Foundation 2013 Farm and Distributed Cache settings

We are on a 3 tier farm - 1 WFE + 1APP + 1SQL - have had many issues with AppFab and Dist Cache; and an additional issue with noderunner/Search Services.  Memory and CPU running very high.  Read that we shouldn't be running Search
and Dist Cache in the same server, nor using a WFE as a cache host.  I don't have the budget to add another server in my environment.
I found an article (IderaWP_CachingFormSharePointPerformance.pdf) saying "To make use of SharePoint's caching capabilities requires a Server version of the platform." because it requires the publishing feature, which Foundation doesn't have.
So, I removed Distributed Cache (using Powershell) from my deployment and disabled the AppFab.  This resolved 90% of server errors but performance didn't improve. Now, not only I'm getting errors now on Central Admin. - expects Dist Cache
- but I'm getting disk operations reading of 4000 ms.
Questions:
1) Should I enable AppFab and disable cache?
2) Does Foundation support Dist Cache?  Do I need to run Distributed Cache?
3) If so, can I run with just 1 cache host?  If I shouldn't run it on a WFE or an App server with Search, do I have to stop Search all together?  What happens with 2 tier farms out there?
4) Reading through the labyrinth of links on TechNet and MSDN on the subject, most of them says "Applies to SharePoint Server".
5) Anyone out there on a Foundation 2013 production environment that could share your experience?
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

That article is referring to BlobCache, not Distributed Cache. BlobCache requires Publishing, hence Server, but DistributedCache is required on all SharePoint 2013 farms, regardless of edition.
I would leave your DistCache on the WFE, given the App Server likely runs Search. Make sure you install
AppFabric CU5 and make sure you make the changes as noted in the KB for
AppFabric CU3.
You'll need to separately investigate your disk performance issues. Could be poor disk layout, under spec'ed disks, and so on. A detail into the disks that support SharePoint would be valuable (type, kind, RPM if applicable, LUNs in place, etc.).

I suspect that both errors have the same root cause, but I could do with some assistance in resolving this. Do I need to install some Microsoft Chart Controls by any chance? I am assuming that as the links are there in SharePoint Foundation, that they should
be working within this edition of SharePoint.

    Hi  Kevin,
According to your error message,  please  make sure "Resources.MossChart.resources" was correctly embedded or linked into assembly "App_GlobalResources.kbifvsaw”, it seems like that mosschart.resx
and mosschart.en-US.resx missing or bad of the error web site.
To correct the problem you can manually deploy the resource files to the correct IIS Virtual Directory location. To deploy the resource files manually following the steps below.
    1. Navigate to 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\15\CONFIG\Resources'
    2. Copy the files 'mosschart.resx' and 'mosschart.en-US.resx'.
    3. Navigate to the IIS Virtual Directory of your SharePoint website
    4. Paste 'mosschart.resx' 'mosschart.en-US.resx’ into the Virtual Directory's App_GlobalResources folder
    5. Perform an IISRESET
    6. Refresh your page.

  • Duplicate Search Databases in SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm

I seem to have 2 seperate issues with Search within my SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm. This is a new Farm, so I can remove the search service application and re-create if this is a way that can clear the 2 issues I am experiencing.
    Issue 1:
For some reason I have 2 instances of the following search related DB's:
    SearchAdminDatabase
    SearchAnalyticsReportingDatabase
    SearchGathererDatabase
    SearchLinksDatabase
1 instance of each of the databases all report database status of "No Action Required" and the other instance of all the DB's report a database status of "Not Responding".
    Issue 2:
My search service application seems to be working fine as I am able to crawl content and retrieve results, however the DB's associted with this search service application are reported with the following warning within the SharePoint Health Analyzer. I have
been unable to run the Upgrade-SPContentDatabase command against these databases as I get a message saying that the content database could not be found:
    Title
Databases running in compatibility range, upgrade recommended.
    Severity
    2 - Warning
    Category
    Configuration
    Explanation
The following databases have versions that are older than the current SharePoint software, but are within the backwards compatible range:
    Search_Service_Application_AnalyticsReportingStoreDB_a3c64b2f3b9b4a5d83383ec0b1ecfcf4,
    Search_Service_Application_CrawlStoreDB_ffb8d716450242cc849a7f44f521bfc9,

    Search_Service_Application_LinksStoreDB_75efb2f689cf49f19c98a5a8155e47b7.
    Remedy
To achieve optimal results from these databases, use Upgrade-SPContentDatabase to upgrade Content databases, or psconfig.exe to upgrade other databases.  For more information about this rule, see "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142697".

