Fps question

Hi,
So I cut something in FCP in a 23.98 fps timeline. (video was shot in 24pA). When I export using compressor i export with 23.98 fps. Strangely enough, when I bring the mpeg2 files into DVDSP and look at it in the inspector, it says 29.98 fps. Anyone know why this would be? Is it something to do with exporting in mpeg2?
Thanks!

Am I not understanding P.49 of the manual correctly?
No, the manual is misleading in this regard.
While, yes, your material has been encoded by Compressor as 23.98 fps, that's not actually a legal video rate according to the DVD-Video spec (video for NTSC DVDs must be encoded for 29.97 playback).
What actually happens is that Compressor adds the necessary flags - so that an interlaced player can add the 3:2 pulldown - when doing the encode. It's this (flag-inclusive) rate that DVDSP is reading. So, 29.97 Non-Drop is the correct reading for a 23.98 .m2v file imported into DVDSP. However, if you open your 23.98 .m2v file in QuickTime player, it will be read (also correctly) as 23.98 fps.
One Important Note: because this is all so confusing, some folks export a 23.98 QT movie - reference or otherwise - from FCP directly into DVDSP. In this instance, DVDSP reads QT files as 23.98 but DVDSP's internal encoder does not produce 23.98 .m2vs. What you'll end up getting is an interlaced 29.97 file with the pulldown frames actually inserted into the stream, defeating the purpose of shooting/editing/outputing in 23.98 fps.
In other words, stick with your current workflow, it's correct.

  • What is Little Endian / Big Endian in Sound settings for Apple Intermediate

    Hi.
In Final Cut Express, I am trying to splice together multiple video clips, combining footage from:
    1) HDV camcorder imported into iMovie 08 as 960 x 540 (the "lower resolution" option from iMovie '08 import), 16-bit @ 48 KHz (Big Endian), 25 FPS
    2) AVI files (DiVX 512 x 384, MP3 at 44.1 KHz, 23.98 FPS)
    3) Canon Camera "movie" files (Apple OpenDML JPEG 640 x 480, 16-bit Little Endian, Mono @ 44.1 KHz, 30 FPS)
    Questions
    1) What is this little endian / big endian thing?
    2) What is the best codec for me to edit in? My targets are NTSC DVD and also a HD version served via iPod connected to HDTV.
I am not sure what codec to convert everything to, so that I can edit without having to RENDER every time I do something. I tried to export using QuickTime Pro to convert to Apple Intermediate Codec but am not sure about the option for "Little Endian" (I am using an Intel Mac; I assume I do NOT use little endian? Can someone help clarify?)
    Many thanks!!!

    1. They're compression formats. Different codec use different compression schemes.
    2. You should convert your material to QuickTime using the appropriate DV codec and frame rate.
None of your material is HD. Some of it is low resolution, lower than even DV. There is no good way to make this material HD.

  • 2 Questions - Low Bit rate output. Low frames per second FPS, HELP! Live show sucked!

I thought I had all of my settings set for a stream using FMLE running through stickam. Everything was looking good but when we went live our bit rate output went down below 100kbs. I had set it for high kbs but allowed it to drop size to keep frame rate. As you can imagine our video stream went from really good looking to choppy and almost freeze frame half the time. I have no idea what I did wrong. Is it my Cable Internet? My modem? I will say that I ran a speedtest.net test and although the download looked abnormally low I had 1.6Mbs upload which I thought should be sufficient? I'm not sure what to do.
2nd question. I set FPS frame rate at 25fps but the output only allowed 15fps to the live stream. What is causing this? Is this a default number? It didn't seem what I set the frame rate at, the output was at 15fps. I saw ways to change the fps on the input but nothing on the output. What is the deal here?
So... to recap. How do I keep the bit rates high and constant on a stream and how do I increase my fps on a stream. Or, to make it real easy, how do I get the best video stream picture that is not choppy or freeze frame. Our show is now starting to be sponsored by entities and I can't have bad looking shows. Can anybody lead me in the right direction?

Whats your Encoding machine's configuration? I feel a low configuration machine can cause choppy streams.
Did you try with any other video source?
I feel you have enough bandwidth to stream.

