  • SOLVED: 1030NR - SD Card Reader launches Found New Hardware Wizard when media is inserted

I purchased the HP Mini 1000 1030NR a few days ago and have been very happy with it so far.  Last night I attempted to use the integrated SD card reader to view some photos from my digital cameras SD card.  When I inserted the card into the drive, Windows did its normal hardware initializations.  It should have detected and installed the SD Card Reader automatically, but instead I was presented with the "Found New Hardware" wizard.  Every attempt to install the driver automatically via the Wizard failed.  Every SD card I tried in the reader produced the same results.
After spending 2 and a half hours online with HP support, their eventual resolution was to do a full System Restore.  As owners of the HP Mini 1000 will know, this process is made difficult due to the units lack of a DVD-ROM drive.  Furthermore, the problem here is clearly a missing driver.  Doing a System Restore as suggested would be like swatting at a fly with a cinderblock.  It may resolve the problem, but there is a much more straightforward way.
The problem is that due to the nature of the XP installation on the 1030NR,(scaled down for performance/size reasons), the linkage between recognized hardware and the internal Windows driver respository has been broken, at least as far as USB devices are concerned.  I found this out after the same HP support technician suggested I uninstall all of my USB Root Hubs from Device Manager and reboot.  Those never came back either.  Fortunately I had created an XP restore point beforehand and quickly got my USB ports back.  Of course, my SD card reader still didn't work.
The solution is to restore that linkage between recognized hardware and the internal Windows driver repository so that the operating system can "find" the USB drivers and in turn, install the necessary software components for the SD card reader.  Instructions for doing this are as follows:
    1.  Insert an SD card into the SD card reader.  The "Found New Hardware" Wizard will appear.
    2.  Check the radio button to not allow Windows Update to search for software.  Click Next.
    3.  Check the radio button to "Install from a list or specific Location (Advanced).  Click Next.
    4.  Check the radio button to "Search For the Best Driver In These Locations.  Then click the checkbox "Include this location in the search."
    5.  Click the Browse button and navigate to "C:\Windows\inf"  If you cannot navigate to this folder you may type it in the box manually.  Click Next.
    6.  Follow the remaining on-screen prompts to complete the software driver installation.  You may receive an error code at the end indicating that the device could not start.  Disregard this for now.  Once driver installation has been completed, reboot the computer.
    7.  Once the system is back up, the "Found New Hardware" wizard will probably reappear.  If it doesn't, make sure the SD Card Reader has a card inserted in it.  Cancel the Found New Hardware wizard and click Start - Control Panel - System - Hardware tab - Device Manager and look for entries with either an exclamation point or a question mark.  You'll probably see the SD Card Reader with an exclamation point and an "Unknown Device" with a question mark.
    8.  For the SD card reader, right click on it and select "Update Driver..." from the list of options.  Follow steps 2 through 6 above to complete installation.  At the end, the card reader should be functional (you can see it in Windows Explorer, etc.) but you'll still have an "Unknown Device" in Device Manager.
    9.  To resolve the "Unknown Device", once again go to Device Manager, right click on the Unknown Device entry, click Update Driver and follow steps 2 through 6 above.
    10.  One final reboot and the SD card reader should be functional and no ? or ! warnings/errors should be present in Device Manager.
The reason for this issue in the first place is most certainly due to the way Windows XP is configured on the HP Mini 1000.  Although this solution works for the 1030NR, it should also work for models in the same family that contain the 2-in-1 SD card reader.  HP really needs to provide an official fix for this issue, preferably a "patch" that re-establishes the linkage between recognized hardware devices and the internal Windows XP driver repository.  Their official support suggestion of doing a complete System Restore to solve the problem is impractical, heavy handed, and may in fact not solve the issue.
It took me nearly 5 hours total to resolve this problem.  I hope this post saves somebody both time and trouble.

