FR: Opt/Alt+Shift selects entire word

Opt+the arrow keys move from word to word like in pretty much every application, but when you add the Shift key you lose that functionality and end up going through each character. This is a super useful thing to select a few words quickly, and it's even more helpful in the code windows where often more than you want gets selected by double-clicking.
Also, is there an official place to post feature requests? The wish list page doesn't have Edge Animate listed, and the actual Edge page said to do it here, but just in case...

All you need to do is flatten your layers to get a background layer.

How to select entire words in Illustrator CS4???

I've just upgraded to CS4, and Illustrator has lost the ability to select entire words. I can't even click on a point in the text and drag to the beginning or end. Can't double-click on a word. Can't click, then shift-click anywhere else. Nothing works. I did update my legacy text when I opened the document. Any other ideas?

I tried the other things suggested, but they didn't work, either. I ended up creating a new document and copying all of the text into the new document where it can be selected like normal. Go figure...

Automatically select entire words in Mavericks?

In Word 2011 there is the option to "automatically select entire word[s]." Does anyone know if there is a way to enable a similar option for the entirety of text selection in Mavericks?

You can double-click and drag (hold down on the second click) to select entire words at a time. Or if you prefer selecting using the keyboard, hold down shift+option while tapping the left or right arrow keys.

Why does my cursor not automatically select the entire word when I try to select text by starting/ending in the middle of a word?

In any other browser I've used (or word processor, for that matter) when I select text using my mouse cursor, if I start and/or end in the middle of a word, it automatically selects the whole word when I'm selecting more than one word. But for some reason this is not happening in Firefox. If I try to select say 3 words, and I start in the middle of the first word and end in the middle of the last word, it will only select those parts, not all 3 words entirely.

Firefox allows to select part of a word. You can select a word with a double click and use Shift + left click to set the end of the selection, so you need to click at the end of the last word instead of in it.

What do you mean there was "no effect?" I'm not aware of any effects.
It looks like that Service is also in the App Store. From their screen shots, the services are prefaced with WordService:

After installing, you should now have those text services in your Services menu. You can then add shortcuts in the Keyboard System Prefs.
Most Apple apps have a Transformations menu in the Edit menu. You can Make upper, lower, and Initial caps with those. I would stick with Word Services, but you can make Application Shortcuts for the items in the Transformations menu.
Again, in Keyboard System Prefs, Under Applications, Click the Add button on the right side pane.
Set it for All Applications
Enter the menu command exactly as they appear in the Transformation menu (separate entries for each),
Make Upper Case
Make Lower Case
Capitalize
Give them a shortcut.

Selection tool in Illustrator is inconsistent! Shift select to add, alt select to deselect!

Selection tool seems to be a popular topic in the feature request forums, but I didn't find anyone complaining about exactly the same thing I am going to suggest.
If I want to select a bunch of points with the Direct selection tool I usually drag a marquee to start selecting, but often am not able to select all the points I want in one move, so I have to shift drag to select additional points. This is when the annyoing thing happens. Points that are previously selected becomes deselected if I drag over them again, while points that where not selected becomes selected. This is confusing and feels quite messy. The inconsistency I am talking about happens when I use the lasso tool instead. Now I can deselect with Alt and add to selection with Shift (good behaviour!) This is also the way it works in Photoshop.
Shift select to add, alt select to deselect! This should be the behaviour for all selection tools in all Adobe programs! It would be much more consistent with Photoshop as well. Right now using the alt-modifier with the Direct selection tool gives you the group select tool instead, so that would have to change. Maybe you can add an option for this old behavour in preferences for lecacy reasons...
If this option is somehow possible allready then I might be missing something, but I didn't find anything like that in preferences.

Make sure Object Selection by Path Only is turned off.
If that does not help, reset your preferences.

Left Alt+Shift combination

When I click left Alt+Shift in order to change keyboard language, the Edit window (either in Code or in Design view) looses the focus, so I can't type anymore. I have to use the mouse (click where the text should be) and then start typing again.
Please note that it only occurs in Edit window (where the contents of the page are) and not in any other place. For example I don't have the problem when I'm in the Properties Panel and I want to type an ID in the second language (1st keyboard language is English, 2nd is Greek). Furthermore the problem is only DW (CS4) related. All the other applications are working as they should (Word, Excel, Photoshop, Firefox, etc).
The weird thing is that, when I first open DW the combination works OK, but after a while it doesn't. Especially, after I use the Snippets panel.(select a snippet and click the Insert button).
Any thoughts?

This is a known issue with switching keyboard layout in Dreamweaver. Switching keyboard layout results in the toolbars being redrawn. You can submit a bug report/feature request through the form at http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform, but there's nothing you can do about it apart from use the mouse to refocus the program after switching.

Is there a way to shift select multiple objects in layer palette, not just highlight multiple objects?
I would want to do this when I have a bunch of objects hidden under some other objects on the artboard. This feature is available in PSD, so I assume Illustrator should have it.

I'm using CS4 & below.
Highlighting object - click on object in layers palette & it turns blue
Select object - click on object in layers palette to the right of the circle, which creates a square, and selects the object on the artboard
How do I shift-select multiple objects in the layers palette...select 50 objects with a click, then a shift-click? Shift-select works for highlighting, but not selecting. On most programs shift-select is used to grab a bunch of stuff...:0)
In the past I have inadvertently selected multiple objects in the layers palette, by somehow alt?-dragging over the layers...or something...I can't re-create it.

