FrameMaker loses formatting during crashes

I recently upgraded from FrameMaker 8 to 10, and I have noticed that Frame 10 has a charming habit of losing formatting when it crashes. So for example, if a paragraph tag is supposed to be bold, all text with that tag will no longer be bolded after the crash. The paragraphs are still tagged correctly, but I have to go back and apply the "Default Font" character tag to each paragraph with mangled formatting. It's incredibly aggravating, and I usually just revert to an older version of the document (and copy any new or changed material over), but obviously this is inefficent and will be error-prone in the long run. Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen this bad behavior?
I don't know if it matters, but I am using Windows XP Professional 32-bit, and all of my files were created in Frame 8.

1. Same system for FM8 and 10 -- but what OS & SP? -- always useful for us to know when trying to track down "issues".
4. Reboot after crashes.  I always reboot after crashes, to my way of thinking there's just too much chance of something critical to operation getting clobbered during the crash.
5. Event viewer. I would also check events just prior to FM's crash to see whether there are any that seem "suspiciously close". For example, do you also use any Office 2010 apps? If so, there's a known crash in Word and Outlook that involves a file called "usp10.dll"  which is the Uniscribe (unicode) font display module that you might see in the Event log. There's some sort of incompatibility with Adobe PS fonts, very often with Helvetica but also other PS fonts.
AFAIK FM doesn't apparently use usp10.dll, but seeing as font rendering is so essential to FM it wouldn't surprise me if the crash is also affecting something else  font-related that FM does rely on -- e.g.  I hear echoes of the still-an-issue MS hotfix for XP, for text missing in PDFs,
Adobe blog: Hotfix for FrameMaker
In theory there's a hotfix issued Jan 21/2011 for the usp10.dll issue, but I have yet to find any corroboration that the issue is indeed fixed.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2119612
Error message opening a document in Word 2010: "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close" USP10.DLL
Oh, and even if you are not using Helvetica or other PS fonts in the documents intentionally, if the docs could possibly have been edited by other folks on other systems or other versions of FM, or where a different printer was selected as the default, or content was copied in from another FM file, then Helvetica could still be in the files, e.g. in the titles on reference pages, or in a table definition (even if there isn't an instance of that table format in the actual doc).
6. consfile.txt (not "console") -- ooops, apologies for sending you on a wild goose chase, my bad.
7. possibly crashes are related to creating PDFs. How do you create PDFs, do you typically use Save As, or do you print to a PS file and then distill? The distinction has often been critical in previous FM versions.

  • N95 repeatedly loses consciousness during the upda...

What is the problem as my N95 repeatedly (already 5 times) loses consciousness during the update. There is plenty of power in the battery and I have charger cable connected.
The PC update software always asks me to resurrect the phone ("elvytä" in Finnish) by removing the battery and charger for a moment and reconnecting, pressing the power on button for a few seconds and then pressing some type of "try to resurrect" button on the update sw's user interface.
    I have tried to
    * not have the charger plugged in (no effect)
    * not to give pin (does not resurrect)
    * to give pin (seems the way to go but dies again)
After so many times of having to resurrect the phone I have now canceled the sw update, but now the phone seems to die on its own.
    What to do?

It's happened to me twice in the last 11 days, and it's happened twice to another user as well. See this thread for more:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4408720?start=0&tstart=0
Not too pleased about this, because it takes about 30 hours to sync my 64 GB Touch due to converting to 128 Kbps AAC. This never happened to me with any version of iOS prior to 6. It's just music that goes missing, and it is not due to wireless sync, which I disabled long ago.

  • Separation of RAW and jpeg formats during import?

    Hi everyone,
I'm new to Mac and more specifically iPhoto 11.......having fun though!!
Does anybody know whether iPhoto has the functionality to separate or create sub folders for both RAW and jpeg picture formats during importing?
This would save a fair bit of time manually moving photos between folders!!
I believe Aperture has the ability but I'm not ready to upgrade just yet.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Craig

    No it doesn't.
    Some possibilities:
    1. Use Smart Albums to separate them
    2. Remember that when you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a Jpeg preview. So, now you have two jpegs of the same Raw. Do you need to shoot both Raw and Jpeg?