C:\Windows is the default folder for the Windows XP installation on the 1030nr.  Unless changed during installation, all PC's (not just mini's) that have XP installed will have this folder present.  As for the inf folder specifically, this is hidden from view in Windows Explorer unless you tick the option to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from Tools - Folder Options - View tab.
Still, you shouldn't need to "see" this folder for the above instructions to work.  When running the "Found New Hardware" wizard, you can just type the path in manually at the appropriate spot.  If you truly do not have a C:\Windows\inf folder, then it sounds like something is wrong with your Windows installation and a full System Recovery may be the best option.  It might be a good idea to contact HP support first before donig that though.
Does your Mini run Windows?  If not, unfortunately the instructions I laid out above will not help you.  I believe the "other" Mini's run some HP customized version of Ubuntu Linux.  For that OS, you'll need to obtain a driver specifically for it to get the card reader working.  Try the HP site for a download for the SD card reader or contact support.

  • NI-DAQmx 8.3.0f0 installed but Found New Hardware Wizard shows up when plugging in a USB-6008

I have NI-DAQmx Device Driver 8.3.0f0 installed with LabVIEW 8.2 but when I plug in a NI USB-6008 I see the "Found New Hardware Wizard" in Windows XP.  Since the DAQmx driver is installed shouldn't Windows recognize the device immediately?
I cancel the driver and I get the taskbar message "A problem occurred during hardware installation.  Your device may not work properly."
The USB-6008 does not appear under Devices and Interfaces in MAX.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

Ahh, I thought Windows performed an automatic search after cancel is clicked.
I clicked next and allowed Windows to search and it says:
    "Cannot Start this Hardware"
There was a problem installing this hardware: USB-6008
The device cannot start.  (Code 10)
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device but the results were the same.
    Any ideas?

  • My ipod touch 2nd generation is stuck at recovery mode when I tried to update from a 3 software to a 4 software. I tried puting it in DFU mode to fix it but a window pops up about  the computer found new hardware and needs a cdrom. What do I do?

My Ipod is stuck at restore mode, when I downloaded fixrecovery and zlib1, they gave me a file which I can't open iBSS.n72ap. Fixrecovery wanted me to put it in DFU mode and I did but a window from my computer pops up telling me that it found new hardware and wants a CDrom to install. The ipod did not come with a CDrom software. It wont go back, and iTunes does not recongnize it. What should I do?

    Try here.
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
I would first try removing and reinstalling all the Apple software using:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    or
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

  • Disable "Found New Hardware" and Stop it automatically installing.

    Hello All.
Ok the Issue I have is below and can't seem to find the correct answer I need.
    I have two dell WYSE
boxes running Windows XP. I have one with an SSD to do all my configurations on and one is a 4GB flash box for steaming on to using WYSE WSM.
I have created a locked down version of XP with all sorts of registry hacks and Group policy to stop the end user accessing
system files and control panel etc..
I have it the way I want it but when I stream to the Flash Box, it picks up it has a 4GB SATA drive in it and installs it
and creates itself a drive letter E:\ and puts an icon in My Computer. This going
completely against what I wanted, I don't want the end user to have local drives. ONLY pendrives.
    What I have done:
I have used group policy to restrict the view and access of A: B: C: & D: drives so it still allows me to use pen drives.
I have disabled some services to stop searing for new hardware on start up which hasnt worked.
There has been posts of going into device manager and disabling the hardware in there, but I cant do that on the FLASH box
as its already streaming and its locked down so cant the configs have to be made on the SSD box which doesn't have the 4GB flash drive in.
    Any ideas?
I hope there is enough information on here for an answer.

