FrameMaker 9 crashing on Windows 7

Hey Framers
I have problems with my FrameMaker 9 installation. I set up a new Windows 7 (64 bit) machine with sufficient system resources - 8 GB of RAM, for example. A couple of days ago, I installed FrameMaker 9 patch 250 (standalone installation) on this machine. Yesterday I noticed for the first time that FrameMaker has the problems below:
When switching back to an open FrameMaker document after working with another program, for example, FrameMaker frequently has display problems. In this situation, I try to refresh the display, but this does not have any effect. When scrolling the document, white pages are displayed. Some time after that, FrameMaker does no longer react. I need to kill the FrameMaker process since closing the application normally is no longer possible.
Starting FrameMaker is extremely slow.
I really do not know what's going on. Would be so nice if anybody could help me with the problems above.
Cheers,
Nicole

G'day Folks,
No help I'm afraid. Just letting you know that I'm having similar problems -- slow interface and major display issues that only Task Manager > End Task can fix.
I'm using FrameMaker 9.0p250 on WIndows 7 Home Premium.
Food for thought:
• I've found that disabling the Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe; used for Aero) improves the GUI stability "somewhat", and that the GUI is significantly faster when the Paragraph Designer is closed! (And having the Char Designer or Table Designer open is OK, but not both!!!)
• I can reliably bring on the problem by Alt-tabbing to the Console window. When I do this, GUI hell breaks loose.
• I can only save workspaces when XP2 compatibility is enabled. Hmmmm.
• I've tried Frame 9 with the basic Windows 7 theme, with all Aero functionality disabled, and with minimal Advanced Performance Options (no Visual Effects; it looks like an NT machine) -- no improvement.
• I've found that 3rd-party Frame plugins, structured or unstructured interface, altering Interface Preferences, and general PC utilities (antivirus, reminder, etc) have no effect on the problem.
• My PC is quite new, with 4GB RAM and plenty of free hard disk space.
• Yes, video drivers are up-to-date and Adobe PDF is the default (via Sundorne SetPrint).
• I do still have Frame 7 installed on the computer as well. I wonder . . .
Any ideas very gratefully received.
Cheers,
Mark Lehmann

  • Framemaker 9 Crashes in Windows 7 / 64 Bit  Env. When I switch from Unstructred to Structured Files

    This is a fix.
I typically use Framemaker to edit structured DITA xml documents.  I recently got a Win 7/64 bit machine and decided this was a good time to upgrade to Framemaker 9. I installed Frame 9 directly onto this new machine.  It worked fine with my xml files.
Then I had to switch projects and work on some unstructured documents. In order to document the application these unstructured documents were for I had to turn off Windows Themes, as the  application I needed to document had  display problems with those on.  After I finished the unstructured documentation, I switched back to my DITA XML documents. But they would not open. I selected an XML file from the Open dialog and immediately FrameMaker 9 crashed. I tried turning Themes back on and chose the recommended Aero theme. No change. My XML files still crashed FrameMaker 9 as soon as I selected one to open. The error message came post-crash and did not come from FrameMaker: it said Windows was trying to find some information about the crash, but could not find any.
This problem may be specific to DITA or it may occur with other structured-unstructured switches. I don't know, I only work with DITA XML.
But I just found a workaround and would like to share it in case anyone else encounters this:
    1.     Open an unstructured file.
    2.     In the upper right corner of the screen you’ll see AUTHORING. Open the drop-down and choose DITA AUTHORING (or whatever type you use for structured documents).
    3.     Open the Structure Tools menu and select Set Structured Application.
    4.     In the dialog, select the structure application you want to use with the XML file you want to open, DITA-TOPIC-FM, for example.
    5.     Now open a structured XML file. It will open now.
    6.     Close the unstructured document without saving any changes to it.
    7.     Save your structured document  then work with it.You only have to do this once. The next time you open an XML file, FrameMaker will open it correctly.  It persists even after you close Frame 9 and reopen it.
It suprised me that Framemaker 9 didn't automatically switch back to Dita/structured mode upon opening an XML file, but I was glad there was an easy way to fix this.

Contacted customer service-- their ownly solution is to pull out the memory card and use a card reader.  Not acceptable because that does NOT create folders by day-- an extremely usefull tool if you take a lot of pictures. nor does it prevent multiple loads of files.     customer service intidicated the software was written by an unknown australian company-- no information on who they are or how to contact them.
It used to work just fine and still works on my laptop also using windows 7 64 bit.
A suspicious item is that it always asks for permission to modify or install software, long after it was installed; shows the standard windows dialog when loading new software.   suggesting that an attempt is made to modify a protected or forbidden file region.
I would like to see a serious attempt by canon to solve this problem, its gone on too long and many others have it.
The program runs on your laptop and on countless other 64-bit Windows 7 computers - including one located less than three feet from me as I type this. It doesn't run on your other computer, and the error messages suggest a file permission problem. And it's Canon's fault. That may be true; Canon's software is certainly not bug-free. But if I were a betting man, I'd bet that your problem is in your computer.

