Forums Release: Search Improvements

Release Details
As part of our most recent MSDN Forums release, we have delivered on one of the most frequently requested enhancements on MSDN Forums Search - the ability to search for an exact phrase.
You can now search for an exact phrase by surrounding the search phrase in quotes, for example "Windows 8" or "Windows Phone"

    how can you search this forum without searching all the other forums at the same time which is a big fat waste of time.

    Follow this tip to create a bookmark to a search page that searches only the forum you want or...
    Browse with Firefox and enable this Greasemonkey script, which forces all searches from a sub-forum to be local.

  • WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS FORUM'S SEARCH???

    Every time I search for anything in this forum's search field I get 0 results.
    It doesn't matter how broad I make the search category.
    What gives?

    Yup, Adobe's forums are some of the ABSOLUTE worst I've ever come across.
    The search bug is to do with the time limit on age. By default it limits results to those for the past 90 days, except that it's obviously broken as it filters out EVERYTHING. Remove any time filter and you'll get search results.
    Very poor forums, very poor.
    I tried setting the search date from 90 days to All and still got 0 results.

  • Forum bug: search ignors the Category or Forum

    it is already posted, but here again:
    Forum search is useless at the moment because it ignores the Category or Forum to search in.
    Search is always performed in every forum.
    grmpf
    Could you please test your sw before installing it on a production server.
    Sorry but PLEASE do not start again to disturb us with new non working versions like the last time. PLEASE.

    problem still exist

  • Your Flash Forum's "Search" function appears to be broken

    Searching for "8kHz" yielded two results but doesn't show the search result titles or the links to get to the post, though it does show links to the forum itself and the user who posted the result.
    Same results no matter what I searched for, though if I initiate the search initially from the top level Forum, the search results work as expected.

    This is as much your forum as anyone else who visits - being user-to-user forums, Adobe does not monitor these forums.  If you have a comment or issue with the way the forum works (or fails to), you should post in the Forum Comments forum, which is dedicated to dealing with issues about the forums.
    That forum does get some Adobe attention, but Adobe doesn't maintain these forums... they rent them, and apparently went for the lower cost options as far as repairs/maintenance goes (little if any).

    Don't expect much to come from there for the issue you are bringing up... you won't be the first.

  • How to use this forum's search

    Hi
    Is there an easy way to search just this forum? When using the "Search Forums" box at the top right, I get results from all different forums.
    I know I could go into "More options" or whatever its called, spend a minute or two finding the right Forum in the list and select it, hoping I got the right one. Thats not usable at all.
    Whats the better way?

  • Forum-specific search functions don't work

    The search function on this site doesn't seem to work properly. If I try to do a search on a specific forum via the 'Only this forum" function on the right side of the page (which doesn't seem to appear on every forum) or by selecting 'More options' from the search page, I get 0 results. Example - If I search the 'Photoshop' forums specifically, and enter 'Photoshop' into the search criteria, there are no results. I get the same results entering 'Acrobat' into the Acrobat forum, and on any other forum I have tried. It doesn't matter what I type into the criteria, I get 0 results. This happens both on a mac running Safari, as well as on my PC running IE.

    It's not a problem on your system - it's well known here.
    There's an almost perpetual "we're working to try to fix the search" response from the admins.  It's clear they're knocking themselves out to try to make this forum better, but the technical challenges against them just must be horrendous.

  • The discussion forum's search box still has rendering glitches.

    It has been reported several times but is not fixed yet. In Safari 4 the search box is being rendered like this: http://imgur.com/tRAic
    Somebody fix this please! It is very distracting!
    Cheers,
    Behi

    Not if you click on the Discussions link in Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Using Apple Discussions > Feedback about Discussions
    It goes to a page that says "Welcome, Guest" (even though I'm logged in) with s mangled search box.
    This also happens when I click on the Return to Forum link at the top of the thread.

  • Forums Release: January 14, 2014

    Impact
    This release will take place between 3:00-4:00PM PST Jan. 14th. There is no scheduled downtime during this release.
    Release Details
    Updated "My Threads" to display threads which have had reply activity in the last 60 days. This is to reduce the number of errors we have been seeing for users with high thread volumes.
    Additional bug fixes
    Forums Program Manager

    Sometimes the release version has a later build number than the last beta we received, which in a way can be even worse than if the build is the same. The thing that has caused some confusion is that a few posts here have been answered with "we've fixed that and it will be in the next build", and the next build turned out to be the same as the previous build.
    So, I think the truth is that those things are fixed in the next build that appears on labs, and the release one doesn't count as a new beta build. I don't know when the next labs build will be.

