Framemaker 8 Embedded Graphic prints as a Gray box

Sometimes when I save my book as PDF, an imported graphic prints as a gray box in the PDF and then corrupts the framemaker source file.
It loses the graphic (an imported .WMF file) and substitutes a gray box.
Framemaker 8.0p277 on Windows XP SP2.
Has anyone else seen this problem ?

If it is imported by copy or as an OLE object, then it is known to happen. Try importing by reference.

  • HELP!  Exporting pdf issues - no email links and gray boxes around text

I'm a newbie to indesign, and trying to learn the program as I go.  I need to export my pdf for onscreen viewing.  When I "print" it works, but I get no email links, and those annoying white lines here and there.  I read that exporting would solve the email link issue, but it opened another can of worms for my project.  Now all my graphics have black or gray boxes across them, almost like censor boxes.  But my email links work.
Learning Adobe is like learning a new language, and I have far from mastered it.  So when I exported, I used the lowest resolution presets, assuming it knew what worked better than I did.  After dozens of unsuccessful exports, can someone please help??
Also, I've been reading posts that say to convert all spots to color to resolve the white line issue.  But it's grayed out in the ink manager.  What is the secret to unlock it?
    Thank you!!

Thank you for any and all help!
I have CS5.5, running on windows 7.  It is up to date as of 1 month ago.  Here's a sample of my problem pages.  Also, a screen shot of what it should look like.  My guess is it has something to do with the transparencies, since it's 2+ layers of embossed objects.  If I export in Acrobat 4 (1.3) these boxes don't happen. But then I get the thin white lines across my graphics, and no email links.  As for spot colors, I confess complete ignorance on all color issues,  but  I'm trying to learn as I go.  How can I export this correctly?

  • Framemaker 9 Graphics Show Grey Boxes Half way through Doc

    Hello,
I am using Framemaker 9 (service pack 2, windows XP) with a ~5000 page document, thie document has lots of embedded Graphics. When create a PS (postscript file) about half of the way through the PDF file the figures  Show Grey Boxes. This occurs using either the Framemaker save as PDF file or when printing to a PS. An error message apprears "Cannot Print Some Imported Graphics", I click OK and the systems creatse the PS file.  When viewing PDF the grey boxes appear.  Now for the interesting anomaly, I delete the first 2500 pages and the PS and PDF files are fine. If I delete only 1000 pages the grey boxex occur later in the document.
Any help on this is appreciated,
    Nick

same error occurs on computer with Service pack 3

Ah, 1gig of RAM. Unfortunately I don't think that's going to cut it in FM9, not for that large a size document. You might try rebooting, not turning on any other app like e-mail, and see if you can manage it then, but I'd doubt it.
Even though the job works with FM7,   FM 9 has substantially more features that could definitely require more  RAM, e.g. the unicode features alone.
Here's a comparison in Task Manager on my XP system:
FM9 running without a doc open shows as approx 110,320 K
FM7 running without a doc open shows as approx 34,508 K
    Other questions:
in your FrameMaker Preferences (File > Preferences) do you have "Save FrameImage..." turned off? If not, that will add exponentially to the memory use. A couple of other things that might save some memory:
FM automatically loads the Windows Character Map app. You can find it listed in your Task Manager. To save some memory you can disable this, following info in this thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/click.jspa?searchID=3832601&objectType=2&objectID=2325331
AND, here's another REALLY important thing to test: you want to test using FM without any of the Workspaces open. The workspaces definitely add time and memory usage in FM9. Doesn't matter whether you actually use any number of variables or markers or whatever in the doc, just the work that FM has to do to scan the entire doc to update these panels takes an enormous amount of effort.
Being sure that all the workspaces are really closed can be a bit tricky; I'll post instructions in a separate post.

  • Gray box around images in PDF and when printing? Why?

    Hi,
I'm using CS5 and I'm getting a gray box around any image embedded in my document.  The box comes if I click on it when a PDF and it prints around them.  I can't seem to figure this one out.  I'm not used to prepping files for print and I'm trying to send this out to someone who needs to print it.
    It's CMYK.
I've tried to flatten transparency using both vector and rasterize.
I've made sure the images are embedded.
    I can't figure this out!!
    Please, help.
    Thanks.

does this look like your problem?

  • Gray box for logo generating pdf from fm book

    Greetings,
I have a large FrameMaker book that I've generated pdfs from a million times. We cleaned up our logo, so I dropped it in and tried to generate the usual pdf. a gray box resulted for the logo only. all other artwork displayed fine. i tried scaling down the logo, changing formats, changing import methods, etc. all failed. however, generating a pdf from the book if I remove a few chapters gives me my logo. Am I running out of resources? I'm using tech comm suite 1.3 on vista. There are no clues in the acrobat log. show large images is turned on in the adobe reader.
I used the obvious workaround: generated two pdfs, one with just the logo page and one with the rest of the book, then combined them. But this process is not practical long term. Any clues?

