Frame rate fluctuations

I know sounds weird... I have a simple movie that is set at
48fps that when run from a staging server runs noticeably faster
than when running locally. Note, same client and browser, the only
apparent difference is where it is being served from.
Is there way to control playback frame rate outside of the
SWF file, like in Javascript?
thanks,
jr

Thanks for the reply... I don't mean to be disrespectful but
the issue is not the 48fps (although that is a frame rate I have
never used before).... It does it at 30, 24, 12... I probably
should have mentioned that as well.
I believe the key symptom is that the same client/browser was
running the movie at different rates depending on where the movie
was being served from. This led me to think that somehow the
movie's frame rate was being controlled externally such as through
a Javascript call. However, in my limited experience I have not
seen any evidence of being able to do this.
Is there or should I just attribute this to a ghost in the
machine?
thanks,
jr

  • Frame skip/choppy frame rate problems

    Hi all,
I have been benchmarking different sprite rendering methods on iPhone, and seem to have a consistently choppy framerate when publishing using CPU.  If I use GPU the frame rate is not choppy, but the overall performance is much slower.
    I have a detailed analysis here: http://www.pixelthismobile.com/blog/1/10/2010/flash-iphone-wildly-fluctuating-framerate-or -frame-skip
All I am doing is drawing a number of sprites to a static bitmap on the stage (using copyPixels), clearing the bitmap before each frame.
Basically the framerate jumps rapidly between two values (a low and a high - for example 15 fps and 52 fps) at a very consistent rate of about 3 cycles per second.  I am at a loss...
Would be great if anybody had any insights.
    Regards,
    Peter
p.s. This uses PFI v1, have yet to try with v2.

I'm starting to get to the bottom of this! Seems the choppy performance is being caused by my benchmarking routine, which pushes a single Number value on to an array every frame.   I assumed this was due to memory allocation so I tried a fixed size array and simply setting a value each frame. Still choppy.  So I got rid of the benchmark code altogether. All that is left is this code: frameCount++; And the choppy frame problem is STILL there! Without the ++ it is fine o.O - how absolutely bizarre. Who would have thought a post increment would cause a choppy frame rate!?  Still doing more testing so stay tuned...
Nope - it is frame skip

  • Exporting Frame Rates Accurately

    Hey all,
Long time Adobe product user here, I just joined CC last week and I'm really enjoying the workflow. I'm having a very strange issue with AME that I hope someone here can help me with.
I export low resolution previews (usually 480x270) for clients almost daily and I have been doing so smoothly with a custom preset I created in AME. It was working fine for some 30 second previews I sent out earlier in the week (all from AE) but today I'm exporting a 4:15 timeline from Premiere and the Quicktime results are really weird. My timeline is  The quality looks fine but the framerate I set to 29.97 is coming out as 29.08 and Quicktime Player 7 doesn't play it back smoothly. Playback stutters and jumps while I watch the Playing FPS in the Movie Inspector window fluctuate wildly between 70 and 200 frames per second. The file plays fine in VLC, MPEG Streamclip and even the Finder previews it smoothly. Quicktime X also has no problem with the file. However, when I upload the file to our FTP for online client viewing, it once again plays back with stutters and jumps. There is also a big lag before streaming starts that I don't usually see.
This frame rate accuracy (inaccuracy?) is kind of a big deal here since we deliver to broadcast systems that require precision in this area. We've been forced to continue encoding for some clients in the ancient Cleaner 6.5 because the files we generate from AME don't playback, even with the exact same specs. I suspect this 29.08 fps is to blame. Can anyone help me figure out why I can't encode these previews at 29.97 fps? Does anyone have any other suggestions as to why this file won't play properly?
As a side note, why isn't WMV encoding in AME included on OSX?
Thanks everyone, here are my specs:
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 3.2 GHz
    Number of Processors: 2
    Total Number of Cores: 8
    Memory: 24 GB
    Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770
    Blackmagic Design Multibridge Eclipse
All current CC updates (as of this post date)

By render do you mean export a version and reimport it? That's a great idea. I'll try that.
Is there any way of "baking" a file so to speak without actually rendering it out? I hate going through too many generations. I shot on the RED to get excellent quality and I would prefer to go from the original R3Ds right to my output... But if it's not possible, I accept it!
    Thanks so much,
    Adrian

