Frame rate shifts on imported P2 media

We are getting a strange frame rate shift on some P2 media we are importing into FCP.
The media looks fine and plays fine in P2 viewer on these few shots, but when it's imported the video speeds up and the clip shows that it's 8 fps or 12.99 or some other variation. I also noted that the data rate shows up as different in these imported clips from the clips that play correctly.
This problem is also occurring on several long interview clips where right in the middle of the shot, the video speeds way up, but the audio continues at normal rates. Then in one instance about 9 minutes later, it just goes back to the proper rate. As I said, these segments look fine in the P2 viewer. This only happens on some shots after they're imported.
Has anyone had any experience with anything like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,

What frame size & frame rate is your footage?
If it's not a frame rate with Advance Pulldown, uncheck the "removed Advanced Pulldown..." checkbox in the Log & Transfer Import Preferences (access them by clicking on the gear at the top of the Log & Transfer window).

  • Frame Rate change when importing video into FCP 5

I am importing an HD h264 file into FCP 5. The video when opened in QT shows that it's frame rate is 30fps, what I exported it at. When I Import the file into FCP 5 it changes the frame rate to 29.97fps, which is causing major video/audio syncing issues. Any thoughts on how to stop the frame rate change when importing? I tried changing my system settings and audio/video settings before the import to match the file and it is still picking it up at 29.97, major headache especially since I'm cutting industrial.

yeah I'm kinda limited, working with video for the web and I'm making revisions as to what has been already posted. The H264s are the originals per say as we are using a screen capturing program to obtain the video, I could re export the originals at a truer format, but with the resources I'm given, its not truly the option I can afford to take. I've found a workaround through using imovie of all things, but I rather be in FCP. I've done some editing with h264s before and this is the first time I've seen this happen, it kind of reminds me of when I had an editor a few years back digitize video that was drop frame as non-drop.

  • After Effects CC import "Sequence Footage" frame rate settings in "Import" preferences

Just started using the new AE CC (v12 as Adobe will not refer to it as) I noticed one thing that seems to work differently from CS6 and that is in the preferences for import Sequence footage settings.  It doesn't seem to work normally, at least for me.  I don't know if this is an issue related to how AE CC works with the cloud but the dfault frame rate for sequence footage importing is 30fps.  I am trying to import footage that is natively 23.97 at 24 fps.  So like in CS6 I go to Preferences - Import - Sequence Footage - frame per second and change it from 30 to 24 frames per second.  Closed the software, opened it back up, checked the settings and saw that they took, it still says 24 frames per second like I told it.  But when I import a piece of 23.976 footage, it comes in at 23.976 as opposed to the 24 fps I set it as.  Same goes for 30 fps footage, it comes in at 30 fps and not 24.  User error is always my first assumption, I'm not proud i just want it to work, am I doing something wrong or just confused?  Thanks for any help.  p.s.  help is not someone responding with, "I don't know" or "I don't have AECC yet".  I know somebody is going to!

    Hi Tim,
WOW!  Thanks for the super-fast reply!  As soon as I posted this I realised I should have mentioned that I am importing DPX files.  I do import quicktimes as well but know that the footage import does not apply to a single file, only a sequence of files.  But I still wonder if I may be either doing something wrong or am just a little confused.  I have been using After Effects since CS3 doing compositing for film and I always use DPX sequences.  I did a bunch of comparing and back and forth with AE CS6 and AECC while trying to figure this out.  I always set my preferences up when I upgrade before I start working and I always set them up the same.  I have been using CS6 since last July and it still works the same.  What I did is imported five or six different DPX sequences, some were rendered out as 24 fps, some at 30 and some at 23.976.  Assuming AE looks at the metadata to decide how to auto interpret, AE CC opened them all at their native frame rates of the just mentioned 24, 30 and 23.976 respectively, even though I told it to import at 24fps in the preferences.  I also imported the same files in AE CS6 and they all opened at 24 fps like always.  I know I can change the frame rate in the "Interpret footage" option, that is what I have been doing today so that I can work with footage in 24fps but since I have it set in the preferences to import image sequences at 24fps, I am perplexed as to why it does not do so, so I do not have to interpret the footage to my preferred frame rate, as is the case in AE CS6 as well as it was in CS 5.5 and CS 3.  Since I was lucky enough to have an Adobe employee chime in Tim, I would be curious to see what you may find if you recreated this scenario.  Would it be possible for you or someone at Adobe to set the sequence footage import frame rate to 24 fps in the preferences then try to open a piece of footage that is natively 23.976 fps in both AE CS6 and AE CC?  Like I said, I certainly beleive I may be doing something wrong but I would be very curious to see what you find on your side.  I would not be suprised if it imported at 24 fps in AE CS6 and 23.976 fps in AE CC.