  • Question for Tom or someone "Broadcast Smart" - Re: FPS

With all the griping here and other places about playing and editing 50 or 60 FPS and the way I understand it it only shows 25 or 30 FPS on a television anyway, so what's the point? I know my new Samsung HD television supports 1080P but I really thought, being it runs at 120/240 Hz, that it would play p60 footage by doubling or quadrupling the footage.
Could you explain this to me?

There are a lot of others as well at higher resolutions in Blu-ray, but nothing is doing these yet, and may never do them. I don't think anything is encoding it or playing it back at the moment.
Why is everybody worked up about it? No idea. Maybe because it's new, and whatever is new can be used to sell new hardware.
There are completely conflicting views on frame rates. There is a vast school of thought that believes 23.976 or 24 are the ideal frame rates and should always be used. The opposite end of the spectrum says the higher frame rate is always better, i.e. 59.94. Probably the only thing most everyone agrees on is to a drive a spike in the heart of interlacing as soon as the technology is possible. iMovie's solution of dumping one field, while working towards that ideal, is perhaps not the best way to do it. Unfortunately interlaced formats are heavily entrenched and when HDV was developed, an ideal opportunity to do this, Sony developed exclusively interlaced cameras. JVC went with 720p, which I think was a much better solution. Sony of course is the 600lb gorilla and pretty much has its way with whatever format it works with. It's only now as we're getting even more heavily compressed formats like AVCHD that camera manufacturers, Sony included, are finally dumping interlacing. Which is long away around of asking, once you get rid of interlacing what do you do with the frame rate, just keep full fields as in 1080p30, or double up and get 1080p60? Now you've reached the point of aesthetics where you have to decide would looks better to your eye and works with what you're shooting and the way you're shooting, and your choices range from 23.976 to 59.94, with a few stops in between. Whatever you pick currently you're basically being forced to view at 29.97, until the technology catches up and hardware is built that will encode and deliver whatever is within the range of frame rates available in the specification.

  • I need to make a DVD from 1080p 24 fps source - got a question about the framerate

    Hello,
I have a Premiere Pro project in 1080p 24 fps, and I have exported this as MPEG2-DVD (PAL Widescreen) in order to use this in Encore to create a DVD. I have the option of either 25 fps or 'Automatic (based on source)' for the framerate.
I tried both, but it seems they both result in 25 fps (when checking in Windows properties). These look choppy when played on my PC (I assume it's because it's missing one frame) - so what I did was to use 25 fps and enabled 'Use Frame Blending', which made it smooth, but also a bit more blurry when the camera is moving. I may have to accept this, but it would of course be nice if I could get rid of it
So I was wondering if there are any better solutions for creating this DVD from my 24 fps source?
    Thanks in advance

    Thank you
For interviews I can of course bring it in various formats - but I'm going to be sending out DVDs by post to a few companies (some ask specifically for a DVD, else I would just send a link to my Vimeo channel), so I don't have the option of sending multiple formats here (would get too confusing I think).
If the DVD doesn't play on their setup for some reason it's probably likely that they will just skip my application.
What I did do was to put an h264 HD version on the disc too, which could be played if watching the DVD on a PC - though it's probably going to be the SD version that will be seen as this starts automatically when you insert the disc.
I think it's a little weird that there aren't any options of exporting it to 25p with a speed-up instead of the thing it's doing now (I'm guessing it's repeating one frame every 25 frames which causes the choppy playback).

  • 10000 FPS Slow Motion Questions

I am shooting at 10000 fps using the Sony HVR-V1U. I am attempting to achieve a smooth slow motion shot. Final cut shows the footage as being very jerky and blurry. Does Final Cut support high fps and if so how do I import it properly so that I can either slow down the footage to play back smoothly or change the playback speed in Final Cut?
    Thanks

Uh...that camera cannot shoot 10000fps. The max it can shoot is 30fps. The SHUTTER can be switched to 1000 (but not 10,000 I don't think), but that is not the FRAME RATE, it is the SHUTTER speed. Two very different things.
Final cut shows the footage as being very jerky and blurry.
That is what a high shutter rate tends to do.
Does Final Cut support high fps
Not 10,000fps. Not that it matters, you didn't shoot 10,000fps.

