Framemaker 12 freezes

FrameMaker 12.0.3.424 unstructured running on Win 64 as part of techsuite 5 is causing me a lot of problems. I am runnig on a brand new machine with 32 gb of ram but it still seems FrameMaker runs very slowly when creating pdf's. Lately it has started behaving weird too. When printing to pdf it does produce a pdf, but the print window showing progress does not shut down making it seem that the printing process is still ongoing. Some files which it printed like a breeze a month ago, now takes for bloody ever.
It seems to me that some sort of change has happend to the elements which goes into printing. Maybe there has been an ufortunate update to Distiller. Maybe MS has made an ufortunate update to windows print engine. I don't know, but something has changed I can't figure out why, but it certainly seems to affect printing to pdf in FrameMaker 12.
Does anybody share my experience?

The system TEMP location is specified in your Windows environment. You can't really adjust the size of the folder, only where it is located. If it's on the same drive as everything else, then it still has up to 22Gb to play with.
If you're using the Print function, are you making any selections in the "PDF Setup" beside the Generate Acrobat Data... option? Which joboptions file is specified?
Is it just the one book that misbehaves or any book?
Try printing to a postscript file first and then manually running Distiller on the output. If the printing to the .ps file still hangs or takes a long time, then there might be an issue in one of the FM files of the book or possibly with the printer instance (try creating/printing PDFs from other apps to verify).

  • FrameMaker freezes when selecting text on Windows Vista

FrameMaker freezes on Windows Vista (forcing me to kill the process). The problem occurs both on FrameMaker 7.1 and FrameMaker 8. It seems to occur when I'm selecting text though I can't seem to create a scenario that reliably duplicates the problem. I'm running on a Fujitsu lifebook with 4 GB of memory.
I saw an earlier post in the archive but there didn't seem to be a resolution. Has anyone been able to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Eric, did you ever find a fix for this? The same thing happens to me running FM v8 on Windows 7. Did installing all updates solve your problem?

  • FrameMaker 10 - Topics that contain xrefs are causing the program to freeze

When I try to open a topic that contains a xref element with a valid href attribute, the program freezes for more than 5 minutes. This has caused significant problems with using this editor as our topics contain an extensive amount of xrefs.
Does anyone have any idea on why this is happening or is there a fix I need to install to correct this issue?

    Hi Ian,
It's probably hanging because there is no call to Printer.EndDoc after you call Printer.Paintpicture. See this KB for more information.

  • FrameMaker 11 trial version crashing on save and cross-reference insertion

    Hi everyone,
I've recently started a new position. My prior background was heavily DITA, and I'd describe my FrameMaker experience as late beginner or early intermediate. The new position uses FM exclusively though, so I've been on a steep learning curve lately.
I'm using the trial version of FrameMaker 11, downloaded about two weeks ago, until the PO for my full FM 11 license is processed. I'm working in book and document files that have been upgraded, I believe, from FM 9 to FM 10 and then from FM 10 to FM 11. All of my colleagues are still using FM 10, with a mind to upgrade to FM 11 in the spring as our new budget comes through (I am, so to speak, the FM 11 guinea pig for the group).
My workstation is a brand new HP Elitebook laptop running Windows 7 64-bit (I believe our IT department downgraded it from Windows 8). Windows is fully up-to-date. My trial version of FM 11 is 11.0.1.382 and also up-to-date as of this message.
My issue: FM 11 randomly crashes several times a week, sometimes once a day or so, sometimes when I try any of the following:
Saving all files in a book (using Shift + the File menu command)
Saving individual document files (generally using the Save icon in the tool bar)
Attempting to insert a cross-reference (placing the insertion point within the document, then opening the Cross-Reference tool in the right-hand side bar)
The crash takes the appearance of FM freezing for several seconds, then the dreaded message window opening with the words "FrameMaker has detected a serious error and must quit", with columns of error codes below.
I've googled and binged and not found anything for this issue in FM 11, so I thought I'd post here. I have tried the following, based on somewhat similar discussions I've seen for crashes in earlier versions of FM)
    Mif-washing the files
Working in the Structured FrameMaker interface instead of the Unstructured
Neither of these has worked. FM 11 trial continues to crash. It doesn't happen often; I'd say that I'm able to successfully able to perform the above tasks 20 times or so, with the crash on the 21st. But on a busy day, that's a few crashes a day.
To mitigate damage, I have autosave set to every two minutes and gotten in the habit of only having one or two documents open, instead of all in a book, to minimize the number of recovery files I need to process.
After one of the initial crashes, I did as Adobe asked and forwarded the crash report to them for troubleshooting.
My colleagues are watching all this very closely, and my troubles might influence our decision to upgrade from FM 10 to FM 11. So any insight into this issue would be appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Eric