  • Frame rate Conversion Upon Import

    Hello All,
Strange things in my FCP Studio. I converted an mkv file to Prores422 frame rate 23.976 using QT 7. When I import it the Vid rate says its at 10fps???? The info tab in quicktime says the frame rate is 23.976. Then it makes me render???
Also, I should be able to mix prores422 and prores422(HQ) in the same sequence without having to render,(assuming my sequence settings are correct?) Thanks in advance.
    JY

Files converted from non-camera masters sometimes need a hit on the side.  use CINEMA TOOLS to CONFORM the footage to 24.  That'll do it.

  • Frame rate changing on import?

I have video shot on a panasonic sdr-h18, the file comes up as a .mod, I use mpeg streamclip to demux it to unscaled m2v and .aiff, all is fine so far. According to mpeg streamclip, both the old and the new file are at 29.97, and quicktime agrees. FCE 3.51 imports it and says it's at 30fps (the sequence & project are 29.97, as are other video materials in the session). This is driving me nuts! Any ideas?

Well, FCE does distinguish between the rates, and it lists videos of both frame rates in the session... and I've encountered sync drifting on edits on I've made on very long imported video in the past (over 45 minute long source material).
I used the unscaled function on streamclip for two reasons:
    1. The original video was shot at 704x480, and it will absolutely be cropped and rescaled to an undetermined size later. I erroneously thought the video quality would be better unscaled, but after reading your post I re-imported it via your method and the video quality was noticibly improved. (It was also imported at 29.97 - go figure!)
    2. To reduce the files sizes. The .m2v + .aiff files roughly double the file size of the original .mod file, but the .mov file quadruples it! Also, once all the editing is completed, I can easily dump all the .aiff files as they won't be used in the final product (it's a music video)

  • Frame rate change on import

I have a Quicktime movie, format 16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    H.264, 640 x 480, Millions 30 fps.
When I import this movie into FCP, it imports the soundtrack correctly, correct duration, but the videotrack becomes 10fps and only a third of the video track is imported.
    Any ideas?

H.264 isn't a codec that FCP edits well. It isn't designed as an editing codec. You need to convert it to DV/NTSC. Use MPEG STREAMCLIP from www.squared5.com. It's free.

  • Imported quick time movie frame rate

I have just used Quicktime to convert some old royalty free archive footage. When the conversion is done, the new movie is in the correct format for PAL at 25 frames per second. However, when I import into FCE4, the frame rate of the imported movie drops back to 10fps. Any ideas?

What are the specs of your clips before conversion? How are you going about converting it exactly? What are the specs of your clips according to Quicktime Movie Info after conversion?

  • Relink project clips with different frame rate

Somehow the clips in my project sequence ended up with a different frame rate (25) than the original media files (23.95), and they are no longer linked -- maybe this happened during import from iMovie.  When I try to relink project files to source media, I get an error message saying they cannot be relinked because they have a different frame rate.  I changed the sequence framerate to 23.95 (by creating a new project with 23.95 as the frame rate, then copying and pasting the other timeline into it), but all the clips remain at 25, so the problem remains.
How can I change the clip properties to frame rate 23.95 so I can link to the original media?
    Thanks.