  • 24 FPS Capture Question

    HI
I am trying to capture some 24 frames per second footage I filmed on a Panasonic DVX100 and one of the Final Cut Pro capture settings is for the 2:3:3:2 advnaced pulldown removal for 24fps. However, in the summary, it has the frames per second listed as 29.97?? Is this something that I may have accidently changed or is it saying that because it has to be caputured at 29.97 to be able to play it properly? Thanks

Both 24p and 24pa material is recorded as 29.97 to the tape; the tape does not slow down. 24pa material has an advanced cadence ADDED to the tape during recording and it is then removed during capture, giving you a final fps of 23.98. The capture preset reads 29.97 because the tape is still 29.97.
Once the clips are in your browser after your batch capture, you should see their vidrate says 23.98.

  • Quick Question qith 59.94 fps output

    Hello,
I have a varicam shot film that I need to export. It was edited in FCP 6 using a DVCPRO HD 59.94 FPS timeline. I would like to try making a 24p SD DVD, so would I export the full sequence, then use compressor's reverse telecine option in the mpeg encode? Or perhaps I was thinking of reimporting the 59.94fps final file back into a new sequence and using the DVCPRO HD Frame rate converter. What do you guys think?
    thanks

The removal of the redundant frames needed to be done at the time of capture...before you edited. Now that you have edited, they cannot be removed if you want a good looking project. BUT...if the project LOOKS 24p...if it has that look, then you are fine. There is no reason that you MUST BE at 23.98...as long as it has the film cadence look. Just burn the DVD.
#42 - Quick and dirty way to author a DVD
Shane's Stock Answer #42 - David Roth Weiss' Secret Quick and Dirty Way to Author a DVD:
The absolute simplest way to make a DVD using FCP and DVDSP is as follows:
    1. Export a QT movie, either a reference file or self contained using current settings.
    2. Open DVDSP, select the "graphical" tab and you will see two little monitors, one blue, one green.
    3. Select the left blue one and hit delete.
    4. Now, select the green one, right click on it amd select the top option "first play".
    5. Now drag your QT from the broswer and drop it on top of the green monitor.
    6. Now, for a DVD from an HD source, look to the right side and select the "general tab" in the track editor, and see the Display Mode, and select "16:9 pan-scan."
    7. Hit the little black and yellow burn icon at the top of the page and put a a DVD in when prompted. DVDSP will encode and burn your new DVD.
    THATS ALL!!!
NOW...if you want a GOOD LOOKING DVD, instead of taking your REF movie into DVD SP, instead take it into Compressor and choose the BEST QUALITY ENCODE (2 pass VBR) that matches your show timing. Then take THAT result into DVD SP and follow the rest of the steps. Except you can choose "16:9 LETTERBOX" instead of PAN & SCAN if you want to see the entire image.

  • Question about FPS and Audio Sync...

If I record a program from a broadcast HD source and it's transmitted at 24 FPS and I edit/export it in .wmv format at 30 FPS is it possible that it's causing any audio sync issues I might be having?  Should I be exporting it at 24 FPS?

Well, you're not likely to be able to get 24p video to work right in Premiere Elements regardless.
That said, no, the difference in frame rate alone will not cause your audio to go out of sync.
What you'll more likely see is poor blend of frames in your video. It might look jaggy or fuzzy on output.
That is IF it works at all. Premiere Elements technically only supports 25 fps PAL and 29.97 fps NTSC.

  • A question about fps

I am trying to build a project in iMovie '11 (v.9.0.4) but am being prevented from making progress because, when I cut, edit or change the speed of some clips, that seems to corrupt the entire project, and I can no longer spool through the clips in my project region. This problem seems to occur at random, but I suspect that it has something to do with the fps of the clips. Most of the clips I am using are 25fps, but a few of them are 24 and 30. Is this liable to cause problems? Is there something I can do to force all the clips to have the same frame rate? Or could this problem be more fundamental: i.e. is there some iMovie-related file tucked aay somewhere within my computer that could have become corrupted, which is causing the problems I am experiencing?
    Thank you!
    My mac is Version 10.7.3

for use in iM, I would convert all files to same standard.
use free tools such as Jes Deinterlacer, Mpeg Streamclip.

