FrameMaker 12 toolbar tomfoolery

Hi all,
I have an issue in both structured and unstructured Fm11 and 12.
While they've been working quite well on my vmware Fusion 6 vm, in the last week I've noticed a corruption in the menubar and the toolbar.
Here's examples of what I see
Has anyone else encountered/fixed this issue?

Update: I was able to create another Windows account, which doesn't have the toolbar problem.
Apparently there's a resource or app I installed that caused the issue in that Win profile.
Have you tried setting up another user account within windows for testing?
I'm a bit annoyed with myself, actually, as I should have immediately thought to do this when I saw the issue!)

  • My graphics toolbar has disappeared (FrameMaker 11 on Windows 7).

My graphics toolbar has disappeared (FrameMaker 11 on Windows 7).
In View > Toolbars, the Graphics Toolbar item is checked.
Clicking Graphics > Tools does nothing whatsoever.
HELP!  I need to get the graphics toolbar back.

Matt, Thanks for responding.  I finally found the graphics toolbar. It was docked--and hidden--in the row at the top with all the other shortcut icons. It was so far on the right that it was out of sight. It was revealed only after I (accidentally) stretched the FrameMaker window way out to the right and into my second monitor.  I apparently docked the toolbar there without realizing I'd done it.

  • FrameMaker 10 missing toolbars in Windows 7

I use Parallels on a MacBook Pro to run Windows. Yesterday I finally got around to installing Windows 7 (patched up to date) and then Frame 10 (with update) on it, but there appears to be one problem so far: Three of the four toolbars offered by Frame 10 in WIndows XP are missing in Windows 7.  Win XP has quick access, paragraph, text, and graphics; while in Windows 7 the only one offered is quick access.  Menus are set to "complete".  The one I care about is the graphics toolbar.
Anyone else see this or know of a fix? Thanks.

Your screenshot shows the Window menu, which is supposed to show the visible stuff only. To activate a toolbar you would go to the View menu or in this case the Graphics menu.
On my XP from first install, the Windows > Toolbars menu has shown all four and they are always persistent. Each toolbar name is a toggle: Select an item and the corresponding toolbar appears (and a check mark appears next to the name); select it again, and the toolbar disappears, but the menu item remains, sans check mark. Windows 7 is now behaving the same, once I enabled them via keyboard shortcut. And I just tested that if I turn off a toolbar using View > Toolbars, its name still appears, without a check mark, in Windows > Toolbars. I bet I have selected View > Toolbars maybe twice, ever, and I use Frame every day. I swear!

  • Missing toolbar closebox in FrameMaker 9?

Is going to the View > Toolbars menu the only way to close a toolbox? Seems like there should be a close box 'X' on the toolbar, but I can't find it.

    Jay,
I see the same thing: In some orientations there is no close box. I seem to remember that docking and undocking brings it back, but this is awkward...
What I do: Create workspaces with and without the graphics toolbar and then switch those.

  • Enable Commenting Toolbar in Browser (doesn't work for IE / FF)

I've seen a lot of chatter about this scenario but nothing seems to be working for me. What I want to do is this:
    Create a .pdf.
Attach to the enterprise wiki software Confluence.
    Check-out in Confluence.
Have the Commenting / Annotation toolbar available in IE / Firefox.
    Make changes.
    Save the .pdf.
    Check back into Confluence.
This isn't working for me. What I've been doing is this.
Create a .pdf in FrameMaker 10.
    Open in Acrobat 9 Pro.
Navigate to Advanced > Document Processing > Document Javascripts
Create a Script (I called mine 'Commenting').
    Click Add....
    Used this JavaScript:
    function Commenting()
    {Collab.showAnnotToolsWhenNoCollab = true;
    Click OK.
    Click Close.
    Save.
Click Comments > Enable for Commenting and Analysis in Acrobat Reader.
    Save.
    Attach the .pdf to Confluence.
When I Checkout the file from Confluence in IE 8, the document appears but toolbar doesn't appear. When I Checkout the file in Firefox, the document doesn't appear at all.
I'd really appreciate a clear response on how to get this work. While I'd prefer to use the Acrobat Commenting from within Acrobat Pro for peer document review, I've been asked to research using Confluence as the primary nexus for peer review. I'm not having any luck thus far.