  • Does anyone think this forum is an improvement?

    The previous webforum/NNTP interface had roughly 90 percent of the questions coming from the webforum, and 90 percent of the mostly correct replies coming from the NNTP newgroup users.
    The newsgroup users are for the most part NOT going to use this web forum.
    so for the most part- there are 50 or 100 people who tried to offer help daily, who are not "in here" and won't participate because this web forum interface is just slow and clunky and flashy. We just want TEXT. NNTP. WORDS.
    I've been ACE and TMM longer than i can remember. Not renewing.

    Completely wrong. Although NNTP access has been removed, it's perfectly possible to do everything through email or an RSS feed. I'm monitoring several forums through email, which displays no icons, avatars, or images.
    One does not require an icon, avatar, or image to receive an indication that a topic has been resolved.  The same information could be passed through text.  Is it not?  :smile
    In any case this diverges from the question of measuring this forum's success.
    The question of whether an issue has been "resolved" is also moot. An inexperienced person is quite likely to mark a question as "answered", even if the answer is wrong, incomplete, or no longer represents best practice.
    The last time I posted in this regard it was in response to how one might measure success in this forum.  Within this context I would much prefer a measure of consumer satisfaction over the "crude" measure of noise that you have suggested.
    Moreover, once a question has been marked as "answered", the setting cannot be changed.
    Obviously a weakness in the system, but still a better indicator of success than your proposed measure of noise.
    Things are not quite so clear cut as you seem to think.
    If you ever knew how I thought, then communication between us would not be so difficult.  Once again, your thoughts with regard to the vertical centering of text in a floated <span> tag would be greatly appreciated.  Just do not provide them here, as this is not where I posed the original question.

  • Array Search Improvement

    I am just starting to learn Java and things are coming a long nicely. In a recent project I needed to delare an array of 10 objects (accounts) search through them and return one of them to be modified like a bank account with deposits and withdrawls etc. etc. I figured one solution and it worked, Yeah!. But I am not sure it was the best solution, i did get a pretty good grade and I was happy. Below is my code and I was hoping to see if there was a better or more desired way to do what I have done. I just put in a snipet of the object array and can post more if needed. Basically i was wondering if this was the best way to declare the arrray. I tried to do it with something like originally;
    String [][] account = {{abc, abc, abc, abc}
    {abc, abc, abc, abc}};
    But that didn't work.
    Assumptions: All data was initalitezed in a user class constructor. All maniputlation of data exisists in method account[j].print();
    So i ended up with
    User[] account = new User [10];
              account[0] = new User (null, null, null, null);
              account[1] = new User (null, null, null, null);
              account[2] = new User (null, null, null, null);
              account[3] = new User (null, null, null, null);
              account[4] = new User (null, null, null, null);
              account[5] = new User ("1000","Pat", "Roberts", "Premier");
              account[6] = new User ("2000", "Andy", "Garcia", "Regular");
              account[7] = new User ("3000", "Debby", "Dupont", "Regular");
              account[8] = new User ("4000", "Ramon", "Spaulding","Regular");
              account[9] = new User ("5000", "Becky", "Dunow", "Regular");
              for (int i=0; i<5; i++ )
                   System.out.print("Enter your account number:");
                   Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
                   String accountNumber = input.nextLine();
                   for (int j=0; j< account.length; j++)
                        if (accountNumber.equals(account[j].getAccountNumber())) account[j].print();

    What you have is good, but as mentioned earlier, adding a break in there would be good, so the for loop doesn't keep going after it finds the account.
    You could hash this, but that's outside the scope of the assignment, and since you only have to worry about 10 accounts, it's going to be fast no matter what. You could also do a binary search, but again, that's outside the scope of the assignment, and with 10 accounts it's going to be quick even if it has to iterate 10 times.
    If you are really eager and want to learn about searching efficiency, look up some information on hashing and binary search.

  • Dear Oracle: PLEASE improve the SEARCH on these forums!!!