  • FrameMaker v11 crashes when scrolling

FrameMaker v11 crashes when scrolling within a file using a mouse wheel or Lenovo trackpoint. I have encountered this problem in multiple versions of FrameMaker. It does not crash if I use the scrollbar within the window. Is this just a known problem that has never been corrected, or is there a fix?

The issue of scrolling within the Xref panel that causes a fatal crash is supposedly fixed in FM12. Maybe your scrolling issue has been too – download a trial copy on a machine that hasn’t got any Adobe stuff on it, patch it up & try it out.

  • Framemaker 10 Crashes while opening Framemaker 7 file

    Hello Frame Users
If you are using Framemaker 10 on Windows 7 64 bit machine and encountering following issues:
    1. Framemaker 10 Crashes while opening old Framemaker files made in previous versions
    2. After the crash, not able to launch Framemaker 10 any more
    Then please do following:
    1. Un-install Framemaker 10 and clean the machine
    2. Re-install Framemaker 10
    3. Import old files rather than opening in Framemaker 10.
Please let me know if this works for anybody, also share any other resolution if there is any.
    Regards
    Adobe Support

Clean the machine, means, clean the locations where framemaker components gets installed in the machine.
How are you cleaning the Registry?
    And what about:
While opening old .fm (binary) files or old .mif files?
    And which old Frame versions?
    From what operating system platforms?

  • FrameMaker 8 crashing constantly

Been running FM v8 (unstructured interface) for a couple of weeks now (Windows XP), and it crashes at least 2 times every day. I can produce PDFs fine (with the highly publicized "fix"), but I'm getting all kinds of mysterious memory-related error messages. It seems to happen on Paste operations fairly often, and it seems to happen most often when I'm working in graphic frames. Not seeing much in the forums about FM8 blowing up, and I can't make heads or tails out of the error logs that FM is generating. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. FM8 is now costing me time and trouble, and I'm not impressed.

With Windows XP Professional SP2, FrameMaker 8 crashes with about 20 documents in a book whenever I either do an Update Book and Generate Lists or Save As PDF. I am not using a font manager but have installed Adobe CS3 including Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. I assumed that Acrobat 8 is a superset of the version of Acrobat Distiller that comes with FrameMaker 8 and hopefully should work.
    My configuration is:
    FrameMaker 8.0.0 for Intel
    Build: 8.0p266
Window System: MSWindows XP Professional SP2
Operating System: Windows NT 5.1 (major.minor.build: 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2)
System: Quad-Core, 4GB RAM, plenty of available disk storage, two 24 inch monitors
    Adobe Acrobat: 8.1.1
Adobe Distiller: 8.1.0 (Note that I started this up and this is what was displayed in the log text window (Im not sure if this is a problem):
    Acrobat Distiller 8.0
    Started: Monday, December 24, 2007 at 15:29:07
    Adobe PostScript software version: 3016.102
    CID support library initialization completed.
    Error in PDFX4 2007.joboptions:
    /CheckCompliance out of range
The book uses OpenType/Type 1 fonts, cross-references, tables, and links to graphic files. Page size is 8 in. x 9.25 (so it is smaller than letter page size). I made sure that no other Adobe CS3 application was running and I did the following with this book:
    1. Save [the book] As XML. Worked (all files were processed successfully to create the XML).
    2. Print [the book] to an HP Laserjet as a PRN file. Worked.
    3. Update Book and Generate Lists. Crash with Error number 8004 (Internal Error: 8004, 8443407, 4460228, 4414681).
    4. Save As PDF with PDF Job Options of Standard (just to keep it simple). Crash with Error number 8004:
And then, in this case, when I click OK, another error window is automatically displayed.
    Bam!
    Im not sure if:
The book has too many chapters.
The book has content that FM 8 doesnt like.
There is a coordination issue with Acrobat Distiller (does FM 8 still use Distiller?).
So, I made a simplified book with four files (Title, TOC, 1 chapter, and index).
    1. Saved As XML. Worked.
    2. Update Book. Worked! (This is great, compared to the long book example that crashed)
    3. Save As PDF. Crashed with error 8004.
I am packaging the files to send to Sameer of Adobe (looks like he volunteered in a prior posting) but I am having to keep both InDesign and FrameMaker documents updated cause I am not trusting FrameMaker 8 at the moment. If, as Larry Carey, says in a prior posting that there is a much publicized fix, Id sure like to know about it.
With Adobe CS3 installed I really dont want to remove / uninstall Acrobat 8 if I can help it. The Activate/De-activate feature can be a mess. I also dont quite know how to diagnose this issue because the number of possible causes of these errors are almost endless and I dont have the time. I still have FrameMaker 7.1 installed (is that the cause?) so I guess I could try that too.
    Please, any suggestions???