I have an iMac (Mid 2010) and am running 0sx 10.8.5 and the WiFi always loses connection during sleep mode. I have seen numerous different solutions none of which seem to work. Can anyone help?

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.

  • FrameMaker 11 trial version crashing on save and cross-reference insertion

    Hi everyone,
I've recently started a new position. My prior background was heavily DITA, and I'd describe my FrameMaker experience as late beginner or early intermediate. The new position uses FM exclusively though, so I've been on a steep learning curve lately.
I'm using the trial version of FrameMaker 11, downloaded about two weeks ago, until the PO for my full FM 11 license is processed. I'm working in book and document files that have been upgraded, I believe, from FM 9 to FM 10 and then from FM 10 to FM 11. All of my colleagues are still using FM 10, with a mind to upgrade to FM 11 in the spring as our new budget comes through (I am, so to speak, the FM 11 guinea pig for the group).
My workstation is a brand new HP Elitebook laptop running Windows 7 64-bit (I believe our IT department downgraded it from Windows 8). Windows is fully up-to-date. My trial version of FM 11 is 11.0.1.382 and also up-to-date as of this message.
My issue: FM 11 randomly crashes several times a week, sometimes once a day or so, sometimes when I try any of the following:
Saving all files in a book (using Shift + the File menu command)
Saving individual document files (generally using the Save icon in the tool bar)
Attempting to insert a cross-reference (placing the insertion point within the document, then opening the Cross-Reference tool in the right-hand side bar)
The crash takes the appearance of FM freezing for several seconds, then the dreaded message window opening with the words "FrameMaker has detected a serious error and must quit", with columns of error codes below.
I've googled and binged and not found anything for this issue in FM 11, so I thought I'd post here. I have tried the following, based on somewhat similar discussions I've seen for crashes in earlier versions of FM)
    Mif-washing the files
Working in the Structured FrameMaker interface instead of the Unstructured
Neither of these has worked. FM 11 trial continues to crash. It doesn't happen often; I'd say that I'm able to successfully able to perform the above tasks 20 times or so, with the crash on the 21st. But on a busy day, that's a few crashes a day.
To mitigate damage, I have autosave set to every two minutes and gotten in the habit of only having one or two documents open, instead of all in a book, to minimize the number of recovery files I need to process.
After one of the initial crashes, I did as Adobe asked and forwarded the crash report to them for troubleshooting.
My colleagues are watching all this very closely, and my troubles might influence our decision to upgrade from FM 10 to FM 11. So any insight into this issue would be appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Eric

    Eric,
The multitude of unesolved x-refs may due to the font issues when updating the book. During an update, if the files aren't open, FM tries to open them in the background but if it encounters an error like a missing font, it skips the file and then any x-refs to that file are unresolved. This can cascade to make things look really worse than they are.
What is your default printer when you start FM? It should be the Adobe PDF prnter instance. If not, then you might want to insatll the Sundorne SetPrint utility (http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm) thta will automatically set this for your FM sessions only.
One other place where fonts can hide is in table definitions. The catalog stores the font information (and not just the explicit paratag) of the cells in the header and first row. As Jeff mentions, you need to check the MIF file in detail. An excellent tool for quickly browsing your MIF is Graham Wideman's Mifbrowse (http://www.wideman-one.com/gw/tech/framemaker/mifbrowse.htm).

  • Framemaker 7.0 consistently crashes when saving files as .rtf (and other related issues)

Thank you first of all for any help from anyone.  Secondly, I apologize for any of my FrameMaker naivety, I am just a beginner with it really.
I am having a problem when saving out FrameMaker files to rtf format (for eventual conversion to word -- some people just want parts of book in word so they can mess around with it).  Frequently, framemaker crashes and gives me a message such as this below. What can I do to get our documents into word format?
secondly, when i get them into word format, sometimes I have this problem when paragraph marks are turned on in word -- people that have recieved the word files I send them have complained about this and unfortunately they are people I cannot tell to just turn off the paragraph marks.  Why is that repeated text inserted into the line? It should just say "Removing Constraints" (with no parenthesis marks).  Some of our chapters are very long and manually removing this is not applicable.
    thanks for any help!