    Subject: Dear Oracle: PLEASE improve the SEARCH on these forums!!!
    I have been getting frustrated using the search on these forums. I find the content very useful (especially as I cannot seem to find any other forums for Oracle Portal) but the search facility is very poor.
    Firstly, the Search will on search for an exact match in the body of the messages, not the subject at all! This is very annoying as people usually sum-up there question in the subject and often do not repeat the subject in the message.
    Secondly, the search looks for exact matches of your search string, so searching for more than one word become difficult. Bascially, it does only an exact match, not a word search, so forget about using keywords to search on as you would do in every other search engine and be very carful of the order of your words, you'll get a completly different set of results by swaping the order of your words... :(
    eg. Selecting "ALL FORUMS", try searching for "Customizing Change Password Page". no hits? ok try "Customizing Password" still no hits? ok try "Customizing the Password". still no hits? ok just try "customizing". You get 10 Pages of 20 (Oracle conviently puts them over 10 pages so you cannot view them all on a html page and do your own secondary search using CTRL-F). Well, this is too many, lets just try "Change Password". again 20 x 10+ pages. At least this time we've got some that also have the work customizing in the subject. If only we got here on the first search... Don't even think of adding the word "PDK" or "Example" to your search...
    I have already provided feedback to Oracle on this matter (and am still waiting for a reply). If you would also like the search improved, please also send Oracle some feedback and make this forum more useful. If enough people pester them they might think it's important enought to change. link below:
    http://otn.oracle.com/contact/htdocs/feedback.htm
    Cheers,
    Tim.
    P.S. In the meantime, does anyone know of any other good Portal forums?

    Couldn't agree more, if only the search was as good as on Metalink...

  • Where is the 'Search Acrobat Windows Forum' button?

    I've largely dropped out of this forum since it changed format (no particular reason, I can see the improvements, but it just seemed to take a bit more time to review and do things), so maybe I'm being dense with my subject line?  The first thing I usually want to do when I enter a forum is search for a topic that may answer my question already, but all I see are options to search Adobe globally (no thanks) or all forums (no, I'm in the Acrobat forum because I have an Acrobat question).  Once I've returned a list that uselessly includes all forums I get a new Search bar and a dropdown list of Adobe applications, so then I can narrow it down, but I've already used my daily allocation of mouse clicks and am losing interest. Am I missing something?

    Bon dias,
    You are at "top" of Acrobat Windows Forum.
    Enter a string in the Search field.
    Click the button at the right.
    Wait a moment.
    Search returns are presented from all Forums.
    Click "More options" (under Search for: <you query string>
    Observe the "Where" List.
    Select Acrobat Windows (nested under Acrobat) - this is the third line item from the top.
    If desired - provide a "When" &/or a "Who" filter.
    Click the Search button again.
    Search Results are listed for your query string from the Acrobat Windows Forum.
    Retain the list by opening a new Tab in your browser when viewing a result.
    Review the Search Tips to learn more about what is available with this particular search engine.
    While search engines share many features in common, often they do no process the feature exactly the same.
    In sum - rather adequate search of specific forums is available.
    We might natter about the user interface but for most queries, the forum search is adequate.
    Be well...

  • Why can I no longer search a specific forum?

    It doesn't seem that long ago that one could drill down in the technical discussion forums and then search a specific forum.  Now, all I can see is that, no matter what forum I navigate to, I can only enter search terms for the entire "community".  99.9% of the time I really don't give a s__t about iPads and iPods, yet answers regarding them are always in the top results.  Put another way, how can I specifically search Using Mac OS 10.7 Lion for answers?

    Once you get the search screen up you restrict the forum to search and/or the person:
    Unfortunately to get this window you have to do the first search from the search communities box. What I do if I know I will  be restricting to one community is do an empty search which brings up the above window, then I enter the search term, the community and the person then search.]
    It would be nice of you could just get these options right from the get-go but at least there is a way.
    regards

  • Preloading of next webpages (in forums, search results...)

    Hello all
    I was wondering if it's possible to enable the "preloading" of next webpages when reading at forums or search results. I find this functionality which allows to just scroll down the page instead of clicking on the "next" button very convenient on the mac version of safari.
    Thanks

    @Ken: Good find! I didn't look into the code in detail.
    @potzki: No, your markup for sitemap seems fine. But like Ken said, the image is not available on the server. Also, do note that the sitemap is only an 'indicator' for Google and will help Google in understanding how your site is laid out - since it is you, the sitemaster, that creates the sitemap and pushes it to Google. But, it's not end of the road for Google. It will cache other areas of your site - unless you've explicitly told Google not to using robots.txt file.
    One more observation - your domain name is like way tooooooo long - forget google, for regular people to type into. Is there a specific reason you chose this one rather than a short, concise one?
