FOUR letter song titles?!?"ZMMH?

Sorry to x-post on 2 discussions but it is a "using" question caused by an "installation and upgrade"
Since my iTunes 5 upgrade disaster and finally getting iTunes 4.9 back on my now functioning computer, I notice that some of the songs I managed to rescue from some sort of internal filing oblivion now have their titles replaced by FOUR capital letters (and also no longer are associated with albums). What the heck does this mean???
for example "ZMMH" "UYFR" . They aren't abbreviations as far as I can tell and I know that these songs used to appear with their proper titles.
I really don't want to plug an iPod into itunes for fear that it will rename the songs in the iPod as well. Is this a permanent destruction of my iTunes song titles or will this get miraculously fixed if iTunes 5 ever gets released in a functioning way?
Thanks for any info / help

I've got an iPod Shuffle. If I surf to it in Windows Explorer (where it shows up as USB storage device), I can see that my .mp3 files are renamed with 4 letter names, but the ID3 tags are still intact. I think the 4 letter name may be some kind naming convention used by the iPod's file system?
Don't know if this anything to do with your problem but it might be related.

  • Four letter song names on restore from backup

I did a "by the book" back up of all of my songs in my iTunes library to DVD. Since then, my external hard drive crashed. Fortunatly, I had burned copies of most of the songs that were not in the backup format. However, this did not include everthing that I want to recover. So, I have been trying to use the recover function from backup. I am able to recover the songs but they only have the four letter names and not the real song names. Is there a way to get the real names.
    Thanks for your help.

Can you give us more details on the version of iTunes you are using?  Unfortunately with recent versions of iTunes 10 "by the book" no longer includes burning to DVD and I am wondering if because this is no longer supported for burning it is also not supported for recovering.  It sounds to me like you are getting access to the files through some route that isn't standard and are seeing some kind of encoding that the backup feature used.

  • ITunes won't let me edit the song titles

I click on a song title, and click the Get Info and it won't let me edit the song.
The text is light gray instead of being black. When it's black I know I can edit it.
I don't know how this happened... can someone please help me??

    Its one of two things,
    1) You don't have the rights to those files/location
    or
    2) The file is read only. Don't change just change the folder rights, go right to the files and uncheck readonly.
Of course it could be something else I'm not aware of.

  • Oddly censored song title

So, I was just browsing Jo Stafford tunes (popular singer in the 1940's and 1950's, died today at the age of 90) and was very, very surprised to find the song "****-Eyed Optimist" listed in the ITMS as "C**k-Eyed Optimist". Now, I understand that sometimes song lyrics and titles may have, um... "Mature" content in them, but I'm pretty sure Rogers and Hammerstein didn't have that interpretation of ****-Eyed in mind when they wrote "South Pacific" in 1949. Did the global search and replace get away from someone?

I think the censoring software on this site (and maybe others too for all I know) is a little bit too touchy at times. We were discussing air circulation in G4s and referring to the casual four-letter term beginning with "s" as in reducing pressure to produce air inflow (similar to what you do with a straw in a drink, or the opposite of blowing) and it gets censored out. I mean, this says more about the thought processes of the software writers than all the posts I have been reading about keeping your computer from overheating.

  • Looking for app to recognize song titles

Just recently I bought myself an iPhone 5S and an iPad. One of the (many) reasons for this is the possibility to obtain an app for song titles or other music to be recognized so I can have this music downloaded on the devices I just bought. However, I don' remember the name of this app. Could somebody please give me its name so I can start collecting my favorites. Thank you in advance, I appreciate your help. Best regards, ER17

    Hello ER17
Congratulations on your purchase of a new iPhone 5s and iPad. Check out the two apps that I found that will listen to music to let you know what it is so you can purchase it later. If this is not what you are looking for, look at the other apps that customers have purchased to see if you can find it there.

