Forum Settings

Don't know where to post this, as there is no discussion on how to use this forum.
How can I change or create my signature?
How can I bookmark a specific thread?
Is there a way to get notifications on an individual thread, and not select notifications "globally" and get everything I reply to?
Where should I be posting this?

Hi:
Since no one responded , I will try to help
How can I bookmark a specific thread?
Look at the sidebar to the right of the thread. "Bookmark this" is one option.
Is there a way to get notifications on an individual thread, and not select notifications "globally" and get everything I reply to?
Look at the same sidebar.  One option is "receive E-mail notifications."
I know some people use graphic signatures, but I cannot remember how that is accomplished.  You could search the forums.  As I recall, that has been addressed in the past.

  • Forum settings is broken

I am not surprised by how the forum has been going on lately, but to my frustration "Account Update" under "Forum Settings" has been broken for a few weeks now.
What should one do to update some info in there?

You can never have 0 dukes.I can't? Dunno, I hardly spend any.
I'm not trying anything. Someone who's not me tried
to prove a point already stated to someone in Sun's
marketing when they talked about getting that duke
Dollar program back running. Max Duke Earner means
nothing, since you can create 50 accounts and give
yourself all the Dukes you want. It failed utterly in
2002, and it will fail again now. It's worse now. You will get dukes when you are low on dukes.
    "Automatic Reload of Stars
Are your Duke Stars getting low? Now, forum users with a balance of 15 Duke Stars or less will automatically be granted 25 additional Duke Stars. You'll never run out of Duke Stars so keep posting and rewarding others to get your questions answered."

  • Everyone needs to check their Watch List and Forum Settings

Recently Sun's Java and Developer forums were consolidated into a single, large instance of the Jive forums infrastructure. Some users are no longer getting automatic email notifications on topics they have posted to. If your settings in Developer forums differed from settings in Java forums, then some settings may not be what you expect. Log into any forum, then verify your Forum Settings and Watch List options. In the Forum Profile and Settings, make sure your Watch List Preferances are correct, especially the Email My Watches Updates setting. In Your Watch List, make sure each topic has the Email Updates option set correctly.

    Thanks for the info.

  • [SOLVED] Cookie settings for Arch Linux forum

I really do like the Arch Linux forum.
It is fast, plain and simple; perfect for a distro which is the same
But one thing is bothering me; the cookies.
The arch forum is the only forum for me where the 'new post' colored picture at the left side of the forum parts is not unmarked after reading the new posts.
After I have read all new posts, I do 'mark all topics as read' (the link at the right top) to have this result.
For example phpbb forums do have cookie settings where the forums which are read, automatically turn the 'new post' icon off; it is not colored but the normal color again.
Can it be that some forum settings are not completely right and this should be also the case at the Arch forums?
Hope I have explained it that way you can understand what I mean.

Yes, and it has nothing to do with the cookie (except a session).. at least i hope it doesn't cuz that would just make me twice as glad that we switched away from that horrid chunk of code called phpbb.
And on that note, search around a bit, because this has already been explained like three times.

  • How do you find what you posted to the support forum?

Last night I posted a question about Firefox being unable to load certain https URLs, but now I can't find it. I would like to be able to find it to see if anyone has made any helpful replies. In the forum settings, I have the following checkboxes:
    Watch forum threads I start:
Watch forum threads I comment in:
Watch KB discussion threads I start:
Watch KB discussion threads I comment in:
    Send emails for private messages:
All of the above settings are checked, but I can't find where in the interface for these forums I should go to view the threads and comments that I am "watching."
I will bookmark this present support topic so that I can return to it later.
thank you for any help you can provide!

