Framemaker 8 and Distiller 8.1.4 creating PDF
Hi
I use FrameMaker 8. I save it as Frame 7.0 document type. When I create PDF, I get error and cannot successfully convert to pdf.
My friend told me to uninstall Acrobat Professional, Framemaker 8 and then reinstall frammaker8 so that the PDF add-ons get installed.
When I try to uninstall Acrobat Pro, uninstallation asks for AcroPro.msi file. When i insert the Acrobat Pro CD, it has the file, but I get the error "package file is not windows package...etc..". This is the same CD from which I had installed Acrobat Pro in the past.
If I do not uninstall Acrobat Pro, when I install Frame8 and then continue to install PDF addon I get the message, you have a more updated version...installation will exit.....
Now I am left with no way to convert to PDF.
Any help, suggestion would be very useful.
Thanks
Bhagyashree
I would start by not listening to your friend...
Then, I suggest that you:
* Verify that you have all FrameMaker patches installed.
* If Acrobat is still on your system, see if you have a Repair Installation option on the Help menu and if so, activate it. Otherwise, I would try to reinstall and select Repair.
Once you have a working installation again, try setting your system default printer to the Adobe PDF printer, and from Frame, select File > Print and print to the Adobe PDF printer. On the Frame Print dialog box, _do not_ activate the Print to File checkbox.
If you still get an error, please let us know what the error message is. Also helpful are your operating system, amount of RAM installed, and other system information.

I have Acrobat 9.5 and when I try to create>pdf from scanner, it displays an error "Adobe acrobat has stopped working". Is there any way I can use this functionality?
Provide you have Acrobat 9 installed in an OS for which Acrobat 9 is compatible then you can use the functionality.
As well, you need a scanner connected, powered up, and the software installed. Acrobat 9 "prefers" TWAIN drivers.
Always visit the scanner vendor's site and download - install the latest greatest software.
n.b., The Acrobat 9.x product family passed into "End of Support" mid-year 2013.
As well the Acrobat 9.x product family is not compatible with contemporary OSs.

FrameMaker hangs and can't print to Adobe PDF
FrameMaker has been hanging and blowing up on me. Specifically, it hangs when I try to save all the chapters in a book. Some of these books are very small, maybe 20 or 30 pages. After I stop Frame thru Task Manager and reboot, I can reopen the book and my changes appear to be there. I looked through the forum and saw something that said it might be because the PC doesn't have enough memory. It has 3.5 GB RAM. Isn't that enough?
Also, when I print (to my default printer = Adobe PDF), if I unselect "print to file," nothing happens - no Distiller window opens - I don't see any new files generated. I can "save as PDF" just fine. I can "print to Adobe PDF" from other apps, just not from Frame. I can "print to file" and then open the resulting .ps; then Distiller opens and creates the PDF file. This is annoying - it used to automatically launch Distiller and create the PDF in one step instead of two.
I'm putting both this issues in a single topic because they both started at about the same time.
I tried re-installing Frame and Acrobat, but I didn't uninstall first.
I'm using Windows XP Pro and Frame 8.0p277.
So where do I go from here?
ThanksYes, the location for the Adope PDF printer had garbage in it. I fixed that. That has now fixed the problem.
However, Art's reply gave me an idea. I am using FrameMaker 8.0p277 (the version that came with Tech Comm Suite). Also, Acrobat 8 3D came with it.
Since then, however, I have installed Acrobat 9 Pro (which also provided Distiller 9).
Could it be that FrameMaker is trying to call Distiller 8, which no longer exists on my computer)?
Answering prev questions:
"So if you uncheck Print To File so the distiller generates the PS file and distills it automatically, nothing happens, right? It just sits there?
and
Have you tried selecting a different Job Option, like Standard, or High Quality?"
Yes, if I uncheck Print to File, nothing happens and no .ps or .pdf is created.
On the properties of my Adobe PDF printer
There are actually four entries. It does not seem to matter which one I choose.
I'm working now on seeing if I can get Acrobat re-installed. -

