Frame size in finished film

Hi
I have two different sources of footage in one project. One is from a miniDV and has a Frame Size of 720 x 576, the other is from a digital camera that has a Frame Size of 320 x 240.
If I were to use these in iMovie, the exported file would automatically be adjusted so that the 320 x 240 footage fills the screen. In FCE however, it doesn't do that.
I have to edit the footage in FCE so does anyone know if I can adjust settings so all edited footage (ie in the Canvas and Timeline) fills the screen?
Many thanks
Adam

In FCE you can either open the clip in the Viewer and scale it up; or open it in the Canvas, turn on Image+Wireframe and drag a corner to enlarge the image.
I think if it were me, however, I would use MPEG Streamclip to scale the clip up to the proper size and then re-import into FCE. Just my preference.

  • Compression: what's right frame size for anamorphic film using H.264 Lan?

i have an anamorphic (16:9) 25 minute film i want to export using Compression's H.264 Lan option (for web-posting purposes). What settings do I need for the frame size to keep it at its original proportions? i thought that 720 x 405 would do the trick, but it is slightly off, makes some of the images rather oval.
    thanks much....

    x & patrick,
thanks for your help & desire for further clarification.
i am dealing with a sequence composed largely of footage from a panasonic pv-gs500 using the widescreen mode. i don't know if it's "true" anamorphic or 16:9, but it's on an anamorphic timeline and looks just fine there.
i experimented all nite last nite trying to get the right ratio for the compression type i mentioned. it looks like i finally succeeded using 740 x 416. i have no idea WHY this works, but when viewing the final exported product, it looks pretty perfect. i think it cuts off a teeny tiny bit of the height, not even noticeable.
any explanation of WHY this ratio works would be welcome, to help along my understanding....

  • Keeping 16.9 fram size with a little blur edge

    Hi,
I am wondering about frame size and the right work flow.
I have a little blue blur at the bottom of the film (not all the time)
I see this as I watch on the monitor in 16.9 pal
Which is the correct way to remove this and keeping 16.9.
1: size it up a little
2; crop it and the size it up a little
3; crop it but then it’s not 16.9
    that was it.

Thanks for your reply but lets say if this was to be shown on the big screen then the bottom edge would be unevan. So this would be done only on the finished move in the nested seq. I guess.

  • Advice on sequence settings - frame size for VHS video in FCP

    Hello,
I was hoping that I could get some advice on editing and output for video captured from VHS Tapes to ensure the best quality possible.
My current workflow to digitize the VHS tapes is:
VHS signal from JVC S7600u with TBC into ADVC 300 (no de-interlace or other filters set) into a Mac Pro via firewire.  Capture preset in FCP is DV NTSC 48khz.
Once in FCP - the captured VHS video frame size is 720 X 480, Vid rate is 29.97, pixel aspect is NTSC-CCIR 601 and field dominance is lower (even)
    My questions are:
If my final destination is for You Tube sharing , are these the best sequence/ frame size settings or should I convert the sequence frame size to 640 X 480, or should I leave at 720 X 480 while working in FCP and then output to Compressor and select the H264 you tube sharing video setting and change the frame size to 640 X 480?
Should I de- interlace for internet/youtube destination?
    Should I de-interlace for DVD/TV destination?
If I want to burn the finished project to DVD and watch the video on a progressive montitor/ TV screen, what would be the best settings/frame size for that?
If any of you out there have experience with editing vcr/analog video in FCP and have a good workflow to ensure best quality, I would really appreciate  any advice/suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.

Digitize to 720X480 frame size in FCP. In compressor, your YouTube preset will automatically deinterlace and a square pixel aspect ratio. No deinterlacing for DVD.

