Downloaded a large compilation album from iTunes which appears in my music library as a series of albums devoted to each artist. How can I combine them back into one or two albums?

I fixed the split albums eventually by selecting all the tracks and clearing each field in turn and reentering data, all but one obstinate album glued together again now
re the artwork, discovered I had caused a problem by altering album titles to make appear chronologically on my ipod, by removing the change temporarily I was able to get itunes to locate some albums. but because it wont do all eventually I found quickest way forward to find pix in google images and paste in manually. by the way, I found out the hard way it pays to check carefully whether itunes has grabbed an album of tracks or a whole artist before executing a group edit - I accidentally selected a dozen albums which got merged and I have spent a whole afternoon returning 250tracks to their rightful place!

Fragmented albums after updating to latest version.

have downloaded latest version of itunes and now a lot of my albums have been split into seperate songs in the playlists.
is there a fix for this or have i got to spend hours changing the get info section,.these albums were all fine on previous version.
any help much appreciated,

Generally setting a common Album title and Album Artist will fix things. For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.
It is possible that the initial column sort selections order may not have migrated properly from the last build, but the overall rules for sorting and grouping things haven't changed. Some orders are album friendly, most aren't, and mixed artists on the same album usually needs a common album artist. There are also settings to Group Compilations and Use Album Artists which alter the behaviour slightly.

Itunes rearranges my music and divides albums

iTunes takes albums I listen to and seperates them into albums of one or more songs. It takes them out of order and is impossible ,at least for me, to reasemble so I have these fragment albums that aren't what I want.

Please post technical information, such as Operating System.
Here's what has worked for me:
Use a computer without iTunes, or before you install iTunes back on your old computer, plug the iPod in. It should register as removable storage (an external hard drive).
Go to that hard drive, copy everything to your main hard drive. "Safely remove hardware." Install iTunes, start iTunes, plug in your iPod.
Set iTunes settings to copy over all music from imported folders into the main iTunes folder (beneath "My Documents" >> "My Music"). Then import the old music back into the new iTunes install.
If you need more detailed or specific information . . . two suggestions: 1. post whatever technical information you know / have. 2. take a class at a community college and learn about computers.

Navigate the page from the local directory and the page works.

From what I understand, once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.

One music album fragments into many. How to prevent?

(This is a problem that happens when I use my preferred method of viewing albums, "show items in a list, grid or with cover flow)
When I import a single album which is a 2 or 3 CD set onto i-tunes, it shows each CD as a separate album, even though they're all part of the same album. When I try to drag the second or third album into the first, so as to merge them, I am unable. So, for example, I have three YES albums showing on itunes, which are in fact just one album consisting of three cds.
Even more annoying is "Johnny Cash at Madison Square Garden." It's a single CD with only about 14 songs, but because some songs are listed as by "Johnny Cash," others by "Johnny Cash and the Carter Family," and etc., it has broken up one album into four little albums. Two of the "albums" only have one song each.
Is there anyway to make iTunes understand that a double cd album, or a single album with a few variant performers, are in fact just one album? Can I merge them so each album really looks just like one album, not like many?

How do you sort downloaded albums (fragmented)

I have down loaded an album but on screen it gives multiple artwork as if each song is a single - it should only be one album and i cant seem to sort it to show as an album, only when in a playlist can i bring all the songs together.

Select all the tracks in the album. File>Get Info. Retype the Album and Album Artist fields to insure that they are all identical. If there are any differences, even a trailing space, the tracks won't sort as an album.

Can I combine or merge songs into a single album?

When I view my albums in iTunes, many are fragmented into several albums. This is especially true for albums that contain songs by several artists, like "Saturday Night Fever" but also for albums by the same artist like "Future Shock" by Herbie Hancock. the track "Rockit" appears as the single entry (track 1) for one album, and tracks 2-6 appear as a second album.
I've tried dragging and cut/pasting and can't seem to get the songs onto one album. This is especially frustrating for albums like "Saturday Night Fever" where it appears in iTunes as almost a dozen albums with one track each.

This shouldn't have been that complicated, but I had to stumble across the tick box for "is compilation"
* I have "edit/preferences.../advanced/group compilations when browsing" box checked but the individual tracks in a compilation still show up as separate albums. Didn't help
* Got joy only after fincing and checkint the compilations box in the GEt Info/Info box for each song in the compilation

One album multiple folders

I have 160g classic. Several album are broken up into separate files or folders...therefore some albums have 5 or 6 or more covers. I have gone into the info and made sure compliations is unchecked. I have made sure the album title, album artist and artist for each track are identical. I have made sure each track is numbered. I have also gone into my windows folder and made sure all the tracks are in one folder but none of this works. A few of them are 2 disc sets...one disc is fine and the other is fragmented. I expect them to have 2 album listings not more. I have tried to sorting, have read the user guide and I don't know what I am missing. Then I have an artist whom I have 7 albums of and his name is listed 7 times on my ipod artist lists. This may not be a big deal but I guess I am a little ocd. Any suggestions or ideas of what I have not figured out?