The media got unlinked importing the project and events from iMovie to Final Cut.
I've attached screen shots with all the specs.

  • Slideshow in QT 7.1.3 in Windows: Frame Rate Fixed at 29.97

I have my sequentially numbered JPGS, Open Slide Show in File menu, highlight the first JPG, but then the Frame Rate is fixed at 29.97, no opportunity to set to 3 seconds per frame or 10 seconds a frame or anything except 29.97 per second.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program: no change. The program was downloaded recently from Apple and says that it is validating the install when the installer is run. Antivirus is switched off when the program is installed.

I thought this Windows version bug had been "squashed" in 7.0.4. Maybe not.
You should get two dialog windows when choosing "Image Sequence". If your files are properly sized and named sequentially you highlight just the first image file in the list and click OK. A second dialog window should then open that offers a "frame rate" for your import.
You say that it refuses to allow you to edit the frame rate at import? Bummer. A bug.
A simple workaround would be to accept any frame rate it offers and then open this new file. Select all (Control-A) and Copy (Control-C). This places your image sequence in your Clipboard.
Open any audio file and trim, or add to it, to fit the duration you need for your image sequence:
30 images at a duration of 3 seconds each would be 90 seconds of audio.
Select all of this newly trimmed audio and choose "Add to Selection & Scale" from the Edit menu. This will add your video track to the duration of the audio track.
Open the Movie Properties window and either "Extract" the video track or "Delete" the audio track and then Save As self-contained. mov file.
Maybe not what you wanted to hear.
Does the same issue occur under different user accounts? It may be something we could isolate.

  • Frame rate issue

Has anybody else had problems getting after effects to interpolate the frame rate acurately on import of a 24p file?   I have exported a quicktime and dv24 avi out of premiere in 23.987fps and when I import into After Effects it assumes it is 29.977fps. I have imported the file back into Premiere to double check that the files are 23.987 and it is.  Is this a bug?

It's not really a bug, but more like an omission.
AE uses a text fille with information on how to interpret different footage types. The problem is that SD 23.976 progressive files are truly recorded as 29.97 with no real way to tell them apart except for a flag added by the editing application used to capture the content (assuming it's tape-based). AE can't see this flag automatically at this time for this kind of footage items.
So, if you have (say) 30 such footage files in your project, this would be a  fast workaround:
    1. Select any of the 23.976 fps files, right click and go to Interpret Footage > Main (or press the new Interpret footage button in CS4, at the lower left corner of the project panel).
    2. In the remove pulldown menu, choose one of the 24P/24PA options (24P or 24PA depend on the camera and/or recording mode set in the camera).
    3. Still with the clip selected, right click and go to Interpret Footage > Remember Interpretation.
    4. Select all other 23.976 fps clips, right click and go to Interpret Footage > Apply interpretation.
This way, you could correct the intrepretation for dozens of items in 30 seconds. It's still a workaround, of course.

  • FCE frame rate problem?!

Hi, if someone could help me with this asap that would be so helpful?!
Basically I'm having a problem with the frame rate in Final Cut Express. I was using 3 different Sequences to edit different clips/audio in. I then wanted to put them all in to the same Sequence but when I did the clips were flashing different colours and wouldn't play properly. All of the clips were 30fps however the project frame rate was 29.97fps? How did the frame rate of the project change because I didn't know you could change it and how can I change it back?! Thansk :-)

29.97fps is the actual frame rate for NTSC (North American) video.  It has historically been called "30fps" for convenience sake.  However in recent years true 30fps capability has appeared even in some consumer camcorders.  This can result in some subtle problems if you mix real 30fps material in a standard 29.97fps sequence.  The "change" you refer to could occur if your clips were recorded at a real 30fps and you put them in a 29.97fps sequence.  FCE will try to conform the clips to the sequence settings.
For completeness, here is what FCE supports:
SD video at the following frame rates.  FCE imports DV video as QuickTime/Apple DV during capture from your camcorder
    DV-NTSC @ 29.97 fps
    DV-PAL @ 25 fps
HD video at the following frame rates.  FCE transcodes all HD video (HDV and AVCHD)  to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec during capture from your camcorder.
    720p25,
    720p30
    1080i50
    1080i60