  • Creating a Gif is different frame rate

If I have an uncompressed .AVI file that I created in After Effects CS5.5 which is 23.976 fps, and load it in Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5, and tell it to create a .GIF of it, at an output fps of 23.976, when I load the created .GIF into Adobe After Effects it tells me the frame rate is 25 fps and there is a black frame padded on the end.  I want the frame rate of the GIF to be what I ask it to be, ie. 23.976, with no additional black frames.
    Here's what happened with screenshots:
    1. I load the uncompressed AVI file that was created in Adobe After Effects CS5.5 into Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5.  Note below that Adobe Media Encoder is saying that the source clip is 23.976 fps, and that the export settings are to create an animated GIF at 23.976 fps.
    2. After Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5 has said "done" (Encoding Completed Succesfully) for this export to a .GIF, if I take that .GIF file that Adobe Media Encoder has just created into Adobe After Effects CS5.5, this is what it says:
As can be seen above, Adobe After Effects CS5.5 is saying the GIF file that Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5 has just encoded is actually 25 fps, not 23.976 fps like I told it to be exported as.  Also, the GIF Adobe Media Encoder has created is 10 frames long, whereas my original uncompressed AVI is 9 frames long.
Edit: I've just been reading up on the GIF format and it seems it doesn't store a frame rate but instead stores a frame delay, which is in hundredths of a second.  If this is just an integer, is this the reason for the displayed frame rate discrepancy, ie. 1 frame at 23.976 fps  would be 4.1708 hundredths of a second I think, and 1 frame at 25 fps would be 4 hundredths of a second I think - both rounded to the nearest integer would be 4 hundredths of a second so would the frame delay be set to "4" for both 23.976 fps and 25 fps? (there is also the fact that some short time will be taken for the drawing of the frame)
Though even with the above, it shouldn't be increasing the amount of output frames.  It converts it correctly (no additional frames) if I use VirtualDub to convert the AVI to GIF instead of Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5.

Thanks.  Could you get them to also check other parts of the code too.  eg. when I had a work area set in Adobe After Effects CS5.5 and then loaded that project into Adobe Media Encoder (dynamic link etc.) and rendered just the work area I think it was about a frame out then too - I don't think it was a GIF in that case but another type (maybe AVI/H264).

  • How can I change to a higher frame rate than 12 FPS?

Just got a good deal on a 15 in MACBOOK Pro running Yosemite with the latest Quicktime and iMovie. Is the best frame rate I can get out of this HD camera 12fps? I can't find anywhere to change it in QT or in IMovie.

So you seem to correctly understand the information in the linked Use More Light! article.
studiojl wrote:... I don't like that at all...
Your emotion is irrelevant.  It simply works the way Apple software is written.  Perhaps some other computer system works different from Mac OS X and Apple camera apps?
If you intend to keep using Mac, you can take manual control of some camera parameters by using a third party add-on app such as iGlasses, Webcam Settings, or Sight Control.
studiojl wrote: ... what frame rate does it pick if I import one 30 FPS clip and one 60 FPS clip?
Whatever frame rate is set by the program of the software application you are using to record those clips.
You can determine that frame rate by making short test videos and watching it in QT Player.
The QT "Inspector" window will show you the frame rate for the clip.
Here's an example for a clip made in my low-light room:

  • Msi GeForce 4 4200 frame rate locked at 60 with Windows 2000

Lost here..... I have an MSI Geforce 4 4200 120MB Video Card slotted on an Asus A7V motherboard - AMD Thunderbird 1Ghz processor with 640mb of ram.
There is a common problem with the Nvidia chip and Windows 2000 in regards to a lock frame rate at 60fps within games.
I've tried several programs to fix this i.e. "Refresh Lock", "Windows 2000/XP Nvidia Refresh rate lock", "PowerStrip 3.15" and "NVFresh Tool 1.0"
But nothing seems to work. I'm sure these program work with older Nvidia cards but not with GeForce 4.
Any Ideas? I even turned the Vsync off and on.

I give XP 2 more years before it's the OS for all. I've reinstalled 6 systems with Windows 2000 because of compatibility problems.)

  • Help with sequence settings in final cut for project with 2 different frame rates.