  • Sequence frame size/black border

I created several sequences in Final Cut Pro 4, which all seem to have the same settings, but some of them have a black border around the picture and a smaller picture size. When I export a Quick Time Movie of the sequence, the boarder still exists in iDVD.
How do I make the picture fill the entire frame?
My footage was filmed on Mini DV.
My clip and sequence settings are: 29.97 fps (video rate), 720x480 (frame size), DV/DVC Pro (compressor), NTSC - CCIR 601 (pixel aspect) 48.00 KHz (audio rate)
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Cala
As you say, when you set your sequence as JPEG accidently, and keeping the aspect ratio and everything as you say, it shouldn't have to reduce your frame size of your media.
Have you tried to make a new sequence with the preset settings for DV and put the referred clip on it? It should present it normally, filling all the frame.
Checking on your screenshot, it seems to present it as if it were capture it like Photo-JPEG Offline edit. It is the same way appears the clips when are captured with that setting on a DV preset sequence.
I don't know how much problem would be to recapturing that clip again, before put your sequence settings on the preset for DV, as the same for the Capture preset. Then, it must work all fine.
About the configuration between Panther 3.9, QT 6.5 and FCP 4.5, in my case never have appeared some situation like this one. Even on Tiger-QT7-FCP 5.
This is so odd. I can only think on recapturing checking all the presets pointing in DV/DVCPRO NTSC. Hope it works! (It ought to be)
    Best regards!

  • 16:9 Frame Size Setting

I'm working on a film installation with 2 x 4:3 sized Video Streams that will stream alongside each other in a 16:9 format presentation (leaving a thin black border top and bottom)
I want to finally export a HD Sequence (1920 x 1080, 29.97fps, Apple ProRes 422 Compressor, Square Pixel Aspect Ratio) onto HD for projection
but the Sequence Settings box only gives the following options:
    960 x 720 (16.9) --- but 960 divided by 720 = 1.3333 !
    1280 x 1080 (16.9) --- but 1280 divided by 1080 = 1.185 !
    1440 x 1080 (16.9) --- but 1440 divided by 1080 = 1.333 !
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Why do the given options listed above not equal 16:9 when i divide the length by the height ? (very confusing) even though 1280 X 1080 looks correct in the canvas
    2. What Frame Size and Pixel Aspect Ratio Should I be working in to get the final desired HD 16.9 export without compromising the quality by blowing my 720 x 480 size frames up to fit into the 16.9 canvas ?
thanks so much for your advise !

The problem you're likely seeing is due to the fact that you're trying to change the sequence settings of an HDV sequence or something like that. Instead of doing that, go into the browser and hit CMDOPTN to create a new sequence from sequence presets.
From the preset list choose prores 1080i.

  • Video with alpha channel causing frame size distortion

I have a lower-third which I built in AE. The content only occupies about 2/3 the width of the frame however I made sure I exported it at the full frame size as the rest of the video in my Premiere project. Also, I exported it as a quicktime movie with PNG settings to incl. the alpha channel.
When I import it into Premiere CS4, I drop it in on the Video 2 layer over Video 1 which is the main VT and in the preview, it all seems to be appearing as you'd expect. If I hit enter to start rendering, when it finishes I find that the lower third has been stretched the full width of the frame and additionally, Video 1 has been stretched too. I know there's an option in Preferences > General to default everything to the frame size of the sequence but having that tickbox on or off doesn't make any difference.
Does anyone have any ideas what's causing it?

Windows. Alas neither of those options worked. In the end, it was terribly convoluted but I had to export the footage from Premiere without a graphics, then import the video into After Effects and layer my comp over it - then export the final version from AE rather than Premiere. It seemed a very back-to-front way of doing things but if it works...

