Framemaker  re-linking

We are going to move our framemaker files and the graphics files that are linked in it to another server.   Some of our framemaker files have hundreds of linked files.  Can the files be easily relinked at once or will all of them have to be relinked separately?

Easy case: only the .book and .fm files are moving:
If both locations are accessible to some user, open all files (per book) at the old location, then save to the new.
If FM11, you might be able to script this.
If it's imported objects that are moving, that really needs scripting to change all the references.
There is an aftermarket "archiving" app that can do that, but it may make them all local.
We infrequently have a need to do just that, make all imported object references local to the document dir, in ./imports/
I wrote a csh/sed script to find all the paths, and hack the MIFs. It's a kludge I can't give out, and still requires manual steps, but it can be done. FM file paths are really ugly in MIF.

  • FrameMaker document link

    hi,
I have created a robohelp project and also a document in FrameMaker. When i tried to link the FrameMaker document through Robohelp, link-> FrameMaker option is disabled, but I can word document link is enabled. I'm using the trail version of Robohelp9 and FrameMaker10. Is it because of compatibilty issue??
    cheers.

I believe that this feature is only available in tthe TechComm Suite version of the products, not in the stand-alone releases.

Did you installed these FrameMaker and RoboHelp build from tech com suite DVD or from Individual product DVDs ?
If these prodcuts are not installed from suite DVD they will not show the suite features even in the trial mode!

  • FrameMaker 11 file link broken when published out to RoboHelp 10

    Hello
I have the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 4 and am trying to test publish a FrameMaker 11 file out through
the FrameMaker publish button to WebHelp (by way of RoboHelp 10).
In the FrameMaker 11, file, I have a link to a PDF that sits down in a subfolder.  I have used the following approach:
    1. Highlighted text in a FrameMaker table.
    2. Chose Special>Hyptertext
    3. From the Hypertext panel, I selected Message Client from the Command drop down menu
and in the syntax field I entered:  message openfile Foldouts/Foldout1.pdf
    4. I then tested the link in FrameMaker by using ALT and CTRL and it works.
    5. Next, I saved the FrameMaker file as a PDF (File>Save As PDF) and tested the PDF.  The PDF links work.
So with all that said, how come I can't select File>Publish>WebHelp and have the link information carry through to the WebHelp HTM output?
I tried this Publish option straight out of the box and it did not work.  I also tried creating a custom RoboHelp template (.XPJ file) and it did not work.
I believe there is a PgfId marker that is generated when the Hyptertext is created in FrameMaker (using the process stated above), but that marker is not getting
translated into an HREF, once it gets published out through RoboHelp 10.
I also tried saving the FrameMaker 11 file directly as an HTML file using the FrameMaker 11 - File>Save As HTML process, but no links carried through
    using that process either.
I do not know if this is a FrameMaker issue or a RoboHelp issue, so I am now posting this in both forums.
If someone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.
Are there certain steps one must do to preserve FrameMaker Hypertext links that get published out through RoboHelp 10 to WebHelp?
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
    Jim

I've deleted the other post as the question is being addressed here. Folks who use Fm only would not be able to help so this is the correct forum as Jeff as explained.

  • Lost link to FrameMaker Book

I have my RoboHelp project with a linked FrameMaker book checked into a Mercurial source control repository. The original machine I was working with (XP) was starting to blue screen regularly, so I was given a new Windows 7 64 bit machine.
Having cloned my repository, I opened up the RoboHelp project to find the FrameMaker book link had disappeared, but with the last Update folders for each chapter present. I linked the FrameMaker book again, and this created a new lot of output folders when generating the output (WebHelp). The help system is not picking up the new files, only the existing ones, and I can't seem to delete the old folders.
Anyone else had a similar issue?
    Mark

    Thank you, Pat.
No, unfortunately, I can't. My old credentials do not work anymore. Some time ago Adobe forums started requiring an email as an only form of a login into the forums. Back then I succesfully 'linked' my old forums ID to the Adobe ID (what is now an only option to get to the forums). But after a breach into Adobe's database and the password reset I've lost a link from my Adobe ID to that old forum ID of mine (witkacy). The only way was to establish a second forum ID (witkacy2). My question is - is there any way to regain the link to my old forum ID to my current Adobe ID.
    Thanks again

  • How can I get RoboHelp to recognize my FrameMaker installation?