  • Found New Hardware Error with iTunes and Motorola L7 SLVR

    Hi,
I reinstalled iTunes because when I connected my phone via USB I would get an error in Found New Hardware Wizard: There was a problem installing this hardware. Motorola Motorola Phone USB Device. After reinstall, I opened iTunes and no error until it asked me to 'convert my phone for use with iTunes'. Once I said yes, it did something to the phone and then the error re-occurred. I am using the latest version of iTunes.
    Shiff1

None of the steps outlined in the referenced document resolved the problem. In addition, simply connecting the iPod to the system now has the added effect of freezing my wireless connectivity. I can still get iPod connectivity to the system, but I'm offline until I reboot again (w/o the iPod connected).
When I try the second set of steps recommended in the attached note ("Disable conflicting System Services and Startup Items"), and had only the iPod selected, the system would not allow a complete boot up at all (kept sending me back to edit the System Services screen). It would then not allow me to restore the system to the selections that were previously on the computer. A mess!!
I ended up doing a complete system restore (back to a prior system configuration) and that corrected the problem. But, of course, I continue to get the error when booting up that "new hardware found".
    Any other ideas?

  • I have a new iPad Air. Can I use plug in USB camera reader to have a load of movies etc on an external hard drive and then plug and play so to speak. I'm off on holiday and haven't got the capacity to have everything on that I'd like for the kids

Can I use a plug in USB camera reader to have a load of movies etc on an external hard drive and then plug and play so to speak? I'm off on holiday and haven't got the capacity on the iPad to have everything on that I'd like for the kids.
So basically I want a hard drive with X amount of films etc on. Can I then watch them on my iPad?
    Hope this makes sense.

  • ITunes 6.0.1: "Found New Hardware: iPodService"

I posted this yesterday in the "Upgrading, etc." forum, but have not received any responses or help; I thought it might be more visible in this forum. Since I posted, I did find a few posts that I thought would help, and I tried the suggestions, with no success. The problem still occurs:
I downloaded and installed iTunes 6.0.1, and despite my fears -- after reading other posts -- that I would have problems with the new iTunes, so far it has worked fine, even though I did install it over the old version.
But after I installed it, I shut down my computer and went back to it later; and when I started it up again, I got a message in the taskbar: "Found New Hardware: iPodService". (I'm using Windows XP.) Then it went to Install New Hardware. [I get the error EVERY TIME I boot up.]
It asks me if I want to install from a disk, but of course since I downloaded the program, I don't have a disk. I tried using the CD-ROM I got with my iPod, but it couldn't find what it needed there. And not only that, I didn't install any new hardware, only software!
I have searched the Apple Discussions for help, with no results; it seems like nobody else has had this problem.
What do I do to fix this, ignore it, or keep it from happening again? I did search a little online, and I found out that the iPodservice.exe program isn't essential, so I could simply go to Task Manager and end the process, but I want to be sure about it first.
Any help with this is appreciated.

    DEZ3124,
I want to change the default location of the music libary, so I went through the edit | preferences | consolidate library processes...which seemed to work fine.
This method will change the location of the iTunes Music folder but the the iTunes folder itself will be left behind in its original place: C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents\My Music. This makes iTunes (and by extension will also make you) much happier and in this case you'll be well-advised to let it have its way.
Note that all the actual music files you now have, as well as those you will add in the future(which take up the bulk of the space on your hard drive), will be in the new location. The iTunes folder will be left behind with the iTunes Library files which don't take up much space at all ... if that's a concern.

  • Is the 595759-001 DVD burner for Elitebook 8540p plug and play

I have a DVD ROM player, only, in my Elitebook 8540P, and I just ordered a DVD writer (595759-001) to replace it with. Do I just install the hardware? Is this going to be a plug and play experience, or do I need to locate drivers for the replacement? Do I need to uninstall the driver for the original DVD ROM?