  • ITunes is changing song titles and artists

iTunes appears to be infrequently and randomly changing the artist and song title tags of music in my library.  I usually just put my music on random shuffle, so it can take me a long time to actually identify errors -- like when I listen to music from a particular artist, or when I happen to glance at iTunes when a song iTunes has mis-re-named is playing.  So far, the errors seem to confined within single albums at a time, but that might just be because of the circumstances of me identifying the errors.
In the first case I noticed a while back, an album with six songs had their titles all jumbled up.  Each song was titled with an incorrect song title from the same album.  The artist, album, and genre tags all remained correct.  In the most recent case, two songs from a compilation album had their artist and song title tags overwritten with the info from a third track on the same album (so I ended up with three songs with the same title and artist).
Any idea what might be causing this apart from a crappy coding?

If iTunes and WMP are referencing the same copy of the MP3, then a tag change in one will be reflected in the other. If that is not what you want, you will need separate copies of the song.
Being picky, iTunes will write it's changes to the tag immediately (unless the file is locked as read-only) whereas WMP may choose to do it at some later point in time unless you use an option to "Apply media information changes". WMP will generally notice automatically that another appliation has modified the tag and updates it's library accordingly whereas iTunes only spots the change if it accesses the tag for some reason.
If you want WMP & iTunes to play nicely together you are best off disabling the WMP options for "Rearrange music in the rip folder..." and "Automatic media information update..." (you can still do so manually). I also find it best to change the WMP rip folder to the same as the iTunes Music folder. Letting iTunes "Keep the music folder organised" is a matter of choice (I choose not) but at least WMP can cope if your files get shuffled around by iTunes whereas the reverse is not the case.

this usually happens when a user moves or deletes files in the finder - a sure way to upset iTunes.
did you move or delete files in the finder ?
    I cannot locate the song.
if you let iTunes manage your library, all your content will be in <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music/iTunes/iTunes music (or media)/music. did you look there ? tried a spotlight search ?
if the files are really gone, and have been purchased from the iTunes store, see Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

  • HT204406 How can I browse directly by song title?

How can I browse directly by song title? Can't seem to do it on the new version.

    Hello Dick
When you are looking at your music, there should be some tabs towards the top. It will let you change the organization and the view types. The article below will give you some useful features that you can use.

  • The latest version of iTunes doesnt allow me to click on the song titles heading and locate the desired song from my Purchases. Are any others experiencing this?

Is anyone else having difficulty searching for their desired song using the latest version of iTunes? it used to be that I could click on song titles and just type in the first three or four letters and it would go straight to my song. This is no longer the case.

    Hi Hale,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below provides an overview of the new iTunes 12 interface.  If you are looking for a song in your library, you can click on the My Music tab at the top of the page.  At the top-right corner of the window, choose to view your music by Song, and sort by Name see an alphabetcial list of your music.
Using the new iTunes - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203128
iTunes 12 includes dedicated icons for music, movies, or TV shows, which make it easier to get to wherever you want to go in your library with a click. You can use the same controls to switch media types whether you’re browsing the iTunes Store or browsing your library.
You can even choose the media types you always want to see. To access more media types, click the More button (three dots) in the upper-left corner and click Edit. Select your favorite media types in the pop-up menu, then click Done.
    List view
To view your music by Song, Album, Artist, Composer, or Genre, click the current view under the Search tool in the upper-right corner. A pop-up menu of other views will appear. When you select one of the views in the menu, you'll see additional options for the view you're currently on, like Sort By Title or Rating.
I hope this information helps ....

  • My Itunes library is messed up. Wong titles. Wrong albums. Wrong everything. EX. I play a song by avenged sevenfold but then it plays a song by eminem. Song titles dont match what they play and neither does the artists name

My Itunes library is messed up. Wong titles. Wrong albums. Wrong everything. EX. I play a song by avenged sevenfold but then it plays a song by eminem. Song titles dont match what they play and neither does the artists name. Can I restart everything from itunes? I know this sounds cunfunsing, (and it is) but yeah.
Once again to try and clarify, The song(which itunes says is by artist, band, person, etc) is mixed up with another song out of my libary.
If there's something you dont get ask me!!! thanks

I'm experiencing the same issue. Not only do I get a messed up library, but since I've let iTunes handle my music files, they too have been shuffled around - placed in different album folders and sometimes given names of other songs... With quite a large library, the cleanup makes me feel a bit like Sisyfos pushing the rock uphill - it's a never ending story. Only positive side of this is that I get to play a lot of music quizzes while guessing who plays the song that is disguised as eg. Buddy from De La Soul, and then afterwards try to track down the real 'Buddy' as this has also found another folder to hide in...
Shazam has come to the rescue a few times so far...
@Apple: this is just not good enough!

