Frame-By-Frame / DVD Player application is missing?

Hey everybody!
So I finally made the witch and got myself a nice new macbook pro about a month ago! Everything is going well with so far, but I may have just run across a bit of a small problem.
I'm an animator, and I like to be able to study animations frame by frame. I can't really seem to do this in Front Row. Or if I can, I can only go forward frame by frame. I need to go back and forth, one frame at a time. Am I missing a shortcut in Front Row for this?
Furthermore, I can't watch DVDs in front row in any other mode than full screen... I'd rather have it in a small window. This also doesn't seem to be an option with FR.
I would have thought that the program "DVD Player" would help me out, but I can't seem to find it on my computer! So I searched through the site here, and I found an installer - Great! Except that when I run it, I get an error message saying "You cannot install DVD Player on this volume. A newer version of this software already exists on this volume".... But... But... WHERE IS IT??? I've searched my computer for it, but it doesn't show up anywhere. Yet the installer thinks that there's a new version here somewhere.
Anybody have any god ideas as to what's up, or what I can do to watch DVDs in a window (not full screen), frame by frame, back and forth?
Thanks!
-Pete

So it seems I fixed most of my problem(s)!
I found a way to extract DVD Player from my install disks (Pacifist). So at least I have that working now. But I still can't frame step backwards... Annoying, but that just seems to be the way, I suppose.
If anybody has any suggestions about working around that problem, that would be greatly appreciated - Otherwise, the full screen and DVD Player problems are resolved.
Thanks!
-Pete

  • DVD Player Application

This is an insanely dumb question, but I accidentally dragged the DVD Player application to the trash and deleted it. I thought i was getting rid of the shortcut on the desktop, actually deleted the program. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to reinstall that program, perhaps somewhere on the Apple site i could download it from, or from a start-up disc. If possible, without having to reinstall OS X. I know this question makes me sound dumb, but i haven't watched a DVD in months and i miss it.
    THANKS FOR ANY HELP!

    Hi Pirate,
    Welcome to Apple Disucssions
You can download DVD Player 3.1.1 from here. Then upgrade to the newest one for your system.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon

  • Lost DVD Player Application

    Hey,
I must have accidently deleted my 'DVD Player' application,
I've looked in my 'Applications' folder & done a spotlight search & it doesn't show up, except a folder called 'DVD Player' in the 'Library'.
How do i get it back?
    Plz help!
    Thanks

Search www.versiontracker.com for Pacifist, and use it to extract a new DVD Player from your OS X install disc.

  • Frame by Frame backwards with DVD player?

It seems like DVD player is missing a simple yet key function to step backwards frame by frame. I work in the film biz and frame accuracy is essential. PC and home based players allow you to step backwards frame by frame, how can i do it on my Mac?

My guess is going to be that it has something to do with the GOP structure of DVD video files. You know, of course, that MPEG2 files on DVDs only have specific key frames in the file and then the rest are just the changes in color etc.
My guess is that hardware, like a DVD player, may cache more information at one time and therefore have an re-assembled frame stored from playing forward.
But, that doesn't explain why DVD Player wouldn't do the same, seeing as it could concievably have and unlimited amount of memory to store the re-assembled frames from the DVD file.
I sure would be handy for when I have people checking my work. They could find a specific frame where an error is or starts.

  • Frame Capture In DVD Player?

Is there any way to do frame captures in Apple's DVD Player app? I know you can bring in Preview to Grab the Window, but is there a quick way to do it within the DVD player?

No plug-ins or shareware Apps to do this? I would imagine that a lot of people use this feature. PowerDVD for the PC comes with it built-in.

  • After installing Mavericks, my DVD player icon is missing from my launchpad. How do I get it back?