I really need help with this one! I finished editing a wedding video and realized after exporting that it was filmed in two different frame rates. This has happened before but I converted the footage to match and fixed the problem. In this case, the footage is part 30fps and part 60fps. The majority of it was filmed in 30fps. I cannot convert the 60 to 30 without the slow motion effect which I do not need so I have to find a way to burn this to a DVD without it looking messed up! The video was shot with two Canon 7ds if that helps anything. The first sequence I set at 29.97 and exported as a quicktime movie and all the footage filmed in 60 looked perfect and the footage in 30 looked jittery. Then I tried the sequence at 59.97 and it switched. The footage filmed at 30 looked good and the 60 was cropped in. I am so confused! Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks for your help Michael! The frame rates are 29.97 1920 x 1080 and 59.94 1280 x 720. I did a control click on the clips in final cut and viewed the item properties/format to find this info. The Canon 7d is a DSLR but we use it for video. As for my workflow, the first thing I do is import the footage onto my computer and then drag the clips into mpeg streamclip. I choose apple prores 422 and uncheck the interlaced box. Once this is done I import the .mov files into final cut. The sequence automatically sets itself to whatever clip I drag in first so it originally set as 29.97. When I finished editing wedding video, I export it to a quicktime movie and choose whatever settings match the sequence, in this case apple prores 422 1920 x 1080 30p. Once that is done I use iDVD to burn the discs.
I knew something was wrong when I watched the quicktime movie and all the 30fps footage was jittery and most of the cross dissolves looked strange. That's when I figured out the footage was at two different frame rates. What I don't understand is why whatever the sequence is set at in final cut, the clips of the opposite frame rate look right but the clips set at the matching frame rate don't???

  • System heat up and frame rate reduces to 5 fps approx. while playing FIFA 12

The game works very well in first 2 minutes of startup but after that the fan speed increses abnormally and hard disk also heats up. this is followed by reduced frame rate about 5 fps which makes it very difficult to play the game. While this problem is not seen with earlier versions of FIFA 09 and FIFA 10.
    I am using HP-Pavilion dv4 1204tu laptop. 3GB ram. Windows Vista SP1 32-bit. and Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelator Series 4.

Interesting, and yet the video card worked beautifully through Mac OS X 10.5.x and 10.6.x until 10.6.5 came along. And the game binary hasn't changed, so the problem must be with the OS.
Further, if I understand the hierarchy of responsibilities in the software correctly, it's not surprising that the game worked with a video card it may not have listed as supported: Apple supplies an OpenGL library, and compatible drivers for the video cards it sells (that would include my video card, of course), and the games use the OpenGL library to do their graphics. So there's an Apple-supplied abstraction layer (or two) between the game and the video card. In principle, the game doesn't need to know what type of video card is present; just which of the many of the OpenGL features the OpenGL library supports, and whatever the OpenGL library allows it to discover about a video cards' functionality. That way, game developers don't have to create separate versions of their games, or huge amounts of their own video card abstraction code, in order to write a game that's compatible with all of the many video cards on the market at any given time, and all of the new video cards that will come along after the game is published. (I believe my ATI Radeon HD 4870 falls into the latter category.)

  • Slideshow in QT 7.1.3 in Windows: Frame Rate Fixed at 29.97

I have my sequentially numbered JPGS, Open Slide Show in File menu, highlight the first JPG, but then the Frame Rate is fixed at 29.97, no opportunity to set to 3 seconds per frame or 10 seconds a frame or anything except 29.97 per second.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program: no change. The program was downloaded recently from Apple and says that it is validating the install when the installer is run. Antivirus is switched off when the program is installed.

I thought this Windows version bug had been "squashed" in 7.0.4. Maybe not.
You should get two dialog windows when choosing "Image Sequence". If your files are properly sized and named sequentially you highlight just the first image file in the list and click OK. A second dialog window should then open that offers a "frame rate" for your import.
You say that it refuses to allow you to edit the frame rate at import? Bummer. A bug.
A simple workaround would be to accept any frame rate it offers and then open this new file. Select all (Control-A) and Copy (Control-C). This places your image sequence in your Clipboard.
Open any audio file and trim, or add to it, to fit the duration you need for your image sequence:
30 images at a duration of 3 seconds each would be 90 seconds of audio.
Select all of this newly trimmed audio and choose "Add to Selection & Scale" from the Edit menu. This will add your video track to the duration of the audio track.
Open the Movie Properties window and either "Extract" the video track or "Delete" the audio track and then Save As self-contained. mov file.
Maybe not what you wanted to hear.
Does the same issue occur under different user accounts? It may be something we could isolate.