I have Technical Suite 3.5 installed and several RoboHelp projects linked to FrameMaker books.
The Frame books were created in FrameMaker 10. I then upgraded to Technical Suite 3.5, then later upgraded my FrameMaker to 11.
All was well, RoboHelp continued to update from the Frame book files.
Then last week my hard disk crashed. IT provided a new disk, installed the Technical Suite and FrameMaker 11, but now when I open the RoboHelp projects and try to update them, RoboHelp displays an error message that says "Adobe FrameMaker 10 is not installed. No FrameMaker documents can be updated."
When I try to relink the project to FrameMaker (File | Link), I get a similar message:  "This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker 10. Install FrameMaker 10 and try again."
How can I get RoboHelp to recognize my FrameMaker 11 installation, which it used to do prior to the crash and reinstallation?
    Thanks.
    Jerry

We also cannot get Robohelp to recognize our FrameMaker installation.
We are using Robohelp 9  and Framemaker 11.
We are in the process of moving all of our Robohelp content to Framemaker, but our project team still needs CHM files for the next release or so.  So we figured we could move our content to Frame 11, then import the Frame content into Robohelp when we needed to generate the CHM files.
The process works great when we use RH 10 and Frame 11, but we get the following error when we use RH 9:
"This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker.  Install FrameMaker and try again."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Frame 11 and RH 9, but am still getting the same error.  Buying a set of new Robohelp 10 licenses probably isn't an option.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Sue

  • Extract pages - doesnt't maintain links

Acrobat 8 professional; from FrameMaker 7.2 structured.
    Acrobat's help states:
Extraction is the process of reusing selected pages of one PDF in a different PDF. Extracted pages contain not only the content but also all form fields, comments, and links associated with the original page content.
However, in two tests from different PDFs (ours and another company's), after extracting pages, the links don't work. Has anyone else experienced this? Are we doing something wrong?
    thanks,
    Teresa

My experience is that extracting pages does maintain the links.
Unfortunately, it does not retain the named destinations, and
FrameMaker's links are unusual in that they rely on named destinations
to work. You therefore have a link, but it goes nowhere unless the
    named destination is recreated.

  • FM9/Win - Changing linked image file?

I can do what I want to do in InDesign, QuarkXpress, and PageMaker, but for some reason this functionality appears to be absent in FrameMaker, which is utterly dain bramaged.
I have a placed image in multiple places in a FrameMaker document. The image is placed by reference, not embedded. I now want to link to a different graphic (annual updates).
Re-placing the image a zillion times is not an option, as the sizing and position is already set. I just want to change what FrameMaker is linking to.
For the life of me, I cannot find where or even if, I can do this.
The inelegant solution would be to simply move or rename the currently-linked-to file on the hard drive, and rename the new graphic to the same name as the old one. I do not like that option at all, as there are some instances in other documents that I still wish to link to the old image file.
Is FrameMaker's link handling really this clumsy and archaic? In the other applications I refer to above, I would either go to a links palette and change the destination or right-click on an image and relink it. In FrameMaker, the "Object Properties" dialog appears to only report the location of the referenced file, not allow you to change it.
    What gives?

    Dan,
To my knowledge, there is nothing in FrameMaker like there is in InDesign that allows you to relink an image directly, or even indirectly via a link list. I also have looked and not found anything. There is a link menu item somewhere but I have never figured out what it does.
There is a plugin by Bruce Foster that is used to archive a book or document and its linked image files and text insets. When you run it, the plugin COPIES the book file and ALL the files associated with it into another folder that you specify, and then readjusts all the links among these files to point to the copied files. It puts all graphics files into one subfolder and all text insets into another. So, once you get your book where you want it, with no future changes, run the archive, and then use the files and book in the archive folder to print or do whatever you need to do in the future.
The downside is that you have two sets of files to manage, but if the archived set is rarely or never edited or updated, then all is well.