I tried another machine, 64 bit of course, as I want to deploy my application on a 64bit PC, but still got the same problem.
This other machine was from HP, iCore 3 (4 CPUs) 2.2GHz, 4GB RAM and running Windows Professional 64 bit.
Now as I see it, it could be a Run-time environment mis-match error.
For this I tried installing a 64 bit LVRTE from NI, but still no sucess.
I checked DEP, for all 3 PCs and it was set to the following
Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only (first option).
I am confused. I can not find a solution for this and it is really frustrating.

But I am assuming that when I make the installer, the 32-bit Run Time Engine is appened with the installer, as show below
Since from the picture you can see its including the support installers from '\Program Files (x86)\'
The application runs queries to fetch data from database in SQL server 2008, and for that I am using a Microsoft SQL Native Client 2008 R2 64 bit ( this is the only version that installs on either PC, even the one on which I developed my LV Application).
I am not using any driver, only toolkits for reports - and for that I un-checked the "Remove unused polymorphic VI instances" when making the executable, otherwise LV throws up an exception that share variable are not being included.
Yes I did reboot every time after I ran the installation.
    Still getting the same error.

  • Firefox was working fine in the morning, after half a day, it just crashed and now every time i try to start FF it crashes, i reinstalled FF, even tryed FF 4 beta, every time same crash report window, and nothing happens.

After a half day working normally, FF just crashed, and now i reinstall it, even tryed FF 4 beta, and still getting crash report. Cant even start in safe mode, same crash report window pop up.
Checked for viruses, malwares. Nothing helped.

Other applications print okay? If so, try deleting the Preview .plist
You need to look in your user Library/Preferences for the .plist. Hold down the option key while using the Finder "Go To Folder" command. Enter ~`/Library. Delete the .plist(s) for the application.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below. It does work with Mountain Lion:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/access-user-library-folder-in-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • I'm getting popup notices that Firefox has a problem, and Windows is looking for a solution; then it closes Firefox and says Windows will let me know if it finds a solution. No crash report window comes up.

Firefox is my default browser on my new laptop, with OS Windows 7. I've now had several instances where a Windows popup comes up saying Firefox has developed a problem and may have to close. It also indicates Windows "is looking for a solution to the problem." No solution is found, however, and Firefox is forced to close, with the happy notice that Windows will let me know if it finds a solution to the problem. If there is any tech data on the crash, I'm not sure where to find it, and no Firefox crash report window comes up. I thought it was an anomaly the first time, but this has now occurred at least 4 times in the past several days.

Well it came installed on my brand new Windows 8 pro w530 I received 4 weeks ago and has never worked. When you try to open power manager it just crashes. If you uninstall it the Lenovo software just keep reinstalling it. If you uninstall the Lenovo PM driver but do not reboot you can then open Power Manager. The minute you reboot the Lenovo software reinstallls the driver.
Why would Lenovo install software on a brand new Windows 8 laptop that is broken and useless? Tech support is absolutely no help they transfer you to the software department which wants to charge you to fix a problem that Lenovo created!!! It is crazy!! I was hoping someone here could solve this problem or maybe someone at Lenovo would see this and get the problem resolved. Tech support has been useless. I reported the problem to them at least 5 times.

I've installed Oracle Developer Suite (ODS) 10g R2 on numerous Windows 7 systems and have only encountered an issue with Forms Builder crashing a couple of times. Each time, I've been able to resolve the problem by modifying the OS PATH environment variable to ensure there is not a conflict between Oracle versions. If you only have ODS 10g installed, this should not be a problem, but if you have different versions of Forms installed - this could very well be the problem. My you might want to take a look at the OS PATH and make sure all Windows related directories are listed first. Then list the ODS directories second and lastly, list everything else. Oracle has a bad habit of putting it's program directories before the operating system directories.
It is also possible that your installation media is bad since your install is crashing in Windows XP mode as well. That being the case, you may want to download the installer again.