I installed Mavericks yesterday and then tried to watch a movie. That is when I noticed the icon for the dvd player is no longer in the launchpad. If I put the disk in the drive it opens on it own or if I search for DVD player it will come up under a spotlight or finder. How do I get the icon back on my launchpad? I don't want to have to search/insert a movie everytine I want to watch one. I would lik to be able to just click the icon to open the player. Thanks.

    cfkola,
    Welcome to the HP Forum.
I believe you must be referring to the Solution Center Printer software and not your Control Panel.
Your Solution Center shortcut may just be missing -- or there may be a deeper issue with your printer software.
The easier option might be to reinstall the Full Feature Software for your printer and see if that solves all the troubles at one time.
In most cases, for most printers, the Solution Center has been replaced with the Printer Assistant shortcut.  This is just a new program that does about the same things as the Solution Center.  Some people like it better.  The interface looks a bit different -- many of the features are the same; for example, your scanning and ink check features will be available.
The instructions to (re)install the printer software are provided in this Dragon document:
Install Full Feature Software - Printer

  • Fresh installation-no DVD player (application)

How can I install the DVDplayer on my iBook even it doesn't have a DVD drive? I have an old iBook which I upgraded a little, so now it's got a really huge HD, where I could copy the DVD's before watching them (this works fine on my Powerbook, and it might just work on the iBook, at least I'd like to try it...). I think that the OS 10.3 installer doesn't install the application by default because there's no built-in DVD-drive, but is there any way to do that manually? Or are there any other applications besides VLC (which I have already, but it is very slow and crashes a lot) that can play DVD's on OS 10.3?
    Thanks for any suggestions

An iBook G3 300 Mhz does not have the graphics card horsepower to run a DVD player built-in, nor is the processor enough for software decoding. It wasn't until the 500 Mhz models that it was fast enough to run software based decoding. Before then, Macs either included a hardware decoder onboard, or you had to use an expansion slot decoder.

  • Deleting DVD Player Application?

    Hi
    I have a PowerMac 6.4 running OS X 10.4.11
The computer doesn't come with a DVD player, maybe it had an external one in the past. Anyhow when it boots now there is an error message about the DVD drive not initializing.
I'm guessing this comes from software, there are 2 DVD programs listed in Applications: DVD Player v4.6.5 and iDVD v6.0.4
Will deleting either application stop the error message popping up? Will it do this without affecting the CD_ROM drive that is fitted?
Is there another reason the initialization error could be generating (error code is -70020 iirc)?
It's not a huge problem but it's nicer to have clean operations.
    many thanks

DVD Player is listed in the Login Items window, but putting a tick in the Hide box doesn't get rid of the error message at startup, just hides it in the Dock
    CDs and DVDs :
insert a blank disc - ask what to do
              music CD - open iTunes
              picture CD - open iPhoto
video DVD - open DVD player
there is no disc in the CDROM drive when I startup.
If I put an audio disc in, iTunes starts - if I put a DVD disc in it just spits it back out.

  • Reinstalling DVD Player Application

The Apple DVD application that I have installed is having some major problems. The DVDs will play but they are extremely pixilated and I get small, horizontal green lines throughout the viewing screen. This happens with every DVD I play.
Other applications that use DVDs play them just fine. Is there a way to reinstall ONLY the DVD player from the OS disk?
    Thank you

As you are still running Panther I am not sure what version you need, but take a look here:
    http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&kword=&type=kbdload&newstype= &q=dvd%20player
Either way, you can download it from that link.

I thought I was deleting shortcuts, but evidently I was mistaken.

Restore from your backup. Don't have any? Then, you need the discs. Replacements available from 1-800-MY-APPLE.

  • How do I get DVD Player back?