1. Since I was the only one to offer Scott an alternative to try printing to a single file with a PostScript Printer added and generating a PDF using Distiller to see if he still was getting error messages, who are you talking about when you said "isn't that exactly what was recommended?"
2. May I suggest that you re-read your FrameMaker manual and FrameMaker online help as well as review Acrobat online help on PostScript Printers. No were does it say that the only way to generate a PDF is using FrameMaker's "Save Book As...".
Also no were does it say that a valid PostSCRIPT printer as a Tektronix 550 as I suggested is "inappropriate devices for postscript generation for PDFs" I think Tektronix would certaily question your statement, as would any any ProstScript printer manufacturer.
There are still service providers that use PostScript printers and RIPs that have PostScript printers set as their default printer. These business still use PostScript files to print with.
Adobe notes that there are more than 25 oem vendors that distribute PostScript throughout the world, where installations now number more than 20 million.
If you go to Adobe's web site and search on "PostScript Printers" there are 1780 results. If you do a search on "Postscript Files" there are 9310 results. The first is "Create PostScript Files for Create Adobe pdf Online" and the 4th is"How to Create PostScript Files for Files in a FrameMaker Book".
Are you trying to tell them not to use their PostScript printers by saying that this "can lead to problems for imageable areas, fonts, colour and transparency, postscript level, resolution, etc.?"
Here is what Adobe says about Creating PostScript files (This info directly copied from FrameMaker's online help)
Saving documents and books as Adobe PDF
You convert a FrameMaker document to Adobe PDF by setting options in the PDF Setup dialog box, and then saving the document as PDF. You can also print the document to a PostScript file, and then convert it. For information on printing to a PostScript file, see "Creating PostScript files" on page 36
You can create a description of a document called a PostScript file (also called a print file). You might use a PostScript file to download the document later to a PostScript printer or to send the document to a service provider for typesetting. In addition, you can create an Adobe PDF file;...
Distilling PostScript files manually (Windows, Mac OS, and Sun Solaris)
If you have Acrobat Distiller installed, you can convert documents to PDF files by creating a PostScript file and then distilling the file yourself. By using Distiller, you can explicitly set some advanced settings having to do with compression, font embedding, and color conversion. However, saving as PDF (see Saving documents and books as Adobe PDF) is often faster and more convenient and produces excellent results. In fact, if you can set up Distiller Job options beforehand, they become available in the Settings section of the PDF Setup dialog box in FrameMaker. Also, if you're working on a platform where Distiller is not available, you can create the PostScript file and then move it to another platform to distill it there.
To distill a document or book to a PDF file:
To ensure that Distiller will be able to process the resulting PostScript file, use the latest version of the AdobePS printer driver (installed with FrameMaker) and the Acrobat Distiller PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file. Any other PPD file may be incompatible with Distiller.
Do one of the following:
Open a document and choose File > Print. In Mac OS, also choose FrameMaker 7.0 from the pop-up menu below the printer name.
Open a book and choose File > Print Book or File > Print Selected Files. In Mac OS, also choose FrameMaker 7.0 from the pop-up menu below the printer name.
Select Generate Acrobat Data to include the settings, and then click PDF Setup and set up the PDF file. -
I am trying to create pdfs using add-ins in Word and Excel through Acrobat Pro XI. I cannot set defaults for page size or bookmark display. Does anyone know how to do this?
Page size is dictated by what is configured for the authoring file. For custom pages sizes you'd make a matching custom page size for Acrobat (see Acrobat's Help).
For PDF Bookmarks you use Acrobat's PDFMaker with a supported version of Word or Excel.
You configure the PDFMaker's Preferences such that PDF Bookmarks can be made.
Coming from Word the default Word Headings are used. You can also configure to used the default Word Styles.
Coming from Excel you can only use the names of the worksheets within a work book.
Alternatively you can create Bookmarks for a PDF manually using Acrobat XI (and earlier versions).
Note that Word "Bookmarks" are in no way the same as PDF "Bookmarks".