  • Import mp4 h.264 from camcorder results in wrong frame rate

I have recently bought a PAL Samsung VP HMX20C camcorder that records 1080 50i or 1080 25p but when I import the video files into Final Cut Pro 6 the frame rate of the clips are 59.29 and 29.29 respectively. If these files are played with Quicktime or Mpeg Streamclip the info says that they are 50 fps and 25 fps. What do I need to do to get them to be recognised as PAL clips in FCP?
    Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for your replies Tom. Can you recommend the fastest way to convert these clips as I have tried the FCP Media Manager and it won't let me change the frame rate back to 25fps. I would like to know the quickest and easiest way to start editing with this media as the reason I bought this camcorder was to reduce the amount of time to ingest the footage as I was using DV PAL tapes before and had to ingest them in real time.

  • Re-connecting media to different frame rate clip

    Hi guys,
Wondering whether anyone can help me out to solve an error I've made...
So, I've basically completed an edit (some episodes on Final Cut Pro X, some on Final Cut 7) only to find out that I'd transcoded the media at the incorrect frame rate, 23.98 instead of 25fps. Yup, pretty big error. And now I need to redeliver the projects in the 25fps format.
I've transcoded a clip to the correct 25fps rate and tried to reconnect that clip to the 23.98fps one in the timeline, but I'm unable to reconnect as the clips are of differing frame rates.
Has anyone got any ideas how I can reconnect the clips or any suggestions that will make this situation easier to rectify rather than copying out the entire edit which will cause me to spend a week crying into my keyboard.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Olly

    Hmmm...
Tried this but it brings in the media that is 23.98 and there's no way I can tell to link to the new 25fps clips. Unless there's anything else I can do? Any other way to match the clips? (the 25fps clips are that little bit longer in duration) I also have some edits in fcp7. By using cinema tools in that would I be able to change the frame rates and link up to the new 25fps?
Cheers for the advice though Russ, this way does give me the template of the 23.98 edit so that I can match the new 25fps shots to, but it's gonna be a long process.

  • Importing EDL project frame rate is always 23.98

    Hi There,
I'm importing a 24 frame EDL. All of the import settings are set to 24 fps. However on import, the project frame rate is always 23.98.
I have added the number 24 to the defaulteframerate section of the preferences file, but no luck.
Anyone found a solution to this?
    Thanks

Just a wild guess since I don't normally work in 24 fps... all of us NTSC-biased types accept that 23.98 (more accurately, if not absolutely precisely expressed as 23.976) is the "pull-down" frame rate that results from a telecine transfer, and is the rate that is assumed, corresponding to 29.97 or 1000/1001.
This framerate is emulated in a number of "Digital Cinema" electronic origin formats.
Absolute 24.0000 fps is a bit rare in these parts and in reality probably would only come up if one were working with a dpx image sequence properly scanned, not telecined.
Not saying that 24.000 does not exist -- I'd say that it is just as uncomfortable a fit in 25 fps-land as it is here! And Color / Final Touch has been notoriously bad with 25 fps.
    good luck and merry christmas....

  • Can I import clips using a frame rate of 60 or higher?

I have a sony cx260v that allows me to record in a rate of 60 fps. However when I attempt to upload the footage taken in this frame rate to iMovie 11 9.0.4 it shows as a blocked clip and does not allow me to upload.
    Any ideas?

Yes, you can re-import them, but it's not that straightforward, and you loose some quality in the process. Search for "MPEG Streamclip" or "DVD camcorder" in this forum, and you will find lots of answers.
Alternatively, you can make data DVDs with your DV clips. Simply pop in an empty DVD, and drap the DV clips you want to export into the burn folder. A normal DVD can hold about 20 minutes of DV clips, a dual layer DVD twice as much.