About the {XE xxx} fields in your output file, that's the way FM converts index markers and their content when outputting RTF; FM automatically turns on the display of these fields. I believe it's the same with cross-references and all other kinds of marker output.
With MIF2Go you can specify what to do with each different type of marker, so you could choose to delete them completely if you wanted, or else to retain the markers but convert them to the correct index references in RTF. Here's the section in the MIF2Go manual about the markers:
    http://www.omsys.com/dcl/usergd/rtfref_0120_5141_generating_an_index_in_word.htm#Xz105x557 827
    http://www.omsys.com/dcl/usergd/rtfref_0119_514_modifying_word_output_after_conversion.htm
I'm not sure whether MIF2Go has a way to control the actual display of these fields in the RTF or not, or whether that would need to be done by a vbscript after the RTF has been generated.

  • Score loses formating when printing to pdf in Logic Pro

Logic Pro 9.1.6 shows score ok in page view but when it prints to pdf the formatting goes weird with notes dropping off the stave. How do I fix this so I can print a score?

Michael: I have tested other programs ability to print to Acrobat and also tested ability for other programs to
export to Excel or Word. The only crash is when printing an Acrobat pdf from Morningstar Principia Pro I get a bad crash. The work around is to print to XPS and then convert the XPS file to Acrobat pdf. To get out of the crash which can't be fixed by Windows Task Manager shut down, is to open the printer file and tell the printer to delete the pending print job.
I'm using latest Version 9.3.4 Standard Acrobat; Win 7 Pro 64 bit, 10 g of RAM, HPE 390t standalone PC, no networking.

  • Keep Formatting during Copy and Paste in Text Box

    Hi everyone,
I'm using Adobe Acrobat XI v11.0.0 on Windows 7.
When I am copying and pasting numbers and text within the same text box, I lose the original formatting. How can I paste with the formatting retained? For example, if I copy Bold1234subscript , pasting within the same text box gives me Bold1234Subscript.
However, formatting is preserved when I copy and paste the entire text box.
    Thank you very much!

As far as I know you can't do that. In any case, it sounds like you are trying to use Acrobat in a way that is not part of its design. Go back to your original document and edit that, then create a new PDF.

  • Download to Excel after migration to 11g: Table lose formats

    Hi,
after migration to 11g we make some test.
Download to excel is not working correct. Calculated column lose the rounding, Table with green line lose the format of the borders.
    Is this a known issue?
    Regards,
    Stefan

Yes. Refer to ID 1380981.1 and ID 1451127.1
It depends on which version of OBIEE you're working with though and the Locale set for Excel.
    Please assign points if helpful/correct.

  • Framemaker file disappeared during TOC creation

During generating/updating a TOC file in a book file one of the content file is gone/removed/disappeared.
Although the contents of the file is correctly inserted in the TOC, the source file (.fm) is no longer traceable.
Restoring not possible, so signalled the company servicedesk.
    Not the first time!
In a previous discussion one of the causes was an "over-active backup system".
Is there more to consider, other causes?
    How to prevent this?
There is a lot of effort put in those files to create them.
All the work is done via a network.
Files are stored on a network disk.
Framemaker (structured) is installed locally (version 7.1 [P116])
    Your advice/comment will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

An over-active backup system that doesn't allow you to retrieve files from backup is not conceivable. Go back to IT and politely insist on speaking to someone who know what they are talking about. Unless I am misunderstanding. There must be backup files or what purpose is there to having a backup. One major purpose of having files on a network server is to ensure backup. My preferred working setup for for Frame that needs networking services so that multiple users can have access to the same files is to use a check-in/check-out system. You check out the files from the server, work on them locally, then place the file back on the server. With large projects, to much can happen if you are working on remote files---I'm not ready for cloud computing for things that count.
If I can stop ranting, if the TOC is showing content from a given Frame file, then I would think the file still exists. Perhaps there is some reason that it cannot be viewed. What kind of network disk are we talking about? What file system? How are you accessing the network disk. Perhaps someone in IT that knows what they are talking about can see if the file exists, but not visible to you.

