Found a major flaw with Apple Configurator 1.4

I have just upgraded to the new version on my personal machine to give it a test and found a problem when managing apps on an iPad. In the previous version I was able to upgrade an app on the device to a new or previous version without removing any of the documents within the app.
In version 1.4 it seems this isn't possible. The only way to change the app version is to manually delete the app from the IPad directly and then use configurator to put the required version on. This wouldn't be so much of a problem if the documents contained in the app weren't 3/4GB in size.
This seems like a huge step backwards. Replacing an app version on 10 devices took 20 seconds in the previous version and now it's likely to take 25 minutes or more. Not very conveient when you have to change it on 135 iPads. I certainly won't be updating Configurator on the rest of my machines.
If someone has the same problem and has fiound a workaround, please share. Otherwise I would hope that a fix to this issue will be implemented in an update.

Hi Dan,
A fellow Configurator user just posted this to collect a list of issues with AC v1.4

We will all be adding to the list.

  • How can I import photos from iPod that is supervised with Apple Configurator?

I have configured a set of iPod Touches (and iPads) with Apple Configurator. User can take photos. But when the iPods are attached to a PC or Mac (including the Mac they were configured on), no pictures are visible or downloadable. The photos are visible in the Photos app on the iPod. What's happening?

    Anthony,
I have found a workaround that just worked for me with iPads,
Connect the iPad to the computer that supervises it, take screen shots (home key and off key pressed together) of the photos as they are displayed in Photos on your iPad and then they will be seen when you launch iPhoto on the host computer.
It takes some time, but may be worth it, I just took screen shots of about 70 photos and they are now in iPhoto so I can export them now and use them.
    It took me 15 minutes.
    Hope this helps, Darryl

  • Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up?

Is there a major flaw with Iphoto in regards to organizing and backing up? And how should I proceed??
Here is my story. I have moved roughly 15,000 photos from 7 computers (4 PCs and 3 Macs - basically everyone's computer in the family) onto one external hard drive. The photos were taken by many different digital cameras, are sparsely labeled, and have the most random names and folders. There are a LOT of duplicates. MY MISSION - label and back them up.
The way I normally deal with photos/DATA is this: I plug my camera into my Mac and immediately think about organizing and backing them up. With "Preview" I look at photos (and decide which one I like), create a folder called "where-ever I took these photos" and drag them into that folder. The problem with Iphoto is that you have no ability to control folders, unlike many other applications.
For example, in Itunes you can rename an artist, or even an album, and it will automatically appear in an updated folder. If you alter a photo in Photoshop, it makes you save it is a new file. In Iphoto you cannot make the same "root level" changes without making duplicates. From what I understand, you can place photos into an Album and then export that album (which makes duplicates). Iphoto will rename each duplicate file and then place it in the correct folder. The problem here is I have no idea where the original is to delete it.
Basically I want to create folders called "Trip to Italy 2003" or "Rachel's Wedding" and place all the photos associated with that event in those folders. The problem I run into is that I have a bunch of duplicates. I have heard of a program called Duplicate Annihilator which has gotten favorable reviews. If I import them into Iphoto all the photos are placed in random named folders. I say random because some of the photos were taken on cameras that didn't have the date set correctly. Hence some of my photos will appear in a labyrinth of folders called "Modified / 2001 / Roll 17 / DCM482 / Image25874654.jpg"
I am totally willing to wipe my Iphoto library clean and start again if there is a way to organize the photos as described above. Eventually I will take these folders and save them on a data DVD.
Thanks to anyone who can help.
    Gary

You do not need to delve into the folders within the iPhoto Library via the finder to access any photo. That is all done within iPhoto itself. If you need a photo for use outside of iPhoto read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access. iPhoto is a DAM application - Digital Asset Management, not a folder manager. There's a big difference. You can use keywords, album and smart albums to organize your photos.
If you still have the original files you might consider what I do. I rename each file with the date it was taken using the international date format: YYYY-MM-DD-001.jpg. You can download the demo version ofMedia Expression and automatically rename each folder of photos with the EXIF date and a sequential number. This makes chronological searching and sorting much easier both in iPhoto and the Finder.
If you want to not only manage the photos but the folders then Expression Media will let you do both. It will let you rename files after being imported into a catalog, move them between folders, add ITPC metadata to the files, create virtual albums called Supplemental categories, and much, much more. I use it as my primary DAM and iPhoto for special projects like books, slideshows, calendars, etc.

  • Problems with Apple Configurator and app lock.

    Hello Folks!
I'm using a bunch of iPod Touch of the 4th generation (iOS 6). I locked them in an app with apple configurator 1.1.2. From time to time I get a message: The guided access is not available any more, contact administrator.
Reconnecting to the maintance laptop solves the problem.
    How can I prevent this?
    Thanks

  • Can i setup airplay on my apple tv with apple configurator

    Hello
Can i setup airplay on my apple tv with apple configurator?

