Frame jumping when lots of movement

Hi all-
I shot something with my FX1 in HD only because the camera was set that way when I started recording and I had no time to stop. When I captured the footage to FCE, I wasn't able to import it as 4:3 with black bars on top and bottom (like I wanted). It was either cutting off the edges or stretching people. So, I rendered the entire clip into a self-contained Quicktime Movie that had the proper aspect and such. Then I edited that movie, exported to Quicktime Movie (not self-contained) and burned a DVD with toast.
When there are moments of high-movement in the footage (for example, someone walks by) they seem to skip through the frame without appearing smoothly. It's like there's space between where a person was in one frame and where they are in the next - too much space - it's not natural. It's almost like a flashing. Does anyone know what the heck I'm talking about, why this might have happened, and if there's anything I can do about it??
Thanks so much!!

Hi(Bonjour)!
I understand that you want to capture your HDV shooted material, with downconversion from FX1 to FCE HD (for editing in Standard definition -SD-).
If so, follow those steps:
Set your equipment and software to:
FX1:
Menu settings for VCR:
REC.--><-- HDV/DV : auto
CONV. i.link : ON (HDV-->DV)
OUTPUT TV : 4:3 **very important*
A/V OUT DV : off
FINAL CUT EXPRESS HD 3.5:
Easy setup: DV-NTSC (not anamorphic because your converted material will be 4:3 SD format.
Check your new Sequence properties:
Frame size: 720 X 480 ( ANAMORPHIC must be UNCHECKED!!!)
compressor: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
pixel aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
field dominance: lower (even)
From this point, start a new capture for your SD material.
You'll get a SD (standard definition) movie, with letter box on top and bottom (and by the way, a very good quality DV image).
For your 2nd question: The jerky movement in HDV.
You must understand that HDV is a format based on MPEG2 compression codec.
HDV has limitations when it's time to shoot live rapid action like motor vehicule or sport, you get compression artifacts, but barely noticeable.
That's because MPEG2 HDV is based on "group of images" (GOP) of .5 second. This format has a "full image" at each .5 second and the compression codec generate all "in-between" difference for each frame. So, if you shoot rapid movement, MPEG2 algorythm generate many compression information and your tape recorder system (bitrate of 25 meg/sec specification to use Mini DV tapes) ) fails to keep the pace of a such amount of information, therefore the jerky movement.
You can make some adjustments on FX1 to avoid this problem. Set your shutter speed to 1/60th of second. Do not use cineframe mode (altough I get very good results when viewing a such shooting on TV set). Try to frame "steady".
Use a tripod with a fluid video head.
Good luck.

  • FCP - in/out points of clips move a few frames forward when imported to timeline?

    It's all in the question.
If I have a clip open in the viewer, and I select an in/out point say, ten frames long, when I go to put the clip in the timeline (dragging and dropping), the in/out points move forward about five frames? Because of this, I constantly have to fix the clip segments I move into the timeline.
What could be causing this? The sequence settings match the settings of the clips I'm using (23.98 fps, etc.).

Yes. However, I've used H.264 codec files for many, many other projects without this problem.
If it helps at all, the video is a bit choppier right when it starts to play, and takes a few moments to actually start playing once I click the spacebar.

  • Analyzing then rendering...frames jumping all over the place

After sending clip from FCP to Shake, I set interlacing to <even> and then <analyzed>. Upon rendering, I found the frames jumping all over the place. And not a complete image filling in the viewer.
I watched Capt. Menches' tutorial and couldn't get things to gel.
He also mentioned nothing about <deinterlacing> I am using straight QT file, not HD.
I have just two clips I want to smoothcam effect.
    Thanks

    Thanks.
It was a DV file in FCP then I exported as a Quicktime Self contained movie.
It is now called FCP Movie file with DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
When I open it with Compressor it shows this info as well: NTSC CCIR 601/DV
Also I am under the impression that the de-interlacing should be set to even, Yes?
The clip really isn't so shaky to begin with.
When I play it back in the flipbook. Some frames are on one side of the window then to the other side with some of the frames clipped.
Should I use compressor to make a different codec. I have never used that part of FCP.

  • How do I get more volume when watching a movie and can I use headphones?

How do I get more volume when watching a movie? And can I also use headphones?

