Frame Rate & Resolution change with synchronized clip

Does anyone know why a Canon 7d file recorded at 1920x1080 29.97fps changes to a 1280x720 23.97fps file when a synchronized clip with a separate audio file is created?
After selecting the synchronized clip in the event browser I can edit the compound clip settings to change back to 1920x1080, but 23.98 is the only framerate selectable.  The sync worked beautifully.  My import preferences are set to create optimized media - 422 ProRes.

Well, I went to the clip that was mentioned in the source file and selected it to do a frame rate conversion and its source file was correct. I hit cancel and went back to the my desired clip and the time the source file was correct.
Doing a few more conversion the correct source file doesn't always come up correctly, but I just bounce around selecting a few different clips without actually doing the conversions and it eventually fixes itself...
It's just buggy!

  • PAL -  NTSC frame rate not changing

    I'm using compressor for the first time (version 2.0.1) and I'm trying to do a standards conversion of PAL to NTSC.
    I selected advance format conversion DV NTSC. It works fine except the frame rate is left at 25 fps even though the inspector had 29.97 in it before I submitted. I've tried it a few times now but the frame rate isn't changing to NTSC rates.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Mike

    How are you determining the ending framerate (what utility or method)?
    Also, the QuickTime Player always uses a 30fps counter, thus it can be a little misleading if you go simply by the head position counter.
    As for using Compressor 2 to do standards conversion, unless you explicitly turn on the new Frame Controls feature and use the Rate Conversion option you will just get resizing and frame duplication when you convert from 25fps PAL to 29.97 NTSC.
    Perhaps, however, you two are using some other technique to determine framerate (I'm just looking at what the QuickTime Player reports and also by counting the actual displayed frames when I single-step the movie -- thus my original question). I've not done a lot of standards conversion, but I just tried to twice-convert a short NTSC video segment and it seemed to work fine when I reconverted from PAL back to the original NTSC. However, since I'm NTSC based I had to create my own PAL after starting from an NTSC original (probably not a completely valid test since Compressor is doing both conversions).
    So, another question would be what is the source of your PAL video? I'm sure you did not "synthesize" it as I did, but maybe there is a conflict between your source and Compressor.
    In any case, I'm using Compressor 2.0.1 and I just converted an NTSC clip to PAL and back again (PAL to NTSC) and the framerates seemed to work fine (using Compressor's Advanced Format Conversions presets). When I went from NTSC to PAL I ended up with a 25fps movie that had dropped frames from the original. Then, when I went from PAL to NTSC I ended up with a 29.97fps movie that had frame duplicates (unless I explicitly use the Frame Controls -- Rate Conversion option and then with the higher quality options I get newly generated frames using Compressor's so-called optical flow technology).
    Also, Mike, your tag line indicates that you are using Mac OS X 10.2.X, but that can't be the case if you are using Compressor 2 since it requires QT7 which is only available on 10.3.9 and 10.4.X.

  • Best frame rate , resolution and shutter speed Canon XF 305 for chromakeying

    Hi,
    I have to shoot some footage with the Canon XF305 (green screen Chromakeying) And the only progressive frame rates I can choose are ( 25P 1920x1080) or (50Pand 25P 1280x720).
    What shutter speed do I have to use?
    What will be the best quality choice for keying?! The output will be Vimeo at the end. I have a Xenon 6core 3.2, Memory 24 GIG, GTX580.
    Of course I know the best resolution, but I mean the best choices for keying.
    It's done in PAL.
    Thanks David

    A high suhutter speed is improtant for crisp edges, especially if your codec is not frame-based, because your subjects will have little or no motion blur. 125th seocnd at least. faster if you can get it. Requires lots of light. You must not trade off depth of field because focus is critical to good keys, too, and you must not add gain because noise will degrade your key.