  • [error]Upgrading from FRAMEMAKER 6 to 8

    Hi
I have upgrade from FRAMEMAKER 6 to FRAMEMAKER 8 with the upgrade and now all my links are broken.
The error i have is that he can't open a document because he can't find it
In FRAMEMAKER my link are openObjectID Partie11.FM:253461
and when i save the book to a PDF all my link are broken
    Thanks for help

    Jean-Joseph,
In all likelihood, this is just indicative of not having all of the
files converted to v.8 format when working at the book level.
The first time you open a book, you will get prompted about opening an
older version FM. The same goes for any of the book component files.
You should use the option to open all files in a book (by holding down
the shift key and select File > Open All Files), deal with the prompts
and then do a shift+File > Save All Files) to ensure that they have
been saved in the FM8 format.
As long as you haven't moved your files in between upgrades, things
    should work as before.
Also, there are several patches to FM8 that you should install in
    patch order. See:

  • Robohelp crashes when I open properties of FM link

RoboHelp crashes as soon as I rightclick a Framemaker link and select Properties. I have already tried deleting the cpd file but this did not help. Other projects are not affected. I work with TCS3.
Is this a known problem, any solutions/proposals?

It seems like the particular FrameMaker document link has somehow got corrupted in RoboHelp project. Please try re-linking the particular FrameMaker book/document by deleting the link and linking it again to RoboHelp project.
Please note that this will delete any converted RoboHelp content for the particular FM document and it will need to be re-generated.

  • Ilustrations being modified in FrameMaker to Robohelp output

    Hello all,
I noticed a problem in the FrameMaker to Robohelp conversion output. I am using TCS, Framemaker project linked to Robohelp. Outputs are EPUB and Webhelp. My issue exists in both EPUB and Webhelp output.
Some of my source images are in EPS and in AI format, as these formats print nicely in PDF. Some of the illustrations include dashed lines. When I convert the projects, in the Robohelp output, the dashed lines are replaced by solid lines. I contacted support and their response is: Ai, SVG and EPS file format is not supported with Robohelp
This puts a damper on the concept of "single-sourcing" since I'm finding I have to make more and more manual tweaks to my source...
Has anyone run into this? Did you find a solution? I'm not an expert in Illustrations, so kind of stuck here.
I can convert these images to JPG or PNG, but such text based images don't look good in PDF in these formats. (the text is not sharp)
Any ideas? Since I own TCS 4, would I be able to contact support for AI and ask them to help me with finding appropriate AI conversion settings so that my JPG and PNG images (converted from AI and AI EPS) look good in print?
    Thanks.

Couple of things – in the Conversion Settings screen are you having RH use Distiller to process the images? If you aren’t try that & see what the result is like. If you are, turn it off & see what happens. Your other alternative is to generate PDFs of the images and include them by reference in the FM source (conditionalized of course so that they only end up in your RH output) & conditionalize your original images for PDF output only.

  • Tips for troubleshooting crashes?

    TCS 2
    Robohelp 8.0.2
I just created a Robohelp template from a project with a Framemaker booked linked in. I deleted the book from the project before running the script which creates a new template. Robohelp crashes after I created a new project based on the new template and linking the same Framemaker book. Subsequent attempts to open the new project result in a RH crash
I had  problem a few weeks back while deleting the framemaker book from an earlier project i had wanted to use for creating a template.
I would be grateful if there are any checks and steps which can be taken to troubleshoot these RH crashes. Looking through the forum i see mention of the CPD and XPJ files but really not sure what i should do about these and whether it is good practice or not to tamper with these.
I have seen many different RH crashes since working with it a couple of months ago so some structured steps for troubleshooting crashes would be a great help.
Can anyone suggest some self-help steps that can be taken to address crashes?
    TIA
    Rob

The Nvidia driver issue that seemed to be happening with CS 5 10.6.4 seems to be exactly what I am having but I have 10.6.8 and CS 5.5.