Many governments now limit how loud headphones can go. Europe has been plagued with this for many years. Separate amplifiers are available.
I believe volumes should be kept at reasonable levels to avoid hearing loss, but it's not the governments job to protect me.
I prefer Beyerdynamic over Bose Headphones. (They spend a lot less money on advertising.)

  • Bridge CS5 Windows crashes when I command/move or drag/drop files internally

Bridge CS5 crashes with a Microsoft "report error" dialog whenever I drag images from one folder to another inside of Bridge, or use the right-click "Move To . . ." mouse command.  After months of successful use of the Bridge CS5, this behavior suddenly began.  Unfortunately, I can't now remember whether I did anything to my Windows environment at that time.  Bridge does not have trouble with dragging or command/moving files into Photoshop, but dragging image files (jpg) from a search screen or the Windows Explorer can also end in a crash.
I'm running Windows XP SP3 32-bit on a 4-processor machine with adequate ram and lots of hard drive/scratch drive.  I deinstalled every trace of Bridge and reinstalled the upgrade 4.0.2.1, which makes me up to date. Working with Adobe Support I also cleared and uninstalled, and then reinstalled Photoshop, Bridge, etc. to fix some other problems.
I have experimented with purging the Bridge cache for individual folders I was dragging from and to, but didn't purge all caches.  Typically, the crash appears a few seconds after dragging/moving a file - continuosly sucking-me into thinking things are at last repaired.  On occasion images are lost - i.e. really destroyed, or dropped into some limbo somewhere.
I'd be truly grateful for any ideas to try, no matter how extensive or simple.
    Thanks!

    Hi Robert,
I'm a developer from Br team. Thanks for reporting Br. problems.
It seems like a memory issue. Please try this to help us identify the root cause:
    1. Disable all startup scripts (Edit->Preferences->Startup Scripts->Disable All), then restart Br.
    2. When Br is running, kill "SwitchBoard" process in task manager.
    3. When do Copy&Move operations, don't use Drag&Drop, try to use "Move To / Copy To" menu. (A known issue of Bridge, should be fixed in later versions)
    Does the crash still happens?
    Thanks very much!

  • Any way to capture a still frame as an image in Imovie HD? "Create Still Frame" just gives me short MOV files

I'm trying to export a still from a project I'm working on so I can add some things to it in photoshop before importing it back in to the imovie project.
It's from the end of a clip I have. I know I could just use grab and take a screen capture but the quality would be awful.
Imovie HD has this feature, "Create Still Frame" and when I google this problem all the answers tell me to use that.
HOWEVER: When I do use Create Still Frame, instead of giving me a JPG I can use or another image format, it creates a short 5 second .mov clip of the still. If I wanted it in movie format I'd just use the original clip, what I need is an image format!
There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere to change what type of still frame format it uses. There must be a way to do this however, all the answers I've found say it should be JPG and I should be able to locate it then in the project package - what am I doing wrong?

The shortest way to accomplish this is to download a copy of MPEG Streamclip as relayed by longtime iMovie Discussion Group participant AppleMan1958
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15808352#15808352
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.

if you cant download them > email the iTunes Store emaill support adn explian the situation adn they will give you a regrant of all your purchases.
expresslane.apple.com > click on iTunes > then iTunes Store > and choose the right prompts
but you should try the pas purchase thing in iTunes first because the regrant is a one time thing. > IE iTunes Store > purchases > click what you want > redownload
    > but you do need iTunes 10.5 or later for it to work correctly .
i woudl ask for the regrant it you dont have the options for movies yet

Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD)  - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.

  • FCP5 removes last frame from any 23.98fps movie

I'm having an issue with 23.98fps Quicktimes in FCP. When I play the clip in Quicktime, the frame count is correct. When the same movie is opened in the FCP viewer or dropped in a bin, FCP removes the last frame. For example, say I have 2 clips, identical in every way except for frame rate:
    Clip A - 720p Photo-JPEG 120 frames 24fps
    Clip B - 720p Photo-JPEG 120 frames 23.98fps
In QT7, both clips play correctly, contain all frames, and are reported in the info window to be 5 seconds exactly. In FCP Clip A, plays correctly, contains all frames, and has a reported length of 00:00:05:00. Clip B is missing the last frame and has a reported length of 00:00:04:23.
I have done this same test with a 480 frame clip as well with the same results. QT7 reports 20 seconds, FCP reports 00:00:19:23.
I have had this problem with quicktime movies from different sources as well, not just QT movies I have created. It is imperative that I find out what is causing this issue. If anyone can offer any suggestions/answers at all, it would be much appreciated.

    hello anthony.
i can't offer any explanation, but i can offer what might be a work around. i am assuming you need to work at 23.98 and that you are receiving exact frame count files.
if you receive files @ 24fps which are correct, try using cinema tools to "conform" these files to 23.98 ... just open the file from within cinema tools and hit the conform button. i'd be interested to know if these conformed files maintain the correct frame count.
a guess might be that the export or transcode process might be the source of the error.