Clicking the link to the .PDF launches the file in a browser (same gimped toolbar for both IE 8 and Firefox). When I right-click the .PDF toolbar in-browser, I have access to the following toolbars:
    File
    Find
    Page Display
    Page Navigation
    Select and Zoom
    Tasks
I don't see anything for Commenting / Annotation.

  • Colored icons in toolbars

    Hello all,
In FrameMaker 9, the user interface has been completely overhauled to look like all of the other Adobe products. One detail in this overhaul was the colors of the toolbar icons. By default, compying to PhotoShop and other products, the icons are grey and show color only when you hover over them. For a product where colors are in the content, this is probably a good choice, but in FrameMaker most content is black and white, and having colored icons in the toolbars does help authors to quickly find the required function for what they want to do.
It turns out to be quite simple to change FrameMaker's usage of icons by changing configuration files, telling Frame to use the colored hover icon as the default one and the grey default icon as the hover version. I have created a script that does this for FrameMaker versions 10 and 11 (in fact, the script will also work for version 12). The script can be executed via the File > Script > Run command and does not require any knowledge of ExtendScript.
Running the script toggles between grey and colored icons in the personal user settings, so every user can have their own settings.
If you are interested in receiving this script (free of charge), send an e-mail to jang at jang dot nl.
    Kind regards from Amsterdam

  • FrameMaker 9 - Docking Difficulties

    Greetings,
We were running a bit of orientation on our newly-purchased  FrameMaker 9 this morning and found that one of our computers couldn't dock items on the right.
We did the following, pretty much in this order:
Opened a book file and promptly docked that stack (?) on the left edge of the workspace.
Opened the Graphics toolbar and then the Paragraph and Character catalogs and docked them (click+drag until you see the blue line, let go) into a pod (?)
Docked the new pod on the right edge of the workspace.
Then we opened one of the files in the book and docked it at the top where it filled the area.
As we went through the orientation I found myself unable to dock anything on the right edge of the workspace. I could dock the book (or pretty much anything else) on the left.
I noticed that if I docked the document, then it filled everything and I couldn't dock the pods on the right, so I undocked the document and tried docking the previously created pod (?) on the right, but they wouldn't. We tried openign up toolbars and the like and none of them would dock.
I wasn't present for the beginning of the class and so didn't go through exactly the same steps as the others. As the keyboarder in our clan I figure I must have typed a forbidden key combination and changed a setting or something, but between the lot of us (self-taught instructor included), we were unable to solve this.
The help tells how to dock things, somewhat, but not about any settings that may affect it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Solon
PS - I LOVE the new scrolling capability. I lament the loss of my cherished Alt+W, then type the number of the document to navigate between them. WHY must I go through Ctrl+Tab,Tab,Tab??  eh.. not much different from cycling through sections of a Windows GUI  :-)

    Solon,
You might want to have a look through the videos on the new interface for some more clues:

  • Change color on toolbar underline

I have found the fmtoolbar.ini file and I want to
change the color of the underline and font to red when the toolbar button is clicked on. Is there any way to do this?? Thanks in advance for all your help.

    [email protected] wrote:
Van, I was thinking that I could change the toolbar button to do the same thing as the Character Designer. Every once in  awhile that toolbar button gets used, not very often, but it can mess us up when all the formatting is removed and new formatting is imported. The reason the formatting is changed is the font size is larger for the Legislature to review the documents. We go from a 10pt font to a 12pt font so they can read it easier. We charge the agencies who submit dockets to us by the page so the font is smaller than what the Legislature reviews. They don't pay for anything we send to them.  For some reason the underline from the toolbar button is lost and never to be seen again when the formatting is removed and reapplied from a different template. If that won't work that is the way it is. I didn't know if it could be done or not. It sounds like it might be easier to disable the toolbar button and not worry about it. Thanks for your help.

It sounds as if you want to avoid misuse of the underline formatting button, and perhaps some others.
The FrameMaker customization manual here: http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/framemaker/ describes how to make changes to menus and toolbars. It's possible to remove items from menus and toolbars. Would that work for you?

  • Hide composite documents in Framemaker 9

I'd like to be able to control the display of composite documents in Framemaker 9 the same as other documents, as I did in earlier versions.
That is, when the focus is on a .fm document, it occupies the whole interface and the book file is hidden.
I can collapse the book file to an icon, but the icon is always on top. It's annoying and distracting.
    Any suggestions?
    Allan

    Allen,
Check out the features of those buttons in the toolbar, which control the UI visibility and window arrangement:
The left-most button toggles the behaviour you want, I guess.

