Frame Rate Conform - Help!

I'm quite new to Final Cut Pro X.
I have a movie clip that with a duration of 01:39:31. According to Quicktime, the frame rate is 25.
When I import the clip to Final Cut, the software recognises the frame rate as 25, but it automatically activates the "Rate Conform", saying "25 converted to 23.98". I can't uncheck this option as it's greyed out. However, when I imported the clip, I set the frame rate to 25, and when I open the project properties, the frame rate is set to 25 too.
Now the whole clip is 01:43:44 and I can't work with it.
Any ideas?
Is this a bug or a "feature"?

Double check your project setting or create a new one if neccessary. I re-created your issue by importing a 25fps clip into a 23.98fps project. Once it's in the project it can't be changed, hence it's greyed out.

  • How to offset speed change in frame rate conforming?

Hi all. I am conforming video from about 25fps to 30 fps in cinema tools, before editing in FCP. Does any one know of a formula, or calculator tool that would tell me the speed change percentage to use, to get the clip to play in normal speed while editing? Is there a setting to do this automatically in FCP?

And you needn't speed change the footage at all. Simply cutting 25fps footage into a 30fps timeline will do. If you really desire a formula, to convert 25 fps to 30, you need to run it slower (less frames) so the speed is 25/30 or 5/6ths or 83% - to do it the other way, 30/25 = 6/5ths or 120%.
But, like I said, if you cut PAL footage into an NTSC timeline, it will adjust the speed appropriately - sizing too...

  • Frame rate conversion HELP

Is it true there is no way to SUCCESSFULLY apply pulldown to 24pNative footage (shot with the HVX-200 on P2 cards) OTHER than laying it to tape? I'm told it's the video card that's doing the pulldown and there's no way pulldown can be done within FCP/Cinema Tools/Compressor. What I'm trying to do is convert my DVCPRO 50 23.98 quicktimes to DVCPRO 50 29.97
I just can't come to terms with the idea that the only way I can work in a 29.97 timeline is by dumping all my 24pNative footage to tape and re-digitizing. Of course you can drop a 24pNative clip into a 29.97 timeline and render it and FCP will "pull it down" so to speak by adding duplicate frames but of course it isn't correct, nor does it look correct.

