Found a Mac Pro in the trash, missing harddrive and video card. Can I fix?

I believe this is a Mac Pro G5 (Aluminum casing). It is missing a harddrive and video card. I want to fix it. I plugged it in and turned it on and I see a red light coming from the front, not sure if that means its broken or just missing a videocard/harddrive.
Is there a way I can tell if I will be able to fix this machine before buying parts? When i turn it on, it makes the OSX noise the same as when I turn my laptop on.
THanks!

Can you fix it? No, I think you should mail it to me
The best way is to see if you can find a cheap video card - craigslist, ebay, borrow from someone else local to you (computer club or users group?)
As for hard drives, since you can boot of an external firewire drive - you have lots of options.
The video card is obviously your biggest issue. Since you apparently get the "Welcome to Mac" startup chime it doesn't sound like their is a major issue with it.
Now, even if you get it working, what are you going to do with it? The G5 was good for it's day, but for the amount of electricity it consumes, it's not the best out there - the new Mini is probably faster than it and consumes a fraction of the power.
Then again, you got it for free and can probably get a video card for under $100 - cheaper than a Mini and if you live in cold climate the extra heat it generates could be a net positive

  • Mac Pro 2009 - the base is uneven and "wobbles"

I just picked up a new 8-Core Mac Pro. I have a glass desktop table. Upon setting the Mac Pro on top of it, the unit "wobbles" I know the glass desktop is even and flat. From what I can tell the front right side and rear left (if looking from the front of the unit) are to blame. When flipping the unit on its side I can see the rubber "sliders" or "cushioned feet" are present. The question is, should I try to fix it myself with some type of "hack" or exchange it?
    Thanks!

Try and see if they will fix it for you. You paid for that warranty, why not try to use it first. It is expensive to replace the cabinet, so I expect everyone will try to straighten it out. They may have straightened out a ton of them.
They may tell you it is shipping damage, and you should make a claim against the shipper, but it is their shipper, and they have much more sway with the shipper than you do. So they should at least help you with that.
I was surprised when my son's MacBook refused to load CDs. They told me that the MacBook frame was bent, and that they had a tool to straighten them out, which they had done, no charge. Oh, and by the way, try not to pick it up one handed by the corner.

  • Mac Pro (early 2008-3.0) which replacement video card

I am fairly certain that my Video Card has died. I purchased my Mac Pro in June of 2008 and my config is MAC PRO/3.0_8CX/2X16/880GT/320/2XSD/AP/M/K. Based on other posts I've read, it appears as though Apple does not build Graphic Cards very well. If possible, I'd like to replace the 8800GT (512 MB of GDDR3) with a card with 1GB of memory (but NOT the $1500 unit). But I get very confusing answers when I'm shopping for a card. For example, cards at MacMall listed as "Universal" platform (as opposed to PC) look great, but when I verified with the (sales) rep that it was Mac compatible, I was told no and then she tried to sell me the $1500 unit. Will OSX Leopard or Snow Leopard drive any card that needs PCI Express 2.0 16X? Could somebody suggest a good replacement card? I'm trying to keep it under $500. Thanks in advance for any help.

Whoever writes the hardware requirements should be fired. If it req'd that only the latest logicboards could use it, ATI would be in a world of hurt.
And if you look at Barefeats you will see that bandwidth matters.
They should say what is minimum requirement. And get a background in technical writing, they have graduate programs. And when the specs fit reality people will have some faith and rely on it. As it is, everything has to be with grain of salt or just throw it out and ignore it.
What it does need is a newer set of drivers, and that I'd like to see in a standalone package... included with the card, and maybe even untethered from Snow Leopard so people could buy and use it on Leopard too. Or not have to wait for the next OS update to come out for decent drivers. Some think we'll see firmware update for these cards. New chipset errata. By which time ATI hopes to start showing its 6770, 6870 and 6970s.

  • Syncing my iPad to my formatted Mac Pro. I just need photos and videos sync.

I always synced my iPad to my Mac Pro. Recently I installed an SSD and therefore I did a new install of Lion. The only things I want so sync are Movies (I made with iMovie) an Photos. I don't need the apps on my mac since I can re-download them from the iCloud.
I activated this new Install of Lion for my Apple ID / iPad and I am able to sync Photos with iPad. But whenever I check the Box for Syncing Movies I get the notice that all my data will be deleted from the device.
So will everything be deleted as soon I click OK and click Sync? I read somewhere that only movies and music will be deleted. But I want to keep all Settings and Games with their settings.
Hope there is an easy solution for this
Thank you in Advance for any advice!
P.S.: I still have my Hard Drive with my old Lion installation flying around. I waited to format it and use it for Time-Machine until I knew that I copied all of files I need to the new Hard Drive.
P.S.S: I read the other day that since the newest Version of iTunes someone doesnt have to sync all the apps from iPad to mac...

  • Mac Pro having lots of lock up and crashing trouble

    Hi,
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been misbehaving for a while now in various ways. Now it is completely out of hand!
I was having some serious waking from sleep issues in the past and after performing a bunch of maintenance they got better (although they never disappeared completely). Now I am having a lot of trouble with the computer locking up. Usually within 10 minutes of waking from sleep, everything freezes. I can still move the mouse, and the computer will go into (and wake from) a monitor sleep but nothing on the screen is responsive.
Also, when waking from sleep, the screen goes blue for a few seconds before giving me the normal screen. Here is a copy of the console report from its most recent wake:

    Hi-
Looking through your log, I noticed the system is having problems with some M-Audio drivers.