  • Frame rate goes crazy with editable text sprite

    This one is annoying - I have a lot of things that depend on
    a steady,
    predictable frame rate. But whenever you have the mouse
    button held down on
    an editable text sprite, the frame rate goes through the
    roof. I don't know
    what the numbers are exactly, but everything runs MUCH faster
    than it
    should. This can result in some major timing mis-syncs for
    other events
    happening on the stage. It looks like the OS is taking over
    or something
    when you're selecting text on a text sprite. Is there any
    easy way around
    this? Or should I just try and keep editable text sprites
    from being used
    on the same frame as time-sensitive code? I'm thinking I
    could maybe get
    around it by making the sprite non-editable and changing the
    text manually
    based on keypresses, but that sounds like a lot of work to
    basically
    reinvent the wheel here for something that should just work,
    you know?

    "exitframe" in over half a

    behavior.
    Well, what I do is something like:
    global timeBase
    on exitFrame
    if the ticks - timeBase > 2 then
    repeat while the ticks - timeBase > 2
    timeBase = timeBase + 2
    gameLoop()
    end repeat
    end if
    end
    So, even if the movie is lagging behind, the gameLoop()
    executes at regular
    intervals. If more than 2 ticks have passed between this
    frame and the
    previous, it will execute the gameLoop() script multiple
    times in order to
    catch up. All the important time-dependant stuff runs in
    gameLoop().
    This is not what the problem is, however. Most of my
    animations on screen
    are being shown as Film Loop sprites or in some cases
    animated GIFs, and
    these are what depend on the steady frameRate. If you click
    on an editable
    text object, the animations all suddenly speed up until you
    release the
    mouse button. I guess it's really more of an aesthetic thing
    than anything
    else, but it just looks really silly when everything suddenly
    runs
    super-fast just because you clicked on a text sprite.

  • 23.98 frame rate gets changed to 29.97?

    I have a file that is a 23.98 frame rate.
    I am trying to create a simple DVD file.
    I use the pre-set in compressor for best quality.
    I changed no other settings.
    For some reason- the DVD files are compressed into 29.97(?)
    When i play these in DVD studio pro I get interlaced lines and it looks very bad.
    I imported the source file (23.98)- it's a bit large- but I was able to view it in playdown. And it looked fine.
    I NEED to get these files reduced for DVD studio pro- BUT I DO NOT want to alter the frame rate.
    I tried going into some deeper settings in Compressor and making sure everything was reading 23.98 progressive and it was.
    It still spits out a 29.97 file.
    help?

    What camera was the footage shot on? If you open the movie in QT what does it say about the format?
    (A screen shot of the inspector window would be best.)

  • Time line change with Movie Clip!

    Help, I want a movie clip to interact with another to change the scene.
    this is my code on the "Door":
    onClipEvent(enterframe) {
         if (_root.char.hitTest(this)) {
              _root.gotoAndStop("Game2", 1);
    Game2 is my next scene name.
    but it is not working!
    Why is that!
    the other movie clip's instance is "char":

    Take the code off of the object and place it in the main timeline, modifying it as shown...
    this.onEnterFrame = function(){
         if (char.hitTest(Door)) {   // replace "Door" with the instance name you gave it
               delete this.onEnterFrame;
               gotoAndStop("Game2", 1);

    Thanks, how would you synchronize the loops?  I have gone through the Getting Started exercises and manual.
    Why would synchronization matter? Did you want them to run independantly at their own speed or not?
    Regardless, there's a synchronization pallette with functions for this, as Occurance.
    Other solutions include a common loop counter and a case structure executing every X'th iteration, or having the faster loop send a queue or event every X'th loop that controls the slower loop.

  • Help with sequence settings in final cut for project with 2 different frame rates.