    Arris NVG589
This is a full modem gateway router.. so it should always stay as the main router.
i put the tc on bridge and now the ethernet cable is blinking amber at the ATT modem.
The setup as far as you have described it is correct.. but the ethernet link is apparently down.. this is a common problem on the AC model TC.
Can you give me the actual TC model as well.. sorry I should have asked in the first post more explicitly.
If it is the tall AC one just say.. AC.
Do you have the ethernet cord plugged into the WAN port of the TC.. ?? Please move it to any of the LAN ports.. see what happens.. it should link and have a solid green light on the TC port and the Arris..
Your TC should pickup an IP from the Arris and should have no problems.. or minor ones..
Please give me the summary screenshot from your TC..
    It should look like this.

  • Setting/keeping a static IP on iPad with Apple Configurator?

    Hey there
We are just getting some iPads into our school and I have been configuring them with Apple Configurator which has gone pretty well so far.
The problem I am having is that each of our iPads has to be assigned a Static IP address (for web filtering reasons) and each time I plug the iPad back in for a refresh or for a new install of an app the iPad switches back to DHCP and I have to manually type the static IP back in.
This is rapidly become a pain the more iPads we get in, is there a way to set Configurator to either leave the IP settings alone or to set it so that it pre-fills the static IP settings?  I've looked through all the profile options and nothing jumps out!
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Neal

Configuration profiles do not allow you to apply a static IP address to a device.
Instead, it would be highly recommended to configure static IP addressing within the DHCP server itself. This would accomplish what you want without worrying about which proifle goes on what device, etc. Configurator can also export the MAC addresses to make life easier in setting this up.
Right click the 'All Devices' in the Supervise tab, click Export Info > Device Information > WiFi MAC Address.

  • Device Enrollment Manager and Bulk Enrollment with Apple Configurator

    Hello,
Regarding the Device Enrollment Manager and Bulk Enrollment with Apple Configurator features released with Microsoft Intune in november/december 2014:
When will these features be available for the Intune hybrid parity? (Intune + SCCM 2012 R2)
We would really like to utilize the Device Enrollment Manager user account for shared device scenarios and the bulk enrollment feature to deploy multiple IOS devices to classroom iPads but we are "on hold" for now until these features will be released
for the hybrid parity version of Intune.

    https://technet.microsoft.com/nb-no/library/dn764958.aspx

There is no information available about when new features will be released. Probably this will be available in either a future CU, or vNext. Looking at the possible impact of that change, I would guess vNext.

  • How do I distribute Pages with Apple Configurator?

In my school we have 15 iPads and I want to install Pages, Keynote, Numbers onto them with Apple Configurator. When viewing the ipad apps in the App Store on my iMac, it doesn't show them as free, but it does if I view them on the app store on an iPad. I purchased the free apps on an iPad so it linked them to my account, and I was then able to download it to my iMac. However, when I try and distribute them using Apple Configurator, it's asking for redemption codes. I can install them fine individually on each iPad, but they're around 1GB in total to download, I'd rather only have to do this once and send them to all iPads rather than downloading it 15 times.
    Thanks.

I came across this problem again the other day when I download an app that was free for a limited time.
I've started using Apple Configurator purely for iOS updates and installing a profile containing Wi-Fi settings etc. I have been using iTunes to manage apps which is a lot more powerful. After downloading the apps thtrough iTunes onto my Mac, I can then distribute all of the apps to the iPads via USB (the iPad's are stored in a Griffin small cabinet that acts as as USB hub) and I can manage them all at once. It takes a while to transfer, but its quicker than downloading 5+GB on each iPad, and iTunes allows you to manage app folders as well.

  • Problems with Apple Configurator

I've been having trouble with Apple Configurator lately. For reference, the devices are not being supervised. They are just being restored from a backup file with four profiles, and two free applications. The backup file is fairly large - coming in at 12.9GB. Using a Mac Mini with around 150GB of free HD space. I'm using a Bretford tray so I usually try to plug in 10 devices at once. This has worked in the past and have only recently run into problems since the update to Configurator 1.4.2 and/or iOS7. So, I'm able to to run Configurator with 10 devices plugged in (I've since started only plugging in 6) and no matter what I try I cannot get more than 4 devices to successfully complete. And actually about half the time less than 4 actually complete successfully. The error I'm getting is Code 4 and the description just says "unable to restore backup." It takes about an 45 minutes to complete one device and about double that to complete 10. So getting 10 done at once is a huge time saver. When I'm only getting 4 devices completed and many time less than that at almost an hour, it is absolutely maddening. I've tried every combination of restarting and reinstalling Apple Config and still the problem exists.
I have a constant stockpile of iPads, Minis, and iTouches coming in so it would be extremely greatful if anyone had any tips or advice.
    Additional questions regaurding Apple Config.
    1. Is there any way to install multiple profiles on multiple devices on the newest version (1.4.2)? It seems like the new version only allows you to install 1 profile on multiple devices or multiple profiles on 1 device.
    2. Everytime a backup fails, Apple Config saves that backup in the MobileSync folder buried in the Containers folder. Each of there backups is almost 13GBs, so I'm having to constantly delete them to conserve HD space inorder to run so many devices at the same time. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening or auto delete failed backup restores?
I know this is very long winded but I wanted to get as much on my info out there as I could. Anyway, thanks for any help that anyone can provide!