Any work arounds? Anybody else having this issue?
Working without open GL sucks, but is better then not working at all.
Is there a different video card on the market that anybody would suggest? I am in the market anyway...I do mainly working in MAYA and AE, I know the graphic cards have come along from two years ago...

  • File structure and Multi-user access/control

    Hi All
Currently evaluating RH. Our plan is to use RH HTML with RoboServer and either SourceSafe or Team Foundation for source control. We will be producing the "printed" manual (PDF) and publishing online help (hopefully html via RH server) from the single source layout
Given that we will edit content in RH's XHTML editor, I'm not clear on when we should create new files or the granularity of multi-user access. We have 17 apps and I plan to use a master project and merging (because we need to link to related topics in other apps).
I'm really not sure what should constitute a file in RH. First off, is access controlled at the file level?
I want to have multiple authors editing the same manual at the same time, so do I need to break the manual into multiple small files (currently it's a single word doc)?
If I do break it into multiple files, what's the best approach: 1 file per topic (or is this a requirement)?
Finally, when I come to generate the PDF, will the files be combined. (i.e. can I have different page-breaks than I have in the RH project)?
    Any pointers greatly appreciated
    Regards
    Mark

    Hi,
First off, is access controlled at the file level?
Not sure what you mean by that. In source control, you can check in/out ever file independent. Sometimes dependent files will be automatically checked out, for instance images used in the css when you check out the style sheet.
I want to have multiple authors editing the same manual at the same time, so do I need to break the manual into multiple small files (currently it's a single word doc)?
That be the idea. Anyway, it's not a good idea to have an entire RoboHelp project in a single topic. You probably want to cut up your contents into the small chunck: topics.
If I do break it into multiple files, what's the best approach: 1 file per topic (or is this a requirement)?
In RoboHelp a topic is a HTML file. RoboHelp doesn't force you to split up content into one or more topics. If you are creating help for the web, you want the information to be organized in relatively small chunck so users can quickly scan through it.
Finally, when I come to generate the PDF, will the files be combined. (i.e. can I have different page-breaks than I have in the RH project)?
Not sure what you mean by page breaks. As RoboHelp creates HTML files, there are no page breaks such as in paper manuals. When you create a PDF, you combine the topics you need into a single document.
If a PDF is required for you, you may want to consider not using RoboHelp for your sources. A PDF created by RoboHelp is useful for internal use, but it never seems to get good enough to give to customers. Personally, when a PDF version of a manual is required, I create the manual in FrameMaker and link or import the book into RoboHelp. You can also link Word documents, so you may want to play around with that before deciding whether to use Word, RoboHelp or FrameMaker for your source.

  • Suppressing variables and cross-reference formats

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can help me with the following two questions:
I am using TCS 3 (FM 10 and RH 9) and have my FrameMaker content linked in Robohelp.l
    1) Is there any way of suppressing a variable from being included in Robohelp (example, the Table Continuation variable), without having to conditionalize each instance of this variable? If conditionalizing is the only way to do this, is there a fast way to conditionalize all instances of the Table Continuation variable? (faster than doing it manually by searching and replacing).
    2) Is there a way to suppress a cross-reference format from being converted to the Robohelp procedure.
    Thanks.
    Sue

    #1 - not sure about
#2 - definitely yes - in the Conversion Settings screen in RH, when you select the FM xref, you see in the field for RH and a little sample of what it will look like - the trick is that you can type over the text to specify what you want to show - I use "<$paratext>" to change one of my "print" xrefs (xxx on page yyy)

  • RH 9 - ? about Importing

I'd like to link a FM 9 document rather than import it. I'm not sure if I'm going about this correctly, but I've tried to create a blank project and then attempted to import the FM 9 book but the Import menu option is not available when I do this, only the Word option is available. How would one go about linking a FM document in RH 9?
    Thanks in advance.

FrameMaker document link option is available in File->Link->FrameMaker Document menu item. However, this option is enabled only if you have installed Technical Communication Suite as mentioned by Jeff.