    Eric,
The multitude of unesolved x-refs may due to the font issues when updating the book. During an update, if the files aren't open, FM tries to open them in the background but if it encounters an error like a missing font, it skips the file and then any x-refs to that file are unresolved. This can cascade to make things look really worse than they are.
What is your default printer when you start FM? It should be the Adobe PDF prnter instance. If not, then you might want to insatll the Sundorne SetPrint utility (http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm) thta will automatically set this for your FM sessions only.
One other place where fonts can hide is in table definitions. The catalog stores the font information (and not just the explicit paratag) of the cells in the header and first row. As Jeff mentions, you need to check the MIF file in detail. An excellent tool for quickly browsing your MIF is Graham Wideman's Mifbrowse (http://www.wideman-one.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm).

  • FrameMaker 5.5, imported graphics couldn´t be saved after editing

    Hey togehther,
i have a problem with FrameMaker 5.5 on a Windows XP Workstation with Spervice Pack 2:
In case of editing an imported graphic in a FrameMaker documnet (e.g. an AutoCAD drawing) and saving the document after editing the drawing, FrameMaker crashes/freezes.
After reopening the document the drawing/graphic is not changed.
What cause can be present here?

    Hi Okeller,
You may have placed an OLE link into the FM document by just copying and then pasting into FM. Hence Your double click can open the original application to edit the graphic. Avoid OLE like hell!
But you hear MMH: FM 5.5 is now 12 years old and XP is 5 years younger ...
    Try the following:
    - Double click on your graphic to open the app in which you edit it
    - In this application create a graphic from the file, something that FM can handle: eps with preview or as the last a pixel image (tiff) and save this to the project directory
    - in FM remove the graphic from the anchored frame and import the new graphic file by reference (not copy) and adapt size etc.

  • FrameMaker 10.0.1.402 and Windows 7 64bit

    Hi there,
basiclly FrameMaker runs fine on my Window 7 but a have one problem with a bigger file (well, its not that big, but the biggest a have right now). It has about 60 pages several graphics and internal and external cross-references, its an xml file with 111 KB.
When I open the file in framemaker, framemaker always freeze for 1 minute and in the titlebar I see that there is "no response". But FrameMaker always manage it to open the file, but I wonder why it has so much problems with it.
My processor and ram are not that busy (Dual core and 4 GB RAM) and I just got a new and fast hard drive.
    Thanks for tips.
    Greetings.

Ok, I just use XML files. Is it also relevant for xml files?
No it isn't. Opening an XML document uses the assigned template and creates brand new FrameMaker files, even cleaner than from a MIF file – supposed your template is clean. You may want to take the advice and MIF-wash your template document, just to be sure.
[User report: Creating a PDF from a 1200+ pages structured manual may take up to half an hour. After round-tripping to XML and return the process is considerably faster. Unfortunately the savings do not exceed the round-tripping time.]