ha ha ha oh my god...
okay, thank you for the help... I see what the problem is... this web site's UI has a shortcoming...
    this URL:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/home
appears to be the home page of the forums... but it is not....
the home page of the forums is buried in a link off to the side in a list labeled "For Contributors"... I mean... by seeking help in the forums, I'm now a "contributor"? ehhh... English... It'd be nice if the UI designers would use it...
the home page to the forums is found via this URL:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions
See... whoever named that URL had the right idea... instead of
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/contributors , the person used:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions
hmmm.... now if the heading on the right said:
    "For people with questions"
then I would have scanned it more closely, and I would have noticed "Support Forum Home" in the list.
I think the fact that so many people use Firefox is really a testament to how bad the other software out there really is, not to how good the Firefox stuff is or how responsive the firefox people are... E.g. is anyone going to actually learn from my above experience, and make the support forums easier to find?
Is anyone going to actually put a link to the forums in the dashboard for the account that is used to log into the forums?
    No, not a chance...
I mean, yes, I get that the link to the forums home page is always in the footer at the right, but come on, for crying out loud... so are stupid advertisements... it's a footer or side bar or whatever you want to call it... people are trained on a subconscious level, by now, to ignore that crap. If you were going to design a forum, would you take the most important links, and put them off to the side, where they are less likely to be noticed?
This is what I see when I bring up my dashboard:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/630258
I mean, if you are a small time developer, with a few thousand users, you probably don't have the time or the resources to make something that's optimal... but when you have millions upon millions of users... optimizing your interface might be worth looking into.... you know... auditing the performance and effectiveness of your UI now and again might be a good idea... You take the few minutes that you waste a user with a confusing counter-intuitive non-standards-based interface, and you multiply that by millions of users, and what can I say... that's a *lot* of waste.
You don't even have an index of forum content... everything is found by searching... Imagine if you walked into a library, and they had NO catalog.. Instead, all books just tossed into a database, and the only way to find anything is by searching. That would be... just incredibly stupid.... That is what this forum interface is.

  • OT: Product and Forum Observations

First off, I think the product is GREAT! This is only version 1.6.1 and the functionality is there to accomplish pretty much anything. With future versions, functionality will improve way past it's current stage.
Next, the support/help on here from the HTML DB development (and management) team is fantastic, compared to what people have come to expect from the MetaLink Forums. Those have degraded to the point that people are now filing TAR's for simple little questions, since they can't get help any other way (maybe because they don't know about other avenues?).
Anyway, the entire HTML DB team, Sergio, Carl, Scott Spadafore, Scott Spendolini, Raj, and all others are to be commended for the time and effort it takes to answer questions on here, especially with all of their other duties like product meetings, development work, white papers, how-to's, marketing, and of course, having a personal life.
Add to this that this a FREE product, and what more could anybody ask for? I get better help and support on here for a FREE product than I usually get for expensive, paid-for products!
This forum could be improved a bit if people would take the time to try and search for an answer to their problem first, before making a posting, and especially by reading the various white papers, how-to's, etc. It really doesn't take that long to go through them. It could also be improved if more of the forum members would respond to others with what they've discovered/come up with, instead of just being selfish and only posting when they have a problem/question.
After all, all of this is FREE and the HTML DB Team does have much more important stuff to do do than answering posts with answers like "Look at this thread" or "Please read this article/how-to/etc."
As a minor suggestion, it would be kind of nice if some of the members would collaborate a bit with their postings and create a how-to type article for others to quickly find. Perhaps something along the lines of the LDAP 'stuff', there seems to be quite a bit of 'curiosity' about that area, amongst others.
Anyway, off my soapbox now. Hope some of the posters will take the time to read this and take it to heart.
    Bill Ferguson

What! The HTML DB team is allowed a personal life!
Thanks for the post Bill. Being an Oracle DBA for many years and being totally HTML illiterate, I did have some reservations with building a new system using HTML.DB. However, I am truly enjoying the product and am VERY THANKFUL for this forum, the contributors and the HTML DB Team.
I read just about every post, so as to learn from the questions that others ask. The questions of others have influenced the way my system works. So, I am thankful for all the questions - not matter how off the wall the questions might be. I encourage others to read the posts regularly.
Yes, "search" often. And when you find a solution for a question that you have asked, please post the solution or a link to the solution. Guaranteed others are going to have the same problem and wouldn't it be great if they could solve the problem with your posting.
I would also would add the comment that you can show your name in this forum (instead of a numeric ID) by clicking on 'Forum Settings' and setting 'Name visible to others' to Yes. It just seems the friendly thing to do, to communicate with a name and not just a number.

  • How can I correct the time on posts to a forum

My posts to the ar15armory show a time 6 hours after I post

Usually in your forum settings, you will find a time zone selector that the forum uses to customize the display.
If that's already correctly set, it's possible there is a glitch on the server.
Anyway, I'm not aware of any way to fix this in Firefox's settings.

  • Change forum screen name

    Hi,
I wasn't sure where to go for this, there doesn't seem to be a "support forum" or any easy way to reach the forum administrators without starting from the top at Sun.
I don't know why my screen name is my name, but I was wondering if there's a way to change it. I have tried the Forum Settings and My Profile, and neither seemed to have an option for it.
    Thanks,
    -Mike

    No, that's not possible.