Unable to copy and paste entire word doc.

Whoever designed the form didn't do a very good job... They probably wanted to prevent the field text from overflowing (in which case it won't be visible when printed), but the information they provide is wrong. There's no way you could fit a thousand words into this form field since it will only take 3650 characters (and a space is a character), and the average English word is usually considered to be 5 letters long. So you can probably get around 600 words into this area (600 ~= 3650 / (5 letters + 1 space per word)).
Bottom line is this: either edit your text, or contact your school and ask them to adjust the form for you. If they set the font size to Automatic and remove the character limit, the problem will basically be solved (although the text will become smaller if you enter a very large amount of it).

How do you select multiple words using a Magic Trackpad?

I know how to select multiple words with my mouse, but cannot figure out how to do it using my new Magic Trackpad. Here's the deal:
Let's say you want to select "cannot figure out how to" in the sentence above. With my mouse, I'd place the cursor somewhere over the word "cannot," double-left-click and keep holding the button down. Then, dragging to the right, it would select each word in its entirety as I moved along the sentence. I do this all the time since it is a very quick way to select text.
Okay, so how do you do this with the Magic Trackpad?
I try a similar behavior, but it doesn't work. If I double-tap on "cannot," for example, one of two things happens. Either only the word "cannot" is highlighted and dragging does nothing to highlight more text. Or, if I'm quicker with the drag (aka swipe) right, it will select one character at a time starting from the cursor position when I double-tapped and not entire words, as I want.
I'm stumped. Anyone?

The only good way seems to be by using the physical click on the Trackpad. Double physical click then drag. Much the way it's done on the mouse.

Alt left selection inconsistency

I will demonstrate this by an example:
"I like ice cream."
Problem one
If I place the cursor just to the right of "ice" and presses in sequence:
shift+alt+left then shift+left
"_ice_" becomes selected instead of the expected "_ice".
When done the mirrored way: cursor left of "ice" and pressing
shift+alt+right then shift+right
"ice_" becomes selected which I would expect normally but is totally inconsistent with the "_ice_" selection described above.
Problem two
If I place the cursor just to the left of "ice" and presses
shift+alt+right then shift+left
"_i" becomes selected instead of the expected "ic" in "ice".
When done the mirrored way: cursor right of "ice" and pressing
shift+alt+left then shift+right
"ce" is selected just as expected.
Summary
After selecting anything with shift+alt, shift+right works as expected as in any other program. However when shift+left is pressed after a selection, Pages behave inconsistently with other Apple apps such as Safari and Finder. This unexpected behavior can get me quite upset at times because I use that kind of selection all the time in my work flow when editing text. I have experimented quite a bit with it and these problems seem to be consistent.
Is it a bug or is it a "feature" that can be disabled?
Please confirm if you can recreate this or if it works differently for you.
I also noted the same problem in text fields in Keynote which I would expect as they are closely related.
Any help is appreciated.

Update: It seems that Apple is aware of the bug.
For others experiencing the same problem, a functioning but awkward work around is to use the commands ctrl+b and ctrl+f instead of arrow keys when selecting:

If Firefox doesn't add a file extension then you need to add a valid image file extension (.jpg) yourself.

Opt/Alt keyboard shortcuts problem

Opt (Alt) variant of some commands work from menus but not by keyboard shortcut when an Adjustment Layer is targeted. Ps CS6, OS X 10.6.8.
Two that I've noticed so far…
Stamp Visible can be performed by pressing Opt when picking Merge Visible from the Layer menu, but the key combo Opt+Shift+Cmd+E results in a refusal beep and no new layer.
New Layer without dialogue, Opt+Shift+Cmd+N raises a beep instead of working. In addition to working from menu, it works by clicking the icon at bottom of Layers Panel.

Just making sure: Is the currently targeted layer visible when you're trying these things?

Shortcut [ALT]+[SHIFT]+[P] doesnt work with Vista ultimate??!

hello
when i try to create a new position key frame in the time line, i always used the shortcut [ALT]+[SHIFT]+[P]. on other versions before Vista it was working perfectly.
on the Vista ultimate though, instead of creating a key frame, i get the windows "mediaplayer" loading up, every time i use this shortcut.
i looked for this shortcut to change within media player, but couldn't find it.
is there a way to change the shortcut inside after effects?
i am using after effect CS3.
all other shortcuts (like [ALT]+[SHIFT]+[J] or [ALT]+[SHIFT]+[S]) are working fine...

Go to the start/Windows button, click and in the search box type "Windows Media Player." DON'T select the icon (thereby opening the application).
INSTEAD, right click the icon for the media player and choose "Properties." You will see a box for shortcut...just delete the one that's there and it will now show as "None."

DV CS3 Alt+Shift problem

hello i have problem whith the dreamweaver. i need the
STANDARD PANEL in DV CS3 turned ON. everithing is ok but if i
switch other keyboard leangue (alt+shift or if i select the
keyborad language from the icon on bottom on the screen) the
standard panel is turned off ! i testing this in win XP and VISTA
system and i have the some problem.. Please help my because it`s

Alt Shift resets visible toolbars

In Windows, switching keyboard layouts is often assigned to
Alt-Shift.
In Dreamweaver, Alt-Shift resets the toolbar set to
'Document' and 'coding', which apparently is the default.
If you have any other toolbar open, for example 'Standard'
(which has Save and Save All icons), it disappears.
Is there a way to modify the default set or is there a
keyboard shortcut to make it reappear?