  • ITunes causes 90% CPU usage when the info window scrolls the song title

What's up with that little info window under the iTunes title? When the song title exceeds the width of the window iTunes does a little right to left banner scroll of the text. Whenever this happens the CPU jumps to 90% and stays there. This is especially bad for radio stations that have long text message strings in their titles. I have to keep iTunes minimized to avoid this GUI bug.
This just started happening with iTunes 7 and 7.0.1
      Windows XP

iTunes on MBP in miniplayer mode and streaming to airport express.  Wife changes songs through iPad remote and the CPU spikes to 90% and stays there.  If I then select regular window mode, the CPU drops back to 7-8% (where it was before song change).  It doesn't happen if I change songs through the MBP iTunes, only through the iPad remote.  It's like it starts a process and doesn't close it out.
There's a couple of different things that can be going on here. Let's check on the one that involves the Mini Player first.
It seems to happen when the main iTunes player is set to Cover Flow rather than List view.
If you set iTunes to List view prior to switching to the Mini Player, does that stop the excessive CPU use while in Mini Player?

  • Need help coping song titles to clipboard

I wanted to search for some info online about a song I have in Itunes. I like to just copy and paste to google the song title from itunes, but not all songs will let me copy. Some will, by doing a slow double click or going into info and coping the title. These are songs I ripped from CD's I purched and I am only wanting the text copy...not the mp3. Is there an option that lets you copy or change the names of songs in Itunes?

Like I said above....when I do a slow double click, some songs will highlght in a box and let me cut or copy. Not all songs will highlight with a box when clicking twice to give me the copy option. I can also click once on some songs and go to info and make changes there, but the same songs that will not highlight with the box, will not let me change under info.

  • Update song titles in ipod

Hi I just got my 30gig video ipod. Some of my songs say track 6 or do not have the artist. When looking in itunes they say the same. Is there a way to get the names and artist for all my songs in library?

I have a question for you. I have done this on several songs that have had the wrong band name or the band name was in the song title.
These songs were previously sinked to my ipod (its the 30gig color one that shows movie moddle). Now when I sink it I can't find these songs when I go to say look under all songs for a band. If it helps I believe the ones that don't work the band already had songs with the right name in it.
Do I just have to clear my ipod and let it resink all the songs (which would take some time I believe) or is there a solution to get them to show. Thanks.

  • I can't change the name of my song title or artist

I tried both ways that the help topic told me about and neither of them work. I tried getting info from the internet and double clicking on the title to change "track 01" to an actual song title. Neither of these work.
    What do I do next?

I'f have this problem. -nod.- It wouldn't let me change genres on a song.
I tried clicking on the song, then clicking on the genre, and that didn't work, so I went into the folder where my itunes music all was, to the file itself.
The way my computer is, right click it once, then go to properties, click the summary tab, then advance, and just click on the blank space, and put in the information. Then when your done hit ok, and apply if you'd like.
Go back to itunes and delete the track you just editted from the library, then go back to the file and play it, and the information will be there.
Hopefully that helped, and if it was too jumbled I can unjumble it.

  • Playlist and Song Titles Problem

When I sync my new Shuffle (Gen 4) I want it to load 5 Playlists. It loads all of the songs but in random order not in playlists. When I look in the Ipod control folder under music there are three folders (F00, F01 & F02) and they are full of songs but again in random order. Plus the names of the songs have changed into a four letter code. Am I doing something wrong?
