where you can find free materials to assist with. Most classes you need to do some kind of homework, and upload. Some students had trouble with that and dropped out..
    I would say that Berklee online is an excellent experience... It is EXPENSIVE though. The only fault I could point out is the above, prior knowledge that one might need to know to take a course. In my experience, the administration was a little too lax with that, in order to sell you a course.
    I'm not sure about taking a pro-tools course, and hoping it will give you a lot of knowledge about using cu-base or Logic.. Yes a lot of concepts will 'port over' to another area.

  • Example iTunes U Atom feed?

    Hi
    We’re making arrangements to set up an iTunesU store for our university. We're also building a sql database which will publish our media content through to our CMS and build the web feeds. So I need to ensure the web feeds are compliant with iTunes U.
    I understand that iTunesU will accept rss and atom feeds but that atom is the preferred format because it affords the publisher the option of specifying multiple media types in a single feed item. i.e. in an atom feed you could specify multiple mp3's or an mp3, mp4, m4v etc in a single feed item. Is that correct?
    Also, can you point me to examples of well formed iTunes U atom and rss feeds? Perhaps you have some example feeds on the Apple website?
    Thanks

    As always, standard disclaimers apply, I defer to Duncan for an official reply.
    I would not say that RSS is preferred to Atom necessarily. Rather, the basic consideration for the iTunes U admin is what each of those feeds "maps" to within iTunes U. In iTunes U, an RSS feed can be made to map to a group (that is, a tab within a course). An Atom feed, on the other hand, maps to a whole course and creates groups (tabs) as required by the feed. Often, within a course, you create tabs to match media types ("Video", "Audio", "PDF", etc.). But in principle, and so far as I know, the course-to-Atom feed mapping can be anything that is logical…that "makes sense"…for your site.
    In effect, Atom gives the iTunes U admin a very simple way to automate the creation of a course and link it to a single (Atom) feed. In the past, an admin would first have to create the course, then tabs, then link each tab to a separate RSS feed.