    I really need help with this one! I finished editing a wedding video and realized after exporting that it was filmed in two different frame rates. This has happened before but I converted the footage to match and fixed the problem. In this case, the footage is part 30fps and part 60fps. The majority of it was filmed in 30fps. I cannot convert the 60 to 30 without the slow motion effect which I do not need so I have to find a way to burn this to a DVD without it looking messed up! The video was shot with two Canon 7ds if that helps anything. The first sequence I set at 29.97 and exported as a quicktime movie and all the footage filmed in 60 looked perfect and the footage in 30 looked jittery. Then I tried the sequence at 59.97 and it switched. The footage filmed at 30 looked good and the 60 was cropped in. I am so confused! Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks for your help Michael! The frame rates are 29.97 1920 x 1080 and 59.94 1280 x 720. I did a control click on the clips in final cut and viewed the item properties/format to find this info. The Canon 7d is a DSLR but we use it for video. As for my workflow, the first thing I do is import the footage onto my computer and then drag the clips into mpeg streamclip. I choose apple prores 422 and uncheck the interlaced box. Once this is done I import the .mov files into final cut. The sequence automatically sets itself to whatever clip I drag in first so it originally set as 29.97. When I finished editing wedding video, I export it to a quicktime movie and choose whatever settings match the sequence, in this case apple prores 422 1920 x 1080 30p. Once that is done I use iDVD to burn the discs.
    I knew something was wrong when I watched the quicktime movie and all the 30fps footage was jittery and most of the cross dissolves looked strange. That's when I figured out the footage was at two different frame rates. What I don't understand is why whatever the sequence is set at in final cut, the clips of the opposite frame rate look right but the clips set at the matching frame rate don't???

  • Low frame rate even with high bit rate

    I am using a Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks (the model that supports UVC per Logitech's website) with a new Mac Pro and iChat. Whether I do a video iChat over the internet or one within my internal network, the fps per the connection doctor of my camera is about 6 fps, even if the bit rate is over 2000 (which is what is was when I did the internal network chat). I can't find any setting where I can increase the fps rate, I can only increase the bit rate in the camera preferences in iChat.
    The camera is capable of up to 30 fps and when I do a video recording with it in QuickTime Pro and play it back, QuickTime Pro shows the frame rate as 30. So the camera is connected properly and is working properly. Any ideas on how to get the fps up to 15 in iChat (which seems to be the maximum, per the MacBook Pro I used for my internet network test above)? Thank you.

    Thanks for the reply, Tony. Changing the bit rate limit to 500 did not cause the frame rate to change. On my test with my internal network if I had the limit set to none then bit rate was over 2000 but frame rate was only 5-6. When I limited the bit rate to 500 it dropped while the frame rate remained unchanged a 5-6 fps.
    When I was doing an internet chat I also changed the bit rate limit to be none, 500, or 1Mbps to see what would happen and the connection doctor showed my frame rate staying at 5-6 and my bit rate staying below 100 (so changing the maximum bit rate setting made no difference). Meanwhile, the person I was chatting with had a frame rate of 15 and a bit rate of about 250.
    I'm on a cable modem just like the person I was doing the internet chat with, so I guess the problem is something to do with iChat and my Logitech web cam, not my internet connection.

  • Frame rate conversions with DVCPROHD

    Where can I get a decent, straight forward answers to questions on capturing HD material via Kona onto my FCP. I am mostly interested in frame rate conversion methods when capturing from AJ-HD1200A Panasonic deck via BNC. I have searched the web and have found limited answers. Apples pdf on DVCPROHD frame rate conversions do not address many glitches that pop up.
    Is there a web source on this. I'm not looking for a technical book or manual.
    I just need simple answers if possible.
    Please help.

    So...
    Is there a procedure to follow on the process of frame rate conversions, either with compressor or Natress, which I dont have btw.
    I have been capturing at 720p 59.94 as instructed on the manual by apple which comes with the FRC plug in. But have been having several problems. Too many to list.

  • Log and transfer not changing frame rate to slow motion on P2 cards...

    Hello.
    I swear I have done this before on final cut studio 2 and it came out correctly, but for some reason this time, either myself or the computer is making an error. (chances are it's me).
    Basically, I'm logging and transferring footage that was shot on P2 at 50 fps, and my intention is to import it at 23.98 fps. I thought this is something that naturally happens in the log and transfer process, but i guess not?
    My project was set up via easy set up at panasonic dvcproHD frame rate 23.98... and I'm logging an d transferring directly into my browser but the f frame rate stays at 50 fps. (footage was shot in England to be incorporated into a video already shot in America).