floblix I actually fixed it! :D
Found this post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/681762-msi-gt60-gpu-issues.html#post8767602 - He tells the old driver actually is more "Solid"
    Small Fast Guide:
    1. Downloaded the NON-Beta driver from my product support page (http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT60-0NC.html#/?div=Driver&os=Win7 64)
= NVIDIA Geforce GT670M Graphic Card (Version: 8.17.12.9562, Release Date: 2012-04-20)
    2. Then disconnected the internet
2.1. I used Driver Fusion - and removed my driver (http://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion)
    3. Rebooted
    4. Installed the Driver downloaded at MSI
    5. Profit
    - I got 120-250 FPS now, using the "OLD" Driver
No changes besides that - I'm surely NOT going to update my drivers!
I did NOT use Turbo for the testing to get these FPS
    NOTE!
    A thing to remember,
    1. go to nividia control panel
    2. Manage 3D settings
    3. Find your game
    4. Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance
    Gives about 20-50 FPS
    NOTE2!
Some games may have issues with older drivers
Beathazard won't work with the 670M if using the old driver, luckily we got the integrated (at least).

  • A few general questions about sequences, framerates (fps), audio sources

If I create a sequence in Pro that is 23.976fps, matching my audo from Canon T2i shot with 24fps... and an audio with 48hz... and then if I import an audio (music) with 44hz..
does it affect my output settings?
Another question. If i have 23.976fps sequence, and I output it for Vimeo (which they say should be 30fps) does it have ANY effect on video/audio synchronzation?

PrPro can handle most common Audio Sample Rates, like 44.1KHz @ 16-bit, and will Conform those Assets to edit in a 48KHz 16-bit Project. Other than an extra moment of the Conforming process, should not be an issue. This ARTICLE will give you some background on Conforming and Indexing.

  • MSI GE60 2PL Cooling Question

    Hi there,
I just bought a MSI GE60 Apache-629 Laptop. I Never owned a MSI Laptop but I am Very Satisfied so Far. Even though it doesn't have the NVidia GTX 860m , like the Apache Pro, I can Still Run Battlefield 4 on Medium Spec in 1920x1080.
My Question is should I Press the Fan Button to Speed Up the Fan when Playing Battlefield 4 ?
It seemed like my Laptop was getting VERY HOT !
    Is this Normal ?

    Hello ericpatterson89,
If you don't mind the fan noise and the power consumption while you're playing BF4, just speed it up. The temperatures of the CPU & GPU are always hot when playing these types of 3D FPS games, no matter which model. Some models are just bigger and thicker so that you don't feel so much heat on the surface. But actually they are all very hot in those cores.
So the best and accurate way is to run "Dragon Gaming Center" to monitor the temperatures of the CPU & GPU. Its icon can be found on the system tray (right-bottom of the screen). Just double-click it to open its window and it will show you the temperatures of both CPU & GPU.
There's an EC firmware inside the laptop which will automatically increase/decrease the RPM of the fan or boost up/throttle down the GPU power consumption according to the heat generated. So if you always turn the fan in full speed during the game play, according to the principle of the NVIDIA GPU, it will run as fast as possible if needed until it's throttled by EC firmware. In my past experience, setting the fan in full-speed during the game play will get more time running fast and smooth than setting it automatic. That's why I am saying that it depends on the user's tolerance to the fan noise...