    Hey Shane,
Thanks for all the help so far, very much appreciated.
THE WHOLE STORY with a happy happy ending
    - shot a music vid with the HVX-200 and the mini-35 adaptor (with SLR lenses) in DVCPRO HD 720pN mode. Planned to deliver the video in standard def.
    - Chose HD 720pN recording because a) wanted to be able to have the option to deliver an HD version if ever desired b) wanted to be able to use the HVX's undercranking and overcranking abilities only available in 720p mode (which look amazing and can be played back on set real time, I'm still to this day impressed by that), 3x the recording time on a P2 card at 720p 24pN versus recording DVCPRO 50 24p, and finally wanted my VFX/compositor guy to be able to work with highest res images possible (i.e. do his work with the HD dailies and deliver me HD and SD versions of the completed VFX shots ). And yep, in order to deliver an HD version of the video I would have to do a match back edit with my HD dailies and HD VFX shots but that really doesn't take too long for a 180 second show.
    - Chose to work in and deliver SD because it's all my offline rig is capable of outputting (i.e. no HD client monitor, just my NTSC CRT). I know some people who cut their music vids (shot in DVCPRO HD 24p 720p/1080i who are still going to deliver standard def as it's still the requirement up here in Canada with our MTV equivalent station Much Music) without ever actually seeing what their show looks like on a client monitor (i.e. an NTSC or HD televsion) until they take their locked picture to the online suite and only then do they get to see it on a TV...in a room that costs $500-$1000 an hour (i.e. they do this cuz like me, they don't have a high end video card or HD televsion). I just don't think it's wise to not see what your video actually looks like on an NTSC monitor (for all the obvious and not so obvious reasons I'm too lazy to list and you already know), hence why I downconvert my HD dailies at the offline stage (instead of downconverting my locked/color corrected HD timeline at the online stage) so I can actually see what my video looks like on an NTSC monitor (i.e. the medium it will broadcasted in) as I edit it.
    - Because I shot some DV footage with the HVX-200 (emergency shooting only remember) I know needed to work with DVCPRO 50 23.98 and DV 30p in my FCP project. After coming to the conclusion I had no way of getting my DVCPRO 50 23.98 (downconverted from my DVCPRO HD 24pN remember) into a 29.97 timline, unless I laid it to tape (popular belief at the time), I unfortunately chose to upconvert my DV 30p to DVCPRO 50 30p and then reverse telecine it (pulling out frames from orignal 30fps source material, i.e. resulting in a slightly choppy look when played back) in order to work entirely in a DVCPRO 50 23.98 timeline. Another editor agreed that unless I wanted to lay my 23.98 footage to tape (the HD quicktimes or the SD downcoverted quicktimes) I should just make my 30p material 23.98 by reverse telecining in either cinema tools or a program he suggested called DVFilm Maker. I checked out DVFilm Maker, looked pretty mickey mouse to be honest and just reverse telecined in cinema tools.
    - So, Mr. Shane, after I read your post that you were looking into what compressor can do, I thought it'd be worth a double check if DVFilm Maker could turn 23.98 to 29.97 and LOOOONG BEHOLD (wipe my eyes) it has a catagory called "Post-Edit Processing" that offers the feature "Convert 24P/23.976P to 3:2 NTSC". I quickly double checked my HVX-200 manual and sure enough, 24pNative mode records the "active a.k.a. effective" frames in the 3:2 pulldown process giving you true 24fps, so surely it could be REVERSE-reverse-telecined (also referred to as "pulldown" I guess). And it bloody well can. No recompression, no visible damage what so ever, just adds 3:2 pulldown and creates a duplicate 29.97 quicktime.
All my footage (whether it was HD 23.98 or DV 30p) is now DVCPRO 50 29.97 and can be edited without loss of quality (other than it being SD which was intended for now).
And it just occured to me, if you wanna save hardrive/P2 card space while in the field, why not shoot 24pN and then pull it down in post? (that was probably a loaded question that will generate a lot of responses entitled "Actually, you idiot..." but whatev. I'm so relieved at the moment that NO sacrifices have to be made. But I'll be damned if I didn't need 5x times the hard drive space than I should of for this little music video (i.e. all the original dailies in their original codecs HD/SD, and the duplicate sets of upconverted/downconverted dailies).
    Goooodnight.

  • Frame rate effect help

    Hello all!
I have a video clip, 3 minutes in length, at 30fps. I want it to look like it was done on a bad quality web-cam at maybe 5fps. Is there a way I can convert my 30fps clip to 5fps so it looks bad. I want only a few frames per second but I don't know how to go about doing this.
I think this may be a strange request, but hopefully it's possible.
    Thanks!

On the subject of "Posterize Time", when I use it, it seems that Premiere applies its crappy deinterlacing whether I want it to or not -- even with progressive footage in progressive frame projects. Has anyone else noticed this?

  • Want to change frame rate, help, please !!

    hi all,
i want to know whether, jmf does provide any support for changing the frame rate ? is there any ways by which one can change the framerate, of a live captured video ?
i came across one class "FrameRateControl" in jmf, tried it, but wasn't successful in changing the frame rate. plz help me guys.
if u have came across, when doing live capturing using jmstudio, we can change the frame rate. can we do that in our programs tooo.
please someone, wew64, watergad.......... help me out..........,
    thanks for ur help.
    niraj.

the code is here and it is working on windows, but the framerate could not be changed on linux. it keeps saying rcFormat is null on linux. Then I try to change the framerate with JMStudio, it doest not make any difference as well, it seems keep playing the video with preferred frame rate as well. Any ideas?

  • Help with sequence settings in final cut for project with 2 different frame rates.