  • Pages loses formatting and text when converting from docx or doc

I receive .docx or .doc documents that I need to convert to a PDF. However, I frequently lose both formatting and text when I open the document in Pages. I don't understand how to fix the problem. I have tried copying/pasting the text into a new Pages document, but nothing changes.
Also, I have heard there is a freeware program out there that some Apple users use that retains the formatting, but I don't know the name.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I have to use a PC in the meantime.

    Hi Tricia,
Like Yvan earlier, I must confess some surprise at Pages losing text content of a Word document on translation. Formatting, yet.
The only circumstance where text loss seems at all likely is if the text was contained in a Text Frame. Even then, I would expect the frame to be converted to a Text Box, and the contents retained in the Pages document.
Meantime, I would recommend you try OpenOffice.org or NeoOffice, either of which will open .doc and .docx files, and will save to either of those formats as well. The links will take you directly to the sites for these applications.
Regarding the long download times: a 24 hour estimate would indicate you are on a dialup connection, or getting only dialup speeds. Most public libraries and a large number of coffee houses here in Canada offer free wireless hot spots that provide a high speed connection. If that's also true in Colorado, you might find it more efficient to take your MacBook to one of them for a shorter download time.
    Regards,
    Barry

I might agree with Adobe's view *IF* RoboHelp were being sold and marketed as a generic HTML editor. The problem is, it's not. It's a Help Authoring Tool. I expect a Help Authoring Tool to have my back.
I suppose if I were to draw a parallel, I'd be seriously asking Adobe if they are now suggesting that by virtue of changing an HTML file name in the application that the tool should ignore any references to the old file name and allow all manner of broken links to result? It's the same difference as I view it.
I agree with your view that *AT MINIMUM* RoboHelp should ask me if I want all former references converted. The best case scenario would be for us to have an option that allows configuring the behavior.

  • 6i web report loses format

I am using Oracle Reports 6i. All the text is Helvetica, most of it 8 pt. The report displays as expected when I run it within the Report Builder tool. If I select the Web Preview with Use PDF, it displays as expected. When I deploy this report to the web (move the .RDF file to the Report Server) and use a URL with RWCGI60 and DESFORMAT=PDF, none of the data is displayed and some of the text, rectangular boxes, and vertical lines are moved around vertically on the screen, overlapping other text. I am logging in as the same database user. I am using the same version of Adobe Acrobat Reader in both cases. I need to display this report as a PDF. Is there a parameter that I need to set or something I need to do with a configuration file associated with the Report Server?
    Thanks for any help!

it's rare. normally html or htmlcss format may lose some thing, but pdf will always show everything.
it may be the graphic memory issue of your report server or font mapping issue too.

  • Occasional Unsupported Image Format during import, why?

Once in a while when importing from my camera (Sony A99) RAW format, I get the Unsupported Image Format on a few pics of the batch. It's random so I'm not sure when it would happen. The only way I find that will fix those images is launch aperture into repair "repair database". It's not a deal breaker as I don't lose any files but it's bit annoying and not sure why this is the case. Any ideas how to permanatly stop this?

I see this regularly ( one or two files, every other time I import?) with the built-in SDHC card reader on my rMBP.  What I do is simply note which files are corrupt, immediately re-import those files, and then delete the corrupt ones (sorted by date, they are side-by-side with their non-corrupt twin).  Iirc, only once have I had to re-re-import a file that failed to import properly on the first try.
I reformat (in camera) each card every time I fill it (and recommend this practice), but IME (casually observed and not tested) the problem originates with the built-in card reader, and not with the card.  How are you importing?
Perhaps only a coincidence, but I use Sony cameras.  I don't recall this ever happening with a CF card though.  (The rMBP does not have a CF reader.)