  • New to FrameMaker ~ How to define elements?

I'm new to FrameMaker and was hoping somebody could help me. I've just uploaded a huge document from Microsoft Word into FrameMaker and I'm having issues with elements. Does anybody know how to define an element for the entire document? When I go into "element validation" on the side toolbar, I keep getting notices that my entire document is undefined.
Hope this made sense! Thanks in advance!

Hi Jen, Russ's advice is sound, but do you know that you *need* structured FM?
If so, then that structured model should be known by your org and you should have a structured template (an existing FM doc with structured content will do...)
You then need to create the conversion table (you've done that) and start assigning to the structure model you were given in the structured template.
If you don't have any structured content or a structured template, you're probably working harder than you have to.
If you do have those things, then you'll need to understand your structure model (either the EDD or element definition document or the DTD, the Document Type Definition). That will be critical to understanding what the conversion document is supposed to do.
Finally...if this is the only document you have to convert, you may find that you're working really hard to do something you are not likely to do again. You might want to consider contracting out, as it may save you money, and will definitely save you time.

  • Missing toolbars in PDFs when using old (5.0) Reader

One of our clients is still on Reader 5.0 and we are unable to convince him to upgrade. Our PDFs are produced from FrameMaker 7.2 and although they look beautiful in Reader 7.0 and 8.0, our client can't see a toolbar in his version of Reader. F8 doesn't work.
Although thumbnails appear and offer a print option, our client's focus is to save local copies of various PDFs he opens from our web site.
Does anyone know a workaround? Due to the client's reluctance to upgrade a stable product like Reader, obviously plugins or add-ons would not be a feasible solution.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

If your client wants local copies, he can right-click on the link
offering the pdf. It will give him the option of saving to his computer.

  • FM 12 - Quick Element Toolbar

I'm giving the trial version of FM 12 a quick test. One thing I noticed right away is that I can't seem to actually open the new Quick Element toolbar. Selecting View > Toolbars > Quick Element Toolbar does nothing except place a (second) Help button in the toolbar. Checking the quick_element.xml config file for the workspace suggests that I should be seeing a handful of buttons for adding standard elements to the open file. Is there another setting that I'm missing?
I'm just using the default DITA template for FM 12. Nothing special there.
    Thanks for any help.
         --Steve

The Quick Element Toolbar seems to be hardcoded to show (all items) only when the structured application is set to only these three DITA structured apps:
    DITA_1.2_topic
    DITA_1.2_task
    DITA_1.2_concept
For all other structured aplications, it is set to only to the Help.
    See the quick_element.xml file in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\12\WorkSpaces\Structured\WYSIWYGView \toolbars

  • Missing tools bars for structured authoring in Framemaker 11

I am watching a couple of videos for converting a Framemaker document to DITA.  I notice that in the videos there are several new toolbars available:
    Element
    StructureTools
    DITA
    S1000D
I am not seeing any of these toolbars when I open Framemaker 11.  Any idea what's going on.
    Thanks
    Liz

Definitely not stupid. It's a common question.
I wish Adobe would eliminate the switch from structured to unstructured. It just causes confusion. You can work on unstructured files perfectly well with the structured interface. Just switch to structured mode and leave it there .. no need to switch back and forth.
If anything, Adobe should add the ability to easily customize the menus that are available so you can turn off menus that you don't use. This would have the same effect as the interface switching, but seems more sensible to me.

  • In V.31.3 write window, there is no "insert" option in the toolbar and ctrl-l doesnt work. I can't find any way to insert a link.

    <blockquote>
I think it's composing in plain text. Hold down shift when clicking Write, Reply or Forward. Plain text doesn't support insertions so they aren't offered in the toolbar or menu when plain text is in use.
It's supposed to open replies and forwards in the appropriate text mode, consistent with the original message. The default for Write for new messages is set in the account settings. However it's also possible to set defaults for individual Contacts, and also for specific domains, so IMHO, it's all too easy for a contradiction or inconsistency to arise at which point the behaviour might be unpredictable.
And I think it's buggy. I occasionally write to a newsgroup where HTML is frowned upon, so TB is set to compose in plain text yet almost always selects HTML. Go figure.
You can just paste links into the text. It doesn't need all the Insert|Link tomfoolery.
    </blockquote>
    Thank you!
Although I've used it a while and generally like it, I've never really used TB except in a pretty basic manner for correspondence.
I guess I need to learn more about this sort of thing, including how to compose links separately. I appreciate your help.

