Frame Range of footage used

Hi guys,
I edited 3 Minutes of CGI Animation (PreViz) that is about to be rendered in final quality (the CGIs).
Due to the editing a lot of the "footage" got cut away or overlapped by other footage. For saving rendertime when rendering the CGIs I only want to render the specific areas of the footage that are used in my timeline.
Is there any way to display the range of the footage that got used?
Let´s say:
"Footage 1: Duration of 150 frames. Used in timeline from frame 8 to frame 38"
(0 = frame 0 of the specific footage. Not indicated as "frame number of timeline".
Any way to get that info?
I tried saving and reading the .edl, but there should be an easier way?
Would save me hours of render time.

Hi,
You can turn on Video Usage and Audio Usage in the Metadata Display of the Project Window.
Then go to the clip in the Project Window you want to find on the timeline and click on the small triangle under Video usage option to see the usage of that particular clip.

Multi resolution / frame range / coded onlining

Hi Everyone
So I'm going to online a HD 1080 29.97 documentary. However there are about 10 different video formats, some RED, even some SD! This is my plan, and i want to see if it makes sense to the forum. Time is also an issue.
- Delivery will be a ProRes 422 HQ Quicktime that will be mastered to HDSR for final delivery
- Unfortunately, most of the footage is 23.98, bu the broadcaster demands 29.97
- So I'm just going to lay out a 1080 29.97 ProRes HQ sequence in FCP and export that. i figured the 2332 pulldown from 23.98 to 29.97 should be fine, no need for Compressor or anything?
- Also figured all the different video codecs, HDV, DVCProHD etc being exported as ProResHQ would be okay?
Does this seem ok or am I way off base? I'm used to working with ONE format. What I'm hoping here is the frame range converting upwards and the video converting to ProRes can all be handled at once by FCP. But not if quality suffers

How will this be onlined and color corrected? Mixing frame sizes is decent, but not the best. The best thing to do would be to upscale the SD to HD via hardware, like a Terranex or a good HD Capture card (Kona LHi, Matrox MXO2)...hardware upscaling is always better than software. Or, use Compressor to upscale, and set all the frame controls on BEST. Yes, this will take a while. But, if you only want to do this to the footage in the cut, that will save tons of time.

Bad assumption. FCP doesn't do pulldown properly. It does 2:2:2:4, not 2:3:3:2. No, for this you need to use Compressor.

That is a fine assumption.
But it is always best to convert the footage to one format BEFORE you edit. Now you have to take a long time sorting all of this out, and fixing this cut, before you output and online. And it will be complicated.

Animated Gif - Save for web not showing full frame range

I'm trying to export an animated gif with 52 frames - I'm using the timeline in CS6, it's exported correctly in the past but when I try and save for web only a seemingly arbitrary number of rames appear in the animation. With no clear route to rectify this, I've tried to affect the outcome by simply moving things around on the timeline.
I've had a variety of frame ranges (and frames) numbering between 2 and 6 frames, far off my 52 target. It's a simple image and equally simple transition to keep filesize down but I'm completely bamboozled by this. It looks like a bug but any advice I could get would be much appreciated.

If it worked in the past with CS6 try resetting your CS6 Photoshop Preferences. If you still have the problem after that. Up load the PSD file to a server and post a link to it.

How do I make precise frame range deletions in the middle of project clip?

I need to make a precise deletion of frames 8:55:15 to 8:56:12 in the middle of my project video clip.
Problem: The trimmer won't do it because it keeps the very selection which I want to delete, while deleting the frames before and after my selection range.
Problem: When in my project, while the red pointer tells me exactly where I am in my clip (when I select Playhead Information in View), the problem is that I have no information to tell me the exact location of the right and left selection handles so I can precisely select 8:55:15 and 8:56:12 of my clip for deletion. I press the Option key and the pointer moves to the beginning or end of the clip, not to one end handles of the selection.
In iMovie 3 when the selection handles are moved I get information as to exactly where each handle rests in terms of time or frames for easy deletion of the exact selection I want to remove.
Can iMovie 08 make precise frame range deletions somewhere in the middle of a project clip?