  • Platform game - disable jump when falling

    Hello everyone,
I'm making a platform game in AS3. I've sorted the left,
right and jumping movement of my character - apart from one jumping
    problem:
When the up arrow key is down it sets the jump var to true.
ENTER_FRAME function detects when jump = true and it decreases the
characters y position by the var velocity while at the same time
decreasing velocity by 1.5px. So my character jumps up to a certain
height then comes down - great! There is a hit test to stop the
    jump/fall.
BUT when the character falls off a platform he can still jump
when the up arrow is pressed. I've been racking my brains but I can
stop the character from jumping if its falling.
    Code aqttached.
Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

on ENTER_FRAME the velocity var is decreasing while the jump
var is true. This is true when the up arrow as been pressed and
isn't false until the character hits the ground. Therefore pressing
the up arrow again while in the air (from a jump) dose not effect
    anything.
You second answer is closer to the solution, I've tried this
approach before, but it badly effects the jump.
This 'else' part of the code controls the character to fall
    if not hitting the ground:
    stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, hitCheck);
    function hitCheck(event:Event):void
    if (ball_mc.hitTestObject(ground_mc))
    jump = false;
    velocity = 35;
    else
    ball_mc.y += 16;
If I cancel the jump function in the else then as soon as the
char starts the jump and is not hitting the ground it will fall
back to the ground. I hope that makes sense?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

  • Preserve frame rate when loading one swf into another

Is there a way to preserve the frame rate of a swf when
loading it into another swf that plays at a higher frame rate. I'm
loading some flash ads that mostly run at around 12-15 frames a
second into a portfolio site that runs at around 40 frames per
second. All my ads play too fast. The link is:
    www.dg8tal.com/portfolioidea.html
    Thanks!

As far as I understand it, there is no option to override the
frame rate designated by the main movie you are loading into. The
SWF file you are loading always inherits the framerate of the SWF
you are loading it into. Here are some suggested work-arounds that
    might help:
    1) Lower the frame rate of the main movie on the website that
    you are loading into.
    2) Expand the timelines of the advertisements just for use in
    your portfolio
    3) Put your menu and thumbnails in one HTML frame that can
then load each item in another HTML frame above it. Since each SWF
would load on its own, the framerate of your main swf would not
matter. You would lose your nice resizing effect though unless you
did some more complicated integration with javascript I imagine.
I would recommend going with option 2, since that will take
the smallest amount of work while preserving your overall design.
However, with the faster framerate, your advertisements would have
difference performance characteristics that you'll need to assess.
I'm trying to think of more options, but these seem to be the
first things that come to mind.

  • How do i set the spalsh image when i export movie?

I am exporting a movie that will be posted on vimeo. when i upload it, the default "splash image" that appears is some random blur. I would like a specific shot from my movie be the "splash image" that appears as the preview for the movie.
How do i set this? i tried putting a single frame in front of the movie and that didnt work. I would def appreciate any insight into this.
    Thank you so much.

It is called a thumbnail image and is set by either youtube or vimeo. in vimeo, go to the video settings and change the thumbnail preview.

Changing frame rate when exporting from iMovie '09 using quicktime has no impact on duration.  Why?
I have a file created by digitizing an 8mm film at a rate of 24 fps. I would like to create a downloaded movie at a frame rate of 15 fps.  The Export using Quicktime option seems to provide that capability but the resulting file has the same duration as the original 24 fps file.  How can I get the exported movie to be slowed down?

    joegez,
There is a feature you can use to slow down the video. In the project, move the mouse pointer over the clip, then click the gear icon. That brings up the Inspector. Click the Clip tab. Then you will see a feature there called Speed. Move the slider to the left to slow down the clip. Or you can enter a percentage in the box on the right.
Hope this solves the problem for you.
