FrameMaker bookmarks are misplaced in PDF

I use FrameMaker 9.0p237
When I create a PDF from a FrameMaker book, the bookmarks are misplaced in the PDF. For example, in my Frame file, I have:
Chapter Title A
.Heading 1 a
..Heading 2 a
Chapter Title B
.Heading 1 b
..Heading 2 b
But, when I create the PDF, some of the chapters' bookmarks appear as:
Chater Title A
Chapter Title B
.Heading 1 a
..Heading2 a
.Heading 1 b
..Heading 2 b
This doesn't happen for every chapter, but it does happen consistently for the same chapters each time I create a pdf.
What is wrong with my FrameMaker file that would cause this?

Sheila,
You are right! It is a flow issue. I had checked the flow earlier, but it showed each section as the same flow. But, then I tracked the flow by:
Zoom out to 25% and adjust the window size to see as many pages as necessary.
Click in the flow you want to check and choose Edit > Select All In Flow. The flow is highlighted, showing how it traverses the pages of the document.
The frame that contained the chapter title had become disconnected. So, all I had to do was reconnect them by:
1.     Select the first frame.
2.     Select the second frame.
3.     Format > Customize Layout > Connect Text Frames.
Thank you for your help. You led me to the correct path!

  • Acrobat X highlight the bookmarked area of a pdf

How do I make Acrobat X highlight the bookmarked area of a pdf when I select that bookmark?

If I have 10 bookmarks on the same page, I want the text I selected when I created the bookmark (or the text that is bookmarked because it was a Heading style in Word and I chose to have the styles be bookmarks when I created the pdf) to be identified easily on the page. When I click the bookmark in the bookmark panel on the left I am moved to that page, but the specific area of the page is not identified in any visible way.

  • Some CGM graphics do not appear when FrameMaker files are converted to PDF

CGM files are exported from ISO (Arbortext Isodraw 7.0 CadProcess) files. Then they are imported into Adobe FrameMaker 7.2, where all elements of the illustration are visible and can be printed. The FrameMaker FM file is converted to a PDF file using the Adobe PDF converter function of Frame. When the PDF file is opened by Adobe Acrobat 8,0 Professional, some, but not all of the illustrations in the file exhibit this problem (The callouts and other text may appear, but the lines, curves, etc. do not). The illustration prints the same way it appears on the screen. When exporting the ISO file as a CGM, the following selections are made.
When importing file into Frame, "Import by Reference" is selected.
When creating PDF in Frame, the following selections are made.
Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

    Thanks, Michael.
I will give it a try.

First you should update to the latest version of Acrobat 8, since you say
you are running Acrobat 8, you should update to 8.2.5. Update your
FrameMaker to 7.2p158. Those two steps might do the trick. If that fails
try using a different settings file. Perhaps High Quality or Press
Quality. I would never use Standard for anything where fidelity is

Please give me some suggestions to improve this issue. Regards

    Hey quantum info,
Thank you for posting at Adobe forums. We would love to help you out.
Could you please let me know if you have tried converting other web pages to PDF and checked if the same issue persists.
How have you been trying to convert the web page to PDF?
Are you trying to convert to PDF directly via browsers or using "File > Create > PDF from Web Page"  option in Acrobat.
Let me know more so that I can analyze where actually the issue persists.
    Hope to hear from you.

I have Windows 7 installed and Acrobat Pro 9 installed. There is an EXCEL application that creates PDFs successfully. • Chinese Bookmarks not displayed correctly even if fonts are embedded in PDF

We currently have a problem with Chinese PDFs containing bookmarks. All content is displayed correctly in PDF Reader, but the bookmarks are shown as squares, even though correct font (Sim Sun) is embedded in the PDF.
Display results of bookmarks are different from pc to pc. Seems to be depending on the installed system fonts. But why does the PDF Reader does not use the embedded fonts for the bookmarks?
    BR
    Bernd

Bookmarks don't use embedded fonts - you will see that they do not vary with the PDF. Like the rest of the text around the PDF (window titles, dialog captions, buttons...) it uses system fonts. So you need system support  for the Chinese (simplified or traditional) used in the PDF. I suspect this won't be a problem for most of the people who could read the Chinese, at least.