My CD player is working but DVDs (movies) are not--photos are. I think the DVD Player application is missing, following an inadvertent deletion. [The aliases are still there.] My question is, can I get the DVD Player application back? I want to upgrade my system software, and I have Tiger (which I believe is the highest my machine would comfortably go with 1.25 Ghz and 767 MB) but it seems I can't do that without the DVD Player application.
    Help Appreciated!
    Ruth

I have a similar problem. Just updated an iMac 700 MHz Flat Panel to 10.3.9. It has no DVD player. After the fact I took and old Super Drive I had from my old iMac Flat Panel 800 MHz machine and installed it in the iMac 700 MHz flat panel. All is well and the drive works, but no Apple DVD Player. I tried installing DVD player 3.1 and it starts but quits immediately. I tried DVD player 4.6 and it requires Tiger or up to install. I need player 4.0 apparently. I tried to use Pacifist on the 10.3.9 updater and the player is not listed as a stand alone item. I ran the updater and no DVD player appeared. I also tried to run the installer from the 10.3 disk set and there is no option to install the player seperately.
Any ideas out there? My iMac 800 MHz flat panel is running Tiger, so it has an incompatible player. I DO NOT want to update this machine to Tiger as it has a small amount of RAM (256 MB) and Tiger likes more memory.

  • DVD player not installed

I am somehow missing my DVD player application. How might I get that or an equivalent DVD player to work on my Mac.
    Thanks!

If you don't mind, could you please explain this process in more detail? My uncle will be performing the operation and I will not be around to help.
    I appreciate it.

  • Disk Image Burn Won't Load DVD Player

Created a disk image in iDVD.
Opened the image and testing its functionality. All is well.
Go into Disk Utility. Select the image and burn.
Resulting disk doesn't not signal DVD Player to launch and play upon mounting.
I can manually open DVD Player and choose open DVD media and the disk plays as expected. What am I missing here.
    Thanks in advance...

Once you have the disk image file on your desktop, click on it once to mount it.
Then open the DVD Player application and the image file should start playing.
The mounted disk image file does not automatically open DVD Player.

  • DVD from iDVD won't play on DVD player

I have made a movie in iMovie with pictures and videos from a vacation. When I was finished in iMovie, I exported the movie to iDVD.
In iDVD I made a menu for my DVD.
I used a Memorex DVD-R disc to burn my DVD on, but I now have a problem. The burned DVD will only play on computers (Macs and Windows), not on regular DVD players. When I try to play the DVD on a regular DVD player, the TV just displays an error message.
    Does somebody know what's wrong?

It sounds like a burn error-rate problem. Unfortunately, iDVD doesn't directly give you the option to burn a disc at a low burn rate to greatly reduce such errors.
What you must do is a two step process:
Step one. 'Burn' a disk image of the completed project to your hard drive - it's an option under FILE. After the disk image is complete, double-click on the disk image icon to mount it on your Desktop and use Apple's DVD Player application to view the image to make sure it plays correctly (File>Open DVD media).
Step two. Use Apple's Disk Utility application or Roxio's Toast Titanium to burn the disk image to writable media. Use a low burn rate - no higher than 4x, but I like to use 2x. See Burning a disk image file on a CD or DVD in Mac OS X at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Also, Memorex may not be the best media choice. Verbatum seems to have a good reputation and I like Maxell.

  • DVD PLAYER in MAC OS X v.10.4.8

Hi, my friend recently burned a dvd for me with a home video on it. I know this is DVD Player and not iDVD but, I couldn't find a forum for that specific program so I thought someone here could help me. The Dvd will play in my playstation 2, but when I try playing it with DVD Player on my MAC it won't? There's no menu's or anything so it should just start playing, but it doesn't. I tried hitting menu, title, and stop and then play again and doesn't get passed the grey screen. Can anyone help me get this to work in DVD player on my MAC?

it's a DVD+R media disc. In Finder I can see the
files on the disc, there's a folder Audio_TS and
VIdeo_TS. There's .VOB, .IFO, .BUP files in the
Video_TS folder and there are no files in the
    Audio_TS folder.
The folders and files sound correct (the Audio_TS folder should be empty).
Try launching Apple's DVD Player application in the Application Folder. It should give you the option to open a DVD (I think that's what the new version of Player says - the old version used to say to open the VIDEO_TS Folder)