  • Frame size and compressor

I had captured a mini DV movie in another program as an .avi file. When I import this file as is into FCE, its properties show in the browser as:
    frame size 720 x 480
    compressor DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    data rate 3.6 MB/sec
I then used MPEG Streamclip to export this .avi file into a QuickTime file in 3 different ways. The methods, and resultant properties as they show in FCE, are as follows:
    Test 1:
    Compressor = Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    Frame size = 720 x 480
    Data rate = 3.6 MB/sec
    Test 2:
    Compressor = Apple Intermediate Codec
    Frame size = 720 x 480
    Data rate = 2.5 MB/sec
    Test 3:
    Compressor = Apple Intermediate Codec
    Frame size = 640 x 480
    Data rate = 2.3 MB/sec
    Observations and questions:
In the FCE canvas, Test 1 and Test 2 look pretty much identical. Test 3 looks very slightly horizontally stretched compared to the other tests. Or, as everything's relative, Test 1 and Test 2 look very slightly horizontally compressed compared to Test 3. By the way, I placed markers in each test clip at the exact same frame to get a good comparison. Then I jumped marker to marker while looking at the canvas.
QUESTION 1: Is FCE in fact handling these clips differently due to the different frame sizes?
When I play the clips in QuickTime Player (not pro), Test 1 and Test 2, which both have frame size 720 x 480, are horizontally stretched. Test 3, frame size 640 x 480, is normal. The differences between the stretched and the normal are much more pronounced than they appear in the FCE canvas. When I open the ORIGINAL .avi captured clip (720 x 480) in QT Player, it is normal, not stretched like Test 1 and Test 2 which have the same 720 x 480 size.
QUESTION 2: I know this isn't the QT forum, but is this normal behavior in QT Player?
When I open iDVD version 7.0.3 from iLife '09, the only one of the three test clips that appears in the media browser is Test 3.
QUESTION 3: Does anyone know why? I posted this in the iDVD forum; nobody replied.
I then put the three test clips on the timeline in FCE and exported the sequence as a QuickTime movie. When I play it in QT Player, it is (gulp) stretched; ALL of it, not just the Test 1 and Test 2 portions. The finished .mov file DOES appear in the iDVD media browser; when I preview it there, it is STRETCHED.
QUESTION 4: When I export .avi to QT files in MPEG Streamclip, what compressor should I choose for use in FCE?
QUESTION 5: When I export .avi to QT files in MPEG Streamclip, what frame size should I choose for use in FCE?
QUESTION 6: Why are FCE and QT Player handling the differences in frame size in different ways? FCE shows a very slight difference when viewed in the canvas, whereas QT Player shows a drastic stretching when playing the clips.
    Thanks for your help.

Apple Intermediate Codec is reserved to transcode HD content (from HDV or AVCHD). Don't use it for Stand def DV-NTSC nor PAL.
QUESTION 2: I know this isn't the QT forum, but is this normal behavior in QT Player?
There is a setting in quicktime player pro under movie properties (command-J) to select the correct aperture option. That's enable the correct aspect ratio when movie is opened with quicktime.

DVCPRO50-NTSC for standard definition and Apple Intermediate Codec (1080i60 or 50 or 720p) for HD.
QUESTION 5: When I export .avi to QT files in MPEG Streamclip, what frame size should I choose for use in FCE?
720X480 for SD, 1920X1080 or 1280X720 for HD

  • Is it possible to define the frame size when capture from MiniDV?

I am editing a series of tapes which I did not film and don't have the original camera. I am capturing it using my Canon ZR500. When I capture it the frame size is 720 by 480 (3:2). Is there any possibility that by using a different camera I could be inadvertently changing the frame size? (I can't see where I could but someone in this project thinks the aspect ration should be 4:3 - I can't see anywhere I could be changing it.)

I have just given this a quick browse but I think it just explains how to make slides match the frame size. I used keynote to make the slide - probably not the best but I don't have photoshop. But the principle should be the same?
But using an incorrect slide size shouldn't affect the aspect ratio of the final video should it?
After I create the .mov file from FCE I use MPEG Streamclip to produce an .mp4 version to upload to the internet. If I use Streamclip to view the stream info it still shows a frame size of 720 by 480.
    Am I missing something?

  • Frame size doesn't match

I'm working on an animated project...doing the animation in Flash and then doing various effects and editing in Premiere Pro CS3.  I've been rendering my scenes out of flash as PNG sequences, and then bringing them into Premiere...and so far it seems to be working well for picture quality and what not, but I just noticed something weird.  I'm rendering frames from Flash with 1280x720 resolution...and in Premiere I'm working with a project size of 1280x720, so it should be a perfect fit, right?  But it doesn't seem to be.  If I render an image sequence from Premiere, the dimensions are fine, but if I render a video file it stretches the picture out horizontally for some reason, and also crops the left and right edges.  I also noticed that in Premiere if I choose 'scale to fit frame size' in the timeline than the image shrinks a bit and leaves a very narrow letterbox at the top and bottom...this solves the cropping issue when I export but the image is still inexplicable stretched...not to mention that if the clip size has the exact same dimensions as the frame size, 'scale to fit frame size' really shouldn't do anything at all.
Anybody know what's going on here?  At the moment it doesn't have a big impact on my project but when I finish and want to render out watchable video it's gonna be a problem, so I might as well figure it out now before I go any further.
    thanks in advance

Ya, all my footage is the same size, I actually made a template file that I open and resave whenever I start a new scene so that all my settings would
be consistant...and my project settings match my export settings.  The monitor in Premiere shows it cropped as well, but it doesn't get stretched until I export it...and then like I said if I export a targa sequence or something it's not stretched or cropped.
I'm not sure what you mean by par, thought.