Severe screen fragmentation

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a 2.26GHz MacPro with 12GBs of RAM. Notable installed software includes Adobe Master Collection and Final Cut Pro.
I have 3 (standard) Nvidia GeForce GT 120 graphics cards. I also have three 27" cinema displays, one for each graphics card.
I'm running OSX 10.6.8 (snow leopard).
I am a video editor/graphic artist and spend a minimum of 8 hours on my computer a day. More often than not, the computer works as a render engine overnight while I am away. I have a tendancy to stream video while I'm working (on something that doesn't require my ears). I manage to do a complete shut down about once a week.
About 8 months ago, while working and streaming video, the centre display went completely haywire. Click the link to see a screen cap.

Basically, the screen will (very suddenly) fragment and those fragments will get worse and move around if you try to move the mouse. If you click and drag something from the affected screen onto one of the other screens, the problem will stay behind. If you drag it back to the affected screen the problem will reappear. The only way to stop the fragmentation and return the display to normal is to do an entire reboot of the system. Nothing else will get rid of the fragmentation. At this point I thought it was a graphics card issue since only the one screen was being affected. A few weeks after this first issue, the problem starting happening on 2 out of 3 of the screens. I had two certified Apple engineers come in to try and fix the problem. Neither one could find any issues with the machine whatsoever. All the hardware was tested. All the software was tested and updated. PRAM was flushed several times. Nothing worked. They both said they thought it was the display itself causing the issue since the issue didn't appear to travel between displays. In fact, one of the engineers called Apple and Apple didn't not know what the problem was but confirmed that his theory was most likely accurate.
So two weeks ago I disconnected both of the displays that are causing issues. I replaced one of the displays with a brand new one I had lying around (simply can't work with only one screen). For a full week everything was fine. The issue didn't come back. So I had thought that the issue had been isolated and resolved.
Until a few days ago. Quite suddenly, my left-hand display fragmented one day while editing. I did a reboot and it happened again within a few hours. It has happened at least once a day on that screen ever since. This morning the problem appeared on my right-hand screen (the brand new one I just plugged in). Oddly enough, the issue has never happened on two screens simultaneously.
Sometimes trying to tile the active applications will force the screen to behave, but most often it doesn't. On a bad day, if I try to tile my apps, the screen experiencing the issue will simply not respond to the command. The other windows will but everything on the affected screen does not tile.
I don't know what else to do or check. I told the engineers that my feeling was that it might the logic board. They adamantly told me that the logic board could not be causing these problems. Nor the graphics cards. Their rationale was that if it was a hardware issue it would appear all the time, not periodically.
The best they could come up with, besides the problem being the actual display, was that I'm getting electrical interference from a large HP plotter that I sit next to.
Has anyone else experienced a problem like this one?
I'd like to avoid just straight up buying another machine, but I'm at a complete loss.

I've run countless tests on the RAM itself.
That is not necessary on a Mac Pro tower, because it uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory, unless you have deliberately defeated that excellent feature by installing non-ECC RAM. The RAM stores syndrome bits (coded check bits) that can be used to detect and correct ALL single-bit errors on the fly. Double-bit Errors are detected and are intended to cause a kernel panic.
As long as ECC shows as enabled, and all memory shows as present at its expected size, and status of each module is OK, they are fine. Do not spend any more time looking at main RAM memory in your Mac Pro tower.
RE: your screenshot.
This shows no hardware failures likely to be detected by a diagnostic. The kinds of issues shown in your screenshot could be caused by software, but that is unlikely.
Debugging in general:
You have been through the easy solutions. Now you should substitute additional KNOWN GOOD items for potential problem items, BUT: you need to be very, very methodical, and only change one thing at a time.
For example, have you swapped display cards with each other? Have you tried a new card? Does the problem follow the card? The slot it is in? The display attached? The cables?