  • My PDF bookmarks are displaying weirdly

My PDF bookmarks are displaying weirdly: they are displaying in blank boxes (apart from the title), rather than as neat single line (or wrapped text) boxes. Also, the left-hand side of the Bookmark column is blank, the bookmark 'thumbnails' are way over to the right ..?? Any idea what's going on?? I'm on a Mac, Acrobat 9

    Hey Salby9,
Please check with other PDF files how does the bookmarks appear as this might be a document specific issue.
What version of MAC OS are you using?
Was this PDF created using Acrobat or other tool?
    Please let me know.

  • Reset PDF bookmarks when saving as PDF from structured FM - Book 11.0 with fm components (*.book).

    Hi,
I've read the forum discussions/solutions on setting PDF bookmarks, but I'm afraid the various solutions appear to only work if you are consistently working in .fm book files, not if your source files are in structured .fm format.
For example, I have to constantly reset the bookmark settings in FrameMaker when I follow our PDF process of saving the structured FM files via the File -> Save Ditamap As -> Book 11.0 with fm components (*.book) route. I can set the bookmarks in the first file of the book, and/or set them using the Format -> Document -> PDF Setup menu options. But an hour later, if I discover I need to make a change in our source material (.ditamap/.xml) and create a new PDF again, I must make the same exact bookmark settings at the .fm level in this process (i.e. creating new .fm files from the .ditamap/xml files overwrites the previous .fm files, requiring bookmark setting, again).
I think the only possible solution for a short-cut in this situation is to write a script to set those bookmarks each time we go from .xml to .fm. Does anyone see another way around this?
    Thanks!
    Diana

    Hi Diana...
You're right that only FM binary files can store PDF setup information (in theory XML files could store this data, but that's not the way it's currently set up). In order to have this data available in files generated from XML, you'll need to set it up in the structure application template(s). You also need to make sure that all files in the book use the same tag names. The following topic was written for DITA-FMx users, but the concept should apply to regular FM-DITA as well ..
    http://docs.leximation.com/dita-fmx/2.0/?ditafmx_setuppdfbookmarks.html
    I hope that helps.

  • Bookmarks in an exported pdf do not work

I am writing a teacher guide in support of an activity using iBooks Author. I know that many of the users of this document will not have iPads/Macs, so I also want to export the document as a pdf. Within the document, I have several bookmarks, pointing to other content in my document (i.e. "click here to go to the roster page"). When the file is exported, the links are active in the pdf, but when I click, nothing happens (apart from an "error beep"). If I open the pdf in Adobe Reader, I can see that the linked URL is "ibook:///chapterguid(#########...)", so I suspect that is the issue...the pdf is linking to an iBook site rather than internally to the document. I've tried creating links to text bookmarks, specific pages, and specific sections and all of them fail in the same manner. I suspect the links will work fine within iBooks, but since many of my audience are limited to pdf-only, is there some way I can force the IBA bookmark to do an internal link, rather than an ibook:///... link?
I'm using iBooks Author 2.2 on Yosemite 10.10.2.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    --> John

I don't have Acrobat, but yes, they work fine in Reader. Thes PDFs are going out to people who have all different computers/OS. So what is the best setting to use from the ID Export dialog? I may have to avoid the long URLs for Preview users. Thanks.

  • InDesign CC book bookmarks not working in PDF

    Hi
This is less a question and more an answer to a problem I was having that I found an answer to elsewhere so I thought I'd post it here for others.
I have a 580 book in InDesign CC with a TOC and automatic bookmarks for all the chapters and subsections across the book's 10 documents. The bookmarks work perfectly in InDesign but when I exported to PDF (interactive, with bookmarks included) only the bookmarks within the first document worked. All the others were listed but went to the first page, not their correct page.
I found this link which gave me the answer: http://forum.rpg.net/archive/index.php/t-319074.html
Basically, don't mess with the TOC after it has been created.
I had made a few tweaks to the TOC after creation, such as deleting an extra tab character, applying character styles, inserting column breaks.
Having read the suggestion at the link above, I fixed the extra tab and a couple of other minor text edits at the source paragraphs, tweaked my TOC paragraph styles to adjust spacing and recreated the TOC. It exported perfectly - working bookmarks across the whole book. So then I went back and did a bit of experimenting and found that I could apply colour to the TOC text by directly applying swatches to selected text and it still worked. To get rid of entries that I didn't want in my TOC and to get column breaks where I wanted them, I changed my text frame to single column and threaded multiple single-column frames of varying height on and off my page. This also exported perfectly. I didn't try applying character styles or making any edits to the text.
    Hope you find this useful.