At time people create search service application and delete it. SA is deleted but database were not deleted for some reason. so these might be those stale database. You can delete them if you want
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/tothesharepoint/archive/2011/12/19/find-active-databases-used-by-sharepoint-server-2010.aspx
If you want a report of all of your SharePoint databases that includes the GUIDs and related property values, use the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell.
There are several Windows PowerShell cmdlets you can use to find all of the SharePoint databases and then print this report to a text file. The quickest and perhaps easiest cmdlet is “Get-SPDatabase”. Run this cmdlet in the SharePoint
2010 Management Shell to list all of the SharePoint Server databases with properties for each one. From this potentially large list you can then obtain specific information such as the database ID by using additional syntax in your cmdlet. Similarly, also
in the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell, run “Get-SPDatabase | Sort-Object
disksizerequired -desc | Format-Table Name” and you will get a simple list of the names for each database. You can then print this list to a text file by adding, “| out-file c:\db.txt” to the end of the command.
    For detailed information, see
Windows PowerShell for SharePoint Server 2010,

yes, it is. but what you want to know about Online & DC? are you planning any solution for it?
Not available to SharePoint Online customers. SharePoint Server 2013 customers can use the Distributed Cache service to
cache feature functionality, which improves authentication, newsfeed, OneNote client access, security trimming, and page load performance.

  • Automating Sharepoint Foundation 2013 Installation and Deployment of Project

    Hi all,
I'm a long time software developer with absolutely no experience in Sharepoint.
I have just joined a new company and I was asked by the team leader to create an installer for Sharepoint Foundation 2013 and a working Sharepoint solution made by the company, preferably using HTA.
I have experimented installing it manually and deploying the solution, however, what's the best method to automate these two steps?
I was thinking of something like AutoSPInstaller, and after the end of the installation, I would run Add-SPSolution and Install-SPSolution commands for deploying the solution.
    What do you think?

So the only problem with SharePoint Foundation is that you cannot script the provisioning of the Search Service, you must use the wizard via Central Admin UI to create it. There is an unsupported workaround, but again, unsupported so I don't use it.
I'd stay away from HTA and go just pure PowerShell prompts, myself though.

I am using following power shell command.
    $contentService = [Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebService]::ContentService
    $devDashboardSettings = $contentService.DeveloperDashboardSettings
    $devDashboardSettings.DisplayLevel = "On"
    $devDashboardSettings.Update();
I have used this commands on Sharepoint 2013 Foundation. In that, it shows small icon for DD. But when I am clicking on it, it doesn't show anything. Just blank screen. When I used same commands with Sharepoint 2013 server vesion, these commands works for me.
Does this mean that, in Sharepoint Foundation, It doesn't provide Developer Dashboard. ?

  • Sharepoint Foundation 2013 On a SBS 2011 Domain??

  • SharePoint 2007 (WSS 3.0) migration to SharePoint Foundation 2013

    Hi
I have a requirement to migrate a SharePoint 2007 (WSS 3.0) farm to a SharePoint Foundation 2013 farm. The WSS 3.0 farm has SQL Server 2005 Standard running so no restrictions on the size of the content database. The SharePoint Foundation 2010 and 2013 farms
will share the same SQL Server 2012 Standard instance (as I know WSS 3.0 will have to be migrated to 2010 before 2013). I also have two other WSS 3.0 farms (so three WSS 3.0 Farms, lets call these A (250GB), B (90GB) and C (60GB)) that I need to migrate
into WSS 3.0 Farm A before the migration to SP 2010.
My question is, can I migrate a 400GB WSS 3.0 site collection to SP 2010 or will I have to split this into separate site collections? I have read that there is a best practice limit of 100GB per site collection but this does not stop a larger migration from
happening. Obviously over time when the migration has completed to SharePoint Foundation 2013 the single site collection will grow and grow so perhaps now is the right time to split this out into, say, year named site collections, but surely this will incur
an end of year process to create new site collections and a custom dev headache due to different locations to send newly created sites?
    Thanks.