Old drivers, outdated drivers and incompatible drivers can cause sleep problems.
If you are not using any M-audio devices, I would remove the files.
If you are, you should check for updates, and still should remove the offending files.
If you migrated your user files from a previous system, say from a PPC system, these can cause problems.
Start by running in safe mode, and see if the machine sleeps and wakes as it should.
Troubleshoot your Startup and Login items as described in this article:

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB.  Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully?  I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible.  Is this correct?

Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not  days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization.

  • From iMac to Mac Pro for the good of my Pro Tools 10...

    hey guys,
here's the deal : it seems I'm at a turning point with my iMac (27", 3.1 Ghz i5, 4GB memory, 1TB hard drive, lion, PT10) and I'm thinking of buying a mac pro. Problem is, I'm not sure which model is best for my needs. I do postproduction work for television and I often have to work with pretty heavy projects.
My pro tools 10 keeps giving me the same 2 errors --
1- DAE can't get audio from the drive(s) fast enough. Your drive may be too slow, or fragmented, or a firewire drive could be having trouble due to the extra firewire bandwidth or cpu load. (-9073)
2- A CPU overload error occurred. If this happens often, try increasing the "H/W Buffer Size" in the Playback Engine Dialog, or removing some plug-ins. (-6101)
I might add, my Playback Engine's maxed out and I'm barely running any plugins (some 5 or 6 EQ3s, maybe 1 or 2 L2 and a Dorrough).
I have a MOTU Audio Express which is plugged in firewire and I'm running an external drive with my SFX on it, which is also plugged in firewire. The iMac having only one firewire plug (downsizing from the earlier iMac, for some obscure reason), I have a firewire hub.
I get the first error whenever I get too deep into a project and I start having a lot of SFX and I'm looking to add more and I get the second error whenever I try to run Dolby Media Meter.
I'm pretty aware I'm overrunning my iMac, so I'm willing to pay big bucks to get a computer that's best fitted to my needs and which I'll be able to upgrade every once in a while. Now, I'm just wondering what I actually need in a computer.
It's either the 3.2 GHz quad-core intel xeon, 6GB memory, 1TB HD or the two 2.4GHz 6-core intel zeon, 12GB memory, 1TB HD. I gotta say the second one seems kind of a lot... but I don't want to spend so much money and get a tiny upgrade from where I'm at right now.
So please! All of you mac wizards and other knowledgeable folks, HELP!

An i7 3.9GHz would do if you had 32GB RAM, an SSD boot drive, and 2TB hdd.
The sweet spot today on Mac Pro is $1800 4-core special and DIY to W3690 or W3680 6-core 3.33 or higher with 32-48GB RAM. And lots of SSDs and disk drives.

The Mac Pro line is at a - not ready to ship the new 2013 6,1 model / not ready with 10.9 that it will need / and current configuration is really 2010 3 yrs old (but also how well they hold up and mature).
You do not want to give up GHz for more cores. MHz still rules. Only reason would be if you planned to replace the processors for the fastest expensive (use to be, though changing) 4 or 6-core 3.4GHz for total of 8 or 12-cores, but never the 2.4GHz, no way.
The 2009 4,1 used is cheaper and can be found for $1000 and upgraded to 6-core and everything else (dual core upgrades are harder and not good to plan for.
And http://www.barefeats.com has done some tests on iMac and Mac Pro.
Graphics on Mac Pro, RAM and PCIe and SSD, hdd are easy upgrades.

  • On startup Mac Pro I get a blue screen and a cursor on the upper left. The mouse cursor shows up independently. Is it likely a video card failure?

On startup Mac Pro I get a blue screen and a cursor on the upper left. The mouse cursor shows up independently. Is it likely a video card failure?

I managed to boot the computer and get the desktop to show. I now have a "repaired" computer. There are several problems that have cropped up. One is that I can only start up now in Safe Boot mode. Is there a way to turn it off? Also, I do not have a sound list, so I can't access anything requiring audio. Google Chrome only shows up as a white screen. Pictures that loaded before don't load in browsers, etc. Any suggestions? I figure I should reinstall Mac OS Lion for starts, maybe even do a mirror backup and reformat the drive. I think this drive has turned into scrambled eggs...what a headache!

  • I cannot change song order on playlist with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column( up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4.

I cannot change song order on playlists (old or new) with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column (up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4. I can't drag and drop "music" to "playlist" but can right click and get the option to "add to playlist." No such option for moving song within playlist, only the up and down arrow which moves song from top to bottom list, so if it is #4 from top it will move to #4 from bottom. Stupid I know. I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

  • Is there a way to keep my Mac Pro On the network without sleeping???

i'll try to explain this the best way I can. I often wish to access my Mac Pro over the network either for file sharing, or for use with Apple Remote Desktop. The problem is after about 20-30 minutes, the Mac Pro sleeps and disappears from the network. Is there a way to keep it on the network without turnig off sleep mode? I really don't want the hard drives working 24/7 if possible....
    Thanks in advance!
    JPT
P.S. I'm sure it doesn't matter, but just in case..I'm using the new Apple Airport Extreme base station.

In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, check the 'Wake for Ethernet network administrator access' checkbox under the Options tab, and then use an application such as this one to send it the signal.

I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.

Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk.  Duh!  The application for the home is in the mail.

Are you sure that the "On My Mac" folders weren't empty? If all your mail accounts are IMAP, they may have been.

I want to upgrade my 2008 Mac pro to the latest one, will it meet the requirement for the future Software that's coming out for the next four years?.

I'd wait. What can't you do that you need? You mean you want to buy a new model, then why not wait for an actual new one, not the two year old 5,1, when you need to and have outgrown.
Yours will run Mountain Lion. yours is 4 yrs old and still supported and has life left.

You have to use get a 3rd party video converter like WinAvi.
Google video->ipod converters, and you will get a list.