  • Clientless SSL VPN and ActiveX question

    Hey All,
First post for me here, so be gentle.  I'll try to be as detailed as possible.
With the vast majority of my customers, I am able to configure an IPSEC L2L VPN, and narrow the traffic down to a very minimal set of ports.  However, I have a customer that does not want to allow a L2L VPN tunnel between their remote site, and their NOC center.  I thought this might be a good opportunity to get a clientless (they don't want to have to launch and log into a separate client) SSL VPN session setup.  Ultimately, this will be 8 individual sites, so setting up SSL VPN's at each site would be cost prohibitive from a licensing perspective.  My focus has been on using my 5510 (v8.2(5)) at my corp site as the centralized portal entrance, and creating bookmarks to each of the other respective sites, since I already have existing IPSEC VPN's via ASA5505, (same rev as the 5510 )setup with each of the sites.
First issue I've run into is that I can only access bookmarks that point to the external address for the remote web-server (the site has a static entry mapping an external address to the internal address of the web server).  I am unable to browse (via bookmark) to the internal address of the remote web server.  Through my browser at the office, I can access the internal address fine, just not through the SSL VPN portal.  I am testing this external connectivity using a cell card to be able to simulate outside access.  Is accessing the external IP address by design, or do I have something hosed?
Second issue I face is when I access the external address through the bookmark, I am ultimately able to log onto my remote website, and do normal browsing and javascript-type functions.  I am not able to use controls that require my company's ActiveX controls (video, primarily).  I did enable ActiveX relay, and that did allow the browser to start prompting me to install the controls as expected, but that still didn't allow the video stream through.  The stream only runs at about 5 fps, so it's not an intense stream.
I have researched hairpinning for this situation, and "believe" that I have the NAT properly defined - even going as far as doing an ANY ANY, just for testing purposes to no avail.  I do see a decent number of "no translates" from a show nat:

192.168.2.0 is my corp network range
192.168.2.171 is my internal IP for corp ASA5510
97.x.x.x is the external interface for my corp ASA5510
192.168.16.34 is the internal interface for the remote ASA5505
64.x.x.x is the external interface for the remote ASA5505
192.168.17.0, and 192.168.18.0 are two other private LANS behind the remote 5505
As you can see, I have things reasonably wide open - with no port restrictions on this one yet - this is for troubleshooting purposes, and it will get restrictive as soon as I figure this out   Right now, the ASA5510 is pretty restrictive, and to be brutally honest, I'm not certain I'm even using the packet tracer 100% proper to be able to simulate coming from the outside of the network through my ASA5510, out to a remote ASA5505, and to a web server behind that 5505.  I'm sure that the issue is probably going to be a mix of ACL's between the 5510, and the 5505.
I guess the main question, is Clientless SSL VPN really a good choice for this, or are there other real alternatives - especially since my client doesn't want to have to install, or use an actual client (like AnyConnect), nor do they want to have an always-on IPSEC VPN.  Am I going about this the right way?  Anyone have any suggestions, or do I have my config royally hosed?
Thanks much for any and all ideas!

Hey All,  I appreciate all of the views on this post.  I would appreciate any input - even if you think it might be far-fetched.  I'm grasping at straws, and am super-hesitant to tell my customer this is even remotely possible if I can't have a POC myself.  Thanks, in advance!!

  • Questions on heat, hard drive, graphics 1.5GHz

I am considering a new Powerbook 12 inch to replace the 15 inch TiBook I just traded in at Powermax -- stretching the budget to the current 15 is tough, especially when there still seem to be at least some firmware questions if not hardware -- and the small 12 is tempting. Whatever it is, it has to be a Mac, and due to monitor spanning, it has to be a Powerbook.
    So some questions.
How is the 12 inch these days for heat? Obviously heavy hard drive activity (such as all the demos they run on it in the Apple Store) will heat up the left side wrist rest given where the hard drive is, but how is it for typing on in actual day-to-day use?
Anyone tried the 100GB 5400RPM BTO? Of course the 80GB 5400 is standard, but is there any significant speed difference between the two (denser platters usually mean faster transfers).
How about the Nvidia 5200 graphics card? Any bottlenecks I should be aware of compared to a Radeon 9550/9600/9700?
And, any difference in durability compared to the 15?
Lastly, how about the display? They seem a bit dim in the store, but they also seem like they have a jiggered stock profile. How about when you hardware profile it properly (I have a ColorVision Spyder2Pro)?

As far as video chipsets go, a 5200 is not going to run with the ATi 9600 or better in terms of fps for the gpu, I'm not sure about the 9550. The 9600XT, and I'm using one in a desktop, roughly runs with the 5700 Ultra and a little behind the 5900 in nvidia's lineup. I'd say as far as notebook gpu's go, all those gpu's are dated and are in need of revising. The 5200 is a couple years old and so are the ATi gpu's, that is for desktops. But when you look @ PB specs, a 9700 128 MB video vs 64 MB FX5200, the 9700 is way ahead.