ITunes 10's Album by Artist column not good for assorted artist albums

If a given album has selections done by different groups or artists, iTunes will fragment the album and create as many little groups for it as there are different performers on the album. This feature became a big problem for me with an album of big band music with presumed many different groups represented that I have and had put onto iTunes. For a few of the selections, I was able to identify the band leader (the album came from an analogue medium, a reel-to-reel tape, that had no titles or artists information) and had these names entered into iTunes. With the old iTunes version, the album would be shown in one place with all the selections in order and with a few of them showing an artist name.
I found that some of the music files were misnamed and I wanted to add names to another group of generic file names. All these changes caused iTunes to report it couldn't find the songs and needed my help to locate them again. No trouble here, as I would expect nothing less and was familiar with this from other similar cases. What was an unpleasant surprise was that the selections with identified band leaders separated off from the anonymous group and from one another, based just on the names of these band leaders. I had to slowly scan through close to 1900 songs to find the all of the stray pieces of the album.
If I didn't find all the album titles with new file names, the files would had quietly remained not found and probably would have been deleted from the iPod. ITunes doesn't alert to unfound files at startup; one has to click each name for Get Info in order to get the dialogue for locating the file again.
Even if iTunes wouldn't keep all the pieces together (and I understand why it didn't), if the Next and Previous functions would allow me to step through all the tracks of such an album, I could get by, but this is not so either. Next and Previous navigate just to the physically adjacent songs, not the logical neighbors.

I'm not sure where you were putting in the band leader information - my guess is you used Album Artist instead of just plain Artist - but I think I answered this in your other post.

Yes, this is a pain. iTunes used to show these unfound tracks more readily. THere is a script that has been around or years that will find them, though. It's "FindDeadTracks" from this page:

That all depends on what column you've sorted your tracks by. I usually sort my library by Date Added, with new tracks at the top. A new CD I've imported would be at the top and all the tracks from it together. Very easy.
Other sort columns could also keep the tracks together so you could use Previous/Next.

i have an late '09 27" iMac upgraded to yosemite (I've accepted all upgrades from apple along the way). i have my alternating backgrounds & screensaver pointed at my iPhoto album. so why does a photo of half dome pop up occasionally? where is the photo stored? i have been to yosemite many times and do love the scenery there, but i'd like to be in charge of my screensaver. i've tried looking for the photo by name/name fragment, but of course, if apple doesn't want us to find it, we won't find it. i don't like apple preventing me from setting up background/screensaver to my liking. apple makes the computer for the rest of us.

have you noticed for yourself if these photos are always mixed with one's selection via system preferences?
Actually no. What I have always done was this: I have a collection of custom desktop pictures I made a custom folder for the pictures & placed them inside the Machintosh>Library>Desktop Pictures folder.
Then I went into System Preferences>Desktop & Screensaver>Desktop, clicked on the plus sign to add my custom picture folder.
Restarted my comp.
Never had any issues by doing the above. I have always done it this way since the Tiger OS.

Composer view - fragmented composer listings

I am very pleased to have the new Composer view in iTunes 11.0.2 - it is something that I have long wanted for my classical music collection. (so well done Apple).
However I am frustrated that the listings are fragmented - almost every composer appears 2 or 3 times in the list, (e.g. Erik Satie; Erik Satie (1866-1925); and Satie,Erik). Some albums atributed to one variant, some to another. How can I easily rationalie this? To get all of my Satie in one place, and all of my Beethoven in another, for 95 composers.

To answer your question, the composer in the id3 tags need to be exactly the same. For example if you want to keep "Erik Satie (1866-1925)", you need to change "Erik Satie" and "Satie, Erik" to "Erik Satie (1866-1925)"
This can be done easily by right clicking the composer name that you want to change in the composer view and selecting "Get Info". Copy paste "Erik Satie (1866-1925)" to the composer field and click ok.
A caveat is that sometimes itunes would selects the currently highlighted composer,instead of the one you right clicked on. Best way to make sure is to just highlight it first, then right click on it. Remember that this process is NOT undoable so be careful not to change say, Erik Saito to Erik Satie.
If Itunes allows adding thumbnails to composers, I'll be even happier!

Logic Crashing = Album on hold!!

Hey guys,
Newbie to the board here. Driven mad with frustration as I'm trying to finish an album in Logic Pro 7 and half of the song files crash in exactly the same way all the time which is making life hard! The crash happens while playing the song and I get the code 'Logic unexpectedly quit'. Sometimes, for variety, all the audio files disappear from the arrange window before crashing.
The error code that it spits out follows. If anyone can shed some light on this, I (and the rest of the band) would be most grateful!

Okay, I don't understand that error report, but just to give some quick feedback, I see you have the same G5 as me but are running 10.3.9 (last iteration of 10.3, which is good) & Logic 7.0.1.
I'm not familiar with your sound card.
I would check hardware connections, then drivers. Have a look in the Core Audio pane & see if you can spot anything dodgy or unexpected. Have you performed any updates recently? See if a more recent driver for your card is available (a system update may have left your current driver out-of-date).
Could some of your Audio files have become corrupted or fragmented? If you have them backed-up, you could try replacing them from back-up.
I'm sure others will have better ideas to try before the following, but 10.3.9 is quite old now. Have you considered updating to Tiger or Leopard? Ditto Logic — the latest version of 7 is 7.2.3.
As I say, there are probably simpler fixes, but installing updates may encompass those anyway.

1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?