    A couple questions:
What format is the new logo file?
Given that it works with some component files, but not in the book... I'd guess that it may be a resource issue. How much RAM and free space do you have?
And when you "dropped it in," does that mean imported into one file by reference, or copied in, or imported into a template that you used to update all files in the book..... or something else? And if it did update multiple files, did you double-check them to make sure the path to the graphic is correct?

  • When I forward an HTML email with embedded graphics to someone, it forwards it as plain text.. this is driving me batty.. how do I forward such mails INTACT??

I have the latest Thunderbird installed on a new 64-bit Winblows Eight netbook.. fantastic program, but one problem is driving me absolutely batty, and after using the latest Thunderbird for weeks, I simply can't figure out how to fix it..
I'm on a lot of mfr. and other kinds of mailing lists, like eBay watch list alerts, and so on.. these are not s p a m (although I get plenty of that.. who doesn't).. but lists I WANT to be on..
Many such emails from those mailing lists are in HTML format with embedded graphics.. I'm not talking about graphic file attachments, but embedded graphics which are coming from the senders' servers, and appear AS a graphic in the email.. sometimes such emails are one huge graphic with hardly any text.. all well and good..
However, here's the problem.. when I want to forward such an email to a friend, Thunderbird ALWAYS formats it as plain ASCII text.. I know this because I look in the "sent mail" folder, and can see that it has turned an HTML email with embedded graphics into plain ASCII text..
I absolutely can't figure out how to get it to forward an HTML email with embedded graphics INTACT, so the sender receives it looking the way it looks when I receive it from a mailing list, or an advertiser, or eBay, or whoever..
Is Thunderbird capable of forwarding an HTML email with embedded graphics INTACT?.. If so, how / where do I turn on that capability?..
If the capability to do this isn't built into the program, is there an add-on I can install that will give it that ability?..
I am not new to computers.. but this really has me stumped.. I want to put Thunderbird on my 32-bit Vista laptop and stop using its horrible "Windoze Mail" program, which I've been using for years, and is slower than snot, and has all kinds of other problems..
So, assuming whoever reads this FULLY understands my question, PLEASE tell me how to get Thunderbird to have the ability to forward an HTML email with embedded graphics AS-IS, so the receiver(s) I forward it to see it exactly the way I see it when I receive it.. if that ability is built in, please tell me how to turn it on.. if that ability is not built-in, please tell me what add-on I need to install to give Thunderbird this capability.. if Thunderbird absolutely can't forward an HTML email with embedded graphics at all, please also tell me that..
A virtual box of candy and a dozen long-stemmed roses to anyone who can give me a solution that works..
    Thanks..

Dear Mr. Toad (my all-time favorite ride at Disneyland ;-) ..
Thanks so much for your detailed reply.. my netbook is in the bedroom, turned off.. I (so far) only use it in the evening, in the bedroom.. I've saved your response, and will try your suggestions, and let you know if they solve the problem I described. I really appreciate you taking the time to post such a detailed reply..
I can't answer your Thunderbird "configuration" questions, because I'm in the living room, using the crap Vista laptop, on which I plan to install Thunderbird, and then take Windoze Mail out in the street and drive over it a few times.. I'll get back to you one way or the other, and let you know if your instructions solved the problem, or not..
I don't understand why Thunderbird "out of the box", so to speak, simply doesn't forward HTML emails with embedded graphics, (like Outlook Excess, and Winblows Mail do).. without having to go through those steps. I personally HATE HTML email, but over the years, it's become more and more prevelant.. so it's a problem I must fix..
    Thanks again..
    Harv..

  • EPUB - GRAY BOXES Instead of Images

When exporting my epub book, I get gray boxes instead of images. Has anyone else run into this or know what to do to resolve this issue?
All the images are linked properly and InDesign is saying I don't have any errors. The only way I can get images to show up is ONLY if I select "Use Existing Image for Graphic Objects". But if I select this, I lose the cropping and orientation adjustments I've made in my inDesign file. I've even tried just copy and pasting an image into the document itself.
Needless to say I've spent way too long trying to figure this out and haven't made any progress...

If other people can export it fine but you can't, then I would suggest some troubleshooting of your InDesign install.
Have you tried rebuilding your preferences and then re-exporting?
Have you made sure you're not using any third-party plugins that automatically load with InDesign?
Assuming you've done those two tests and are still having a problem, then try it on a test account on your computer. Package the InDesign file and put it on a thumbdrive (or I guess you could just download the files from the link above) and then log out of your account on your computer, and log in again to a fresh new account with admin privileges. (If you haven't created one yet, you should do that first before logging out ... lol)
When you log in to the new account, all the apps are available to you but none of your other account's files or user settings. So open InDesign, download/copy over the packaged file, and open the layout and export. See if that makes any difference.
I have a short course on lynda.com on troubleshooting InDesign (just 10 short videos) that goes over these and other steps.