  • RoboHelp 8 Freezes When Trying to Use Any Open Dialog

The title pretty well says it all. RoboHelp freezes when I try to use Open... from the Starter screen or File>Open or any other control that accesses the open dialog (i.e., the open/explore button on the Content Settings tab in the FrameMaker Document Settings dialog). I have to end the process in the Task Manager and restart RoboHelp. (Fortunately, the Recent Projects links work – except for Open..., of course.)
I discovered this when I had to restore links to moved FrameMaker documents. My installation is TCS2 running on Windows 7 32-bit; all updates to all TCS2 components and Windows 7 have been installed.
I tried an in-place reinstall of RoboHelp, but that didn't make any difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    John

Hi John and welcome to the RH community.
I'd check that you have both of the 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 updates installed. Also ensure your RH source files are not located on a network drive. Bare in mind that whilst some users manage to run RH under Windows 7, others have reported problems. You should also note that Windows 7 is not an officially supported platform for RH usage.

  • FrameMaker 11 crashes when opening lower version files

    Hi,
As I mentioned in the topic, upon opening some files from version 9, FM11 shows "internal error" and crashes. That happens repeatedly when opening certain file. Is there any solution to this?
    best regards
    Kuba

There is a bug in printing in FM11, got to use patch - so yes, it's a little bit like blaming the kitchen this time   Other that this, FM is outstanding tool We got Adobe FrameMaker 11 in office fresh this week, and since the start of the using it crashed at opening and printing. We worked previously on FM7, FM8, FM9, FM10 and encountered no errors with that software (although FM9 liked to freeze when switching between Paragraph designer and Character Designer), so it's quite understandable why we are so unhappy with the FM11.
Gotta try on MIF on monday, I think it will solve the problem.
Where can i find this printing patch?
    best regards

  • FrameMaker 7 vs Windows 7 and Windows Vista

We have several computers with either Windows 7 or Windows Vista. On these we have Frame version 7 (latest patch). I have heard that Frame 7 is not compatible with these 2 operating systems. Is that true?
We all have the same problem:
If we, with our mice, try to mark text in a flow or cells in a table, and have the left button pressed too long (more than a couple of seconds), FM freezes. The only way to get out of this is to crash it and loose everything since the last save.
Will this problem go away if we upgrade to version 9? Has anybody else experienced the same, upgraded and now FM behaves properly?
    Lena, Sweden

    Lena,
we are currently running FrameMaker 7.2 on Windows 7, and we too are experiencing 'Not Responing' hanging issues that we have to then end FrameMaker and lose the unsaved information.
I initially thought it was network related but eliminated this when i looked at files on a local hard disk.
I can now produce the error by selecting a large section of a framemaker document and trying to copy it (we have a lot of referenced illustrations which are EPS files stored on the network and these seem to assist in causing the program to hang.)
I found reference on a site about the Desktop Windows Manager, and decided to do a test. I have forced my computer in to a Hang situation and then looked at ending the dwm.exe process in task manager. As soon as i do this, the screen flashes, and i now have a responding framemaker program. I have done it a few times and it seems to correct it each time.
DWM is linked into the Aero interface. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_Window_Manager, so it looks like the way to get framemaker 7 working is to turn off/disable the DWM service,
Under  Control Panel ->  System and Security ->  Administrative Tools ->   Services ->  Desktop Window Manager Session Manager  ->  Disabled
I would recommend testing this by causing Framemaker to stop responding and then use Task Manager to end DWM.exe. If this works the long term solution would be to disable the DWM  Service. I am going to do this and see how i get on.
Hope this information is of some use.

  • Find Fonts causes freezing/crash in CS6

Running ID CS6 on a Windows XP, SP3 system. I have several IDML files (FrameMaker conversions) that I am editing. So far, no issues, but now, InDesign will freeze when I try to globally update the fonts (mostly body fonts). I'm moving from Times in the original to Times New Roman in my edits - nothing out of the ordinary.
Is this an issue that others have reported, or a case of a corrupt file?

Yes, occuring when I try to update any font that appears in many places throughout the document. After some testing, I'm beginning to think the original FrameMaker file is corrupting when I export - of my 30 chapters, this is the only one it's happening to. I appreciate your help!

  • Does Framemaker v 7.1 works fine with Windows 2007?

