If you lost your iPod on the Vegas strip and you can tell me specifics about your music and/or the serial number; I would love to reunite you with your iPod. Email me at [email protected]

Chris CA, thank you for trying to answer the question...What do you do with a found iPod?
...calling 1-800-MYAPPLE...hmnn, well if one can make one's way through the maze of "press 3 for customer service" - then, "press 4 for all other inquiries" - then "press 2 to speak to a representative." There is no, "press 6 if you found or lost an iPod." Now, if you don't get transfered to the "repair department"; that's good, because you will not be able to get passed the automated system, asking for your repair number or case number.
So, back to calling 1-800-MYAPPLE.
The second time, I got through to a human being, however, because "Kevin" did not purchase or register his iPod online; they have no record of the serial number, nor do they have any procedure to take down the s/n and enter it into any data base that would help return his iPod to him - eventhough, I have attempted to return it...

  • 20G iPod will not go into disk mode

    Hopefully someone can help.
I have a 2.5 year old 20g iPod with black / white screen.
I have the unhappy icon showing on the screen. I have tried the 5R's with no success and have been advised to go into disk mode in order to restore via iPod updater etc.
I cannot achieve disk mode and my PC (and other will not recognise).
It also makes a clicking noise booting up, surely the hard drive cannot be faulty after such a relativly short time.
    Any help is much appreciated..........Dave

Thank you for clarify I'm supposed to read the ENTIRE article. I thought I was just supposed to read the title and magically everything will fix itself. I appreciate you taking the time to help me however I do not appreciate the caps and the way you have addressed the situation. If you are not going to kindly help people/make suggestions just don't try! And for the record my conclusions are not illogical, the iOS7 thing is on the website in small font (which I got by reading the ENTIRE thing) and you should really find a new hobby because your socialization skills need some help! That goes for you too Chris. Not everyone is a tech nerd

  • 4th generation - 20G iPod not charging

    Hi,
My 4th generation (20G) iPod was working fine until recently.
It started to freeze from time to time, and then it was kept on until the battery discharged completely & then I could plug it to the power adaptor & off it went again fine after charging.
This time instead of being patient I tried to reset the iPod (hold menu +select button) & then the sad face appeared with the link:
    www.apple.com/support/ipod/
I tried to “force iPod into Disk Mode” & “restore your iPod” without success.
The iPod wont charge plugged into the power adaptor: it shows the dead battery icon for a second & then goes back to the apple logo & then to the sad face.
On the PC in windows XP & Vista, as well as on the Mac (Panther & Tiger) the iPod is not recognized & it shows the battery icon without being animated with a static lightning bolt : “Very low battery
(non-animated screen for color and monochrome models)”
Any hints, clues or “bright ideas”?
    Thanks.

out of bright ideas. tried everything. think i'll give up...

  • I updated my 20G iPod with click wheel and now it wont turn on all the way

Ok so I updated my 20G iPod with click wheel with the latest version (three point something), and now when i try to turn it on, it shows the apple logo and then has a pic of an ipod being plugged into a power adapter being plugged into a wall socket. i have reset it about 40 times and it always does the same thing. i have tried to charge the ipod with my computer but it does absolutely nothing (i dont have a power adapter). Also, when i reset my ipod WHEN IT IS PLUGGED INTO THE COMPUTER, it shows the "Very low battery" picture. Also, my computer does not see the iPod in "my computer" or iTunes. I have another iPod, which works perfectly on my computer. I thank anyone who tries to help me.
    Windows XP

You must have a charge of your iPod with an ac charger, in order to complete the Restore process.
You can also charge your iPod with
    1. iPod car charger
    2. iPod speaker dock system e.g. iPod HiFi or Bose soundstage

  • After installing the latest of iTunes the original files for almost 300 songs cannot be found for syncing to my iPod. The files are songs that were bought from iTunes, and copied into iTunes from CDs.

After installing the latest of iTunes the original files for almost 300 songs cannot be found for syncing to my iPod. The files are songs that were bought from iTunes, and copied into iTunes from CDs.

Apparently, security programs like Macafee and Norton view Itunes updates as new programs and block then from access. If you add Itunes to the list of exemptions, it solves the problem.

  • Hello! I have an older 20G ipod where the "circle" to scroll no longer works! any suggestions??

Hello! I have an older 20G ipod where the "circle" to scroll no longer works! any suggestions??

Considering the age of the iPod, it's likely been through quite a bit of useage and needs to be replaced.  There really isn't much else you can do to troubleshoot this issue.
If you would like to have it repaired, there are several 3rd party repair companies out there who can do the job at a pretty decent price.

  • I have a 4th gen 20G ipod whose hard drive has died.  Are replacement hard drives available through the apple store?

I have a 4th gen 20G ipod whose hard drive has died.  Are replacement hard drives available through the apple store?

I don't think Apple will do that repair for you, because the iPod is too old.  I believe the hard drive type used in 4th gen and older iPods is no longer produced.  There may be non-Apple shops who can do the repair, but they may be using a working part salvaged from a used iPod.
If you want to do the repair work yourself, and you are good at such things, this web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
(There are probably also YouTube videos on the topic.)
NOTE:  There are two hard drive physical sizes.  The thick version has two platters, and corresponds to the "thick" iPods (with double storage capacity).  A 4th gen 20GB model should be the thin version.  The hard drive used in iPods up to 4th gen should work interchangeably, but 5th gen and later iPods use a different type.
I have a 4th gen iPod that started out as a 20GB.  The hard drive failed, so I put a compact flash card on an adapter in there.  The adapter is like this one (I bought it a few years ago so it's probably not the same seller)
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Compact-Flash-CF-SSD-To-Toshiba-IPod-1-8-inch-Adapte r-Black-/121174875639
The compact flash card is standard; I bought the cheapest one.  I currently have an 8GB card in there, but prices have come down, so I may get a 64GB card soon.  It works great with the 8GB card.  No more hard drive spin-up delay.  Battery lasts longer.  It's lighter.  And it should be more shock resistant.
The only mod I needed to make on the adapter was to bend over two pins 90º, where you place a jumper to set the drive to "master."  The adapter plus CF card is actually smaller and thinner than just original 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive; I used some thin foam packing material (cut to the right shape) to take up the excess space and ensure the adapter and card did not become disconnected.
The 4th gen iPod has excellent sound, compared to some later iPods.

  • New computer, 20G iPod.  How do I update iTunes library?

Got a new computer (old computer crashed, lost data) and I already have a 20G iPod full of music. I downloaded iTunes and plugged in my iPod. A message comes up that says "The iPod is linked to another iTunes music library, do you want to change the link to this iTunes library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library?". I assume this means if I click "no" and the music stays on my iPod but doesn't import into the library. If I click "yes", will it erase my iPod music????? I don't know what to do because I'm afraid it will erase the music on my iPod... help!

Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything back.
If your backup drive/disks were stolen as well, then:

  • Problems formatting new 20g ipod

I just got a new 20 gig ipod today and installed the software on my pc. it said that my ipod needed to be formatted, so i clicked ok. its been formatting for almost an hour now, and the screen still says 'do not disconnect'. does anyone know how long this process usually takes, or does this sound like it is malfunctioning? thanks.

Although I'm sure you have completed the installation by now, I want to post this for others with the same question b/c I, myself, needed the answer earlier It took approximately 2 1/2 hours to format my 20g iPod for Windows. I do not have a 2.0 USB, though, so it will be faster for those of you who do. I noticed whenever this question is asked, there seems to be confusion about what is being formatted and for what reason. To be clear, I was formatting a brand new 20g iPod during installation for use with Win XP.