TPS file is not deleted after FrameMaker creates PDFs via Acrobat 8
Using FrameMaker 7.2 build 158, and Adobe Acrobat 8, when creating PDF files, the temporary PostScript file (*.tps), which is created before the final PDF, is not deleted after the creation of the PDF is complete.
This is a big deal for us because we are using a tool which hooks into the PDF-creation of FrameMaker/Distiller, and is reliant on this TPS file being deleted.
Is this a known bug? Does Adobe know about this? Do any other users have workarounds for this?Thomas,
FWIW, speaking from experience with the Save As route, I've seen
random "phunnies" in the final PDFs (such as the missing fonts
issues), a bigger .tps file than the .ps file generated from directly
printing to file, slower throughput in both the intermediate
postscript file creation and actual distilling (probably tied in to
the larger .tps file) and other differences from what the joboptions
should have been.
There should not have been any differences in the file sizes being
created if the same printer instance/configuration was actually being
used. I also see this on some automated runs with Miramo. It's not
consistent either - sometimes it works fine and then the next run, the
process is considerably slower and there are dropouts in the PDFs.
So far, manually printing to a ps file and distilling always seems to
work without any issues.
Your mileage may vary.

Can't create PDFs from Acrobat or Word?
Downloaded the 8.1.4 update and now I can't create PDFs from Acrobat or Word. If I try to create a PDF from the print menu, I get a message indicating that there are no print drivers for this...any ideas?
Thanks for responding. Yep, I tried repairing it...no dice. Then I realized that I'd re-installed AA Pro 8 (having completely given up on the AA Pro 9 upgrade that crashed my system) but not the updates. So I went through and re-installed each update. Still no dice. Then I did another repair. Nope. When I try to create a PDF via the print menu, I get a "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup." This tells me that I have driver problem. But everything else prints fine, and I'm pretty sure Acrobat doesn't have drivers. I'm stumped...

When creating PDFs, the PDF does not open.
I am using Acrobat Pro X...and have had no problem creating PDFs. Suddenly today when I create the PDFs, although they are created, the PDF does not automatically open upon creation (I have to go to the file folder location and open the PDF).
I tried repairing the Acrobat installation and that didn't help. And actually when trying through the Control Panel, a 2nd PDF printer was created which I cannot figure out how to delete (they both are listed under the same Adobe PDF printer).
So, the main issue is fixing so I the PDF automatically opens upon being created.....but if someone can help with the 2nd PDF printer that would be appreciated.
SteveThe check box is in the default properties of the Adobe PDF printer, under the settings tab. Get there with Start>Printers>select Adobe PDF and right click to check printing preferences. This is a selection, not a reason to reinstall. How it got unchecked is a different question.
If there are Adobe PDF printers present, just delete one of them or rename the second one to something else (like Adobe PDF backup). -
Unable to create PDF from scanner
My office uses a Canon iR-Advance C5035. I previously had a computer that was running an older version of Windows (XP, I think) and Adobe Acrobat Standard (6, maybe), and I was able to create PDFs with the scan function on the Canon.
This year we bought a new computer that is running Windows 8. I just purchased and installed Acrobat Standard XI, but I am unable to create PDFs using the Canon scanner. I keep getting a "Either scanner driver is not installed or scanner is not connected." error. When I look at the "Custom scan" option, the Canon doesn't even seem to be detected. I'm not sure how to address this problem and any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
-PaulLook under Control Panel>System>Hardware to see if the scanner appears. If not, then try Add Hardware (or whatever the option is in Win8) to install the driver (if available from Win8). If the cannon is on a network, you may have to go to additional steps to install it since the OS may not see it. The idea of looking for a new driver is also a good idea since Win8 (just like happened with Win7) is not shipped with a lot of the drivers.