  • How to get the frame rate of my application

    Hi again...
How can I get the frame rate of my application?
I also want the frame rate value to be the title of the frame, updated every second. How do I do that?
    thanks in advance...

To get the path where your application has been installed you have to do the following:
have a class called "what_ever" in the folder.
    then you do a litte:
    String path=
    what_ever.class.getRessource("what_ever.class").toString()
That get you a string like:
    file:/C:/Program Files/Cool_program/what_ever.class
Then you process the result a little to remove anything you don't want:
    path=path.substring(path.indexOf('/')+1),path.lastIndexOf('/'))
//Might be a little error here but you should find out //quickly if it's the case
And here you go, you have a nice
    C:/Program Files/Cool_program
which is the path to your application.
    Hooray

When saving an animated GIF in Elements 8 (running on Mac OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard) I can't modify the frame rate. It is set at the default .2 delay and can't be modified. Anyone know of a fix for this?

Thanks Barbara... I have used that very workaround already - but was hoping there was a solution so I could just do it in the app designed for this! So unfortunate that Adobe knows about this bug and hasn't fixed it!

  • Image Sequence Settings in QT Pro - what is the Frame Rate range available?

I am considering purchasing QT Pro for Windows. I wish to make a time lapse movie out of a series of pictures. I would like to know what the range of options is for the "Image Sequence Settings" in File->Open image Sequence... menu. Does is it go well beyond 1 second?
    Thanks!
    Chris

Frames rates are from 10 seconds per frame up to 60 frames per second.
I make many image sequence movies and just start with one frame per second.
I then "add scaled" to a properly timed audio only file. This way you can get nearly any frame rate you could ever need.

  • When is new frame rate for HD projects?

Yeah, "24 drop frame". I asked the Logic reps at last years' NAMM show if this was going to be added to the next version of Logic, but I got the ol' blank stare -- they had never heard of it! Hopefully by now they have. I agree, this new frame rate needs to be added. Glad you brought this up!

  • Video doesn't slow when added to timeline of different frame rate

I'm having trouble understanding what's going on here.  I have a video shot at 59.94 fps, and I add it to a sequence that is set at 29.97 fps.  It plays back normally which makes sense if premiere is dropping frames by 1/2, but the drop frame indicator says that it isn't dropping frames.  The clip also runs the same length.  The interpret frame rate for the clip in the project window says 59.94 fps, so if it's added to a sequence that is set at 29.97 fps and it's NOT dropping frames, shouldn't it be slowed down?

OK cool thank you very much.  So I've been doing some research to figure out the best way to edit this project.  The problem is that I have some GoPro videos shot at 1080X1920 and 59.94 fps and some at 480X840 and 240 fps.  But the catch is I want to make the final product work well for Youtube.  This is how I feel I should go about getting the best quality for my final video.
    1.  Set the sequence settings to 720X1280 (which is what I will export as so that the 480X840 doesn't loose as much quality compared to having to resize up to 1080X1920 to match the other clips).  I don't think there's much quality loss in down-scaling the 1080X1920 to 720X1280 (if any, or is there?), so it's kind of a happy medium for both frame sizes that I have and it's still good for Youtube.
    2.  Apparently Youtube really works well with 29.97 fps, so this is what I will set the sequence frame rate at.
**Another side question I have is what if my sequence frame rate is set at 29.97fps and I interpret the frame rate of a 59.94fps clip as 29.97fps and add it to the sequence.  Now if I use the rate stretch tool to speed up the now slowed down clip to 200% so that it plays at normal speed.  Will Premiere remove frames to speed up the clip or does it really increase the rate of the frames so that I don't loose any frames?**  My guess is if I export at 29.97fps it will remove half of the frames.
Is it not possible to have an exported movie clip that contains multiple frame rates?

  • Inserting old swf into new fla with different frame rate

Hi, I'm trying to insert an old banner ad into a new Flash site.  The problem is, the banner I made at 20 frames per second, and the Flash site is set to 41, so it literally plays the banner twice as fast.  Any ideas as to what I can do about this?  Thank you.

A few of them I may have the original source files on disk.  Do you know what's the easiest way to transpose them to the higher frame rate?
For the ones I don't have, I should open the swf file in the new site and add a frame between each already existing frame?
Yes I imported the swf, I'm kind of just finding my way around Flash and I don't know how to load them dynamically.  If I did load them dynamically, would they play at their original frame rate?