In my Acrobat bookmarks are visible but doesn´t seem to take you anywhere... TOC seems to work as it should. InDesign makes those bookmarks point to a hyperlink destination, not to a page. And that named destination get it´s name from document name. You have a special character (second character) in your document name. May be it causes some troubles?

  • Bookmarks in an Interactive PDF

When I export a large book from CS6 to an interactive PDF, the bookmarks are jumbled. Many are missing the chapter heading so the levels within those chapters are thrown off and some chapter heading appear as a lower level at the end of the previous chapter.  The last seven chapters appear at the beginning (in reverse order).  The contents within those chapters seem to be in correct order.  There are also capitalization issues.
The book is made up of 38 documents (Chapters) and is 584 pages, with appx 1860 Chapter headings and subheadings that should appear as bookmarks.  I have tried changing things in the main documents but that doesn't seem to change even the cap problem.
Where is the PDF bookmarks generated from in InDesign and can I fix it before exporting because I don't really want to have to reset 1860 bookmarks in Acrobat?

There are two ways to create bookmarks from InDesign: (1) Manually from the Bookmarks panel, or (2) creating a Table of Contents in Layout > Table of Contents. The bookmarks should be generating if the checkbox for creating PDF bookmarks is checked, by the way you've set up the TOC. You can set up levels  of bookmarks there.

  • How to update bookmarks when merging two PDF files?

We have a company catalog that gets generated once a night.  It's three step process:
Step 1)  A raw XML file gets generated from our main ERP software (Microsoft Dynamics).
Step 2)  Then that raw XML file is ran against a stylesheet with XEP to produce a nice professional looking catalog.
Step 3)  And the third step is a script that merges the front and back covers with the main catalog produced in step 2.  Each cover is two pages (front and back).
My problem is when step 3 runs it produces a final catalog but all the bookmarks are off by 2 pages because the front cover adds two pages in the very beginning.  This post may be premature because up until now I've been merging the PDF pages with a program called "GhostScript" and it allows me to merge them via line command.  I'm just now trying out AcroExch.App COM Object for VBScript so I'll see if it works but wanted to fire this out for help to see if anyone has encountered this or can confirm if Adobe automatically updates them for you?  When I "Merge" the PDF files through Acrobat Pro they get updated automatically, so hopefully it will work the same way with AcroExch.App Object.   Thanks guy!

I think you might be misunderstanding what I'm saying... we are not performing tasks for non-licensed individuals.  We purchased a copy of Adobe Acrobat Standard so we could create a PDF of our catalog.  That catalog we then put on our website and let people download it.  Since our products change all the time, we generate a new catalog every night.  The term "server" is just a place where a script runs, I could have it run on my desktop computer if that's really an issue but I think we're talking semantics.  Acrobat is not what produces the main catalog PDF, that is done through XEP when it runs through the raw XML produced by our ERP software every night.  The only thing we want Acrobat to do is an automated process to merge 3 PDF files together:  Front Cover, Main Catalog and Back Cover.  That's it.   Are you saying that is against the EULA of Adobe for us to do that?
Now for the bookmark problem, what do you recommend I do then?  When I merge all three of those PDF files in Acrobat Standard manually it works perfect.  All I'm trying to do is automate that process once every night.  I know how to automate with Acrobat, I just can't figure out how to fix the bookmark problem?

  • Acrobat bookmarks are lost when resaving the file

    Hi,
I am converting a docx to pdf using Save as --> PDF --> clicking on options and selecting create bookmarks using headings and publish.
The conversion is done perfectly. However after encrypting, or changing a name of a bookmark and saving after that, the bookmark links are lost. When I right click on any bookmark and checking there link, there is nothing.
I noticed that if I use Microsoft Word 2007 with SP2 this problem is resolved. However, I have various pdfs already converted (and don't have the original doc) which I need to encrypt. However this is not possible to do so as they lose their bookmarks.
Is there a solution for this?

I am seeing a similar bug in Acrobat, and I am seeing it in both Acrobat 7 and Acrobat 9.
If I have an open PDF, and I choose File > Save As, then rename the PDF, all bookmarks are lost.
    Gone. Poof. Bye-bye.
If I rename the file in Windows Explorer, the bookmarks are retained just fine.
This happens without exception. Every PDF file.
I simply cannot use the File > Save As command at all. Ever.
First detected it in Acrobat 7, and I am still seeing this behavior in Acrobat 9.