  • Forum email bombardment!! Any ideas on how to stop?

Any help from anyone would be appreciated. My e-mail account is being bombarded with messages from <[email protected]>. When I check my Watch List , it reads:"Your Email Update option is set to: No Email Updates." and,"You are watching 0 categories , 0 forums , 0 topics in All Categories / All Forums."
So I think I accidentally set up two accounts. I believe the account creating the email was the result of me carelessly clicking on "Watch List" on several messages in an account whose username and password I've forgotten.

Email Sun about it, telling him what email address it
is. You can use the Feedback form (link on the left
under your name, Forum Settings, Watch List, etc.).
They should be able to fix it for you. Thanks, I'll try that. I've got my fingers crossed.
[My reply that looks like the above line but without the original quote was intented for doremifasollatido, also. Still fuzzy on forum posting, etc.]

  • Forums Experiencing Technical Difficulties

As many of you have probably noticed the forums on OTN are experiencing some technical difficulty. The OTN team is working to resolve these outages and performance issues. These issues are to blame for the lack of response to your postings. As things improve I am sure answers will be forthcoming.
If you wish to have your name listed on your postings so they are easier to identify you will need to change your forum settings.

For what it's worth, these errors are generally related to the implementation of patches/enhancements to the forum.
If this forum is being monitored it would be nice to hear from someone from Oracle.Generally there's nobody here but us chickens.
If you want to complain about the availability of this site you ought to post to the [urlhttp://forums.oracle.com/forums/forum.jsp?forum=29]OTN Members Feedback forum. Unfortunately that list tends to get cluttered up with people too lazy, too stupid or too green to post their technical questions to the correct forum. The Members Feedback forum is monitored by Oracle staff but they are not empowered to do anything about the forum's availability.
This is the most frequently non-available site I visit on a regular basis. I have buttonholed various Oracleers at conferences, user groups, etc and made the point that these forums are an advertisement for Oracle's software and development prowess, and so ought to be always up. If even Oracle cannot implement stuff like Edge Side Includes what hope is there for the rest of us? Of course, the ESI errors have gone now: I suspect that's because this site has stopped using them rather than Oracle have got them right ;)
    Cheers, APC

  • Problem with String in JSP! Help Me

    Hi all,
i spent my whole day with this error. How can i solve it. I am trying to convert a string array to Integer array. The program is taking all the select input from the previous JSP page and then converting them into integer array for storing to database. i am catching them as request.getParameterValues(); but i found out that if i select 4 item from the menu it is storing in 8 array cells and the format is if you select 1 2 3 4 the it stores [1 null 2 null 3 null 4 null] i guessed that those are null values. so i have tried to select only 1 2 3 4 from the array and it is showing number format error on tomcat. here is the code guys. • One login for multiple apps?

How easy is it under J2EE to implement applications which share a single login?
Specifically, what I'm implementing are a collection of snap-in applications, which will share the user database to some extent (or at least, a common part of it).. So I might have the following applications and web contexts set up..
    news.ear (/news/)
    forum.ear (/forum/)
    games-dice.ear (/games/dice/)
.. and each of the applications running here would ask something central for the user permissions.
I can't just use a single user database, because I want to separate user information specific to one area (per-area admin priveleges, forum settings) from those which are global for the user (email address, web site).
What I'm thinking at the moment, is in the session (there's one of these for the entire server, regardless of which web application the user is in, right?) I'll store the specific user objects for each individual app under different attributes.
If it doesn't exist, and the global user info doesn't exist either, then I ask the user to login, which will associate in the global info. (How do I get to this global info from another app easily?) If the app-specific info doesn't exist in the session, but the global user info does exist, then I'll look up the username in the list for the current application, and use that to decide whether they're permitted to use that specific application.
It all seems very messy. There must be a better way to do it, right?

    That's a start ..
Actually, my situation is a little simpler than that, because all those peoples' problems dealt with systems where the username/password were different between the different apps. In my case, I was thinking of the case of one username and password for the site, and a separate kind of ForumUser, NewsUser, etc object for each application, backed by a different database, and with no passwords.
So actually, all I really need (I think) is to have each application aware of the global User classes, so they can pull them out of the session and inspect the username, then use that to look up their own *User objects.
It's looking like a bunch of nearly-identical code in each app to do this .. perhaps I'll implement some sort of taglib to take care of it for me.