Hi, The driver for any optical drive is provided by Windows, so you should just have to connect the new device, however it can sometimes avoid any issue by doing this as follows. Hold down the Windows key and press R.  Into the Run box type devmgmt.msc and hit enter.  Expand DVD/CD=ROM drives, right click the existing device and select Uninstall. When done, shutdown the notebook and fit the new optical drive. When you then boot Windows, give it a few minutes to fully load and you should find the new drive is up and running. Regards, DP-K

  • How do I set MacBook to an external display when the plug and play doesn't recognize it?  I am trying to set my Samsung 530 LCD as a monitor but HDMI and VGA cords (and the adaptor for them) doesn't seem to work.

I have tried everything I can find on line but they all claim that the plug and play works, and they don't for me.  I tried the mini dvi to HDMI and a HDMI cord and that was not recognized no matter which unit I rebooted first.  I found someone who said that my Macbook might be too old for the HDMI technology so I returned the cords and went to the VGA cord and adaptor.
I tried this first with the HDMI setup:
    http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx= 167919&modelname=LN40C650L1F&modelcode=&session_id=NDhJrD0DQT0Z8KRsm62yhxJxqnyPy SKhlhpB8vQ6h9Q7R2BZJGzj!-1089109758!1761676444!7501!-1!434477884!1761676348!7501 !-1!1292098185857
Then I tried this with the VGA setup:
    http://support-us.samsung.com/cyber/popup/iframe/pop_troubleshooting_fr.jsp?idx= 167901&modelname=LN40C650L1F&modelcode=&session_id=NDhJrD0DQT0Z8KRsm62yhxJxqnyPy SKhlhpB8vQ6h9Q7R2BZJGzj!-1089109758!1761676444!7501!-1!434477884!1761676348!7501 !-1!1292098185857
I contacted Samsung support and they said I needed to set the display settings to external display on the mac.  I went to the display settings and moved the icon to my status bar.  When I click on search for displays or whatever it says (I'm not at my Mac right now) it does nothing.
    What am I missing?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

  • Seagate Plug and Play from Macbook Pro to Macbook Air

Recently bought a new Macbook Air to upgrade my 2010 Macbook Pro 13 inch.
I had been using a Seagate Plug and Play external hardrive that needed no formatting on my Macbook Pro . However when I tried to use the same on my Macbook Air it did not allow me to drag files across the the hardrive.
I can see it in the Finder but unable to drag files to it.
I thought Plug and Play woudl across all Macs?

OS X comes with the ability to read NTFS but not write it. Some Seagate drives come with software to enable writing NTFS on that drive. You probably installed it on your 2010 MBP when you got the drive, then forgot you had done so. Find the software installer if it is still on the drive and run it on your MBA. (You might have to locate a newer version online.)
Alternatively, you can purchase a version that can run on any NTFS disk. I use Paragon NTFS for Mac. I initially got a limited version with a Seagate drive, then purchased the full version.

  • Plug and play speakers not working properly after upgrading to Windows 8.1

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, my plug and play speakers do not work properly.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled them, and restarted.  When I try to play music, nothing comes out.  If I turn them off and back on, music will play for approximately 30 seconds, only from one speaker, then it turns off and fades to no sound.  They worked fine until I upgraded to Windows 8.1.  The manufacturer has not been able to successfully assist me.  Has anyone else reported a similar issue after upgrading OS software?  Any suggestions?  These are fairly new speakers, less than 2 years old, and not used very much.  I do have them installed via a K-V switch, and all other devices linked to the K-V switch are functioning properly (monitor and wireless keyboard).  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • My classics IPOD has died over the weekend and I plan to but an IPOD Touch -- but need to to 'work' and simply sync all my 'old' music on a plug and play basis -- or is that wishful thinking ? I need it urgently for a holiday so only time to buy it n run

    Any advice on :
    1. The Touch as a product
    2. The likely chances of plug and play resync to new device without hours of 'fiddling' / support calls
or I can just use my Shuffle I guess ----

There should be no problems, make sure to have all the needed software updates for Windows and the new iTunes 10.5 installed before connecting your iPod touch.
You already know how the basic sync process is working, there are a few more features added like mail for example: iOS: Syncing with iTunes
