Four-Finger Swipe - HOLD Desktop

Does anyone know how to use the four-finger up swipe to show and hold the desktop so that you can see the desktop AND work on it? Currently when I show the desktop (using 4-finger up swipe) as soon as I click on the desktop, all open windows/apps revert back to their original place, covering the desktop. The only way I've found to use the desktop via the 4-finger up swipe is by doing the swipe twice- swipe up once, click desktop, desktop goes away, swipe up again, click on desktop - work on desktop. This double process is annoying and cumbersome when you're trying to "fly".
Does anyone know how to do this, differently then described above? Is there anyway to make this an option (e.g., cmd + 4 up swipe)? Does anyone know what I am talking about?

What you describe is not what happens here... I can click all I want on the desktop or icons on the desktop without having all the windows swoop back in. It's supposed to work the way you describe wanting it to work. Try logging in to another account on the same machine or [starting up in Safe Mode|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455] and see if the problem persists then.

Has anyone figured out how to revert the four finger swipe up to see the desktop? I've been using that for years and with Mavericks I cannot. I would like to have four finger swip up for show desktop, and swipe down for expose. It's destroyed my producitivty for that feature.

You can show the desktop with a three-finger spread if it is enabled here:
System Preferences > Trackpad > More Gestures > check Show Desktop
or
Commant+F3 (Command+F3+fn depening on your settings)

Four-finger swipe constantly stops working

I'm running Snow Leopard on my 27" iMac with a Magic Trackpad, and the four-finger swipe Expose gesture regularly stops working, which two and three-finger gestures continue to work fine.
Sometimes a reboot will fix the problem, other times I can reboot two or three times before four-finger swipe works again. I've used the trackpad since it was released with no issues until a month or two ago when the problem started.
I've installed the latest combo update, repaired disk permissions many times over, reset PRAM and SMC, deleted a plist file pertaining to Expose which someone on the forum recommended. Nothing has helped as of yet.
When 10.7 Lion is released I'll do a full and fresh install which should finally take care of things, but until then I'd love to get this working without having to reinstall 10.6.

Four finger swipe

i notice that when i leave the macbook untouched for a while, the four finger swipe stops working until i restart .
i've tried:
- reset PRAM
- repair disk permission
- reinstall the combo update
- killall hidd
- try the trackpad update and it says i'm up to date. everything is up to date
please help

for those who have the same problem. just go to the apple store. or try to reinstall the snow leopard

Four finger swipe shows screenshot of last session

A bit confusing to explain so I'll give an example. I'd written out out a note in the Notes app, then deleted the note and closed the app. Then later when I opened up Notes again and did the four-finger swipe to close something, I could see a small screenshot of the deleted note like it had 'remembered' the last screen it was on. This happens with all apps and the internet, meaning that when I scroll through open apps, sometimes I get a miniature glimpse of whatever email I was last writing or whoever's Facebook page I was last on, even though the app has since been closed and reopened.
Any way to solve this?

Unfortunately I misread G3Gators answer. I read the article now please read my demonstration to show the difference between open and closed apps
1 Turn the camera on. Double tap the home button. Notice the camera app has a live picture. That is a open app.
2 Turn the camera on. Single tap the home button. Wait a second. Double tap the home button. The camera app preview has a fuzzy picture. That app is closed.
3 Turn camera on. Double tap the home button, once again the camera is live. Tap one of the other app previews to open another app. Wait 10 seconds. Double tap the home button. The camera app preview is now black. Even though the camera was purposely left on the ipad turned it off. That app needless to say is closed.
Why do you need a history of the apps you used ? Your original question was why were you seeing apps you had used. What you were seeing was the history, not running apps.

Four finger swipe produces black screen

I have just discovered that a four finger swipe upward produces a black screen. Is there any news about this happening.

I just upgraded to iOS 6.1 and am experiencing this problem. It doesn't seem to affect anything else but I don't remember seeing this "extra" screen before. I tried restoring it to no avail. I have an iPad 2 32GB.
Anyone have any ideas?

Your tagline say that you are running iOS 4.2. It doesn't Work in iOS 4.2. you need to upgrade to iOS 5 if you want that feature. You need to update via iTunes on a computer for this update. After you update to iOS 5, you can do future updates OTA via WiFi.

Just upgraded to 10.5.6 and I now have access to the 4-finger swipe gesture...

Hmmm... so they DID give it to the new MBA's.
I wonder if anyone who RECENTLY bought a (not yet redesigned) 17inch MBP received this as well when upgrading to 10.5.6.
I checked after the update and noticed that the trackpad was now a standalone icon, but mine still only went up to 3 fingers. I wonder why they didn't just give it to everyone who has the hardware capability?

Four Finger Swipe Lands on Black Screen

Hi,
Gestures are working fine on my iPad 3rd Gen but while i use 4-finger-swipe to switch between apps i always end up with a blank (black) screen at the end of all apps open. Also, if i don't swipe back to an open app within 2 secs, i'm automatically pushed to the homescreen. Help

What happend to the four finger swipe?

I used to be able to swipe down with four fingers and all open windows would neatly arrange themselves so I could pick the one I wanted to use. Now, when I swipe the screens dims a little, but the active windows aren't there. If I minimize the windows and swipe, they arrange at the bottom in a new, smaller configeration. What happend to the swipe?

How do I disable firefox going forward and back with four finger swipe?

Whenever I swipe with 4 fingers on my mac, firefox goes forward or back depending on the direction. I want it to stop doing this. How do I make it so?

You can also try to set the related browser.gesture prefs to an empty string value on the about:config page.

Can the apple magic mouse spread out all the windows to pick one of the ones you have open? The four finger swipe?

I wasn't sure what it was called, but thats it. I've tried the actions it says and can't get it to work. Do you know if I need to have an update to the mouse or a newer version of OS? I currently have 10.6.8. I really appreciate your help

I tried switching between applications but to no avail, the application won't open. Can somebody tell me how to fix this?

Apple () --> System Preference --> Trackpad. Options are here.
With the heads-up view (four-finger swipe) you can either tab between apps are mouse and click to activate. Command-Q for quiting, tab-shift for reverse direction.

Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately no that does not solve it. Same as swipe it will get me there and it will show separate programs spaced out. The issue I am having is that all my open word files are bunched up in a pile on top of each other. I can see the edges of each one but I want them to be separated from each other enough that I can visually identify what file is what.