    I thought this is something that naturally happens in the log and transfer process, but i guess not?
    Your guess is right...it DOES NOT slow it down upon injest. ONLY if you set the camera up to shoot 720p25 and then choose the 50 frame rate (I hear this is what you do...I am not a camera guy, so...), then it will import slowed down. But you have to set the camera up CORRECTLY. The first time I imported slow mo, it was 60p...and I had to use the Frame Rate Converter to slow the clips. Then my camera guy figured out the setting in camera and BOOM...there it was.
    So...I guess you are NOT wrong...actually. It just needs to be set up IN CAMERA in order to do what you want.
    and I don't know if the Frame Rate Converter works for PAL footage...stupid, but...no...Stupid.

  • Frame rate changes after psd imort

    I'm not so experienced in Motion. When i start i use a PAL preset to create a new project. After that i want to import a psd file as project, in order to animate all layers. After that the frame rate has changed in 30 fps! I can't find anything in de user manual about it.
    G4 pb 1,67   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1.5 gb ram

    You're creating 2 separate projects when you do this - one when you created a project using a PAL preset, then a second time when you imported a PSD file AS a project (this creates a brand-new project using the PSD file, it doesn't import it into the one you already created). The frame rate of a project can't be changed after it's been created.
    What you need to do is create a new PAL project, then drag & drop the PSD file from the File Browser into your PAL project, hold there a second and choose "import all layers" from the drop menu, or use the Import command (NOT "Import As Project") to bring your PSD into your project.

  • 2 questions - one about Frame Rates, the other about Rendering

    These are two areas I need to learn more about.
    Any answers to my 2 specific questions below would be appreciated, but also, I need to gain a deeper understanding of these 2 areas, so if you have any recommendations on how/where to learn more, I'd appreciate that, as well.
    1. I'm trying to copy a tape from an older 8mm Sony Handycam to my Canon XL-1 mini-DV, in order to be able to import the footage into FCP, however, it comes out all messed up, skipping and jumping in a way that makes me think the frame rate of the two cameras is not in sync. I don't know of a way to change, or even to confirm, the frame rate of either one of these cameras and have found nothing online. Yet, I was able to successfully copy a tape a few years ago, with the same equipment I'm using now, so I'm thinking maybe the frame rate was changed on one of these??? I don't know.
    2. I've never really understood rendering - why some clips require it while others do not. The latest example was with footage from my Canon and a different (newer) Sony DCR-SR68. Because the format of this Sony is wider than that of the Canon, I shot it knowing that I'd be cropping off some of the left and right of the frame. So, in FCP, when I click and drag the corner of the wireframe in the canvas to make the Sony footage fill the square, it needs to be rendered in the Timeline. However, if I do the same with the Canon footage, it does not require rendering. I'm trying to understand why. If it makes a difference, the Canon footage was imported directly from the camera, whereas the Sony footage needed to be first imported into iMovie and saved as an MPEG before being imported into FCP.
    Thanks a lot.
    J

    Hi Mr. Chappell,
    Many older tapes have sat on shelves etc. for many years, It is
    a good idea to,
    First make sure your 8mm is mechanically sound, throw in a blank or
    unimportant tape and make sure it will play etc. without causing any
    phisical damage to the tape.
    Then put in a tape to transfer and Fast forward to the end and then rewind
    to the begginning, this will re-pack/tension the tape.
    then play the tape back briefly while looking thru the viewfinder or monitoring
    with a tv, hopefully all looks well.
    then connect and transfer to the mini-dv (best to use a tbc, but should work
    without)then playback the DV tape briefly, again, with either viewfinder or TV,
    if all looks good you should have no problems unless they are related
    to capture settings (they should match the DV cameras video and audio sampling
    rate, check for 32K).
    Hope this helps,

  • Determing Frame rate

    Good afternoon Apple Forum friends
    I was wondering if someone could tell me how to determine the frame rate of video that I have saved in Final Cut Pro. It looks like it is 25, definately lower than 29, and I would like to figure out how to change it back to the original speed. please advise, and thank you.
    Mike

    NOTE: When you copy and paste footage from a sequence with one frame rate to one with a differing frame rate, gaps will appear between many clips in the timeline. Not all of them, but periodically, and very frequently. This is something that will have to be fixed manually. You can try the CLOSE ALL GAPS feature, but I haven't had luck with this fixing everything, or doing it right.
    They are students, so I am very glad that they make this mistake now, instead of later.