  • Can't make multiclip-- 'frame sizes don't match'

Hi, I am trying to create my first multiclip. I have selected three imported capture files, control-clicked to 'Create Multiclip', and a message comes up saying "Can't create multiclip. Video frame sizes don't match". It true that the three clips have 3 different dimensions (720X480 1440X1080 and 960X720). I'm not sure if these dimensions pertain to the 'video frame size', but I do know that Dianna Weynand's book says that clips of various 'formats' can be made into a multiclip.
Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks, Bob

Well, that is up to you, but my suspicion would be that you will not be happy with 720 x 480 DV (which I hope was shot 16:9 anamorphic) enlarged to 1080i, but it is your call.
If it were me, I would go the other way and make all the media match the smallest frame size, converting everything, including the DV footage to ProRes as the codec. But that is just one opinion, based on the idea that you are never going to improve the DV footage by scaling it larger, and you will do less quality damage to the image of the HD material by scaling it smaller. Of course, it will no longer be HD.
You might want to do some tests before you commit all your footage, and the wiseness of your choice will be dependent on what format you ultimately want to deliver your finished project in, and what purpose that format has.
    Hope this helps.

  • Customizing video frame size

I have to produce a video for a web site and the webmaster tells me my video must be 181x121 (height x width). If I simply resize or scale my finished video (which is 480x720), everything looks distorted.
Is there a way to crop the video frame size to exactly 181x121 ? I realize I will be throwing away some content, but that's okay.
    Thanks and regards,
    Warren

There is no way to do that in FCE without a third party compressor.
You can do it with a work-around using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. You them to create a multilayer image in the size you want. Import the image, which will come in as sequence. Place your edited video inside the sequence. It will probably scale to fit the screen. Scale it up and adjust the position to fit the frame the way you want it. Export it without rendering may save a recompression cycle.

  • Iphoto Books: How to Enable "fit photo to frame size" when theme grays it out by default

Don't know if this has been posted before or not, but I've been using the "Modern" Theme in iPhoto books and trying for the life of me to figure out how to get my photos to not crop while they're in a single-photo framed layout (I'm not using 4:3 photos; mine are 8.5" by 11"). Even fully zoomed out my photos cut off at the top and bottom. I knew about the "fit photo to frame size" option but the theme had it greyed out--except for on one page, in which it was already enabled. So I must have done it before without paying attention, but it took forever to figure out how to do it again.
    Here's how:
    1. Open up the page you want to modify. I'm assuming here that your photos are already placed, but if not, place the photo you want to use.
    2. Click the Layout tab.
    3. Change the layout to the single page full bleed option--no frame. Your photo should now be blown up across the page.
    4. Right click the photo. The "fit photo to frame size" option should now be available for you to check off. Go ahead and activate it.
    5. Change the layout back to the single photo framed option. Your photo will now fit inside the frame, although to truly see the whole thing you have to open up the Options tab and select the borderless option.
To save time in steps 1-3, and step 5, you can also change the layout of all your pages at once by clicking page 1 (not the cover, the next page), then opening the Layout tab, then selecting the layout you want. You still have select the "fit photo to frame size" individually for each photo.
Hope this is useful for people.

There is an option for the Initial View that is "Magnification:" "Fit Page".  And this works for the initial page when the PDF is opened and it does not matter what the page size it, Acrobat/Reader will automatically fill the screen with the page. If you want the zoom type to change with each page then you need  add a page open script to each page to set the pages zoom type to "zoomtype.fitP"
    this.zoomType = zoomtype.fitP;

  • Is it possible to set frame size for a new project ?

    Hi all,
i would like to create a video in which there will be 2 videos playing the same content from a different angle.
    Each video is 512 x 384 .
So i would like to set the frame size of the project as 1024 x 768 in order both videos to exist.
I searched around for tutorials regarding this but i didn't find anything similar. It seems as if i cannot set the frame size of the project from the start.
So,is there a way to do this?
Thank you for your time reading this.

Hi and thank you for your answers.
    @->shoternz
It will be displayed in my monitor and probably on you tube.Btw your remark on size was very accurate.Didn't think of that.
Although i could use a little bigger height to use it to display a logo or something....
I am very premiere newbie as you can understand.