    Hi,
My company is upgrading the systems to Windows 2007.  I am using Framemaker v 7.1 for creating documentation. Will it have any impact? Do I need to upgrade to the latest version of frame.
    Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Latha

I use Windows 7 and FM 7 and everything works perfectly, except it freezes when I try to select text or table cells "too long". See my question "Frame Maker 7 vs Windows 7 and Windows Vista" (or something like that) written a couple of days ago. I generate pdf:s to the Adobe pdf printer (acrobat professional 9) and it works great.

  • Framemaker 7.2 crashing - size limit?

I'm using FrameMaker 7.2. I've got a project with 22 files - about 8.2 MB. When I try something simple (yet VERY important) like resolving xrefs throughout the files, FM crashes after a few minutes.
    1) Is there a size limit beyond which FM will not work?
    2) Is there a number-of-files limit beyond which FM will not work?
I fear that if I split up the project (perhaps putting the appendicies in a separate "book"?), the xrefs will not be resolved completely.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    Thanks,
    Deb

It's difficult to determine. (BTW, my sysadm guy did "watch" the system during an attempt and said that there is plenty of everything (memory, CPU, etc.) for this to work.
It actually does happen during xref updates. FM begins to resolve the xrefs and then freezes and sits there for a while before crashing. Sometimes it will open a file (so that I can guess where it's getting stuck) and sometimes it won't. The funny thing is that I'm using conditional text and I build smaller docs (for business users) without a problem. Only when I include the extra files for the larger docs (for technical users) that it can't handle the load (or so it seems). I've even tried rebooting and closing Outlook/Skype/etc. (processes that I don't need) to give FM the system's full attention!
I actually only open one file in the book and then try to Update References from there. I'll try to open all the files and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the idea and I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks VERY much for your reply and for changing my mind about these forums being big black holes into which questions fall with no hope of a reply!

  • Install of 8.6 or 9.0 freezes

Tried searching for a bit, but I didn't see anything in this forum that helped. If I missed something, I apologize--please point me in the right direction!
Got out the old beige G3 to play around with the other day. I decided I wanted to attempt to install OSX on it since I've got a zif 1Ghz upgrade sitting around and some extra hard drives.
My tale begins with a fairly stock G3. The original (I'm guessing) 6GB hard drive is an Apple OEM drive, but it has passed on. It had OS 9 on it and was running fine. Since the drive died, I decided to start with a new hard drive and 8.6 since the tower (by the way, it's a Rev. A) came with 8, right? I figured, perhaps wrongly, that the best path to OSX would be by running all the proper updates through OS 9. Sounds like 10.2 is fairly stable for the G3 tower without lots of tweaking, so that's what I was shooting for.
Well, here's what I did to prepare the drive and computer:
    Pull extra RAM
Pull personality card (only card installed)
    Replace PRAM battery
Set drive and CD-ROM to master
Boot to open firmware (set-defaults, reset-all)
    Reset with p-r-opt-cmd dance
Then I booted to the 8.6 install disk. I ran disk setup and initialized the 80GB ATA drive (WD Caviar) with two partitions (7GB and 73GB roughly) since I was planning on working my way up to OSX and have read about the 8GB partition limitation. Just in case I installed the drivers for the disk with drive setup after I initialized it.
Restart, boot to 8.6 install disk. Run the installer, selecting the ~7GB partition. It freezes with four minutes left. That's not good!
I had three RAM modules, so I started from scratch and ran the whole procedure from top to bottom with each module. Same thing.
Tried the OS 9 install disk. At this point, I was a little frustrated. Maybe my install disk was messed up. Nope. OS 9 install freezes with seven minutes left every time.
Is it possible that all three RAM modules are corrupt? This computer has been sitting for quite some time. The PRAM battery was toast, hence the replacement. Oh, and by the way, the only things hooked up are the CD-ROM and hard drive. No ZIP or floppy attached during the installation attempts.
Am I missing something super obvious?
Thanks for taking the time to read this poor tale. I look forward to being enlightened.