Hi,
This looks like you clicked under the Adobe Online Services tab.
Also, subscription policy is only for online services. You dont pay every month for keeping a software.
Anyways, could you provide with a little more details about what versions of OS and Acrobat are you using.
Also, are you able to open Acrobat successfully or is there some error? Does that also happens with Reader?
(I am assuming that you are trying to create a PDF offline.) -

I am trying to print to PDF a publication that is full of oversize wiring diagrams from Adobe FrameMaker 9 and 7.2 with Distiller 9.0. The pages are all text and images ranging in size from standard A3 and A4 size sheets through to a foldout being 1470 mm W X 297 mm H. We have no problem printing A3, A4 and 630 mm W X 297 H. These are all Portrait images. When we set up our custom print size to accomodate the 1470 mm W X 297 mm H we get the pages without the content, and even some of the oversize pages are not the correct size on print.
The page sizes we are using are:
A4 (This is all good)
A3 (This is all good)
630 x 297 mm (This is all good)
840 x 297 mm (Problems from here on)
1050 x 297 mm
1260 x 297 mm
1470 x 297 mm
The procedures we are using to set up the printing are:
1. Print to PDF (Also tried save to PDF)
Under Print Setup make sure you select PDF Driver and select the Paper size as largest that is in your book. Example: If A4 and A3 pages, print to A3
2. Select Generate Acrobat Data and select
See attached Screen shots for the settings we are using:
Note: Back in FM Print dialogue; make sure Print to File is turned OFF, before you click Print
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

AJ WilkinsonCreate a specific FM file having a custom page size appropriate to each unique "content set".
Create a FM Book file.
Add the FM files.
Work up configuration (Hypertext, Cross-References, autonumbering, variables, etc.) as desired.
In Print Setup -
Set page size to the page size of the largest FM file in the Book.
(you may have to go into the Adobe Printer and add one or more custom page sizes so the page size needed is available)
Set orientation to landscape if any FM files are such.
Idea is, if needed, FM files for the content in the various page size/orientation that is appropriate to the content.
If that means 1FM file of custom size and appropriate orientation then do it.
Book files can deal with it.
Back to Page Setup.
Do the Page Size & Orientation.
Access 'Propertires' - is the Distiller job option selected the one you want/need?
Create one if need be so that it is available.
Go into the Print Book dialog.
Configure as needed (remember Acrobat data links, etc. &, oh yes, back in FM be happy with the configurations under tabs for PDF Setup).
Print the Book.
Use Distiller to take to output *.ps to *.pdf (may want the use a "watched folder")
Output PDF can/will reflect the the different page sizes and page orientations.
n.b., FM-Acobat-Distiller releases have a "sync band".
It is discussed somewhere in some kb articles.
I'm not sure if FM7.2 functions quite right with Distiller 9.
FM 8 will (&, of course FM 9)
I've had no problems with FM7.2 or FM8 and Distiller 8.

Distiller 5.0.5 and Office 2000 - creating pdf not working
I am using XP Home Edition SP2, Distiller 5.0.5, and Office 2000
Can not make PDF with 2000 WORD or 2000 EXCEL.
- WORD: file > print > Distiller results in the conversion hanging up. The file can not be deleted from the print que until the computer is restarted. I can not create a postscript file by unchecking the "don't send fonts" check box and check "print to file". Doing so results in a "prn" file.
I can create PDF with PUBLISHER if I create a postscript file by unchecking "Dont sent fonts", checking "print to file", adding "ps" at the end of file name, then clicking on the ps file, does result in a pdf file
I can create pdf files with file > print > distiller in PhotoShop and PaintShop ProAfter creating the PRN file, open the file in Distiller and see if you get a PDF. If so, then look for AcroTray running in the background. If not, then you need to start it (it is in the Acrobat 5/Distiller folder).
