FotoMagico to FCP

Hi everybody,
Please can any FotoMagico user tell me what export presets they use in FotoMagico for use in FCP.
I currently have FotoMagico Express edition and use the export to DVD preset. However, when importing to FCP the quality is really poor. I have achieved much better results key framing in FCP but it takes me forever and doesn't ease in or out as smoothly.
I really appreciate how easy to use Fotomagico is in comparison and am now wondering if upgrading to Pro would make any difference to the quality.
Many thanks.

Hi David, thanks for the reply.
I am a real novice when it comes to all of this. I have Express but I'm afraid I don't see the 'export to QT and MPEG4' feature.
Before buying Express, I checked the Express vs Pro comparison page which clearly states that Express does export to both QT and MPEG4 as a separate preset. I was really disappointed then when I bought Express and discovered the only presets available for export are:
Standalone Player
DVD
Web Movie
YouTube video
iPod Movie
iPhone Movie
AppleTV Movie
Screen Saver.
Within these presets there is very little if any customization.
Up until now I have selected DVD and imported the resulting dv file into FCP but the quality is very poor and I'm wondering if Pro would be any different.
Thanks again.
Best wishes.

  • Fotomagico into FCP

Fotomagico boards are rare and very few topics on FCP integration so I thought I'd try here.
Here's the problem. I've made a slideshow of 18 slides. When I import into FCP and drop in the timeline I first off have to drag the clip on both ends to resize. Not sure if it's supposed to be like that. Then I only get 13 of the slides then it cuts off. If I slow it down in the controls and drag more I get all the slides but their half the original duration. If I slow it more to lengthen the duration the slide length stays the same but I get extra black at the end to cmpensate for more time.
Is David S. out there? He seems to know this app pretty good.
    Thanks.

    Good luck then.
I just save the project file, and then amend as needed.
But my goal is production of content. I'm interested in creating it without issues.
If I need to edit the content, I just go back to the project file, make the edit, and export.
I'm not a "bells and whistles" person, and I am not saying you are. I need to get things done, and this way is an editing best procedures for me.
I don't have to understand the generator part, because I don't use it, find no need for it, preferring the smoothest path to getting things done.
Can't help you with your workflow, because I don't use it.

  • FotoMagico Codec For FCP

    Hey Y'all,
I have been reading the boards about Slideshows and it seems that many recommend FotoMagico.
I played with it for a few hours and decided it was pretty good and now I have purchased it.
My question is, what timeline preset should I use for the best quality, if I will be compressing it and sending it to DVD?
Thank you so much for any help.
    Susan

If I remember correctly, ProRes422 (LT), aka ProRes LT, was introduced with FCP7.
If you are running FCP6, the best choice is regular ol' ProRes422 - not ProRes (HQ)

  • Using still image in FCP and Motion

I'm using still images in Motion (and FCP) and exporting them to Quicktime movie files. What's the best size and resolution for the images and are JPGs or TIF best? I'm exporting for 720 X 480, and currently my JPGs are 4 x 6 at 300 dpi with a pixel width and height of 1312 x 2000. I'm adding some behaviors to the images in Motion (motion paths and shrink/grow).
My FCP project is setup as a DV NTSC 48kHz, 720 x 480, editing timebase=59.94, timecode Rate=same as editing timebase, compressor-DV/DVPRO-NTSC, quality 100%.
When I export to Quicktime the movies are very low quality--lots of noise and moire pattern etc.
How do I get the best qualtiy using still images? Is it my FPS setting, image pixel size, compressor setting? Also, do the movies need to be deinterlaced?
The preview in the FCP browser and canvas looks a little better but I do notice noise (moire patterns) along the sharp edges of the still images.
I've seen QT movies of these very same images (done by someone else who is no longer around) and they are much better quality.
Does anyone have an appropriate workflow for this type of project? The final movies are to be shown on a flatscreen monitor from a local computer, so the file sizes can be relatively large (300mb).
I can post an example of he movie files if that might help.
    Thanks.

David, your a genius!!! You posted your reply on my birthday, and I missed it until today!
Fotomagico is devastatingly easy to use and absolutely makes me want to cry at the amount of time I wasted creating photo slideshows in FCP!
I opened Fotomagico up and created a slideshow, one that I had already created in FCP and had take me FIVE HOURS to create... in TEN MINUTES!!!!!!!!! Aaaaaaaaah.
I couldn't believe it. I thought there had to be a catch or something. This was too easy the quality can't be there... but it was. It's amazing and I can't thank you enough for all the future hours you have saved for me.

  • What are the recommended optimum import settings for pictures into FCP

I'm using FCS 7.0 and about to start a project / slideshow with about 700-900 pictures. The images are currently slides but will be converted into digital images. What would be the recommended settings / format to have the pictures converted into digital images for Final Cut? Also, any advice on the sequence / timeline settings as well would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Look at this first...it's designed for stills...and when you're done you can export it for use in FCP

  • Would like to see if can do this in FCP

Hello - a friend of a friend did this photo montage, but do not know what program it was. Does anyone know how this can be done? And if/how it can be done in FCP? I like the 'photo album' effect here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFGkSmdYcaY. Thanks so much!