Yes. The basic strategy is to expand the project to its maximum scale (0.5 sec) and to then select the range of frames you wish to to edit. Start by slowly dragging the playhead across the clip in the area you wish to access. The time in white below the window will display the exact (minute:) second: and frame across which you are skimming, as well as display the frame itself in both the thumbnail and the preview screens. (NOTE: I prefer visual selection of the frames rather than using a time reference since such references may change as transitions and titles are added.) When you locate the first frame you wish to delete, press the mouse to select it. While holding down the mouse, continue to scrub the clip to locate the last frame you wish to delete. When you locate it, release the mouse. At this point you can either split the clip and keep/delet the sub-segments as needed or delete the selected range using the "Delete Selection" or "Cut" Edit menu options.
Another method would be to select the approximate range you wish to edit in the middle of the clip and then grab and drag the beginning and ending "handles" to adjust the exact start and stop frames for the "Selected" range. In this case, the times ate the bottom of the "Project" window represent the "in" and "out" points for the range of frames currently selected. Once again, I prefer to select the in and out points visually as I scrub. Also, for me, this two-stage adjustment approach seems quicker and easier for my approach to editing.
The problem is that the playhead refers to the red pointer, thus I can get an exact location of the pointer in terms of time and frame, but NOT a location of the selection handles.
Okay, I see what you mean. However, if you use the two-stange method described above, the point where you press the mouse to mark the begin handle of the selected range is the "begin handle". Same holds true for the release point (playhead time time) for the stop handle.
Is there some way I can line up the pointer exactly with the location of the right or left handle then use Option key and Left/Right arrow keys to move the handles to my exact range frame by frame?
Not really at the same time. iMovie does allow you to set the exact start point and will tell you when you have reached the exact number of seconds and frames for the range you wish to delete. Adding the two together does give you the exact time of the end of the range in seconds and frames.

Creating JPGs or Still Frames from DV footage

I'm sure this is really easy but how do I take a still shot of a single Frame of DV footage and create a JPG or PNG or TIFF - basically to use on a website?
Is there a way to get the Maximum Resolution out of the Still? So that it is as large as possible?

Shift n gives you a still image to edit to a sequence. Then export. As earlier posted....
FILE>EXPORT>QUICKTIME CONVERSION. Click on QT Movie and choose STILL IMAGE. Click on OPTIONS to choose the format.
The best quality image you'll get is 720x480 at 72dpi.

Importing 60i footage using log and transfer, not working :(

Hi, when I import my 60 fps footage in to Final Cut Express using the log and transfer method (because the footage is AVCHD) it always changes the frame rate to 29.97 even if the frame rate is lower like 24 fps. I need this to be 60 frames per second because I'm working with a slow motion shot and need to get the most frames from the footage.

We had done all of those little tricks to no avail... but we did figure it out.
It turns out it was a corrupted sequence that was causing the problems.
Trashed the sequence, now everything's happy again.

Hi Melissa - thanks for your interest. Here's the first frame, the second frame and the tween frame. I don't understand why the tween is changing the position of the object in frame 2, was expecting it to just fade from one frame to the next.

I'm sorry, I think I've misled you. I suggested that you perform two queries and then take the intersection of the results. You could do this, but the solution to your query is much simpler. I'll correct my previous message.
Your query is very simple to implement. You should perform the first part of query to get a cursor on the index for 'a' for the "1<=t.a<=2" part. Then simply iterate over that cursor, and process the entities where the "3<=t.b<=5" expression is true. You don't need a second index (on 'b') or another cursor.
This is called "filtering" because you're iterating through entities that you obtain from one index, and selecting some entities for processing and discarding others. The white paper you mentioned has an example of filtering in combination with the use of an index.
An alternative is to reverse the procedure above: use the index for 'b' to get a cursor for the "3<=t.b<=5" part of the query, then iterate and filter the results based on the "1<=t.a<=2" expression.
If you're concerned about efficiency, you can choose the index (i.e., choose which of these two alternatives to implement) based on which part of the query you believe will return the smallest number of results. The less entities read, the faster the query.
Contrary to what I said earlier, taking the intersection of two queries that are ANDed doesn't make sense -- filtering is the better solution. However, taking the union of two queries does make sense, when the queries are ORed. Sorry for the confusion.

You could if you want a postcard sized print.
Printers need a lot more "dots" per inch and even a 1920X1080 video doesn't have enough "dots" to make more than a postcard.

Rendering Frame Range

I was rendering out a movie that crashed at the 40 minute mark.
The part of the movie that rendered so far still plays back fine in a media player.. and since it took four hours, I don't want to have to re-render the frames that are already rendered... it is fine if I need to start a new video file.
Question: how do I start a render in the middle of a movie composition (frame range)?
I can't find the information online or in help.

HI, i just installed the update, i was really looking forward to the bug fix to detect bad frames in HDV footage, this was the update to cs3 and cs4 had it to begin with -
Improved handling of MPEG streams
The Premiere Pro 3.2.0 update provides improved handling of MPEG files. Errors in the MPEG stream can occur during recording due to tape dropouts, record start/stop glitches, timecode breaks, and a variety of other causes. Bad frames caused by these MPEG stream errors are now better identified in 3.2.0 during file indexing and playback. Because older MPEG index files and conformed audio files (those existing before the 3.2.0 update) do not take advantage of the improved MPEG handling, these files should be deleted to avoid compatibility issues.