The answer is Yes, and you are correct about the best practice of a limit of 100GB,
although, document and record centers (e.g. non collaborative) can go much higher.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262787(v=office.15).aspx#ContentDB
That being what it is, your sites will perform better if you find a topology that allows the content databases to be under 100GB each.  You can use Move-SPSite to accomplish that feat.
You'll want a separate instance for 2010 and a separate instance for 2013
and finally, put some quota's in place and then governance document\statement that informs users that 100 GB is the max for any given site collection that uses collaborative features (calendars, lists, workflows, etc.)
The simple path is explained on technet, go from 2007 to 2010 (you can inplace upgrade if you want) then go from 2010 to 2013, database detach and attach is only way.
please check the below link that explains more about the migration from share point 2007->2013.

  • Restrict Which Users Can Enter Data In List Form in SharePoint Foundation 2013

Is there a way to restrict which users can enter data in particular fields in a list item entry form?
We are using a SharePoint Foundation 2013 list and calendar to manage vacation time. We need to restrict non-supervisor users users from entering a value in a certain field in the vacation request form.
Here is how the system works now:
    1. Employees complete the vacation request form (which creates a list item)
    2. An email is sent to their supervisor to either approve or decline the request
    3. Approved requests are automatically entered onto the vacation calendar
We have restricted the list so that only supervisors can edit items (the pending vacation requests). The problem is that all users can mark their own requests as approved when they fill out the request form in the first place. Is there a way to restrict
which users can enter data in particular fields on a list item entry form?

Thanks for the suggestion. We ended up 1) hiding the approval column and 2) creating a second list, workflow, etc. The user no longer sees the approval column when filling out the form. Requests are now submitted to list A. Workflow #1 copies the request
to List B, then deletes the item from List A. Once the request is added to List B, Workflow #2 emails the user that the request has been received and emails the supervisor that a request needs to be approved. Only supervisors have editing permissions on List
    B. Approved requests are automatically added to the vacation calendar (the calendar view of List B).
We found the following site to be helpful in learning how to hide the list column:

  • Distributed Cache gets are very time consuming!!!!!

We have an application that uses Coherence as a distributed partitioned cache server.
Our problem is that the access to the near cache is very fast but the access to the remote servers is very cpu consuming (maybe for the deserialization of the objects retrieved) at such point that disabling the cache and reading the objects directly from the dbms (Oracle) improves the performances.
We use coherence as the second level cache of hibernate so we have not much control on how hibernate serialize and deserialize it's objects (we cannot implement a custom externalization).
Have you any experience of performance problems with the combination hibernate/tangosol and distributed cache?

    Hi Giancarlo,
    It's Jon, not Cameron ;)
The Hibernate cache API (including 3.0) does not support bulk-fetches from cache, which means that these cache fetches are serial rather than parallel. Depending on how much of your performance problem is network related, Coherence may actually perform much better than straight JDBC as the application load increases (time per request will remain similar, but won't increase much under heavier load).
The advantage to using the Coherence API (rather than Hibernate API) is that you have far better control over how your queries run. The drawback of course is that you have to code your own queries if they become more complex than search queries. As a result, it often makes sense to use Hibernate (or equivalent) for the bulk of your queries, then code specific queries directly against Coherence when performance really matters. A simple example of this is the ability to perform bulk gets (using <tt>NamedCache.getAll()</tt>). With queries that return hundreds or thousands of items, this can have a huge impact on performance (an order of magnitude or more depending on object complexity). You also get the ability to use XmlBean/ExternalizableLite and cluster-parallel search queries.
As an aside, with the Coherence cache servers, you should avoid making your JVM heaps excessively large. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend a 512MB heap size for cache servers, using as many instances as required to reach your desired cache capacity. Also, from what I've seen, 64-bit JVMs are less efficient with memory usage than 32-bit (though performance seems a bit better on the x86-64 platforms vs the 32-bit versions).

  • Locking in replicated versus distributed caches

    Hello,
In the User Guide for Coherence 2.5.0, in section 2.3 Cluster Services Overview it says
the replicated cache service supports pessimistic lockingyet in section 2.4 Replicated Cache Service it says
if a cluster node requests a lock, it should not have to get all cluster nodes to agree on the lockI am trying to decide whether to use a replicated cache or a distributed cache, either of which will be small, where I want the objects to be locked across the whole cluster.
If not all of the cluster nodes have to agree on a lock in a replicated cluster, doesn't this mean that a replicated cluster does not support pessimistic locking?
    Could you please explain this?
    Thanks,
    Rohan

    Hi Rohan,
The Replicated cache supports pessimistic locking. The User Guide is discussing the implementation details and how they relate to performance. The Replicated and Distributed cache services differ in performance and scalability characteristics, but both support cluster-wide coherence and locking.