    Hi -
It certainly could be done in FCP, just lots of planning and work when you do the multi-image composites.
You may want to look at a 3rd party app that does all the heavy lifting for you and the lets you output as a quicktime movie -
    Check out
    http://www.aquafadas.com/en/pulpmotion/
    or
    http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/overview/
I have seen Fotomagico often highly recommended on this forum.
I personally use Pulpmotion Advanced which is pricey but has the controls to really let you fine tune the slideshow.
Using one of these apps really expedites the process of building a photo montage.
    Hope this helps.

  • Using Still Photos in FCP

    Hey everyone,
I'm working on a project in FCP, which is made up entirely of still images (jpgs) shot using my Canon 40D. I'm doing some panning and zooming (Ken Burns like), as well as some rapid stop motion animation sequences and compositing. I'm using a lot of photos!
I've been doing some tests and FCP is chugging hardcore, not to mention the brutal render times and everytime I move or copy something it has to prepare the display. I NEED to make this process run smoother!
I would like the final product to be HD and 16x9, but do you guys/gals think that I will need to go to SD because of the limitations of my computer (iMac intel core duo with 2gb of ram)?
    In your opinion:
    1. What sequence settings should I use to get the best FCP performance for this project? Would you recommend a particular editing time base?
    2. Will resizing my photos make FCP work much quicker?
    3. Are there any system settings in Final Cut that I should tinker with? Presently my Memory and Cache Settings are:
    Memory Usage 100% 1818mb
    Application 10% 167mb
    Thumbnail Cache Disk 8192k
Ram 512k (<---should this be 2gb, now that I have 2gbs of Ram installed)
Thank you guys/gals so much! You rule! I love you.

  • Export to FotoMagico

Exporting photos to FotoMagico using the Plug-In doesn't transfer the photos. Viewing Activity Monitor, only step one is completed and the transfer never gets to steps two (Creating Slideshow) and three. I must export to desktop and drag photos into FotoMagico. Some folders are created Macintosh HD>private>var>folders>hk>hk with string of number/letters>-Tmp->Export FM Slideshow.

  • Unable to capture in FCP 6, HELP!

Trying to capture dvx100 footage using FCP 6(studio2) with no luck.
When initiating log and capture, I can control my camera via FW, but preview is disabled as well as
    ability to capture footage.
I have tried deleting pref's, deleting QT prefs, triple checked settings (NTSC DV), tried variations of
turning camera off/on during opening of FCP as well as using alternate ports.
I'm at a loss. Can anyone help!!?!?!
    - Need to cut something asap.
    Thanks.

Thank you Patrick. You have helped me before, so thanks again.
I do not have anything else connected to the firewire ports. I have an external hard drive, but I have tried to capture with and without the hard drive attached. I did recently back up using Carbon Copy Cloner to another hard drive, if anyone thinks this may be the issue.
I can't recall the exact error message in FCP (I have deleted the program trying to fix the issue, and focus on the capture problem in Quicktime thinking that if Quicktime and iMovie both don't capture, that the problem is not with FCP, but either with the OS or the back end of QT) I can re-install FCP to give you the exact FCP error message if you would like me too. Ie, if the exact error message is necessary.
    Thanks again for your response.

  • Unable to capture HDV footage with FCP 5.1

I've captured HD footage onto my old computer (10.4.11) without any problem but now I'm trying on my new one and it doesn't want to know.
First off there was a problem with the Firewire port ejecting my hard drives randomly so I took it to be repaired and they replaced the logic board and the port works fine.
I've looked at all the posts I could find, I've trashed my preferences, reinstalled Final Cut Studio ( after uninstalling then updating the software). I've made sure the camera is set to HDV playback rather than auto and that the iLink HDV/DV conversion is off. I've tried all the easy setups and all the custom ones I could think of but still FCP (5.1.4) won't allow me to capture. On some settings I have had device control but no image, on others it said the camera isn't connected. The only way I've captured footage is by using the HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 which works fine.
The camera is a Sony HDR-HC7 connected directly to the iMac with a Firewire 800 / iLink cable or daisy chained through my external hard drive with a 400 / iLink cable (neither of which makes any difference) I can also capture SD footage from both the HDV and a Panasonic SD camera when in DV-PAL setup. The HDV camera also shows up as connected in the system profiler.
This is driving me nuts so any help would be appreciated and if there's any other info I can help with to make this clearer let me know.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Unable to capture HDV in FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVR-Z1P