I really need help with this one! I finished editing a wedding video and realized after exporting that it was filmed in two different frame rates. This has happened before but I converted the footage to match and fixed the problem. In this case, the footage is part 30fps and part 60fps. The majority of it was filmed in 30fps. I cannot convert the 60 to 30 without the slow motion effect which I do not need so I have to find a way to burn this to a DVD without it looking messed up! The video was shot with two Canon 7ds if that helps anything. The first sequence I set at 29.97 and exported as a quicktime movie and all the footage filmed in 60 looked perfect and the footage in 30 looked jittery. Then I tried the sequence at 59.97 and it switched. The footage filmed at 30 looked good and the 60 was cropped in. I am so confused! Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for your help Michael! The frame rates are 29.97 1920 x 1080 and 59.94 1280 x 720. I did a control click on the clips in final cut and viewed the item properties/format to find this info. The Canon 7d is a DSLR but we use it for video. As for my workflow, the first thing I do is import the footage onto my computer and then drag the clips into mpeg streamclip. I choose apple prores 422 and uncheck the interlaced box. Once this is done I import the .mov files into final cut. The sequence automatically sets itself to whatever clip I drag in first so it originally set as 29.97. When I finished editing wedding video, I export it to a quicktime movie and choose whatever settings match the sequence, in this case apple prores 422 1920 x 1080 30p. Once that is done I use iDVD to burn the discs.
I knew something was wrong when I watched the quicktime movie and all the 30fps footage was jittery and most of the cross dissolves looked strange. That's when I figured out the footage was at two different frame rates. What I don't understand is why whatever the sequence is set at in final cut, the clips of the opposite frame rate look right but the clips set at the matching frame rate don't???

  • Are different frame rate clips automatically conformed to that of the project?

I have a 25p project and have dropped in some clips shot at 30p.
I thought I would have to conform those clips to play at 25p but they appear to be doing that already and to my surprise there is no orange render line above them.
Is this correct and if so, would any other frame rates (50p or 60p etc.) be conformed to 25fps with no rendering required?

YYes, clips conform to the project frame rate.

  • Okay so i had an iphone 5.  I backed it up on icloud. Then i got the new iphone 5s i restored ot from icloud from my previous iphone 5.  Now everything works find execept now the games are slowy and drops the frame rate and look choppy. Please help.

Okay so i had an iphone 5.  I backed it up on icloud. Then i got the new iphone 5s i restored ot from icloud from my previous iphone 5.  Now everything works find execept now the games are slowy and drops the frame rate and look choppy. Then i restarted my iphone 5s as a new device downloaded the same apps even the ones optimized for ios 7 and the games still lag. And i just got my iphone 5s replace.  The funny thing is.  While im playing games and their running choppy and slow and if i take a snap shot inside the phone. They run smooth and HD but just for a few seconds and boom they go back to slow and choppy.  Is it the ios 7 or the iphone 5s it self? Like i said this is my replacement iphone 5s because the other 5s did the same thing. And it was running slowly.

As far as I know you can't delete the primary email address for an iCloud account.  It's assigned when the account is created.  But your neighbor wouldn't have been able to get into your iCloud account without your Apple ID and password.  Are you sure the account wasn't still on your phone when you gave it to him?
You could migrate a copy of your data to a new iCloud account but I would still be concerned that someone else was using my old account, which presumably still has your data in it.
I'm fairly certain that you're going to have to have iCloud support help you sort this one out as they may have the ability to make changes to an existing account that users can't.  Make an appointment with the genius bar at a nearby Apple store and have them take a look at it.  If necessary, they should be able to contact iCloud support for you.

  • Help with TIFF image sequence frame rate?