  • Should a 5GB back-up take 3 hours to sync to an ipad with Apple Configurator

I'm setting up a cart of 22 iPads for my school.  I created an master and backup using Apple Configurator.  The size of the backup is between 5 and 6GB.  Had no issues creating the backup.  Supervised all the other iPads then began resorting them from the 5GB backup.  I'm on my 3rd hour of syncing.  Should it take this long?

It's quite possible.  I haven't run into your exact situation, but have regularly been syncing about 1 GB to anywhere from 12-60 iPads at a time.  And the major time difference seems to be related more to the amount of data that is being synced instead of how many devices.
With 1 GB it takes me about an hour.  So taking 3+ hours to sync 5 GB to 22 devices sounds reasonable to me.

  • Resetting Disabled iPads with Apple Configurator...

I'm having an issue trying to get iPads reset via Apple Configurator that have been disabled because the student has forgotten their passcode. Apple Configurator just says I need to unlock the iPad before I can reset it. What do I need to do as I work around? I have 5-10 iPads having this same issue.

Have they logged into an iTunes account, or an iCloud account? If they have logged into an iCloud account, there is nothing you can do personally, you'd need to contact Apple.
Here is some information I found previously about calling Apple and removing Activation Lock from an iPad
"Streamlined email process for removing activation lock
AppleCare has announced a new process to assist institutions with returned devices which may be activated locked.  For customers who experience this for the first time please call AppleCare at 800-800-2775 so that the process and needed documentation can be explained.  After the initial call customers can email with the required documentation for all Activation Lock Removal requests."

  • With Apple configurator, how to set AirPrint to print IPPS

    Dear Community,
My office wish to setup Airprint with Ipads.
My IT, however blocked the mDNS
I manage to use Apple Configurator to config the AirPrint.
    it now show IPP://192.168.1.101/printers/AirPrint
I heard that airprint support IPPS.
I am wondering how I can achieve this?
In my print server, I already have IPPS setup for Windows.
    Regards,
    GoRay

I assume you meant IPP not IPPS
see the section on "Legacy printer support"
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPrint
My IT, however blocked the mDNS
Talk to them. Progress is making changes.  Remember, IT didn't approve of PCs.
You need the AirPrint version of IPP.  You need a means of communicating over wifi with your printers.
printing to a non-airprinter from an iPad
To print from the iPad, your going to have to install some more software:
-- install a printer app on the ipad. many printer makers have iPad applications for their printers.  Look in the app store
-- install enabling software on a computer which you have connected the printer
on your iPad install the Helper app -- /print n share
This should/may get around the mDNS blockage.
Print directly to the widest range of network or WiFi printers available in any app. Alternatively print via your computer to ALL printers including USB & Bluetooth printers. View read and display large PDF, Office & iWork files. Easily transfer & store files from the Cloud or your computer.
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/print-n-share/id301656026?mt=8
    on your server
    For Windows, try:
       O'Print
          http://oprintware.com/
       PrintCentral
PrintCentral is the supreme printing app for the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch
A real DEBE -- does everything but eat.
         http://mobile.eurosmartz.com/products/printcentral.html
    Mac and Windows
"WePrint enables printing to shared printers for iOS/Android devices from our range of printing Apps."
    http://mobile.eurosmartz.com/downloads.html
You need a means of communicating over wifi with your printers.
You will need to avoid going through your existing wifi routers. You will note that you will need to be in direct wifi range of the printer or print server. Wifi range in a building is about a 100 feet.
solutions ( your IT may not like this.  Be sure your boss approves of these solutions. )
-- install wifi donge on your print servers.  This will give you a direct wifi path to your printer servers
-- buy a new printer that supports adhock printing.
-- install the airprint software on some pc with wifi.  The software will forward your print job to the real printer.

  • HT6029 I get error 3194  with Apple Configurator when trying to prepare my ipad

    Hi,
I am testing out Apple Configurator 1.4.2 (iTunes is up to date, as is Mac OS, at 10.8) for deploying profiles to an upcoming iPad fleet. I have run into two issues:
    - With an iPad2 running iOS7, and the "Supervision" option set to "ON", the Configurator downloaded iOS 6.1.3 successfully and tried to apply it, failing with the error 3194
    - With an iPad2 running iOS6.1.3 with the same options as above, it failed also with error 3194 and bricked the iPad. Restore also fails
Does anyone know what is causing the error 3194? I have run through Google and all it says is that the system cannot contact the Apple Server, but if I downloaded the updates successfully this can't be the issue, can it?