Das Programm soll alle AVCHD Daten von Camcordern direkt lesen könne und auch bearbeiten können.
Dateiendung: MTS.
Erkannt als AVC/ H.264 Datei.
Diese kann CS5 nicht sauber abspielen.!
Egal ob SSD Festplatte oder SATA II- Schnellste von WD- er spielt diese MTS Daten nur
mit starken Artefakten ab.
Der Störende Ablauf wirkt Pulsierend Rythmisch, so als wüdern die Farben
in dem Video abblättern wollen und verschieben sich dabei. Erklären kann man das nicht man muss es sehen.
Wenn die Datei gerändert wird geht es wohl besser aber auch nur dann, wenn diese Datei in der Timeline Gelb oder Rot ist.
Ansonsten kann man diese datei nicht rendern.
Dann muss man die Datei über CS5 exportieren.
Ich habe das MXO2mini Matrox und muss dann ein solches Format wählen.
Der mediaplayer von Win7 kann meine MTS Datei sauberst abspielen. Kristallklar.
Die umgewandelte Datei von CS5 kann dann CS5 abspielen.
Der Mediaplayer spielt die Datei dann nur totakl Verzittert wieder, da ist keine Freude am Videoschnitt zu erleben.
Hat jemand eine Idee was das für eine Ursache hier vorliegt?
Ist das problem der artefackte schon bekannt? Ich kann leider kein englisch und ich komme auch nicht in ein deutsches Adobe forum sondern lande immer nur hier.

Widescreen footage using the windows media encoder of Matrox 100

I use PPRO 2.0 with the matrox 100 card. I will encode a footage, shoot in widescreen. Normally when I have a 4:3 picture I use the Matrox mediaencoding for WMP and this works fine. But the matrox mediaencoder settings doesn't have a widescreen setting.
Using the PPRO encoder in widescreen setting, the picture is distorted, maybe because of the many time dicussed Matrox system.
Can anyone give me suggestions to encode a matrox build footage into a mediaencoded footage using the matrox media encoder or otherwise?

Thanks for replying.
The solution I finally use is to export the AVI in windows media encoder and encode it to WMV format. This works but is as bit more time consuming than directly use the Matrox encoder in PPRO as I use for 4:3 footages (which have no widescreen option).

Selecting particular range of style using script

HI All,
Can anyone suggest me that how we can select the range of text using script.
I am having some different para styles say for eg., PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4...........
I may applyed these styles in some jumping order but except PS1, now I want to select paragraphs with applied style PS1 to stop before the next appearence of PS1 style.
Like: In a document Para 1, 10, 14, 25 were applied with PS1, so the selection should go in the way like 1-9, 10-13, 14-24 and so on

"The" index of a paragraph is nothing special, it's the index of the first character of that paragraph inside its parent story. In particular, it does NOT tell you "this is the 5th paragraph" or something like that.
This is because "Paragraph" is an artificial construct inside "Text", not a truly existing first class object. Same as "Line", "Word", "Character", and indeed, any text selection at all.
Since you already have a "found text" array, "the index" of the nth entry's paragraph -- with the constraint described above -- can be simply found by using foundText[n].paragraphs[0].index (the index of the first character of your foundText is foundText[n].index).
If you DO need to know the nth number of the paragraph, search this forum. I think Peter Kahrel answered to a post to answer that exact question.

Capturing Old Hi8 footage using Sony TRV310 DIgital 8 Camera Using Firewire

I have read many of the previous posts regarding capture of old Hi8 footage. I recently purchased a MacPro and am in the process of converting my video and photography work over to it from a PC. I have both a MiniDV and the above mention Digital8. There is no problem capturing new footage shot with the Digital8 since it is recorded in digital format. However, I have years of old Hi8 tape. I get the "VTR OK" message, and can use the on screen control to advance and view the tapes. However, when I try to capture them into FCP 6.0, I get a message that it is waiting for a time code. Is there a setting that I need to change to get around this?

I used the "uncontrollable device" setting with "Capture Now". This allowed me to used the camcorder's on board controls to advance the video for capture. When you use the "uncontrollable device setting, you no longer get the "VTR OK" status message. You get a "No communications" status message.
The capture of the hour long Hi8 tape went fine with no dropped frames that I can tell. However, at the end of the capture, I got a message that the "Audio Sample rate for the file was different than the Audio sample rate of the source tape. And, that the audio and video might be out of sync". Sure enough, the audio is slightly out of sync with the video. I'll have to look back in my old camera manuals to see if I can find what the audio sample rate for Hi8 is and make that adjustment.