Hi I'm attempting to capture HDV footage from a Sony Z1.
I am trying to capture some HDV footage I shot with the Z1, but FCP simply refuses to recognize the Z1
I'm certain I've got all the settings correct:
    - Camera is set to HDV firewire out
    - capture presets is set to HDV
    - device control preset is set to Sony HDV FireWire
    - sequence preset is set to HDV 1080i50 (I'm in Australia)
    - footage IS HDV 1080i50
But I keep getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device and Device Control" popup. I've tried everything
    - rebooted the camera
    - restarted FCP
    - rebooted the system
    - changed the capture/device control settings in FCP and tried out a regular DV deck to make sure it wasn't the cable
    Nothing has worked.
I'm on a MBPro I7. No Kona card or anything like that, just trying to capture through firewire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Matt
At present it will capture HDV in IMovie but not FCP 6.0.1

Thanks Adrian, since posting the thread I've thought of that too but unfortunately to no avail. From other forums I've read this seems to be a central theme to the solution to my capture woes. I since have sorted the problem it was in Audio/Video Settings.
In the end I set my Audio/Video Settings to:
Sequence Preset to: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Capture Pre-HDV- Apple intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
And hey presto my I'm capturing HD without any problems. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie, camera not recognized.

I am unable to capture in FCP, Quicktime and iMovie.
I have been dealing with this problem for quite a while now, and I think I have tried everything posted on these forums regarding this issue. I have been to the Quicktime, iMovie, and this FCP forum looking for the solution. Hopefully someone has a suggestion that I have missed or have not tried yet. I have a Powerbook G4 running OSX Tiger 10.4. I am running Quicktime 7.04, and FCP 4.5.
My problem is this… I am unable to capture from my Canon ZR-200 Mini DV camera, using Final Cut Pro, iMovie and also Quicktime. FCP says no camera recognized. iMovie says no camera attached, and Quicktime says no recording device found. In FCP, I am using the Firewire Basic setting, and NTSC DV settings. I have captured in FCP with the same camera several times in the past. I think the problem started when I upgraded to OSX 10.4, or one of the Quicktime upgrades.
    Here are the details…
    - Camera is connect via Firewire. I have tried the built in ports, as well as a Firewire Carbus card.
    - OSX recognizes the Canon ZR-200 in the System Profiler, so I know the computer sees the camera.
    - I have tried the camera on a Windows XP machine, and capture works perfectly, so I know the camera is functioning properly in VTR mode.
    - Deleted my FCP pref’s using FCP Rescue.
    - Deleted the Quicktime receipts, and re-installed Quicktime 7.04
    - Reverted back to Quicktime 7.01
    - Set the audio to 44.1 in the the Audio MIDI setup in the Utilities folder
    - Tried the “GarageBand” fix, opening the programing, playing a few notes and closing.
    - I have installed Quicktime using the program “Yank” to completely delete Quicktime and re-install.
I may have tried more solutions, but these are the fixes that I can recall.
If anyone has any others suggestions, it would be much appreciated.
    Brent

    Hi Brent:
Although it looks as if you have tried all of the 'fixes' that are normally suggested here, please read through this Apple Article to see if some obscure thing applies to you.

  • FCP & CRT Video Monitors with 24" iMac

I am considering the purchase of a 24" iMac with the optional 7600GT video card for video editing. I have read that the $19 Apple "Mini-DVI to Video Adapter" will give me audio and SVGA outputs to connect to a TV/CRT monitor. But I have read many user comments that claim the LCD display in the iMac suddenly changes resolutions when this Mini-DVI adapter is plugged into the iMac. But those comments don't say if it happens to every iMac (including the new 24") or just to older iMacs. I also wonder if the 7600GT video card makes any difference.
My intention is to edit video in FCP on this 24" iMac and I wish to view full resolution standard video on a CRT video monitor. But I would prefer it if the resolution of the iMac screen didn't change while I view the video on the CRT monitor. I want to see the iMac display at full resolution and the CRT video monitor at its full resolution, at the same time. Is this possible with a 24" iMac that has the 7600GT video card? Or am I forced to get a more expensive Mac Pro system to accomplish this feat?
    Many thanks.

As Zeb pointed out, your method is NOT the way to properly view FCP's output on an external TV monitor. To do it the right way, you'll first need to determine which video formats you'll be working with; all DV25 formats can be monitored via the Firewire output through a qualified DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter). All other formats will require the addition of a dedicated card, such as those offered by Kona and Decklink, or a box like the MXO by Matrox.

  • How many times can you install FCP?

Hello everyone, new to the forums here. I've searched throught he forums but couldnt find an answer to my question.
I'm in the middle of installing Final Cut Studio 2 (waiting to put in the next disc) when my buddy came over and mentioned that you could only install FCP one time and never install it again on any other computer. This worries me because in January I was going to get a new Mac Pro and un-install FC from my Macbook Pro so I could use it on the new computer. Is this possible? Or once I install this on my laptop is it permanent?
Thanks in advance for the help

Ok so you can install it on as many machines as you like but can only use (or have one activated through registering) one at a time. I know this is a touchy subject with piracy and all, but I thought it would just be rediculous if I installed this on my laptop, and 6 months down the line wanted to install it on another computer that I own.

  • DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?
    Thanks all,
    Best wishes
    Michael

    Hi Thomas, that's it!
Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?
Thanks again for the answer - and so quick on a Sunday too!
    Kind regards