  • [SOLVED] Gray Boxes in GTK3/Gnome 3.4/Gnome Shell

    Greetings,
I have googled for this, but maybe my lack of ablility to exactly describe the issue as a search term is why I can't find anything. But I hve a problem that is just driving me crazy....
I have gray boxes that are round menu items, tab names, the clock and user name when screen is locked, etc... that is really throwing off the look of my desktop and driving me crazy.
Here are some screenshots to hopefully show what I mean.
The first two are with the adawita theme. The least one is with the evolve theme to show it doesn't seem to matter what the gtk theme is.
    Here is what I've done:
1.) This might be why it had happened: I tried out gnome-unstable for a few hours, to get a look at gnome shell 3.6. After deciding that I wasn't ready to move to it yet (some of the extensions that I'd still want for it aren't there yet), I removed the repository, did a pacman -Syy, did a pacman -Rcsn of gnome, then reinstalled gnome as per the wiki.
2.) I have removed all of the stuff on /home to get a fresh start after seeing the boxes.
3.) I have removed with Rcsn and reinstalled gnome.
4.) I have made sure to install the gtk2 theme engines, just in case.
5.) I read through the gtk+, gnome pages on our wiki.
    6.) I googled.
And yet, I still have those damnable graphic glitches....
So I am banging my head against a wall here, I do hope someone here can help, at least point me in the right direction. Thanks!
    UPDATE
Ok, so I have fixed my issue. I ended up pretty much removing everything except the base system, xorg, video drivers, and such. Somehow or another, there were left behind traces of my brief experiment with 3.6 that was causing the issue.
Once I got down to almost a fresh new start I was able to re-install gnome and the graphic mess-ups were gone.

  • Color of embedded graphic different in Adobe Reader 9?

    Hello,
I have a cross-platform and cross-version issue that I am hoping that this is the right place to get get some insight on. I normally do most of my work on a Mac (OS X 10.5.4 PPC), and created a document in Microsoft Word 2008 (w/latest patches) that has one embedded graphic, a custom black horizontal line that I designed myself as a PNG with some alpha transparency. When I print the document to PDF, either using the built-in renderer or the Acrobat 8 PDF printer installed on the machine, I am able to open the resulting PDF in either Preview or Acrobat 8.1.2 on the same computer and it looks as expected.
However, if I take it over to my PC running Vista SP1 (w/latest patches) and open up the PDF in Acrobat Reader 9.0, the color of the embedded graphic is different, a kind of orange-y brown which looks really horrible; it is as if the normally grayscale embedded image has been tinted. The text of the document remains black, it is only the embedded image that has had its color changed. If I open the Word document on the PC in Word 2007 (again, w/latest patches), however, the embedded graphic looks grayscale, as expected.
I have tried a few things such as specifying the image format as grayscale within Word 2008 before printing to PDF, converting the PNG into GIF with Photoshop CS3 on the Mac (which shows it as grayscale) and re-embedding it and printing to PDF/X instead of PDF, but none of these seem to make any difference.
Unfortunately I don't have access to Acrobat Pro 9.0 for the Mac or Acrobat Reader 8.1.2 for the PC so I cannot tell if it's the switch between platforms or between versions that lies behind the issue, but does anybody have any ideas on how to make it look the same across platforms?
    Thanks,
    A

There's not really anything you can do with just Reader. The creator of the form set it up to behave this way, by intention or not. It could have been set up so that a user is unable to enter more text than can be displayed in the area defined for the field, and that the font size would automatically decrease as the limit is reached, down to a minimum size of 4. If you know who created the form, you may be able to request a new version.

  • Some email images do not show while using the icloud web app.  I can see the images on my IOS devices and in gmail but I only see a small gray box in the icloud web mail app.  Load HTML images is checked in preferences.

Some email images do not show while using the icloud web app.  I can see the images on my IOS devices and in gmail but I only see a small gray box in the icloud web mail app.  Load HTML images is checked in preferences.  Is there a solution to this issue?

I've seen the opposite issue.  My wife recieved an email with jpg attachments.  She couldn't see or print them on her iPhone 4S but they showed up fine in iCloud or in the mail app.  I had her forward the email to herself and then they showed up.  I assume there is an issue with how Apple is processing the attachments and resending causes them to get reformatted in a way that makes them easier to handle.
So yeah.  Seems like some bugs.  Hope Apple fixes them soon.

  • Pictures and Scanned images are now gray boxes

I have Adobe Reader XI and it will no longer show images or allow me to scan from my printer.  I have a mac, and have always been able to create pdfs and scan to them until the past few days. My version is up to date. Images in pdfs and the scanned documents now appear as gray boxes.