I'm working on an animation sequence, its a 24p project.  Whenever I import an image sequence, Premiere automatically interprets this at 29.97 (though, per the help files, it should automatically interpret at the project frame rate, but it's not).  In the project panel, I use interpret footage so that it interprets at 24p.  However, when I bring this image sequence into the timeline it shows at the right duration, but the end of the sequence is cut off (essentially, premiere is still reading in at 30p, but gives it the duration of 24p).
CS4 is the first version I've had this problem with.. usually, I just bring in the image sequence and it's fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Hi, I have the same problem as my workflow is to import R3D into AE CC and render it into Tiff sequence. At first I had changed every setting to 24, and it rendered out choppy and clipped off a few frames in the end.
    Now I have tried this
Once you import Tiff, right click> Interpret Footage > Main
Then you will see black box. In this column box, there is Frame Rate column, then tick Assume this frame rate: 24 frames per second.
You have to type in 24 yourself, then it works out fine.
My guess is that Tiff is sequence image, and it DOES NOT have frame rate. So you have to tell AE to assume the imported image sequence's frame rate. Otherwise it always assumes 30 by default.
    Hope it works.

  • Could anyone help me out here regarding frame rate?

Hi, everyone,I need help with a dynamic frame rate issue,
I have created this spinning diamond flash with a dynamic frame rate controlled by the mouse cursor.
it spins from the right to the left if the cursor is at the left side of the diamond and vice verse, and also the further away the cursor is from the middle of the diamond, the faster it spins.
it works perfectly awesome in Firefox and by itself, but when it's in IE, the cursor loses control of frame rate, so it spins at the highest frame rate regardless where the cursor is at.
I used nextFrame(), prevFrame() to do the winding and rewinding job, and frame rate gets changed in ENTER_FRAME.
I've heard some say that IE ignores frame rate per frame? is it true? if so, how do I fix it?
Could anyone please help me out with this issue?it only happens in IE.

please don't cross-post.  let's keep this discussion on the general flash forum.

  • Poor Result using Panasonic Frame Rate Converter.  Please Help!

    Hey All,
Myself and a crew of other university filmmakers shot some footage at 720P and 60 FPS on the Panasonic HVX-100 with the hopes of converting it to 24fps for smooth slow motion. We are using FCP 5.1.2 and the panasonic DVCPROHD Frame Rate Converter Tool. I am almost certain I am using the correct workflow for this, but the result yields footage that seems to be at the right speed, but is very jumpy, as if its only playing every 4th frame or so. I tried exporting the footage off the timeline as well to check and make sure it wasnt a playback problem, and it wasnt. It appears as if the converter is working incorrectly. This slow motion is vital for our project and I'm at my wits end trying to figure it out. Any help?

Ok. I tried converting making sure that i didnt remove any frames on the import from the raw P2, as well as for the export. i tried all the combos of this. I still get the jumpy slow motion because of repeatyed frames. I did notice a combo in these repeated frames, it will play 3 of one frame, then 2 of another. could this be a pulldown problem somewhere?
could you guys outline the settings you use to import (capture and editing timebases) as well as to edit on, and to process slow motin. I just want to make sure im not missing anything.
The help is SO awesome. thanks for trying to work through this with me.

  • Frame Rate help

I have a project that requires me to intercut video footage of a presentation with a Keynote deck. The video of the presentation was shot with a single camera (not by me) at 1920x1080 at 23.98 FPS. You can't see the Keynote slides on the projection screen behind the speaker, hence the need to intercut slides into the video.
I want to use FCP's multiclip to edit the Keynote slides (exported as a mov) and presentation video together.
I have the original Keynote file, but I can't seem to make the Keynote app export at 23.98 FPS. If I export it at 24 FPS, and try to make a multiclip, FCP throws an error about frame rates not matching (because the video footage is 23.98 FPS).
So, if I can't get Keynote to play nice, do I need to convert the presentation footage from 23.98 FPS to 24 FPS? If so, what's the best way to do it?
    Thanks!

although cinema tools may seem daunting, using the conform option is very simple.  First, I would duplicate your file (for safety sake as cinematools actually changes the frame rate of the original file).  Then open your file in cinematools.   File:  open clip.  A window opens and at the bottom about two-thirds to the right is a button "conform."  Click that and a window opens called Conform Clip.  Simply choose the desired frame rate and click the conform button.    That's it.    CinemaTools is (if I understand correctly) simply changing the metadata for the file so instead of playing back at your original frame rate, it plays back at the new frame rate.  If you conform from 24fps to 23.98 you will actually be slowing down your clip slightly.  But each frame is still a discrete frame and no interpolation, creation or deleting of frames happens.