Jon - My goal now is to get this machine back to where it was in the not so distant past. I'd prefer not to start pouring money into it if I'm not sure that it will work. I'll keep that in mind if I do find a solution to my problem, or if I can fairly definitively narrow my problem down to the motherboard.
BDAqua - Thanks. I knew the reset-nvram didn't work on this firmware, and I--probably mistakenly--assumed that doing the p-r-opt-cmd dance took care of that reset. I'll try that in about an hour.
While I'm sitting around, I decided to test one more variable--the CD-ROM drive. Booted to the OS9 disk and initialized my 80GB disk. Then I used Disk Copy to copy the CD to a later partition. I'll install 8.6 until it freezes. Believe it or not, it'll show the flashing disk with question mark, and eventually boot 8.6. This is not so with OS9. If I let that install until it freezes, it won't boot at all. So I'll try to boot up 8.6 with another hard drive attached, and attempt to run the OS9 installer to install on the other hard drive. At this point I'm grasping at straws. I'm not even sure the installer will run if it's not on a CD.
So I'll try the reset after this (probably fails).
    thanks!

  • MSI VN220GT MD1G|GeForce 220 GT - causing lock ups/screen freezes

Hi, I've been searching everywhere for my problem, and the things I find usually are left unanswered :(
I recently upgraded my old graphics card (GeForce 7300 GT) to the GeForce 220 GT, at that time I was using Windows XP SP3. Everything went fine then, I downloaded the newest driver from nVidia (195.62) and restarted, everything went smoothly.
It was then my computer started to freeze, to the point where I can't do anything (mouse/keyboard unresponsive). I am forced to force reboot. This freezing usually happens randomly when there's nothing to provoke the problem.
So I decided to upgrade to the new Windows 7. I did everything it told me to and everything went very well. But the problem still occurs, but more often, and around 30 minutes after logging in. I got the Windows 7 32 bit version of the new nVidia driver (195.62) and installed it. Did nothing. I have also tried to update windows which also did nothing.
These forum threads ask the same question I am now asking:

I did some more research on the net and it seems this PSU is labelled under many different names. I found a Portuguese site that did the test for this unit and then used the google translator tool.
    refer to http://www.clubedohardware.com.br/artigos/1818/1
    Some translated extracts:
The Coletek is a national brand aimed at the OEM market, or its source is aimed at companies that assemble PCs They have a separate brand for products geared to the retail market, the C3Tech. Today we test the model LC-8460BTX S (which, despite its name, is an ATX and not a BTX) that is sold as a source of 450 W. Really?.....
....Speaking of curiosity, in Figure 7 you can see the marking of the type of fuse in the circuit board of the source. All sources bring this information. But the curious thing here is that the marking indicates that for a source from 150 to 200 W a 5 A fuse should be used and to a source from 230 to 300 W from a 6.3 A fuse should be used. As this power supply uses a fuse of 6.3 A, we have a source between 230 and 300 W, according to their own existing markup on the printed circuit board thereof. As the manufacturer can turn that into 450 W on the label of the source is a magic that Mr. M can not explain.....
....The Coletek LC-S 8460BTX burned when trying to draw about 225 W (which would be our test number seven). So the most you can pull it was about 190 W (which would be our test of 200 W). More information and video on the next page.
So I recommend that you perhaps translate the whole article to get the full results. In your case, I believe the PSU should be the first place where you should try something a bit more realistic before you do anything else.

For a system with a 220 installed PSU with +12V~30A minimum is recommended. My recommendation is to get nothing less than a quality PSU such as a Corsair VX450W +12V~33A. That junk PSU is typical of the worthless ones that are often provided by case manufacturers and examples of similar units that can be purchased for as little as $10 (USD) on eBay.
Thank-you so much guys, you've most likely have just diagnosed and gave me a solution for my problem
At first I never knew all PSU's were different, and that my new graphics card could handle whatever I had in my system at the moment.
I don't think I will bother checking my PSU if my current PSU is a Okia or a Xion, I may as well upgrade the thing anyway
Just some things I need cleared up though:
Firstly, is it the Corsair VX450W that I would want to buy and install to run my card? Is it affordable?
And secondly, are PSU's hard to install/upgrade? Where can I find a guide/tutorial for this kind of thing?