All  your images are pointing to your Templates folder. I would guess that they are not uploaded to the server.
I don't think that is the ideal place to store your images. Normally, one would have an image folder and images would be there. Also your css is also in your Templates folder, not ideal again.
    IE:
    Your css: <link href="../Templates/style.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />
    Your image(s): <a href="../Templates/still_life_1_css.html"><img src="../Templates/still_life_1_thumb.jpg" width="35" height="35" border="0" /></a> <a href="../Templates/still_life_2_css.html"><img src="../Templates/still_life_2_thumb.jpg" width="35" height="35" border="0" /></a>
Usually when they are greyed out, then could be a broken link.

  • Connected wirelessly to Canon printer MX340. Duplex printing option is grayed out for me but not on my daughter's non-Mac laptop or husband's PC which is connected to the printer. Mine has two-sided option available at the Apple store. Any ideas?

We use a Canon MX340 series printer/fax/scanner. My husband has his PC hooked to it and my daughter prints wirelessly from it with no problem with her non-Mac laptop. I have trouble printing. Often it does not print and I have to delete the job from the queue. Other times it will print OK but two-sided printing is always grayed out in my printing options. When I took it to the Apple store and printed on their network (selecting their printer) the two-sided option was available. Makes me think the printer is set up wrong, but I am not certain. A fw times at home when trying to print I got an error message about incompatible fonts, but it printed anyway after deleting the job and starting over. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    OK, just an update.
Two years into this, I still find I can only do full duplex printing by using Windows XP running inside of VMWare. I've had occasional, ephemeral luck with duplex printing, but nothing long lasting.
I've tried this in Tiger and Leopard (now at 10.5.6), and I've had this issue with Canon printers MP780 iP4300 and MP610, direct connected to my Core2Duo 17" MBP. I also have this issue when printing over a network, but that's a much harder problem to solve.
Currently, this is my #1 most pressing issue for my Mac, because not being able to print from a computer when you print a lot is a really big drag, and using VMWare all the time is also a really big drag. Other people posting seem to be able to print in Duplex using the very same printers. What could be wrong with my MBP? I see the duplex box option, but most of the time it's grayed out as if my printer doesn't support duplex.
I've tried direct selecting printer drivers from the system preferences, but nothing seems to have an effect. And this is off of a clean Leopard install.
My wife now has similar problems with her new MBP - the Canon print drivers (CUSP & non CUSP) aren't allowing the Duplex box to be checked.
I am willing to pay good money to anyone who thinks they can fix this problem.
    Thank you,
    - Jeff

  • The new tab button is now surrounded by a large gray box after downloading the new version

Rather than seeing just the small rounded light gray button around the "+" sign for a new tab, there is now a larger, dark grey rectangle (larger than the new button itself) over the "+" sign. When I hover, the rounded part of the button appears, but the larger gray box remains.
It's almost like I'd like to write a short {display: none !important}, but I'm new to Firebug, and can't figure out how to get the name of that part of the screen.
I have a screen shot which I'd like to add to this post, but having difficulty adding it in.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,
You can add screenshots to replies only. Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration first to see if that gets rid of it. You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
    # Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
You can also see if the gray box appears in [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] - it could be caused by an extension.
If those don't help, then please attach a screenshot by clicking the '''Browse...''' button below the ''Post your reply'' box. This will help us to visualize the problem.

  • Gray box behind objects

What could cause an object to have a gray box print behind an object? I use IDcs2. When I design a page and print as an eps, then distill to pdf, I notice a gray-hazy box that appears behind objects. Most of the time the objects are non-filled boxes with just text in them. It's happened on gray-scale objects as well as color. This has happened before and I fixed it but I can't remember what I did. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

Thank you so much for the informative sites. I have learned a lot. I don't think, however, that's what is going on in my issue. I didn't start having the problem until I changed my color settings in PhotoShop and then I synchronized the settings with ID. I produce a newspaper each week. On each page there is text, photos, ads. The ads that normally have no fill in the box are printing with a gray fill.

  • Embedded Graphics do not show in Links Panel?

I'm guessing this is an embedded graphic. I received a packaged file for print, all is fine, but I'm pondering the "image" shown. (I was curious how they formatted the rules and type and started selecting)
After removing everything else from the document, Find Font show no fonts used; the links panel is empty; info for the frame lists nothing; it is not outlined type. One layer; show hidden characters is on.
The file package report lists Links and Images: 1 link (a stock photo used on page 1), 0 missing, 0 embedded.

I've been playing with building my own "Info" panel. It isn't as pretty as the built-in one, but it gives me better "raw" file format information in some cases. It would be interesting to see what it reports as the object type, if you want to send me your doc ...