  • From FrameMaker Product Management

We do look at the forum posts from time to time. More so during product planning phases. The inputs received on the forums is a valuable source of information for us.
We also try to have direct communication with experienced FrameMaker users. We are currently in the planning phase for the future versions of FrameMaker. We would really appreciate if FrameMaker users can take out some time to share their ideas and wishlist with us.
We would prefer to receive a prioritised list of 5 to 10 features (not more than 10). And also a short description for each feature. Based on your requests we might want to schedule a call and discuss your ideas. Some information about yourself and your organisation would help us see your requests in the correct perspective. You can post your list of prioritised features on this forum, or send it to me directly ([email protected]). I understand that many of you have posted multiple requests in the past. It would be helpful if you resend your prioritised wishlist.

b Fix the ever-lovin' memory leak!
It's getting beyond tiresome to have to restart the program four or five times a day because "FrameMaker has experienced a serious problem and must quit"!!!!! There must be two hundred .recover. files hiding on my hard drives.
Move the spellcheck dialog out of the way (or, better, shift the text window) so we can see the suspected misspelling in context. Hiding the highlighted string with the dialog (even another one unconnected to the spellchecking task) is torture.
Some keyboard-driven means of getting into and out of the dialogs\toolbars. When using, e.g., the Paragraph Designer, it would be much easier to Shift+Tab back to the main doc window. Ctrl+M is great for getting _into_ it, but it's a mouse-driven world to get out. Being able to move among various toolbar/dialogs without going to the mouse would be very useful.
Drop Caps at the beginning of a 'graf. The current anchored frame method is tedious, and it just doesn't work very well for the material I deal with.
I have copied a few of Tim Murray's list here because I really like them, in addition to my own footnote and anchored frame requests (q.v. supra). I've flagged his suggestions: "¶", my comments have no flag.
¶ Allow forced-justify of the last line of a paragraph.
I've torn out so much hair trying to work around this (never successfully, btw)!
¶ Don't consider the space at the end of a line as a character when determining positioning.
This has always been a puzzle. I leave non-mandatory space at the end of each 'graf in case I want to add more text later or join two 'grafs. This "feature" often drives a new blank, line between 'grafs. Odd.
¶ If you type Alt+0039, you should get a straight single quote and 0034 should give you the straight double quote.
    b Feet'n'inches, minutes'n'seconds are all straight quotes.
So it's "turn off smart quotes, enter character(s), turn smart quote back on" or the esc sequences. Dumb smart quotes would be very nice. It would even be nice if Ctl+z reversed the smartness, as it does in MS Word. I could handle two keystrokes for the job, but as it is, we waste a lot of time keeping things straight (so to speak).
¶ Wider fields and dialogs. The good news: A fellow named Klaus Daube has created a modified fmdlg.dll for Windows that has nice wide fields for the Resize Selected Column dialog box. You can download it at http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker20.html.
    Thanks, Tim, this is great!!
Adobe should include this directly in the application. Does it also work (I'm not able to try it right now) for the next issue you raise:
¶ Show us the path. Some dialogs that show paths to files chop the path down to next to nothing. Show us the whole path, start to finish, and let it wrap when needed.
Oh, yeah!!! That's really old technology.
b The same thing goes for cross references.
It's often difficult to tell which of similar strings I am trying to catch when all I can see is forty characters.
¶ More keyboard support in dialog box lists; Shift+ and Ctrl+click. In the "Set Up Table of Contents" for example, pressing a letter should jump you to an item in the list. Some dialogs do, some to not. Further, you can't Shift+click or Ctrl+click either, and the up/down arrow keys don't work.
I, too, am a rodentophobe. Being left-handed may be a part of it, but having to use the mouse to do anything more complex than bringing up a designer just wastes too much time and effort. Keyboard short cuts (preferably that do not involve seven key strokes) are the best way to go.
¶ Do dialog tabs differently. Guess what you can't do? You can't change tabs by pressing Ctrl+Tab!
Once more, the mouse is vermin, and should be avoided any time possible.
    ¶ Quick outline view.
Again, this would make life so much easier.