  • How can i configure Distributed cache servers and front-end servers for Streamlined topology in share point 2013??

my question is regarding SharePoint 2013 Farm topology. if i want go with Streamlined topology and having (2 distribute cache and Rm servers+ 2 front-end servers+ 2 batch-processing servers+ cluster sql server) then how distributed servers will
be connecting to front end servers? Can i use windows 2012 NLB feature? if i use NLB and then do i need to install NLB to all distributed servers and front-end servers and split-out services? What will be the configuration regarding my scenario.
    Thanks in Advanced!

For the Distributed Cache servers, you simply make them farm members (like any other SharePoint servers) and turn on the Distributed Cache service (while making sure it is disabled on all other farm members). Then, validate no other services (except for
the Foundation Web service due to ease of solution management) is enabled on the DC servers and no end user requests or crawl requests are being routed to the DC servers. You do not need/use NLB for DC.

    Please try below mentioned steps:
    1. Central Administration > Monitoring > Review job definitions > Look for following timer job "Application Server Administration Service Timer Job" > Disable
    2. Then open windows administrative services (services.msc), stop SharePoint Timer Service
    3. Clear SharePoint Timer configuration cache by following steps mentioned in below blog:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jamesway/archive/2011/05/23/sharepoint-2010-clearing-the-configuration-cache.aspx
    4. Start SharePoint Timer Service and give it a few seconds so that the new XML files from the location you deleted then are re-populated.
5.Central Administration > Monitoring > Review job definitions > Look for following timer job "Application Server Administration Service" Timer Job > Enable

  • MasterPages and SharePoint foundation 2013

    Hi
I have created a web application in SharePoint Foundation 2013. I also have created multiple subsite.
I want to change the visual (branding) of the website (and all subsites).
I have created a custom masterpage and wanted to set it as the default master page. But when I do that, everything is now set with that custom masterpage (even the site setting pages, the viewlsts.aspx, settings.aspx).
Is there a way to bind masterpages only with the content pages of my website ?
Any links for info about that ?
    Thanks

    Hi  marric01,
All of the site setting pages, the viewlsts.aspx and settings.aspx is the application page. An application page is an ASP.NET Web page that is designed for
use in a SharePoint Web site. Application pages are stored on the file system of the front-end Web server in the %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\14\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS directory and exist for every site in a Web application.
This folder is mapped to an Internet Information Services (IIS) virtual directory called _layouts. Every site and subsite will have access to the application pages by using the _layouts virtual directory.
The scenario you have seen is what SharePoint will do when set the master page through Site Settings->Master page. All the pages on the site will apply this master page.
The settings.aspx, viewlsts.aspx and upload.aspx. etc. are application pages, the difference between application page and content page is that: application page store in server 15/Template/Layouts folder, all applications in the SharePoint farm use the same
application page, while content page store in content database, each site use a unique page of them, you can update the page content in different site as you like.
SharePoint by default doesn’t provide a method to set different master page for application pages, and this is not recommended, even if you can change this through update the page directly in the layouts folder, whenever you change it, it will affect the whole
SharePoint farm, on all web applications.
If you really need to this, I would suggest you to custom the ribbon button to direct to your custom specific application page like settings page. The concern by doing this is the default settings page is still available, and if users access the page by typing
the url directly, he will see the default settings page.

    Hi,
Thanks for the information. While waiting for help with this forum, I was playing with SharePoint Foundation 2013 and SharePoint designer 2013. I saw that I can bind custom masterpage for each page that I create.
(Style => Attach => Custom masterpage)
I also managed to bind subsite pages to that same custom masterpage.
Is this a good way to customize the look and feel of my SharePoint foundation 2013 website (We are building a small intranet for about 100 person).
Users are only gona be able to modify content inside the pages. We are (IT dept) the only one that can modify structure, add new pages and modify the look for the website.
    Thanks again !
    Richard