  • Need Help Determining Least Common Demoninator for Frame Rate, Codec, and Workflow

I need help determining the best timeline setting and Compressor workflow to integrate footage with varying frame rates and codecs that I'm currently upres'ing for a multi-camera concert performance destined for HD broadcast output. I'm assuming the network needs 29.97.
Thus far, I've been working with Apple ProRes Proxy files to create lo-res edits. Now, I've started the task of offlining and ingesting new, HD clips from the proxy references. The content originates from either Panasonic HVX200 or Panasonic GH1 cameras.
Looking at the material, it appears the cameras were not shooting with the same settings and, somehow, a PAL GH1 got into the mix. Some of the performances have the PAL GH1 and other do not.
Here's the breakdown of the varying sources. I got this info from the Log & Transfer columns.
    HVX Cameras
    Format: 1080p24
    Source Format: DVCPRO HD 1080i60
    Shooting Rate: 24
    Vid Rate: 29.97
    TC Format: Non-Drop
    GH1 NTSC
    Format: 1080i60
    Source Format: AVCHD 1080i60
    Shooting Rate: 30
    Video Rate: 29.97
    TC Format: Drop
    GH1 PAL
    Format: 1080i50
    Source Format: AVCHD 1080i50
    Shooting Rate: 25
    Video Rate: 25
    TC Format: Non-Drop
    ANOTHER GH1 NTSC
    Format: 1080p24
    Source Format: AVCHD 1080p24
    Shooting Rate: 24
    Video Rate: 23.98
    TC Format: Non-Drop

Call the TV station/network and get their spec sheet first. You need to know more than frame rate.
Once you have that, you can work backwards to arrive at a workflow.
As a general priniciple, you'll get a more seamless translation of format when you add frames rather than removing them. (eg 24p to 27.97 rather than 29.97 to 24p)
At least all the material starts out in the 1080 world.
Do all your conversions before you start editing. (I'd use ProRes or ProRes LT for the editing codec).
Budget a bunch of time to sync the material or figure out a quick cutting style that minimizes sync drift.
    What a nightmare.

  • Why lose mbps when conform to lower frame rate?

When I export a QT pro res HQ movie out of MOTION 4, with the same settings as the sequence (Pro res HQ 422, 59,96 fps 1280x720p), it renders out a good, same 221mbps file, but when I then take that file into Cinema Tools and conform it to 23.98fps, the file is now 88mbps? Why and how, and did losing 140mbps somehow lose also color correction and other quality capabilities?
Why does CT lose many mbps when conforming to lower frame rate?
    Thanks
    K

Thanks fo replies - I shot in 60 fps 720p to purposely slomo the shots in MOTION using Optical flow - then I conform to 23.98 using Cinema Tools, though I guess I could do the same by exporting to 23.98 out of MOTION 4. Wonder if there is any advantage or otherwise using CT over MOTION export to 23.98?
Nick is right, I can see a decline in visual quality/sharpness in the footage now conformed at 23.98. Should I export out of MOTION at PR HQ or 4444 or uncompressed? Hoping to preserve what I think is 10-bit footage recorded on ATOMOS NINJA at PR HQ422, which is 10 bit correct? But when I choose PR HQ 422 in MOTION export, it says (at the bottom summary of my codec) that it's HQ at 8-bit? Why and how to preserve 10-bit for color grading?

  • P2/Clip Help- Frame Rate issue

    Hi,
I'm editing a sequence of footage shot on a P2 cam- set at the DVCPRO 720p preset and every once in a while, I drop a clip in that plays fine in the viewer but plays as though it has a weird frame rate when dropped into my sequence. The same part of the clip can be dropped somewhere else and will play fine in the sequence- ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated.
